Captain Marvel

Comments

Years later and you people still wrong about this.

Ryan Whorton

I'm going to say it here and now. I really like the reveal of how Fury lost his eye. It fits his double life character. Because on paper it can sound so badass. "I lost my eye to a dangerous space alien capable of killing a small army." which is true. But also the ittle kitty had a big angy is equally accurate.

YukoValis

the movie by itself i feel fills the roles of a marvel character movie is supposed to fill, backstory, action, comedy and growth into the hero role. But the movie was the 1st where disney shifted their writing to empower females more, and made male, especially white actors feel weak and demasculined. From here on out, female heroes will instead of being like Black Widow.. smart, charismatic, cunning.. will just be a more flat personality and all about brute strength. She-Hulk being the worst offender. Fury instead of the usual BAMF he is.. became a useless sidekick that just followed Carol around. Among the Kree.. the girls got more good scenes then the guys.. her leader Yon, especially was just slapped around and ridiculed the entire movie.

Zolfried

I can post my comment now that she has finished Endgame. I watched this movie a month after its release and thought the same. It's an okay movie. I did have issues with Carol Danvers patrolling the galaxy and not engaging Thanos at all. It's like entire worlds and realms are being destroyed and slaughtered for the name of balance, but he wasn't high enough on the threat list to take priority over finding a new world for the Skrulls. But my main issue with the character comes later, Endgame Carol feels entirely different than this Carol, and that must have been a writing thing. Yes, I understand her isolation and not having those relations with the other characters, but the banter she has with Fury isn't there with everyone else.

Optimystical

Movie wasn't bad, but it looked like the starting flag of replacing characters for less developed or liked ones that appeared to fit a diversity list more than caring about the characters and stories. And Disney started doing a lot of loved characters dirty in the eyes of some fans. Those things together amplified the hate I think. Captain Marvel became a political talking target. For me, I knew enough of pieces of the stories they used and heavily changed, that I sat through this movie confused and frustrated from the glaring changes, which did NOT mix well with the movie's weaker points and gave me a LOT of concern about adding such a overwhelmingly powerful character in right after it seemed like they neutered our boy Hulk... She doesn't have the limits she had in the comics.

holycobra

Yeah, after all these years... I feel like this movie is average to me. Like a 4.5. I don't dislike Carol, just I felt during this time. I wanted a Black Widow movie before all this. Like her past and what we could squeeze in. I love Captain Marvel in the Mightiest Avengers cartoon more, but that just me.

Crawlingchaos03

No wonder Fury needed that guidance camera we saw in Winter Soldier, he’s a really shitty driver, also why is no one talking about how the cat is the thing that made him so distrusting? Remember? “ Last time I trusted someone, I lost an eye” 😂

Ben Gross

Never seen this movie before, I'd say it pretty good, I just wasn't a fan of Carol Danvers at the time. Because she was fresh off her Civil War 2 arc and went full Minority Report fascist.

No Named

wait your right oh no!!

Drago the dragon pokemon

Really your going to blame misogyny while a little bit of it is probably misogyny. most of the hate for her isn't because of misogyny It's because she's an asshole and rude and disrespectful and she makes everyone around her uncomfortable. The actors that were around her were uncomfortable because of how she acts. Everyone around her is constantly crawling on eggshells So she doesn't get triggered or her feelings hurt By saying something that shouldn't hurt her feelings. And you could tell that if you watched any of the interviews she did with the other actors that were in this movie. Or even in the interviews for the Avengers Endgame movie. If it was misogyny people would have hated on the black widow movie just as much as they hated on this one but they didn't the reason some people didn't like the black widow movie was because the cgi was bad but no one hated the movie because of Scarlett Johansson or the fact she is a woman because unlike captain Marvel, black widow had good acting and a good story and scarlett Johansson isn't a unbearable person like brie larson.

Iron_claw

Wait she skipped Vemon NOOOOOOOOP

Yvnngpd

Almost like every being in the universe doesn’t centralize their lives around earth

Triene (Katie)

I really enjoy this movie

Triene (Katie)

Nothing forced about it. What makes you feel that way? And the interview “controversy” is ridiculous made up stuff by, again, toxic misogynist marvel “fans”.

Triene (Katie)

The reason is misogyny. She’s “most hated” among the toxic fanbase.

Triene (Katie)

Well here’s one I haven’t seen. All I know about this film is that Larson is one of the most hated actresses in the mcu and she had an ass double

Nightmareman99

I still do not comprehend why people claim this is a shit movie. There are Marvel movies that are WAAAY worse than this one. It's a ton of fun! Cool action, great style, Carol Danvers is a likable and cool protagonist (and not an obnoxious girlboss, thank god) who plays well off Nick Fury. Maybe it was because it was so close to Infinity War? I dunno man, this is far from the bottom of the barrel for Marvel.

Aqua Lantern

Remember when Stan Lee past away she posted herself in Instagram like sitting in a cafe smiling with title RIP Stan lee

Pokora Mora

stupid end to a fine movie.

William Bridges

It was better than ant man and I liked ant man.

William Bridges

Initially the eye thing was the only complaint people had about the movie as far as I remember, The hate came later due to politics and future terrible movies.

William Bridges

I agree, however the connectedness of the movies takes a sharp downturn after end game. If you take all moves up to endgame as one long tv show they are really good and they start being hated after endgame, but if you start looking as the movies as their own individual things that just so happen to have a loose connection leftover from before then the movies that get a lot of hate are suddenly really good. I for one think multiverse of madness was great.

William Bridges

I don't think having a series of movies that mostly only work with each other is a bad thing. Its unorthodox but that's how most shows work too. Its basically 1 long show with massive episodes. If you go in expecting that then Marvel movies are alot better. I think some of the hate comes from people who want to tell artists how to art. You wouldn't jump into the middle of breaking bad and say the episodes sucks cause you don't understand what's going on.

Rinnzu Rosendale

Hey, just wanted to let you know when you watch Endgame next, don't skip through the credits right when the movie ends. Watch it through the cast roll call, there's something really nice there that you'll like

Waa

If you go on Facebook, which I don’t recommend and look up any Marvel movie after 2016 you’ll start seeing tons of really weird comments about how marvel’s become too woke and any movie or TV series that has female Marvel characters they get shit on by incels. Like when the she Hulk series came out I personally enjoyed that series. I thought it was great, but if you go online, everybody was dog piling on it and they were complaining about every little thing even good things were being complained about it didn’t make any sense but the only ones complaining were maga supporters. and then Miss Marvel came out and again it’s a great show really fun, great acting but since all of the characters are Middle Eastern, everybody from the Maga crew started attacking the show saying that it’s gone woke insane, and complaining that all the characters that were female were Mary Sues. and then when the marvels came out, it was the exact same thing. The movie theater was deserted even though the movie itself was really good and a lot of fun to watch everybody in the theater that I saw it in which was only about a third full, walked out, saying wow that was a great movie. I wonder why nobody’s in the theaters. And that was the opening weekend that I saw it in you’re going to start noticing Disney and Marvel putting out more movies that are white male centric in the future because of the fact that they are scared that nobody will watch their movies if they put females or people from other ethnicities in the lead roles.

Daisy Azuras

So I take it you don’t pay attention to what’s going on in the world or spend any time on social media

Daisy Azuras

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. She plays Envy Adams. And you hate her in it. She fits the role well.

Mystchevious

i think a lot of hate comes form how brie larsson (carols actor) acted in inteweives and such plus how forced it feels that she is the "strongest"

Gustaf Hillertz

Okay but also Mar-Vell wasn't Evil?? She was literally trying to safeguard a group of refugees against an oppressive expansionist force. I get the gripes about changing her backstory, but it's not exactly the biggest change the MCU's made, and it's not like the MCU is trying to be 1:1 with the comics. Plus, it's more than likely that Mar-Vell was already dead by the time the engine detonated, given the gaping hole in her chest.

Amorphous rodent

also that final end credit scene that confused you, it was back in the past right after Fury wrote that report on his computer. It explains how Fury got the Tesseract all that time ago.

DeathHawk31

I had no idea people didn't like this, I really enjoyed it. I feel Fury's eye reveal was kinda weak and his reaction to it was not at all believable, but I loved everything else.

DeathHawk31

I don't think it was either? That's not what I was getting at. I think "woke" has been damaged to the point what it means is totally lost. What I was saying is the the studio is insincere, and decided to revel in free publicity in a way that felt kind of icky in execution. at least that's how I remember it, but memory is fallible.

Michael Eldon

if i recall it was some bad interviews or interactions with the lead, worry about adding in a "superman" character into joined franchise, and lastly on reception the over softening of fury's character wasnt well received. but for me the movie was just kinda meh and as the 1st one after the passing of stan that made it feel more flat than it probably was.

noneyabiss

There were a few reasons for the big hate for it. Timing, while in a time we were in the midst of some of the biggest "put strong independent women in everything", so it got overfocused on by those who felt like it was just pandering. Like the whole thing with her getting back up as a girl up to her adult self, it was held for a little too long, and the dialogue a little too cheesy. But there's really nothing wrong with cheesy. People had just started to get kinda... tired of the Marvel "everything needs a quip, everything needs to be drama" thing. Add on small related controversies with the actor, as well as her performance being seen as a bit... stiff (which I think is mostly cause people see how she is at the start, when she's ALL kree soldier and nothing else, and then that colors how they see her the rest of the movie). Also, people kinda... didn't like the idea she was just rolling around somewhere while Thanos has just been freely taking shit all over the galaxy. Cause... the way they scaled the different heroes for the cinematic universe, she's basically the only one they put on a level to actually stand up 1v1 to him. Even Thor hit him with what was basically a sucker punch with a tailor made weapon while Thanos was still reveling at having gotten all the stones(yes he reacted and shot a blast back, but he clearly didn't have time to focus on doing it properly, otherwise... no way that axe would have gone through). But yes, as a movie on its own, I'd say this one is just fine. It's got some decent action, and the banter is fun. I particularly enjoy how the Skrull are just... regular dudes. Talking all chill like xD

Shatol Darmelo

Definitely one of the lower movies for me, people tend to write off complaints as people being "bigots" or "anti-woke" cause of the stuff going down at the time of release, and yea there were definitely some people that disliked it for that reason, but there are some valid complaints about the movie. The actress got a lot of hate and part of it I get, part of it I think should be blamed on the writing, and part of it I think is exagerations made by the "anti-woke" crowd. I don't really care for her one way or the other, interviews and what I've seen of her outside of acting havent left the best impression, but I don't think her acting in this movie was any more her fault than it was the writing. In the end it just doesn't sit well with me when I see people review the movie (or actress) as "purely awful" or "purely good" solely based on whether they think its "woke" or not, it has its ups and downs like evrything else, so I can really appreciate your take on the movie. Mainly poor writing is to blame in my opinion, it leads to poor character development and doesn't endear me to captain marvel at all, genuinely no feelings toward her one way or the other, and i honestly don't know if thats better than disliking a character, at least then I come away from the movie with something. It was fun to watch once but I never cared to watch it again till now, and probably won't watch it again till another creator can get me to sit through it.

