Baba Yaga (granny Yaga) is just a scary old witch in a weird house that cooks children in a soup. I'm really sick of Hollywood movies turning her into a combo of Slenderman and Cthulhu. There are much more cool and scary characters in Russian folklore than her.

The reason why they skipped is because they didnt rights for making the stand alone hulk movie. Atleast that is what I heard but that doesn't makes it less sucky with how it was set up in infinity war and it just happenes in end game. Really unsatisfying.

I can’t talk for the other movies cause I haven’t seen them. But the context of that quote is Amy loudly proclaiming (something like) “I, a woman, can play soccer just like the men!” When yeah, that undermines the message, where if she just ya know, played soccer there’d be nothing wrong. In the context of this movie Hope is literally just a woman doing things, she didn’t do anything stupid like “take that men, I can do stuff too!” she’s just. A woman doing things for the plot. (I know you said it’s not bad in this movie but I’m going off of the only example I have, I guess I’ll see how I feel after watching the next few movies)

Guardians 3 doesn't count. James Gunn was always interested in Rocket as a focus and built up his story in unintrusive but effective ways in the first two movies. And even if he didn't, the movies are called "Guardians of the Galaxy". They're all the protagonists.

I think the Knuckles quote comes to mind.
Focusing on the women like this undermines equality and diversity by not only treating them as an exception, but going out of their way to compare them to the make counterparts. I think its not a big deal here since Scott's story is done anyway and he still gets some moments to shine, but it is far more egregious in later movies.

Youre free to disagree, but this, in my opinion, is around the time that marvel starts to over-write their female characters and sort of push aside some of their male characters, I agree, Scott is less experienced than Hope in combat but still experienced enough that he should be having some screen time fighting people in this movie. also sometimes they just flat out make bad movies and a tv show or two because of it.

I wouldn't go so far as to say they used Scott as a stair for Hope, both characters were exactly as was established in the first movie, Hope just has a super suit now. Just because Scott had less action scenes (which I do think they could have done more of) doesn't mean he was "shelved." He had a LOT of screen time and character development, they just weren't as badass moments as Hope. Sure maybe if you only care about action scenes you'd say Scott was pushed aside, but I bet you if you timed each of their screen times Scott would be WAY more. While the movie isn't amazing, I just don't see this as "girl power" pandering. That's just my thoughts on it though

in simpler terms the movie when bad when instead of being a cooprotagonist the wasp and ant man, it uses ant man as a stair for the wasp to be in the spot light... worst thing is that you can tell thats their goal, and instead of doing it right they just do it enought so people can say "look they are inclusive", but in reallity they dont even care, if they did they would make a good female lead WITH a godd male lead as it was expected of this movie

Ok, then I guess I’m confused on what you mean by “focusing your plot on women and minorities just doesn’t make good stories.” Because I don’t agree with that. I guess you meant ONLY women and minorities, but still I think a really good writer could make a good story out of that. Anyway sorry I misunderstood, I thought you were making an argument against my points instead of adding to it

Like, hear me out, but I think Marvel movies with women lead roles aren’t bad BECAUSE the lead is a women, but because Marvel is bad at writing lead women. If they do their job and write women like actual humans, like how they wrote black people like actual humans in Black Panther, we would have a well written and good women lead movie. It’s really weird to suggest the very existence of a female lead makes the movie bad
Mantis
2025-03-19 21:40:58 +0000 UTC
Why do you think movies that lead a woman/minority HAVE to push a narrative? What makes a movie bad if it simply has good women characters in the lead role? Why do you think if a woman is in a lead role it HAS to be written badly? Can you tell me why Black Panther is good despite having a black lead and many women supporting roles?
Mantis
2025-03-19 21:35:47 +0000 UTC
The problem is that focusing your plot on women and minorities and haha funny jokes just doesn’t make good stories. The Marvels, Black Widow, What If, Captain Marvel, and if I had to guess next I’d say IronHeart; all are just not good because they want to push a narrative instead of just telling a good story. Take the “girl power” scene in certain marvel movid for example. That scene was just weird because none of these characters had even interacted before so it didn’t even make sense but marvel said: Oh the women are going to love this one. But they don’t because you can only make a good product when your focused on making the product effective and not just: “This product is good because it’s a product”
Ben Yokes

2025-03-19 21:21:24 +0000 UTC
Black Panther has some of the strongest female AND black characters I’ve ever seen in a movie. Why isn’t that movie “when they started focusing on women and minorities”? Because Infinity War is after? Endgame is after Captain Marvel so that idea doesnt track. Because it’s written well? Well by golly gee, that would mean the WRITING is the problem not that they focus on women and minorities! What a concept!
Mantis
2025-03-19 21:09:32 +0000 UTC
Look I wont doubt that the possible reason that the upcoming movies are not as good is because Marvel doesn’t know how to write lead women well. Or maybe the writing is just lazy, whether they aren’t as interested in the premise or they feel that including minorities will give them enough numbers so they don’t have to work as hard. I don’t know the reason, but it doesn’t matter. “This is when they focus more on women. Which is only bad because the writing is bad.” THEN JUST SAY THIS IS WHEN THE WRITING STARTS TO GET BAD why start with the irrelevant part! I’m honestly so confused about this trend
Mantis
2025-03-19 21:02:23 +0000 UTC
“This is where the trend of focusing on women heroes starts” why does everyone word it like that’s a bad thing? 😭 “There’s nothing wrong with that unless the writings bad” then the bad writing is the problem, not focusing on women. That’s like saying there’s nothing wrong with heist movies unless the writings bad. There’s nothing wrong with overpowered super heroes unless the writings bad. There’s nothing wrong with silly marvel movies unless the writing is bad. Like yes? Why is everyone talking as if the first part is the problem not the obvious second part?

I do get where you are coming from. Where the side character overshadows the main character. In my mind it feels like that is because if the movie was just about the main character again it would get boring. We have seen antman do his thing. The Wasp is the "new" so they get more of a showing. Male or female black or white they all get a chance to show what they can do.

A woman is badass in a movie partly named after her after it was established in the previous movie that she’s been training all her life for this and people dog pile on it starting a negative trend. This reminds me that one of my personal gripes with the first one was that it had the trope “newbie man perfects technique that woman trained all her life for” (I did still love the first movie) If you watch the first movie right before this one it makes total sense why Hope is flying circles around Scott lol. That being said I do agree with Alicia, Antman having a faulty suit the ENTIRE movie was pretty lame
Mantis
2025-03-19 20:06:29 +0000 UTC
Honestly, the fact that Scott is stuck with a malfunctioning suit the whole movie and STILL kicked ass, just showcases his talent as Ant-Man/Giant-Man. No matter what size he is, he always makes it work. And yes, sometimes he needs help from Wasp, like getting Cassie's bag, but that could have easily been solved with a desk or chair. There's nothing 'woke' or 'forced diversity' about this. The only time Scott genuinely needed help was when it came to the electronics of the suit, something he has no idea about. And that's totally fair. That's just how people work.

If your biggest gripe with the movie is you wanted to see more Scott, fair enough, but you can just say that without pointing out that Scott is a white man and Hope is a woman. Hope got the wasp armor at the end of last movie. They wanted to show it off. It’s not some conspiracy to put the white man down and get women to watch the movie or whatever. Just say you didn’t like how they directed it like a normal person, you seem like a nice person I trust you can do that

I might agree with you if there were several badass women characters and several bumbling white men. But you came from the first movie already knowing Hope is badass and Scott is a bit of a funny guy. We love them both for that. I personally think you’ve got your head too far into anti-minority propaganda and I think you can find ways to describe why this movie isn’t the best without pulling the “woman is lead, man is not” crap

You can always tell what type of propaganda someone's gobbling up by how they use the word "woke". Most people rarely even say the word and simply know it as someone having more awareness of modern prejudices. But others refer to "wokeness" as their brainrot way of saying "not enough white men" or "needs hotter women". They can justify it however they like, but it always comes back to those insecurities.

I don't think that has anything to do with gender or minority though. The Wasp is the new aspect of the movie so they were going to show that off no matter what. While I agree with you conceptually as Scott is generally a doofus in his actions, there is (I believe) a difference between what you are describing and what they did in this movie specifically.
I think my best approach to explain what I mean is with "action screen time" per character, the repeated intentional shut down of Ant-Man to make more space for "girl bossing", and I don't personally think it's a far stretch seeing how Disney has treated their other IP's.
But again, I agree with your point, I just don't think we're aiming at the same target.