Archie Curlz

Wait lumping the first captain america with this and thor 2 is actually crazy to me, genuinely curious what makes you not enjoy it?

Archie Curlz

Meh I see that as just a moment since almost every hero has one where nobody likes them

Kyriakos dn2

Never noticed Maria's call sign, Photon, was on her plane before. Honestly the Fury/Danvers chemistry is one of the best in MCU

Porpoise Power

This movie is 2008 hulk bad But at least It's better than the eternals.

Iron_claw

I don't think this movie was woke. I think it was just a bad movie. Bad writing, bad, acting bad character development. The only good thing about it was the cgi

Iron_claw

She was legit my favorite character in that show.

Kaylon Lencrerot

@Hugh. No, Daisy has a bit of a point. I've seen people make cut down whitewash versions of endgame by trump fans. Cutting out various and any women fighting. I doubt this was the main reason people didn't like this movie, but it certainly was a factor. heck if you search the comments here and on antman you will see a lot of people saying "they made women OP so movie bad"

YukoValis

lotta people pissed that the movie is mid... same way ppl get pissed when others don't care for MARVEL SLOP in general (I like some) or the types to complain about everyone making jokes or having one liners are if they are not all from comic books.

Easy Mode - A.I

lmao excellent satire, you sound exactly like a complete nutcase. well done.

Hugh Mungus

Not really 'Mar Vell' was right next to her like the guy okay I can see why the bomb might have not done anything him but the lady for sure something happened, plus if this was true bombs wouldnt be as scary irl. Also never got into Duneee.

Az256

Fury genuinely trusted Goose... 😢😺

Rhodair

The main reason why people hate this movie is because of Donald Trump. This movie was deemed by Maga as a woke movie promoting women, and they really don’t like that so unfortunately, all the female heroes and the Marvel universe are constantly trashed by males from that movement, the whole anti-woke movement. Me personally I thought this was a fine movie. It wasn’t spectacular, but it wasn’t bad either it was good, but because of the era that we live in people are going to loudly complain about any type of inclusive movie.

Daisy Azuras

The "engine exploded on her only cuz everyone else that was there doesn't count" makes sense because she's the one who shot at the core. It's similar to how (in the Dune universe) lasguns hitting energy shields result in an atomic level explosion on both the target AND the one who fired.

Rhodair

it's not the best marvel film, and probably not the worst at this point. Alt-right assholes are going to complain about everything "being woke," but the studio, marketing, and lead actress really seemed to revel in the whole thing. I think someone realized they could be exploited for free publicity, and decided to market the film in a way that was as obnoxious to that demographic as humanly possible. Not really sure if I can say exploiting the hate is smart or shortsighted... but the whole thing became a shit-show. By the time I was in theaters I was too exhausted by the fighting and baggage to sit down and enjoy this for what it was in the moment. After watching it again here way later out of context, it's okay. kind a cheesy at times, and has some fun and some dumb moments. It's a shame cause I really like captain marvel, especially how she was portrayed in "Earths mightiest heros" Solid as all hell cartoon!!! worth looking at.

Michael Eldon

Couple cool things about this film are: 1) like the comment says below mine, nick said before "last time I trusted someone I lost an eye" and this shows that, v epic. 2) not really cool but the hate around this movie was largely either fans hating the actor for carol (Bri Larson I think?) or general public not liking that lots of the film "seemed preachy" since it was "about feminism" which while the film has feminist messaging at points, the more I watch, the stupider that feels to me as an argument. It's just portraying accurately to the time and lots of similar things still happen. 3) Carol is the only person other than Wanda that we know of to have the power of an infinity stone unaided by any form of gadget (I'm discounting vision since he's a robot technically) which suggests that Wanda was created in order to replicate carol in some way for hydra. 4) I *believe* that carol is the only person that has gone up against Ronin the accuser and won until guardians of the galaxy happens. Let me know in the replies if I missed or got anything wrong!

Thomas Wilkins

aah, not Alicia with the pocket sand 🤣

Rhodair

Honestly that bugs me less for some reason. It could be an exotic alloy or something. But yeah it doesn’t make sense either. I’m just being pedantic. It just bugs me when they announce “it’s not on the periodic table!” Just say unknown element or something. Why say it like that? I know they why they do, it just bugs me. That’s why I called it a pet peeve.

bismuthalienated

Yeah considering the existence of vibranium another material not previously on the marvel periodic table

Josef Hammond

The movie just wasn't the great especially with the twist that her husband who is a hero in the comics ends up being a evil old lady. Definitely a what the hell were they snorting for this moment. She has no character story at all and usually every hero movie starts with a mirror villain or at least someone who poses a significant threat to them. This was just an engine exploded on me only me cuz everyone else that was there doesn't count so I got powers and everyone I fight is basically human there's not big fight or anything to make the ending relatively interesting not to mention this movie drops out of no where after infinity war to set up one of the many characters that could have helped in universe ending moments but just didn't show up cuz just cuz

Az256

The hate for this movie was way overblown. It may not be a *great* movie but it’s fun. People say Brie Larson was flat, but I disagree. Now for a little bit of trivia. In comics, Mar-Vell was a guy, and was the original captain marvel. When the trailers for this movie released, people theorized that Jude law’s character was mar-vell. DC’s Shazam used to also be called captain marvel, until trademark disputes with marvel comics led them to change the name in 1972

Andrew birds

I was really good in since and the main thing I remember about the table is that it is a list of all the elements we know not all the elements that exists. This means we can still discover more or create more that are not on the table. Some of the last elements on the table are human made creations from a nuclear reaction.

Gotamoona

I never got the chance to see this movie. I remember a lot of people not liking it which might have been the main reason I have not watched it yet. I did see the second one with out power trio of girls and I don't care what people say I love the Flerkens and would love if they where real.

Gotamoona

Nobody likes Mrs. Carol "I'm gonna jail Miles Morales for a crime he may or may not commit in the future." Danvers.

N00B

Part of the culture war was self-inflicted. Both actual marketing as well as Brie Larson's own input just fed the trolls and fanned the flames. The movie was asking to be controversial.

N00B

Its more of a writing issue. Carol has no character arc. She starts the movie the same as she ends it and the only thing she learned is: "I'm aweome, everyone else is wrong and stupid."

N00B

"Last time I trusted someone, I lost an eye."

KealisHîr

someone needs to tell Alicia what happens to Coulson in agents of S.H.I.E.L.D

Ignis Flame

I actually really like Carol Danvers. I think a lot of people blamed Brie Larson for coming across as a bit flat, but it's kind of unfair because for the first half of the movie she's playing someone with no memories who has been essentially brainwashed. I think Brie Larson understood the assignment perfectly. In the last part of the movie and in her future appearances, Carol has a lot more personality and is a much more fun character.

Malkalypse

Honestly never saw this movie because of all the hate for brie larson going around at the time but its definitely not as bad as people were saying it was. I actually found it pretty fun now that Ive watched it like this

stijn Arts

It completely was, the arguments mainly was about how absurd a woman being more powerful than other characters were and somehow she was shoe horned in. Same voices completely ignores Scarlet witch existence in same vein. People didn´t have a problem with Brie in her other movies. I liked her in Scott pilgrim as well. As said the anti-feminist movement toward marvel was so cringe

Alex Larsen

I feel like a different atomic structure would be chaotic if it came into our world. Imagine if animal cells in one universe react violently with oxygen. It just creates so many issues mixing different theoretical systems. We cannot make something outside the periodic table unless it has tons of electrons which make it unstable.

bismuthalienated

new elements have been discovered over the years, meaning our understanding of atoms is increasing, so meaning that if isnt in the periodic table is just means we dont know yet about it, and the movie is in the 90s, and since then they moved up from element 110 to 117, so...

Faroth

Nick Fury on the 1st avengers movie: "i have only trust someone in my life and it cost me an eye" Nick fury in capt marvel: "is just a cat, i can trust this cat with my life, i would gave an eye for this cat, its adorableAAAAGHHHH"

Faroth

Even if they are from an alternate universe. If they can exist here and breath air, they are made of of cells like ours. A different atomic structure just couldn’t exist within ours.

bismuthalienated

Ignoring the fact that comparing the periodic table of our universe and the one in Marvel is flawed, I think the comment was made with how the periodic table currently exists, not including hypothetical elements that don't exist but could. In that sense, the comment is correct. Also, Tony Stark literally made a new element in Iron Man 2 that wasn't on the periodic table. Also also, the future-proofness of the periodic table only holds in the universe where it was created. Comparing our periodic table to the one that exists in the Marvel universe is not possible, as there ways that matter behaves in the Marvel universe that aren't observable here.

Richard Sinclair

The only way that ever makes sense if it's from some alternate reality, which the Skrulls are not. Otherwise, I'm pretty sure any elements after the known periodic table would be hella radioactive and unstable?

Malkalypse

Did I say it was great? Christ, dude. Also, I'm not chalking up anything - I lived through that era of miserable, butthurt men defining themselves solely on hating a woman-centric piece of media. Don't try and make like it didn't happen.