Additional note: those weird animals that Hank saw when he got stuck halfway to the Quantum Realm whiich look kinda like eight-legged gummy bears with suction-cup mouths are actually a real thing called Tardigrades, AKA "water bears" or "moss pigs." They're a real species of microscopic arthropods that mainly live on mosses & lichens, but they're only really active when exposed to water. Whenever conditions in their environment start to get unfavorable to them (too hot, too cold, too dry, etc), they enter a form of stasis known as "cryptobiosis" (think like cryogenic freezing, except they remove nearly all the water in their own bodies). What makes tardigrades even more remarkable is that they can potentially remain in stasis for hundreds of years and, while in stasis, are nearly indestructible & able to survive all manner of instantly fatal hazardous conditions completely unharmed, including extremely fatal levels of radiation (like the Elephant's Foot at Chernobyl level of bad) or even the freezing cold vacuum of Outer Space! Pretty impressive for an animal smaller than a grain of sand that you can probably find on any old tree or boulder.

Baba Yaga is a real witch from Slavic & Russian folklore, she's basically the horrifying badass grandma of the archetypical fairytale witch who lives in the dark spooky woods & eats children. Instead of a gingerbread house, Baba Yaga lives in a magical hut that's bigger on the inside and walks on giant chicken legs, and her property is surrounded by a fence made of human bones with lanterns made of human skulls. Instead of broomstick, she flies through the air in a giant mortar and pestle (those things used to grind stuff into a paste or powder by hand). Baba Yaga has sharp metal teeth and a hooked iron nose, and like any evil fairytale witch or boogeyman, she likes to eat human flesh (but especially children). However, if you manage to play your cards right & complete any tasks she gives you to her satisfaction, there's a slim chance that Baba Yaga might help you with your problems like she did for Vasilisa the Beautiful (who is basically Russian Cinderella).

I think when people criticise marvel for being too jokey, it kind of added up over time. The movies always had a bit of humour in them, but after the big success of Ragnarok and Guardians of the Galaxy (also Deadpool being a massive hit), they started to copy that level of humour into everything, making it all feel a little bit samey and taking away from a lot of the seriousness. It just gets a bit old after the 10th movie/show, with yet another quirky superhero cracking the same old jokes every 5 seconds.
Also I feel like it's a similar situation to what you were saying about it not feeling like an antman movie. It kind of started to feel like they wanted to phase out the old superheroes for new ones, which I don't think is an issue in its self, but the way they went about it was basically like this, where it felt like they were pushing out the old ones and trying to ride off their success rather than letting the new ones stand by their own merit.
Still a few more decent movies and shows ahead imo, but I'll be curious to see what you think, as to me, after endgame, it started to feel a bit like they were just throwing stuff at the wall to see what stuck, and the shows especially became very hit/miss. I always felt that they should have taken a couple of years out to let people get over the superhero movie burnout after Endgame, but they just kept going with show after movie after show.

Poorly written, poorly directed and sub-par acting makes it one of the worse marvel movies, within what is currently considered the "peak" of the mcu. I don't know why people like to bring in gender, when captain marvel is a beloved and a top 10 marvel character in the comics, she is literally goated in the comics. Captain marvel had the potential of being one of the best marvel movies and they failed in so many aspects it's sad and frustrating as a comic/marvel fan.

It's also important to note that in the comics Antman and Wasp we a duo, they were both the MCs of their comics and to me because Antman got to shine in the first movie it makes sense for Wasp to shine more in this one, it balances it out to me.

You hit the nail on the head with the last theory, this movie was meant to be a breather after Infinity War's heaviness and before the finale, obviously important things happened but it's light-hearted and fun before getting all serious again in the build-up to Endgame.

I do agree that the suit malfunctioning plot-point was overdone, but everything else you listed has nothing to do with Ant-Man and sounds more like you're trying to use future knowledge to justify your stance on this movie in particular. Even if the suit malfunctioning was repetitive, it doesn't change the fact that Hope being the point of emphasis for this movie made sense from a narrative perspective. She wasn't shoe-horned into the story for a cheap pop from a minority in the Marvel audience, this movie was written *for her*.