Bologna Amputation

You say that like this movie didn't have months of hate videos made about it starting before the first trailer even released. Every announcement, teaser, trailer, media tour, etc was met with professional haters making bank on youtube. I'm not saying it was a great movie, but the bias the internet put on the fandom took a 5 and made it look like a 0. That "culture war" shtick has since infected most media, politics, even the vtuber community. This reaction proved to me that a regular person without all that noise going in sees this movie for what it is, a somewhat fun mid tier marvel movie.

Fei Ashtear

"Its not on the periodic table" is such a pet peeve for me. The periodic table is everything that is able to be made with atoms. Protons, Neutrons, and Electrons. You cannot have a new element without it fitting into the table. You go from 1 electron which is Hydrogen, then it increases by 1 each element until you get to Oganesson with 118 electrons. In theory there is an element with 119 electrons or higher, but we cannot confirm it so its blank for now. Everything that can exist uses either one or multiple of these elements.

bismuthalienated

This Movie and the Actress still get hate to this day. All Brie Larson did was criticize old men determining what gets an Oscar.

Silver Raven

I really like your reactions. You're so positive that even movies I don't particularly enjoy, the 1st Captain America, Thor 2, this, etc., become more fun. Your positivity is infectious.

chase keener

Oh yeah right my bad thank you ,theres. Another hero I cant remember that have similar problems I can’t remember who it was

Andhy thomas

HBH alistor: smile sweetheart your never fully dressed without one.

TSP247

I personally don't like this movie so imma skip the reaction to it. It's mostly a personal thing as I never really liked Captain Marvel's character even from the comics, especially during the CW2 run.

Most Sane Oreimo Fan

you got it the other way around. Captain Marvel is originally DC's, not Marvel's, he's called Captain Marvel before eventually becoming Shazam. He's originally from a former rival of DC before DC takes ownership of the Captain Marvel character. Then, when Marvel was made, it became an issue so DC had to turn over the rights for the Captain Marvel name and switched to Shazam and Captain Marvel got the rights for the name now.

Most Sane Oreimo Fan

its not because its a woman its because shes a mary sue. we love a good a woman hero lookat buffy or ripply.

Revy two.hands

I wonder why they changed it. I remember seeing it in theater, did they cut it for the home release or am I misremembering?

Talenozam

To my eyes, this movie received a lot of hate for one main reason. The star. This movie was when the Marvel "fans" who insist that Comics are a "GUY'S THING" came whining about a powerful woman in the MCU. These same fans are part of the same vein that called Aloy from Horizon ugly, then photoshopped her to "fix" her. A vast majority of the hate came from whiny man-babies. I agree with Alicia's review at the end - not the greatest movie in Marvel, sure, and there are a few continuity issues / retcons of sorts, but it's a fun enough watch. Pop some corn, have a drink, and just enjoy.

David Blizzard

i think because before this movie we had absolute bangers, Ragnarok, infinity war, black panther, it got over shadowed and having an origin story between infinity war and endgame felt like they added a her character to quickly for convenience just my own personal thoughts, id love to hear what people think

Vincent

the only thing that annoyed me was the fact Thor was the confirmation of Alien life to the humans, but in this they rewrite that which is strange because its because of the Destroyer in Thor they decided to make weapons despite that alien fleet in this movie being the bigger threat other than that i found this to be a fun movie

Vincent

Its almost time for endgame the 10+ years of mcu

DankusMemes

That should honestly say quit a lot. A movie like Battle angel Alita being more highly praised than this one, despite it being even more "woke" means it just did it better and the problem wasn't "strong woman bad".

Timothy Tänzer

this Captain marvel is the original Shazam till something happened with dc that why her colour matches his and similar kind of powers and sentry is kind of superman in a way btw she's very very op in comics but like always mcu nerf the fuck out of their heros

Andhy thomas

Look, fury lost his eye to a very dangerous alien! Just because Goose is super cute doesn't mean he can't probably solo most of the avengers. He's a cutie but he means business when he needs too

evoL

I honestly really enjoy this movie. Carol and Fury's sasiness is exactly my brand and feels almost like a budy-cop, and I love a good op protagonist in all my media. Aside from a few continuity errors regarding the nineties; I wholeheartedly endorse this one. Cannot wait for Endgame Alicia.

MacGuffin

Perhaps you should do Deadpool 1 and 2 before endgame? Could be fun!

scatman's world

No, no I went to the theaters and watched this movie a day before release at the midnight showing Like I do for all Marvel movies. Because I'm a huge Marvel fan. and I Was highly disappointed. This was the first Marvel movie that I almost walked out on this movie was bad. This isn't some YouTube creator culture war. This movie is just bad. The acting was bad. The story was bad. The character development was terrible.

Iron_claw

This was a Shit movie The story was not good. The acting was bad and the character development. That was just terrible. This movie all around was just bad other than the cgi which was good

Iron_claw

ok guys were in the endgame now, lets play will alicia suprise us with another avengers upload this week 1 for yes 2 for no and 3 for i hate marvel

taco-man

Captain Marvel has had MULTIPLE reboots because the fanbase all hates her.

Mystchevious

There's one big continuity issue with this movie. The scene with the train takes place in Los Angeles. But the Meto didn't exist in the 90's. It didn't get built until later so there's no way they could've been on a train.

SakakiMaya

Without giving any spoilers: the real issue with post Endgame MCU is Disney+. They started making shows that tie in major plot elements. Hardcore fans go into each movie with several shows watched as "homework" and casual fans are left with short recaps mid movie. You end up with hardcore fans disappointed that not enough of the shows are paid off in the movies, and casual fans feeling lost, like they missed multiple movies. I think every Disney+ show is worth watching on its own, and each movie is at least fine. I am glad you're going in looking to give your own take, instead of just confirming the bias the internet tries to impose on you.

Fei Ashtear

I really wanted to enjoy this but it's still meh to me it's worth a watch but her acting was a real let down

Cameron Meow

This was never a bad movie. This is the beginning of youtube culture war content creators using mcu movies and shows to get views. For the rest of the MCU these youtubers play up the flaws in writing, acting, etc. They also use any opportunity to weave an anti-white male conspiracy theory around minor jokes or plot points. To be fair, they made a ton of money doing this with every new show and movie. Unfortunately, it's bred an incredibly obnoxious commenter culture that infects any discussion about the MCU moving forward.

Fei Ashtear

EXACTLY! :D

N00B

David Bodor & DeVaunBeats Who are you upset with? I didn't think I was bring up "Woke." I was talking about how Brie Larson upset the fanbase like Rachel Zegler did as well...thus hurting people's mindset towards their movies.

Tyler Owens

The most unrealistic thing is probably that Carol's callsign is "Avenger". Pilot's do not get to pick their own callsign, and the only reliable way to get a flattering callsign is to be given it ironically, usually by doing something stupid. The characters in Top Gun had callsigns like "Maverick", "Iceman", and "Merlin". The actual pilots that served as technical advisors were "Curly", "Secks", "Sobs", "Rat", "Heater", and "Organ."

SweetCandle

Curious to see how she enjoys/dislikes this one! Very divided movie from what I remember but I didn’t mind it.

scatman's world

Makes sense to me, they were the two heads of the gov backed heroes for the Civil War 2 comics that were running then

FunkyOnion

I never really hated this movie, but I really wanted Nova since he has similar powers and the Nova corps was destroyed by Thanos in Infinity war which was his origin story

Mihran Ahmad

It is just not a great film tho lmao. It feels worse than it is because the rest of the marvel movies around it were really good. Also tryna chalk up all the criticism this film gets to 'men whining' is very telling lol

Ougi

oh the anchint comic book war of captian marvel , captian marvel , and shazam

Lance Ivy

I think why people don't like it is because when it came out it was after X Men dark phenox came out and the two movies were extremely identical but without having the context of the other movie this one is good

Donald Weese

Just so we are in the clear. Captain Marvel is a good character. MCU captain Marvel is trash

Kyriakos dn2

Worse than what was said and done to her? Come on now.

Robert Collard

This movie is about average. The worst things it does is downplay the seriousness Fury displayed in Winter Solgier when he said the last time he trusted someone he lost his eye, and i feel having captain marvel appear right before the endgame

Gildarts1#fan

It’s certainly not the worst thing ever. But if you have been following all these movies for years, this one leaves a bad aftertaste with quite a few of its lore additions. As well as messaging In my personal opinion, comparing to the other heroes of this series, carol feels like a Mary sue… or more of the Chinese web novel male equivalent: a Dragon Proud Sky. They basically used all the tropes one would use for a male audience brain dead power fantasy, but on a woman.

Bowman C.

I think you hit it on the head, it was an average movie made better by watching the rest of the Marvel movies. Part of the hate it gets has to do with other movies and such that were coming out around that time. I liked it.

DrCatspaw

that's right if they hadn't push the woke crap. then those scenes would have been seen as cheesy. and not angered the audience.

Revy two.hands

I mean its a bit on him for trusting a man eating space horror that can survive with an infinity stone inside it.

Jackie Rollins

The main villian was a Female coded AI. The other aspects about degrading women were accurate to the time period. Do you think women in the air force in the late 80s were treated well? She would have been a child in the 70s or 60s. None of what she experienced would have been out of the ordinary.

Jackie Rollins

people should be able to believe in what god they want, or none.

Revy two.hands

don't follow american sports. but yes treating people different based on the way they look is wrong.

Revy two.hands

Creed is a belief system...One should absolutely be judged based on their beliefs.

Jackie Rollins

Jackie Robinson was DEI does that mean he wasn't a great baseball player?

Jackie Rollins

I think it's the score/music. If we analyze the past movies, each has a specific suit for the hero/heroes, like the Capt'n America one, it makes you feel patriotic, or like the soundtrack for the Guardians movies, it makes sense 'cause Quill is the one blasting music, but here....it just bland, like, the flight scene exploding stuff should've had a banger score, showcasing the strength and raw power of Capt'n Marvel, but it doesn't.

Oatmeal

You know, you might be cooking something.... Yeah, I can see it, she would make a hell of a villain

Oatmeal

yes all this anti white men crap just before the movie came out. was the tipping point. the dei agendas were in full swing. as for the movie it's meh 6/10.

Revy two.hands

look up her speech how captain marvel isnt for white men. that's why people hate her. tho im pretty sure she was just following the new dei agendas.

Revy two.hands

that's right they did. that's why it's stupid to villanise white men the dei woke crap doesn't help anyone. people should be judged by the content of their character and not by colour or creed.

Revy two.hands

I didn't ever really think about this, but if they'd spent just a little more time establishing her 6 years as a loyal Kree soldier the whole movie might have been a lot more memorable.

Rainet

Yeah, whenever you see that Blue-B Ben just beneath you there (not you, KatoBen, as you are also a Ben), prepare yourself to read a really self-important and bad opinion.

Bologna Amputation

God, it's nice to see a sensible opinion on this movie after years of men whining like Brie Larson had personally insulted their genitals in public.

Bologna Amputation

No literally everything the stars anyone that isn't a white male actor gets called woke these days. You can have a character of a different race, gender, or sexuality as a main character that won't be called "woke" by right wing grifters.

DeVaunBeats

You're really here? On Alicia's patreon of all things, bringing up "woke"? You do realize where you are right?

DeVaunBeats

Nothing wrong with liking bad movies ^^ i take that over a brutal mid film. At least a bad movie can be fun because it is bad. A plain mid film is just pure boring.

Jasmin Jakobsen

Definitely an over-hated movie. The backlash was heavily tinged by mysogynists and amplified by the crazy high expectations and tensions between Infinity War and Endgame. That said... considering it doesn't really do anything WRONG, it doesn't quite hit, either. The animation is a lot of fun, the story is reasonably well written and avoids a lot of common pitfalls, and we get some great character moments and callbacks... but it just doesn't quite capture the magic that the best MCU films do.

Rainet

the other problem is it was surrounded by bangers. It had the same issues as IM3 and TDW.

Adam

Definitely enjoyed this alot more havubg that fresh perspective

GrimPitbull

You are an idiot. Marvel's stood on acceptance and diversity since the fucking 50s.

Adam

I genuinely hate this movie. I would still never encourage her to skip it. This movie is the set up for so many other things in the MCU both big screen and small that not knowing the history would be criminal.

Mystchevious

sense we are here now . i do hope in my heart of hearts that a few thousand years from now stan lee and jack kirby are viewed as we view homer

Lance Ivy

I don't think that's true. Where has anyone said that? It's literally just an untrue rumor that the "anti-woke" incels crowd made to justify hating her.

DeVaunBeats

The people who started those rumors were incels who hated Brie for a reason entirely unrelated to this movie. There's 0 evidence she was trouble on set.

DeVaunBeats

Brother you don't even know what DEI is so be quiet. I hate Captain Marvel too because of the way they try to shove her down our throats but none of that is "woke dei". And did you know the entirety of Marvel is then "woke dei" since most of its stories involve lgbtq and people of color. There's literally a character named Black Panther. The Xmen were representing racism in the 60s. Like shut up with the made up propaganda. And btw DEI is in place to help qualified people not get denied in place of less qualified people. To prevent people from whitewashing workplaces with yes men.

Immeasurably Me

Lol that so stupid. She's helping other planers recover from their loss. Like she said, Earth has the Avengers to help them, not every planet has people like them. She's trying to help as many people as she can as possible.

DeVaunBeats

This wouldve been acceptable as a reason not the one she gave in endgame. Half of all life in the entire universe disappeared and she should have been fighting for it not whatever two bit thug she was fighting on whatever planet. I hate her character so much id believe she was just sitting on a beach relaxing and didnt want to admit that.

Immeasurably Me

Another easy to miss reason that fury doesn't call in captain marvel for most things it that it takes bare minimum at least a few weeks for her to get the signal and travel back to earth, at which point its already too late for most of the problems the avengers went up against

winter north

well repeatedly saying this movie isn't for white men was not smart white men are 90% of marvel/dc fans

Revy two.hands

i would rate this movie 6/10

Revy two.hands

it was all the (this movie isn't for white men) media they pushed and the cheesy white sexiest men in the movie. that's what caused the hate, stupid when 90% of marvel fans are white men. this was the start of woke dei that's forced on all marvel products since.

Revy two.hands

Totally agree, would have been amazing to get a truly AWESOME film to put all the incels in their place. Maybe one day!

Timmetry

The tesseract is the space stone, and remember that Goose throwing it up is in the 90s, later we see in the 1st avengers movie how SHIELD was using it to build weapons and portals, and moving forward, loki steal it in asgard again and thats how thanos found the asgardian ship in infinity war

Faroth

When talking about a bunch of women people typically use “women.” It’s plural

Mantis

Cause imo Tom Cruise is kinda bad (and also getting compared to another actor is not great form, unless the actor is dead ig)

Mantis

Shaaaaaaame

Mantis

A lot of the plot relies on twists and as a marvel fan I could see them coming and some even feel so obvious I dont understand why they are in the movie.

Lightinger

Only personal gripe I have is Nick Fury's scar. This is what he was talking about when he was saying he lost an eye to the last person he trusted.

FunkyOnion

I imagine a lot of younger viewers were as confused by 1990s Earth as Carol Danvers was when she landed on it.

Malkalypse

I think when it comes to how they portrayed the character, it didn't really work. In the comics she may have been a take no shit character but she was very, very flawed. She wasn't here. Like, if I asked you what her character flaws were in this movie, what could you say? That she can be too sarcastic sometimes? What else is there? And yea, there were plenty of people that didn't like her for dumbshit reasons, you won't ever see me saying otherwise.

Okoga

True, true Personally I would've loved if Capt'n Marvel was good/excellent and not just avarge/ok, don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with being avrg/ok, but when the expectations are high af, if the movie ain't excellent, it kills the momentum. This project just was..... disappointing in many ways (writing, pr, marketing, fan hate).

Oatmeal

I think people (admittedly me included) don't like the actor then the movie, because the movie isn't bad

CrazyFoxBoi _

I think she just gets casted in the wrong roles. She radiates superiority and authority, why not give her roles like that? She'd make a killer Imperial officer in star wars show for example, make her the antagonist in something.

Rowdeemunkee

Also, Carol/Maria was such a popular ship when this movie came out. Like, holy shit the fanart

RF

It's also hard when the writers are leaning so hard on those feminist themes... makes the line even thinner I think. So many variables have to land in exactly the right place lol.

Timmetry

There are a lot of scenes in the sequel I can tell you love. But there is one in specific that I now know will make you lose your mind, lol.

RF

I know Daisy Ridley (Rey) sure tried too... but the line between enchanting and boring to reach lovable, badass, but non-sexual woman is EXTREMELY thin, unfortunately. :/

Timmetry

Yeah, way too much pressure being applied from both directions. She was pretty much doomed to fail from the start. Of course... this happens so often with women in general. It's a tough world out there. I'm not even sure if it'd be possible for any woman to have the presence of RDJ on screen in this society lol. Would love to see people keep trying! Maybe someone will nail it at some point.

Timmetry

And it was worse since Marvel Studios tried to present Brie Larson as the new face of the MCU and, let's be honest, she doesn't have the presence that RDJ has, fueling the sexist hate

Oatmeal

Part of the problem is that so many people were expecting her to act more feminine, "smile for me" and all that. And she was really determined to play her role accurately to the character, which is someone that never took shit from anyone. It's really hard to be "likeable" on camera by the majority of society when so much pressure is being applied in both directions. And let's be real, there's a certain (very vocal) group that would have never ever liked her unless she either smiled cutely or shoved her ass in the camera.

Timmetry

😂😂😂😂

Ben Yokes

How am I shitting on you? I just find it funny you enjoy this movie. Never said I had a problem with it and yet you’re calling me a cunt 😂 how immature

Ben Yokes

Yes it is you ask a stranger to name 5 actors they will name Tom cruise

Ben Yokes

Most women in our society have been harassed for being too "emotional" at one time or another. Often by men who bottle up their emotions so badly that they end up eventually exploding in anger and maybe violence. It's kind of a trigger word for many women, which makes it relatable and relevant to the feminist undertones. Just like the "you should smile more" phrase. It's not inherently sexist, but it's something women hear an awful lot, and comes across as demeaning in most cases.

Timmetry

I didn't even think it was her hair, I thought it was part of the suit. *shrug*

Timmetry

A man full of secrets no doubt has many engaging stories about how that eye was lost.

Timmetry

Same I really enjoyed it, it's a fun film

Nym

Mostly a small group of very sexist men being extremely loud.

Timmetry

Bruh she'll get there. We're all waiting on a lot of fantastic Marvel movies and other series. Let her go at her own pace. She's feeding us very generously already. :)

Timmetry

Gods your pathetic. Shitting on someone just cause they happen to enjoy something you don't. How about next time you say something constructive instead of acting like a cunt.

Nym

4.- There was also a group of very loud sexist men being assholes. These types were already bashing the movie horrendously by the time the first trailer dropped, so it definitely wasn't a fair assessment of the screenplay. These jerks weren't by any means a majority, but they were very loud and obnoxious, determined to grasp at any straws they could to bash the movie long before it was out. This also helped make PR difficult, like you mentioned, since there were so many noisy haters from day one.

Timmetry

Nick Fury is Winter Soldier: Last time I trusted someone I lost an eye. Nick Fury to Goose: I'm gonna trust you not to eat me.

Cassandra

Bruh, Ben, being called Tom Cruise is NOT a compliment lol

David Bodor

I think what people don't like about the film might be the actress, but then again, I could be simply drumming up the rumor mill that is the internet overall. I have heard Brie Larson can be arrogant and a prima donna on set, but now I don't know if that is just jumping on the bandwagon of what others have said. I wouldn't say it's a bad movie, but it's also not very spectacular either. Fun like Antman and Wasp, but not worth a repeat watch, for the same reasons.