The 'plot' of scott having issues with the suit the whole movie? The next one being "Captain Marvel" (I think everyone knows the issue with that one), and the infamous "she's not alone" scene. A bit too in the face don't you think? And I don't even think of black widow as weak due to the existence of Hawkeye.

Even in the first movie, Ant-Man wasn't really a fighter. Hope was the fighter trying to teach him. They even imply that Luis is a better fighter than him (he's the only one to have knocked out the guy at the prison, he gets to knock out a guard in the finale). Scott's all about being clever, and really the only person we see him fight successfully in any of the movies so far is Cross/Yellowjacket, who is... a self-important business exec, not exactly a soldier.

Plus the entire first movie was all about Hank holding back Hope because of his fear of losing her like he did his wife. He even states with no sarcasm or malice to Hope that he chose Scott as a way to protect Hope from her going against Cross so they can both claim plausible deniability if Scott messes up. Hank knows Hope can do any task put in front of her, he just does not pull the trigger until after the events of Ant-Man

No, that's just people projecting their future knowledge trying to find where it started.
The truth is that in the original source The Wasp has always been the more combat oriented of the pair while Ant-man has been the scientist who makes all their gadgets and plans (because it was Hank Pym).
Scott succeeded Pym and is more combat oriented than him, but The Wasp was still the combat specialist.

I don't think it was forced in this movie at all. When Scott came back from the Quantum Realm in the first movie, it practically set up the plot for this movie. Hope having increased significance made complete sense. It may not have been what people wanted to see, but that's a different discussion entirely.
Richard Sinclair
2025-03-18 16:16:17 +0000 UTC
I'm sitting here at 2:03:00 with Alicia going "I thought this movie would have been f&%ed up, but I guess the snap doesn't even happen in this movie".
And then there's me looking at the screen thinking "Oh boy..."
On a side note, Hope being the main combatant is actually pretty faithful to the source material. The few things I watched/read The Wasp was in she was the one doing most of the fighting. Ant-man would take more of a scientist role, figuring out plans and making gadgets (because it was Hank Pym). Scott's Ant-man is not a scientist, but he's more of a master thief than a combatant.
So yeah, in this movie, it's absolutely valid and faithful to the source that The Wasp does the most and the best when it comes to fighting.
Sadly, it's not always that fair in the MCU. We have some infamous ones in the horizon. But we are not there yet :D

I really like this movie and think it's better than the first one, honestly. I know it feels like Ant-Man is a side character, but this isn't really *his* movie. It's the Wasp's movie. I've seen some comments saying this movie is a casualty of Marvel leaning into the "strong female character" trope, but I don't buy it. Hope having increased significance in this film felt entirely organic.
The impossibility of the Quantum Realm was a major plot-point from the first movie, and when Scott went in and came back, it opened up the possibility that Janet was still alive. Of course the next step would be for Hank and Hope to save her.

Marvel tends to side-line male characters starting/escalating around this era of Marvel, but I think it's fine that Ant-man specifically doesn't fight much. Scott Lang is a cat burglar. Comics characterize everyone a bit different, but I think this version of Scott just fits as someone who'd rather avoid the fight, while Hope has been training to fight most of her life so it makes sense that she'd focus on fighting.
EDIT: I guess I should have quoted Scott.
"I hate violence, I burgled them. I’m a cat burglar."
Just because he can fight, doesn't mean he wants to. Him taking non-violent actions over violent ones makes the most sense.

The story was terrible. The character development was terrible And the acting, oh my God, the acting was so bad. Bree Larson Should never have been cast in that movie. She was so stiff as a character and the interviews that she did for the movie were just unwatchable. She made everyone else around her feel uncomfortable.

To be fair to Jasmin here, even Alicia noticed the shift. Its definitely worse in later entries.
The main issue is the one Knuckles pointed out. "Whenever someone calls attention to the breaking of gender-roles, it ultimately undermines the concept of gender equality by implying that this is an exception and not the status quo." The girl-power moments kinda highlight the lack thereof in the rest of the MCU and some of the films end up tripping over themselves trying to fix the issue in hindsight instead of making good movies/shows with great women.

Yeah this is where the Marvel movie quality started to dip in a few projects. This is also the time where they started to focus super heavily on identity politics in their movies in a meta way. Essentially how Disney/Marvel views all of the movies that came before this is that they view them as sexist and misogynistic because they were very heavily male focused. So from here on they try to uplift the women of the MCU a lot more. Wouldn't be an issue but, like you pointed out, they have problems with knocking down the men or making them less prominent in order to prop up the women and make them more important or make them look cooler than the men that came before them.