Shrapnel

It’s that boring

Ben Yokes

Exactly she got her powers from the space stone and that puts her on par with Thanos with all 6 stones? It’ll never make sense but whatever. And I don’t know how that other girl in The Marvels is so strong either. The way she got her powers was pretty uneventful

Ben Yokes

One of your favs? Wow this is fanbase the mcu has now 😂

Ben Yokes

You’re in the minority

Ben Yokes

Just because it’s for young girls doesn’t mean we can’t call it shit? If im allergic to shit I lose the ability to call it shit?

Ben Yokes

I enjoy Captain Marvel, but it's definitely one of those Marvel films that feels like it was made out of obligation to make the shareholders happy and take up a release slot.

Rx1867

So the controversy about Captain Marvel was primarily about the fact that she was a woman. Specifically a somewhat out-of-touch, not egregious but also not entirely kosher "girl power" woman. Normal people were kinda eh about it, but it was what it was. Corporate, kinda bland, maybe it could get better in the future after feedback. The issue was that Captain Marvel 1: Came after the Ghostbusters reboot with the all-female cast and 2: Came after Infinity War. The former is most important because it was the exact same chuds for the exact same reasons using the exact same tactics who review bombed and started the firestorm of controversy around Captain Marvel from literally day one, the instant we got the first trailer. It was all misogyny, and under ordinary circumstances, wouldn't have popped off like it did; Captain Marvel is ultimately a mid movie not worth that much vitriol. The issue is there was a perfect storm of disappointment from normies after Infinity War's scale and quality going into CM, just how goddamn successful these dumbasses were in turning another mid and otherwise inoffensive movie like Ghostbusters into the primary battlefield of the Culture War for a good year straight, and the awful influence of social media in exacerbating outrage because outrage generates clicks and ad revenue. After the Ghostbusters fiasco, certain folks started feeling empowered because they saw they could actually have an effect if they were persistent enough in making noise due to the natural inclinations of social media. So they fed into the post-IW disappointment and launched a campaign review bombing the movie and making a HUGE stick on social media. The end result is that even people who didn't hate the movie, but also just didn't feel anything particularly great toward it, end up looking back on the movie in retrospect and remembering the controversy more than the film. Because the film is mid and pretty forgettable save a few scenes and lore developments, so the only thing TO remember is how up-in-arms the entire internet and movie reporting apparatus was about the thing. It no longer matters if any of it was valid, as I'm sure the details of the controversy are as forgotten as most of the film - what matters is that the fact there *was* such a controversy is what's remembered, which sours the entire experience in retrospect. So a relatively middle-of-the-road film gets seen as bad, and Captain Marvel, whose character was the focus of so much of the controversy for being a woman (especially a girl power one), gets remembered as the worst character in the entire MCU. Is she great? Your mileage may vary. Is she the worst in the franchise? I really don't think so, and you'd be hard-pressed to make a strong argument for that given some of her competition, among heroes and villains alike. But the firestorm has so woefully tainted the memory of this film and everything related to it that came after that Captain Marvel is now Captain Controversy as far as any viewer of the MCU is concerned, long-standing fan or not. Everybody is expected to have a strong, clear cut stance on her: they defend her 100%, or hate her existence 100%, with no nuance in-between. It's a shame, and not really in the movie's or even Marvel's control to have stopped or to fix after the fact. Anything that could've come from this first movie, it was irreversibly tainted by the controversy, and we just won't know what could have been or what sort of feedback could have been taken into honest consideration following this had that controversy not occurred. It could've been very different, or it could've ended up with her exactly as she does. We'll sadly never know.

AbsurdToastling

I find this movie to be quite boring and an absolute skip in my rewatches of the MCU. Just a total slog to get through, Brie Larson being an unlikeable actress and her character being completely unlikeable.

Imperial Guard

I used to HATE this movie, now I just think it is mid/meh. While I’m not a huge Brie Larson fan what really made me just want to hate this movie was the fact that Civil war 2 in the comics had been going around this time. And Captain Marvel is the absolute worst in that! She pretty much goes full dystopian sci fi villain and the comics REALLY try to portray her side as an equally valid one, which at the time I very much disagreed with and still do. But yeah after that has had time to leave my brain mostly I don’t hate this movie so much anymore, still don’t LIKE it, but very much don’t hate it anymore.

Flamemaster9

Nothing wrong with calling women females if you’re talking about a bunch

Ben Yokes

Okay? Being petty is the worst quality you can have

Ben Yokes

My two daughters and I love this movie. The only downside I feel is its placement in the release schedule.

John Longoria

Love and Thunder is enjoyable you just have to turn your brain off. This movie forces you to turn your brain off by being so painfully boring

Ben Yokes

Well that and being unlikeable in the actual movie.

Imperial Guard

Mantis what are you talking about? She got a compliment and bitched about it

Ben Yokes

No? Those movies are so boring

Ben Yokes

It’s not about her being a woman the movie just sucks. Doesn’t help that Brie Larson is annoying as well

Ben Yokes

Flastyy are you good? All you have to watch is daredevil, punisher. And the defenders if u really want to

Ben Yokes

oh... so ... to be honest, watching this in 2025, years after the "women take all places where men used to be" fad, you know, Ghost busters and all those female lead "remakes". this far removed from that I don't mind this movie at all.... but it came out at the height of all that sandwiched in between infinity war and endgame. it just bugged the hell out of me at the time....

Silver Blade

The mcus pretty much made it non canon already

Ben Yokes

Which she shouldn’t be

Ben Yokes

It's. Okay. There are some parts I don't like but I don't hate it. Average movie for me with some pretty cool moments.

Sam Smith

Yeah the marvels somehow manages to be worst then Thor Dark World a movie where I was literally fighting to stay awake

Ben Yokes

What’s that?

Ben Yokes

I would because we gotta wait another week for endgame. But once no way home ends I won’t mind her watching some of the lesser quality movies because that’s basically all Marvel makes now besides Deadpool 3

Ben Yokes

OK, now I'm angry. People were telling her to skip a movie??? I'm not a fan of this movie, but I would never argue and complain that she should just skip an MCU film.

KatoBen

I tried to type my reasoning without sounding like a prick but it doesn't work lol. Best i can say is I find the movie lazily made. Also, didn't help that I loved captain marvel (Shazam) as I was getting into DC comics and I was annoyed that he had to have his name changed due to this character.

Girthquake23

The more you beg for it, the less likely she will give it to you

Kaz

I think this movie is disliked by 3 factors: 1.- It released right before Endgame, and being only an avarge/ok movie did hurt it, if released in mid phase, people maybe would be more recipient of it. 2.- It was the first female centered movie in the MCU and people thought that such honor should've been for Black Widow. 3.- Brie Larson was not likeable enough, she got flare and spunk, but like, not enough to captivate the superhero audience, maybe better pr would've been helpful.

Oatmeal

Honestly ill never understand the hate this movie gets. Its a fun movie

Artemis

Stupid AF? Yes Comic accurate? Also yes

Oatmeal

I think alot of the hate towards this film generally came from exterior factors such as the time it was released and brie larson generally being super unlikeable in interviews and social media

CalmDwelling

It is a very mediocre movie that felt very pushed when it first came out. The negative attention definitely wasn't deserved, though there is a lot to nitpick, from Carol's powers making no sense, to Nick Fury being made a joke character who got his iconic eyepatch in the dumbest way possible, to the messaging being really vapid "you can do anything girl" stuff that is just a transparent marketing ploy. It is all stuff that doesn't super matter, but it's there. All this was made worse by coming out between Infinity War and Endgame.

Joel Sasmad

In my experience the movie felt like it was really pushed around it's release despite being pretty mediocre. I think the worst thing in the movie was making Nick Fury a joke character who got his messed up eye in a really dumb way

Joel Sasmad

Awesome much appreciated.

BewearKing64

I have always thought that this movie wasn't that bad, I enjoyed watching it (more so watching it along with Alicia or new viewers really) and never understood why people hated it so much. To be honest it always felt like it was being attacked by the machismo male nerds if that could even be a statement lol. Ones who thought the female cast was weak or something, I don't really understand it, ignorant incel behavior or you know basic male 'woman stupid, not hero man, not good movie' mentality I would assume.

Ryan Richards

Yeah, the people that dogged on this for just being mediocre, wished The Marvels was this at least this level of quality.

Purported74

The reason people hated this was because of gamer gate.

Kawaii Edgelord

I remember hearing/ reading that apparently Kevin wanted to have Carol show up in her own movie around or after Ultron but it was scrapped and or pushed back to 2019

Xeitenketsu

I am of the mind that there has never been a BAD MCU movie, but this is one of the weaker ones. I think that there is a very loud group of people who just want to hate modern MCU and complain all day about a perceived drop in quality or that the MCU has become "Woke", despite Marvel always having been a progressive leaning company. Carol Danvers has never been a really liked character, even before the MCU brought her in she was the 2nd character in the role of Captain Marvel, where the previous person in said role was very well loved. While they give her more character in The Marvels, I think that for most of her appearances before that, they struggled to really give her much of a personality. She didn't have the kind of draw that Scarlet Witch, Black Widow, or even Hope had, she was just kinda there and was strong, hyped up at the end of Infinity War as potentially the person that will fix everything. They have since Fixed this issue, in The Marvels they gave her more of a personality and flaws to work on, she wasn't just "Strong Woman am Strong" (Or at least that is what everybody seems to perceive her as). In Reality Marvel just has a hard time writing Women characters outside of Scarlet Witch until recently, and people liked Flawed characters way more then ones without flaws that matter (Its kinda why Marvel tends to be far more popular then DC, DC doesn't really write a lot of Flawed characters).

Switchchris27

The most confusing ones for me were the ones saying that Alita : Battle Angel was the non-woke female super hero we should all be watching because it was releasing around the same time. I was like.. "Y'all... have you read Battle Angel Alita? WTF? It's basically the most anticapitalist anti patriarchy thing around!"

Anna Kyruin

I loved this movie, and had a good time watching it as a non-woman. I LOVED the 'stand up' scene so much for how they did it. Also, Goose had swallowed the Tesseract and not regurgitated it until that post-credit scene, which is how Fury had it at the start of the first Avengers movie to then bring Loki and start the whole shebang going. The scene was likely to avoid people fretting about Fury dissecting Goose to get the Tesseract.

Jacob

I personally give this movie a 6 or 7. Their writing of the character feels worse later on imo, but going into detail would obviously be spoilers at this point.

Doctor Xerox

The anti-woke videos about Captain Marvel and Brie Larson were insufferable too, I never even clicked on any of them but they kept getting recommended.

Aye Jaye

yeah I agree solid enough movie, a lot of people are projecting feelings about the actress on the character. That and a certain kid of guy who finds assertive women threatening really hate this movie.

Maddie the witch

yeah people say "antman and the wasp" and "captain marvel are like bottom 4 marvel films right above thor 2 and hulk, but honestly they were just traumatized from infinity war and wanted endgame as soon as possible.

Jacob

Regarding why they didn't call Carol sooner, Fury apparently didn't know about Thanos. In the Infinity War stinger, he was still trying to get more info on what was happening over Wakanda just before he got dusted. Without that Intel, without knowing about Thanos and the Infinity stone situation, it would look like things were bad, but not beyond the Avengers

Kyle Bryant

I mean, having the post endgame content we have now, its far from the worst content in the mcu. But up to this film it's my least favourite. Tied with The Dark World maybe.

Rowdeemunkee

WHERE IS MY AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2!?!?!? I NEEEEDDD ITTTT I BEG OF YOU

IshowPot

I never really understood the vitriol surrounding the movie. Like all of the excuses people gave for hating it just never added up. Even the alleged Brie Larson drama was just... Practically nothing? It's a good movie, and being "not as good as" super star movies like Black Panther or Infinity War doesn't mean "bad," it just means it has a lot to measure up to.

Kyle Bryant

I liked this movie ;3;

JoJo

It's not bad exactly it's just meh compared to the other movies specially coming after infinity war and the corporate feminist narrative they surrounded this film with on marketing and media when it released didn't help it

Rick Baron

This is one of those films where I don't really have much nice to say. It's just fine. What mostly bugged me is the meta side of things. And not really a fan of Larson in the role, her other films I like better. Disney was pushing captain marvel HARD. She came out of nowhere in a borderline retcon movie, making her the inspiration for, and the strongest by far avenger going into the final movie? That and it's a very girl boss vibe the internet hates. People were way too mad at this movie because of that.

Rowdeemunkee

Lemme know what you think

Michael

I remember being very at odds with the general public on this one. Captain Marvel was always a sort of write off character for me in the comics, but I came out of the theater feeling very happy. There was a very vocal minority who hated the movie because it was about a strong woman (the same general "woke" complaints we still see every time a woman exists as a lead), and the community in general was underwhelmed by it. I however loved it for being what it was, a decent super hero film with a woman lead. Tap water tastes like the best liquid on earth if you've been living in a desert.

Anna Kyruin

Sigh... okay I'll give it a shot.

Sam Smith

Born Again relies on the viewer having seen WAY MORE of both the Netflix Marvels shows and the MCU itself than Alicia has currently seen, so it won't be for a while

Flastyy

My main issue with this movie is that I think Black Widow deserved this "movie slot" for a solo movie, then they could've given captain Marvel the Black Panther treatment: introduce her first in another movie like avengers, then give her her own movie maybe as opening of the next phase. Though I suppose this "origin plot" wouldn't have worked in this way and it would have needed a completely different script, so maybe that's why they had to release it at this moment? And I guess she needs an "origin" to explain her powers... maybe they should've released it way before and tied it in with Guardians instead since it has some plot points in common. I'm sorry, it's just that I think Black Widow deserved it more. I found the movie itself average, but there are way worse marvel movies than this one like Hulk or Dark World, IMO.

leviathan_13

most of the hate for this movie isnt the movie its self but the actress brea larson as she said some stuff that made a large part of the marvel fanbase unhappy and tie it to being put between infinity war and endgame and being the first female led mcu movie with feminist tones and you can put 2 and 2 together and understand the hate for this movie.... sexist middle age white men who cant disconnect art from the artist and hated the movie for what the actress said and has unfortunatly never died down to the point she kinda resents the role.

Y0GE

I personally loved this film and it's sequel tho I'm a very causal and simple enjoyer when it comes to marvel films as I tend to turn my brain off with them so I end up enjoying most lmao, but even then I've enjoyed both a lot.

Nym

I think this was the start of Marvel requiring too much previous media investment that would impact the next few years. I don't think film/television ever had anything quite like the MCU before though, so no real model to follow.

Jathby Dredas

Ain't nothing like the 1990's being considered a period piece to put the weight of years on my bones lol Our lost temples of Blockbuster and Radioshack

Dyno

While the Ancient One was basically the same character wise sensei, sorcerer supreme, etc.

Randomguy65

Almost everything is connected in some way when it comes to the MCU or marvel in general

JaKighCooperMoore

Oh yeah, I forgot about that.

DrOverbuild8363

I had to do research on kree cause a swore ronnin was kree. I was so confused because of it. Than I understood and realized something greater was going on before ronnin showed up in the movie. 🤣😂 Oh shit that's the cat that scatched his eye 😱 was the general skrull named talos. I worry about him saying no like that

UndeadNovaKing 0

I also found the film to just be fine. But my only criticism was the last fight was a bit too easy. And she could have fought Kree Battle Sentries, which are basically op giant robots. And the decision on how they handled Mar-Vell. Now I do know gender swapped characters existed in both comics and films. Like the Ancient One in Dr. Strange. But I really wished they done more with Mar-Vell. Og Captain Mar-Vell was his own superhero and sacrificed his life, after he was affected by a gaseous weapon that gave him cancer. Freed Rick Jones from his Nega Bands. And accepted Lady Death in the afterlife. What do we get in the film? Mar-Vell just being a regular Kree Scientist helping a colony of Skrulls, which is fine and noble. But nowhere near as grand, when just being offed by the other Kree soldier and the ship exploding. I also appreciate the Skrulls not being the main antagonist.

Randomguy65

Yeah. That and that the othe marvel actors later on described her as insufferable to work with

DaichiOkami

I do agree it was better than I thought it was. The way they did the comedy at some points took me out of it, but otherwise, it's good.

Minidiamant

So from what I remember one of the main reasons people hated this film was because of the attitude of the actor for Captain Marvel. I can't recall exactly what she said but I do feel like it was very demeaning and sexist against men. Or at least it felt that way. And with that in the back of people's mind it made Captain Marvel's attitude and personality a lot less palatable and forced certain scenes like her stealing that guys bike for flirting with her(in a cringey and sexist way) to the front of their minds making her look worse than she is. I admit I didn't like this film thanks to the things I heard about it and the actor before hand. But now after watching Alicia's reaction to the film I'm starting to realize my prejudice on the film made it seem worse than it actually is. Also the fact that they changed something important about the Skrulls from the comics/cartoons/all other media I was aware of that has them in it, but I'm not going to go into that because of possible spoilers.

DrOverbuild8363

Honestly that’s just MCU power creep though. It happens.

PrivateXimmy

The thing most MCU fans who never read the comics don't realize is how much the NERFED Captain Marvel. She's even more OP in the comics.

largo778 .

I've spent the entire movie trying to figure out how so many people said they were disappointed by it. It was awesome! The classic Marvel action with some side of comedy, just enough so that it doesn't become annoying, a great backstory for a character we've known for several movies, a cool origin story for a character that wasn't part of the MCU yet, an explanation as to why she wasn't there to fight against Thanos... I see literally nothing wrong with it. If some douchebags actually saw some sort of "girl boss propaganda" type of BS, it wasn't there. It's a story that would have worked just as well if Captain Marvel was a guy, they would have just switched up with the drunk pilot making fun of him for being weak or feeble, just like Captain America was, because that was the only time her being a woman was really pointed out. There was no sexualization of her body, no message about fighting for women's rights (aside from actual historical facts about women not being allowed to fly into combat at the time). But there's literally no underlined political message, if people see one then they're creating it themselves. It's just a fun movie to watch and enjoy, great characters (Absolutely loved Talos and how incredibly relatable he felt, not the usual "aliens don't understand the way we feel" kinda deal).

KeterLordFR

Tbf that’s how I felt about cap 4 as well. Compared to Ant Man 3 and Marvels, I kinda liked it a lot

PrivateXimmy

prob after Daredevil since shes got that series and not even sure if she knows about The Defenders that connects to that or even the new show Daredevil Born Again, theres so many series connected to Marvel is really is insane lol

Xanbry

Secret invasion’s the only thing in the mcu I genuinely wish was non canon. Considering how later projects contradict it anyhow, I bet the writers think so too

PrivateXimmy

Fair enough. I personally just dislike the "emotions" theme. Had Carol been the Kree commander from the start, loyal to the Kree empire and only started getting "emotional" when she started learning the truth, it would have made for a far more interesting story and character. But instead, in order to relate to the women who keep getting told that they're "emotional" by douchebags, they made her struggle external. I explained it in another comment here, but I think the story for Carol fails because she's the solution to her issue, but not the cause. Had she herself been the one to "control" herself, it would have made the "I am Carol Danvers" moment so much better. Had she actually had a reason to hold back instead of doing so because they told her to, it would make her finally letting loose a satisfying moment of self-actualization. Then again, this just makes her comic accurate, because people hated comics Carol too.

N00B

"Last time I trusted someone, I lost an eye" Yeeea that line hits alittle less hard knowing how he lost it

Rowdeemunkee

I remember the marketing, there was a lot of “badass woman” pandering and a lot of gross misogyny as backlash, it was a mess. I don’t agree that the movie itself was political, to me it was just a mid superheroin movie. That’s just my thoughts though, everyone interprets things differently

Mantis

I get that. She seems super obnoxious and that comment was definitely fucked. I can see how it would put a damper on her character and this movie. That said, outside of her personal conduct, I don't see nearly enough to justify how much people have slandered this movie.