Don't blink enough? Okay, remind me to never challenge you to a staring contest. I already suck at those so you'd just embarrass me. :p
This and the next movie are mostly 'flashback' movies. Events that happened before Infinity War. IIRC it's the end credit scenes for both that are following the Snap.
I'm a pretty heavy social introvert, I already know I can run three months with next to no in-person contact and only start to get antsy toward the end of three months. Others I know... not so much they said. :p That said, those three months are going to be nearly totally in front of the computer or in bed so... 'healthy' is debatable.
Yes he is stuck in the quantum realm until the next bit. Though... yeah. Stuck.
The problem that has been growing in Ant-Man's movies have been seeming that they don't really include Ant-Man.

Agree. Do I think Ant Man and Ant Man and the Wasp are the best Marvel movies? No, but damn it they are probably two of the Marvel movies I have rewatched the most due to the perfect mix of action, comedy and most importantly the cast (which is why I am not a big fan of the third due to certain cast members not being in the movie)

21:09 As Scott loved to remind everyone in the first movie, he didn't rob them, because robbery involves threat. He burgled them. He was very hung up on this fact that he's a burglar not a robber.

Dont remind me of such filth, for my own mental state, after endgame any movie besides GOTG 3 and the two spiderman movies. Is and will be blocked out of my brain, that way they can't hurt me any more.

I've seennthe third ant-man, so I know my personal (luis) goat makes his last appearance here, the character luis, shares my name but also his actor Micheal pena, is a great actor. He was one of the main characters in one of my favorite shows (narcos mexico). So him having my name made me fan girl, I pray for the day Alicia watches the narcos series, sadly I know it will never happen but a man can dream.

Pre-watch comment: never seen this movie, multiple friends and family told me this movie wasn't that good, I know it leads up for endgame. Truthfully I seen endgame without this movie and it made sense, still happy to see Alicia watching all the movies. That also mean that objectively the worst marvel movie (in the mcu) is next "captain marvel". I will take forth that venture watching Alicia as well.

As an average Marvel fan, I love this film. Clearly a Marvel film in so many ways, but the smaller and more personal scope make it such a welcome difference after all the "major consequences" movies.

Not to brag Alicia, but going into your blinking rant at the start of the video, I've never had a problem staring. I've been able to stare at screen for minutes on end (with a fan blowing) without any issue. How do I know this? My middle school science class held a little staring contest in relation to eyes one day. I won second place and that was only because I intentionally blinked. The total time was about 8 to 9 minutes and meanwhile the other contestant had his eyes feel like they were burning, I didn't feel a damn thing other than boredom so I blinked just to get it over with. For extra context, apparently the record my science teacher has had in the past doing this contest was somewhere between 10 to 15 minutes, where he actually had end the contest personally to move on with teaching.

Not even 5 minutes in and I hard relate. Like, when I'm REALLY into a game (MH:Wilds, looking at you) I just get so involved that I even forget to eat. Luckily when I find the random time to relax and just go "I wonder if there's any videos on YouTube I can watch" and then BAM! I just realize I have to eat.

Or it could also be that people rightly have high standards for big budget films and marvels writing tanked after infinity war. Does not mean you can't enjoy a movie, even if it's sub-par or terrible. I just think too many folks watch a film when it comes out, have a good time without thinking about it too hard, then get personally offended when said film is scrutinized thoroughly and believing it makes them a bad person for having enjoyed it.

Completely agree. I think a lot of Marvel movies in the vicinity of Infinity War got judged by the extremely high bar that movie set, PLUS dealing with the start of people getting very tired of just how many Marvel films there were starting to be.
Is it one of the best Marvel films? Not by a long shot. Is it still a really fun watch with some good humor and special effects? Definitely.

Before I rewatch and change my opinion on this (which has happened for a lot) I’ll say that I’ve always thought the internet was a little too hard on this movie. It’s definitely not the best film, nor the best marvel movie, but it’s pretty fun. All the ant shenanigans that happen is fun, and Hope as wasp is pretty cool. Also the fbi guy is entertaining