Richard Sinclair

ENDGAME IS NEXTTT WOOHOO

Barbaryen Boy

You should watch agents of shield you'll be surprised about coulson

JaKighCooperMoore

Its more with the movie's marketing and general themes. It leans heavily on having a woman protagonist both with the marketing prior to it and with the "emotion vs control" theme, which I explained in the previous comment as to how it relates to women. It'd be one thing if it was just a good or bad movie with a female protagonist, but it instead focused heavily on its political message, making it the target of critique as well. And in the discussions following it, because of its themes it did more harm than good because it gave those who were genuinely just sexist a win which helped them accumulate following and credibility.

N00B

Also, there’s more than one type of feminism. Your mom seems really cool, but sometimes that situation doesn’t fit in every instance

Mantis

Seems to me that you have a problem with the movies writing, nothing to do with anti-feminism. You can not like a movie without finding something problematic with it. Going with your gut is a super common trope dude, you don’t have to point out that it’s a woman doing it this time. And I don’t see how your critiques have anything to do with Knuckles quote

Mantis

So I'm guessing you didn't go to the cinema for Love and Thunder then?

Mieguy

Now you’re just being pedantic. Women often experience misogyny. A woman character experiencing misogyny is realistic and relatable. It wasn’t even a big focus, it was just relatable little memories and moments that women often go through. Just cause you don’t experience them doesn’t mean it’s out of place

Mantis

Yea I never watched this before and that wasn't NEARLY as bad as people said it was. My only problem is that her hair sticking out of the suit like a mohawk looks kinda stupid to me. Definitely agree that it's just average.

Giddo

Carol isn't the one calling attention to it. The movie is. It can be based on reality and still mishandled. As it is depicted here, it doesn't depict the actual struggle women go through properly. Carol is told that she's unstable and emotional, which is a common and bigoted description of women, but instead of disproving it, the movie rewards her for leaning into the stereotype. Carol doesn't really struggle like real women do. The obstacle she overcame was just the Kree trying to gaslight her, which while being a real issue, is solved by her just... solving it? And even in the montage, she fails (with the racing one attributing it directly to her letting herself get annoyed at genuine advice) and instead of her adapting to the situation, we see her get back up, but not her trying again. It depicts her getting mad and failing as a success. If anything, its telling women "ignore logic and self-improvement. Rage at the issue and you will somehow succeed." which is never the case. My mom was a single mother and started her own tailoring saloon while raising me. She didn't accomplish that by raging at any advice given to her. She accomplished it because she was resilient and because she found solidarity with her friends and family who supported us. That's real feminism. Resilience and solidarity, not emotional rage and power-fantasy. (That last part isn't relevant. I just wanted to explain why this topic is so close to my heart.)

N00B

Women are frequently seeing flashbacks to things they don't remember?

sandbun

Well, when someone makes a comment about a collective of people based on skin color, people of that skin color might take offense to that.

Randomocity732

That quote WOULD be appropriate if in any instance Carol does something badass she CALLS ATTENTION TO IT (like the quote) “see men, I can be badass too!” What you quoted is probably word for word what many women pilots hear. It’s realistic, it’s relatable

Mantis

Loved this movie! Loved your reaction. I really don't get the "meh" reaction folks have to this one, but to each their own. Also, Carol and Maria are a couple in my mind and you cannot change my mind on this XD

Joey245

She was pretty unlikable in interviews and stuff but I disliked her even before her being in Marvel. I think she just isn't a very good actress and this movie didn't make me think any better of her.

Okoga

That’s just something women often go through when their workplace is filled with men. It’s supposed to be relatable. It’s not pointing out anything, it’s literally what some women go through. You’re heavily misusing Knuckles quote and he would be ashamed of you. In that context Amy straight up pointed out loudly, “I’m a woman and I can do just as well as the men!” That has NO connection to making a believable and relatable woman character

Mantis

Yeah to add to the other commenters, I know a lot of people didnt like the actress in this movie but carol denvers in the marvel lore was exactly this, she has NO charisma (in the comics), and knowing stan lee, he probably mentioned to do that to offset her insane strength and not to make yet another superman type character. The actress, intentionally or not, played the comic character of captain marvel perfectly.

Michael Derryberry (Marusame)

Yeah people got on the hate train for this movie and Brie Larson before it even came out just coz Brie said in an interview that critics for i think the golden globes awards should have a range of different people judging rather than just old white guys, and some white people took that as a personal attack against them

Mieguy

For me it's a Mary Sue problem, no adversity.

Joker33

Honestly saying "I'm the first me" is not bitchy at all, being compared to others can suck in the best cases, let alone being compared to Tom Cruise lol. I feel like people read malice into response when there isn't any.

David Bodor

Gosh i remember the anti feminist movement about this movement. Seriously so cringe worthy when looking back. This is just a fun movie i say, hard to do so with Spy stuff Didn´t help the movie that Brie had to play Vers as a Emotionless soldier, really makes her emotions subtle and too subtle at times which probably is the main take away i feel this movie suffers from

Alex Larsen

"Its called a cockpit for a reason." As well as the entire memory sequence. You could also make the stretch that her being called "emotional" by the Kree could have been a sexist remark as well, since that's a common bigotted stereotype about women.

N00B

It’s really exhausting going through this again and again and again when a mid to bad movie stars POC or women characters

Mantis

Really glad you watched this one. I know I had fun watching this movie, and the highlight for me was Fury, I won’t deny though, it is one of the weaker Marvel films, thought I think a good part of that, is because it was following on the heels of Infinity War, and with how big and crazy that one was, it’s difficult to maintain the hype. I feel that the game Mass Effect Andromeda suffered a similar failing, launch issues notwithstanding, it’s actually still a really good game, but it follows on the heels of Mass Effect 3, the Finale to the original trilogy which was MIND-BLOWING! So I feel that for both MEA and Captain Marvel, expectations for fans were SUPER HIGH, for releases that were never going to measure up to past releases, for one reason or another. Still really great movie and fun, Carol is a Blast and seeing Fury again and how he lost his eye was fantastic. Really looking forward to Endgame, can’t wait, you’re gonna love it… oh, one thing, there’s a cut scene from Endgame that didn’t make it into the movie, where the team is watching the battle in New York against the Aliens Loki was leading, highly recommend you look it up and give it a watch after reacting to Endgame, you’ll bust a gut laughing 😉.

Richard

I’m curious, when did they call attention to Carol breaking gender norms? To me it seemed like everyone rolled with her being a woman and she didn’t have to prove herself. Even her mentor was a badass woman. No one called attention to it

Mantis

First time watching this movie and uh... what? THIS is what people have been slandering and lamenting as an awful movie? Seriously? I mean, it's not the greatest Marvel film, and it definitely is the weakest movie in this phase so far, but it's not nearly as bad as people made me believe. Solid 7/10 for me. My only real complaint is that Brie Larson is a bit wooden in places, but she finds her swing as the movie goes on. Not seeing the whole forced "female empowerment" nonsense either. Carol Danvers was quite literally meant to symbolize "the modern woman's quest for raised consciousness, for self-liberation, for identity", as stated by writer Gerry Conway, way back in 1977. She's not the product of some new trend.

Richard Sinclair

I got no thoughts on what kind of person she is cause I’ve never seen her in an interview or anything, but if I was an actress and got compared to Tom Cruise I would be pretty bitchy too

Mantis

This is my first time seeing Captain Marvel, and I actually enjoyed it a lot. It’s definitely not bad, but it’s not as good as the peaks we’ve seen. I’d firmly call this movie an above average Marvel film. Honestly, I’d even call it one of my fav’s for this phase which is a hot take, but I think that there’s some merit to it.

Yovan_Night

But she IS a woman. There’s nothing wrong with her being a woman and experiencing some of the negative things women experience. It’s for the women in the audience to roll their eyes and be like “been there,” that’s how people connect to a character. Stripping a woman character of everything that makes her a woman is a bit insulting and says that women can’t be good characters unless they act just like men

Mantis

I don't think she really sucks. She was just the focus of a weird incel hate campaign. Like weird internet grifters like the quartering really hated her for some reason.

coocooman4504

1000%. I didn't love the movie. I thought it was kinda mid, but people acting like this was a terrible movie in comparison to the rest of the MCU are just listening to the opinions of Internet grifters.

coocooman4504

I mean hell, even Brie Larson herself (the actress who plays Captain Marvel) was subjected to the exact "Smile More" comments many, many times throughout the course of her MCU ventures. But she always refused! She said none of the other heroes were smiling during their cool poses, so why should she? She's arguably the strongest Avenger by far, so it was a big deal for her to stand her ground so proudly. Respect.

Timmetry

Watching this movie for the first time awoke a memory of mine from the trailer where the biker guy says gross stuff to her and she punches him in the nose (did I blink and miss that moment or did they take it out of the final film?) and a bunch of weirdos were like “OMG shes so mean she’s supposed to be a hero?? He just said stuff and she’s so violent omg” it was super bazaar. Those folks in particular where def seeing themselves in that guy and were butthurt, or maybe it was a bunch of people hating on the actress

Mantis

It's honestly frustrating

NERD!

That said, I do agree that some of the female empowerment themes were a bit heavy-handed. Though personally, I think it's a breath of fresh air. There are a lot of boys out there that need this shit drilled into their heads before they'll get it. And a lot of women have had to deal with subtle abuse their whole lives and just think it's normal.

Timmetry

"You know Amy, whenever someone calls attention to the breaking of gender roles, it ultimately undermines the concept of gender-equality by implying that this is an exception and not the status quo." -Knuckles Theodore Echidna I can't believe noone else beat me to it.

N00B

okay i dont love this movie but its just pretty mid. which isnt bad. the unnecessarily violent amount of hate it got on release (and still now) is so uncomfortable and usually carries like a weird misogynistic tone to it, which is so frustrating because there are legitimate flaws worth pointing out but i hate criticising it at all cuz it makes me feel like im in that same group

blorbothefrog

I realize my opinion is going to be unpopular, but that's fine. I'm not going to pretend that this movie was a masterpiece, but I'm also not going to pretend that the response to it was entirely sincere. The problem with movies with any sort of anti-racism, feminist, generally progressive messages, but especially ones made by big studios, is that whatever subtlety was ever written into the character, is quickly stripped off of it by the studio. The messaging feels forced because the general public is so media-illiterate that things need to be spelled out in order for the text to be understood. However, this is true for other kinds of movies. The transformers franchise sells toys and the US military's supposed "coolness", the Narnia movies and books are about Jesus. No one bats an eye at those and they're not subtle, either. These kinds of movies(called "woke") never just get to be movies, they always have to be held up as perfect pieces of art that perfectly encapsulate the essence of what they're trying to represent. Bad movies can just be bad, mid movies can just be mid, good movies can just be good. But "woke" movies are always considered bad BECAUSE they're woke. Again, this movie is nothing special, but there were other mid Marvel movies before it, and they didn't get even half the hate this one got.

Balmung

@Mantis But that was my point. This movie's plot doesn't have anything to do with her being a women - it has to do with her having these powers which the bad guys would try to exploit whether she was male or female. That's what makes those scenes (and there are more than 2) feel so out of place, like a studio head insisted they be in there. I'm not saying the movie as a whole was a man = bad film, just that those scenes always felt out of place in what the movie actual was.

sandbun

It is a fun movie. Fury losing his eye to a cat scratch it's a massive story potential loss and kinda lame.

Julio 🤔

Let's be real, most of the people obsessively hating on this movie are just misogynists. Not all, but a good number of them. It's far from the best Marvel movie out there, but it's definitely not terrible. Though a lot of incel-adjacent dude-bros were big mad that it shined a bad light on some of their toxic behaviors. And others just couldn't handle the main character being female.

Timmetry

Huh?? There are only like two instance's where Carol is dogged on for being a woman, and those men didn’t even have names. That’s just par for the course when you’re a woman in a male dominated job. Literally every named male character was either on her side or fought against her not cause she’s a woman but because they were bad guys and she was in the way. How in the world is this even attempting to be a “man = bad” film

Mantis

I think by "woke" most people mean "pretends to be progressive and uses it to make itself seem more valuable/good than it is." I think games like Dustborn and Concord are better examples. I wouldn't consider this movie "woke" though.

N00B

Cat throwing up the stone is not present day fyi.

Okoga

Honestly most of the MCU hate is overblown in my opinion.

Felix Rojas V.

Not a huge fan of this movie, but definitely don't hate it as much as....some people. Brie Larson sucks but that is completely separate from the movie.

Okoga

I fully agree it is average, It lands in a 5 for my own rating. Carol is a fun character in afun movie (assuming you have seen the Marvel series) and It gives a bunch of backstory which is just fun. It is a fun movie and does not deserve the "I am skipping this, it sucks". I feel that the people who HATE this movie either try to treat this as an affront to their personal existence or part of the "M-She-U" people. I love this reaction because you actually rate it fairly and have very valid compliments and criticisms. I really hope you continue Post-EndGame and do the shows also, They are all Good, not amazing or groundbreaking, but good.

James T Williams

About the overhating, that's pretty par for the course with the MCU. Each of the first three phases had one movie that wasn't as good as the rest and got dogged on because of it, when in reality the MCU at its worst is just "ok". Even nowadays after the "fall-off" there's still only a few projects they've released that I'd outright call bad. The MCU's standard of quality was so high for so long that anything below that gets flamed. Captain Marvel and Ant-Man 2 were both fine but them coming in between the two biggest and most anticipated and acclaimed blockbusters in cinematic history makes them look a certain way in comparison.

Ellerian

But the framing of "control vs anger" especially with the Commander contributes to it.

N00B

Yeah there is always someone telling her what she should be doing. It just happens to be men mostly.

Felix Rojas V.

Good old Tahiti

Felix Rojas V.

cap marvel released before endame, cap marvel appeared on endgame and they needed to explain why, she is following the release order, remember that in infinity war fury usied the intergalactic beeper to call for help

Faroth

I don't think that's the message, considering her friendship with the Skrulls and Fury who are also men. I think it's more about her overcoming the people who took her from her home, lied to her, implanted her with false memories, and put limitations on her, and her breaking through it all and stopping them.

Brandon Dodge

Honestly liked this movie a lot more than I thought I would. Maybe cause I thought it’d be terrible. I really like Carol as a character and it was fun seeing Fury in a bigger role! It wasn’t even written badly, it was just pretty dang mild for an avengers movie. Maybe it would have been better received if it was released a lot earlier, me thinks

Mantis

For me, I don't hate the movie. It's just boring.

Karma

Bruh it's Snow White, why the F would you care? You're what I assume is a grown a$$ man, Snow White is a story for young girls.

David Bodor

It was silly, but I like the idea that the whole "Last time I trusted someone" thing is a bit Fury does, he's the only one in on the joke, but he finds it hilarious.

Technical_Analysis

This movie did Fury 100% correctly. Secret Invasion on the other hand...oof, that is a trainwreck.

David Bodor

Yeah cuz Fury never lies to manipulate people...ever... Nah, I love that he puts on this big image in front of others about it, it's so very Fury

David Bodor

Personally I loved the eye thing. No amount of badass serious scenes could have ever done the eye justice, so I find it neat that they subvert it, make it something deeply silly and human, because Fury despite the mask he puts on, is actually very human underneath it all.

David Bodor

If you want more of Agent Coulson go to tahiti, I hear it's a magical place

Myles

I love Carol just casually holding the Tesseract in her bare hands and tossing it around like it's nothing. Then later asking Fury if he'd like an oven mitt to hold it with.

Timmetry

The movie isn’t the worst, but Cap. Marvel as a character is kind of boring.

Moviejunkie

Nah brooo Captain Marvel is one of the worst characters is comic and movie form I feel like marvel movies struggled with females

SOUL AGONY

Alicia you need to make room for the first 3 Indiana Jones movies IMMEDIATELY

Christopher French

I honestly see nothing wrong with either of those things. Plenty of actors are praised for doing their own stunts lol. How is that a bad thing? It's not 'shafting' anyone. As for her responding to Chris Hemsworth, that's not a real argument or spat, that's like a mild sass to both sides, people really blow things out of proportion. The thing is, a lot of folks were pre-disposed to hate her already so they make an elephant out of a molehill whenever she does or says anything.

David Bodor

I think the movie's attempts at a feminist message did ruin both the story and the message. Especially the "emotion vs control" theme at the beginning and near the end feels weird as it tries to be uplifting for women who feel controlled and disenfranchised by the men in positions above them, but ends up depicting women as emotional and unstable, which is kinda more sexist. They should have had Carol be the commander and already be in full control of her emotions and fully loyal, so that the realization that she's been on the side of the bad guys has some weight. It would have made the reveal and the character arc better if she was the one gaslighting and limiting herself. The conflict should have been personal and they made it external.

N00B

I've always been curious how much studio heads messed with this movie, because part of the framing just messes with the actual story IMO. What I mean is, there are two ways of making a badass women film: A) Have a badass who happens to be female (think Alien), B) Have someone dealing with things that, while not entirely, largely more affect women (think Jessica Jones). The way the movie is written, Captain Marvel is #1 - she's a badass who happens to not have a penis. But the way the movie is framed, we're constantly reminded 'Hey, don't forget, men are the worst! This is what feminism is, hating men, right?' It feels like, to me anyhow, someone wanted it to be the 2nd type no matter how little it fit the actual plot of the movie, and made sure to include a bunch of stuff that didn't really fit in the movie and I'm curious where it came from. But who knows. It just feels disjointed to me.

sandbun

Yeah I definitely remember this movie better in theatres its alright but I’m just hype for endgame

Ben Yokes

Watch dr stone please it's really good after whatever future movies or shows u have planed

Demonsabath67

I cant wait for endgame, hope she just do it now I dont want to wait another whole week XD

Freellua

She also said she does all her own stunts and completely shafted her stunt doubles for no reason. She got pissy when Chris Hemsworth called her the next Tom Cruise and she had to fire back, "I'm not the next Tom Cruise I'm the first me." She was unlikeable from the beginning. But this movie was at a time when the Marvel snowball was rolling so it did well.

Michael

2:05:21 - That was still in the past, in the 90's that Goose threw up the Tesseract. That's how it got to being researched by Fury and ended up in the hands of Loki in Avengers 1

David Bodor

Okay see now we're starting in on the era of Marvel films I didn't watch so I'm very excited to see these for the first time alongside you and the community :)))

Koirby

The end of what?

The Lazy Gamer

I mean he litterally trusted a space eldritch horror in the shape of a cat that ate 6 people and an infinity stone. Sooooo....It is accurate. Also Fury is often known for fudging the truth for more drama

Jackie Rollins

2:00:50 - A sizeable portion of the hate came from the youtube grift machine, it was still in its earlier stages, but movie with woman hero attracted them like flies to a pile of **** and Brie Larson being the lead actress? Well, a lot of grifters churned hate videos on her already, heck they still do it to this day, all because she had the audacity to say that a movie about fairies was not made for grown men and well...You can imagine how well men on the internet took that. Not every movie is made for the same target demo? That cannot be! Anyways, it's not that the movie is a 10/10, it's not, but it really did not deserve the online hate. Though the hate kinda pales given it made pretty big chunk of money, it's actually among the top earners for Marvel surprisingly enough.

David Bodor

I completely agree that this is not a bad movie, it doesn't deserve all the hate it gets, there is worse - this is just average/good. like you said - I wouldn't watch it again if it wasn't in reactions, but I like all the easter eggs and Fury.

Mike

"Woke" has become a catch all for problems. So, Ozone279...Did you like the Snow White remake?

Tyler Owens

I really like Captain Marvel, but I am sucker for an overpower protagonist.

Corbeau

Love the commentary/reaction, definitely came into this more open minded. Still this being my 3rd rewatch for this movie, it's disappointing as ever, poor story writing, poor direction and sub-par acting. Captain marvel is one of my top 10 almost top 5 character in the marvel comics. It's so frustrating seeing, them make such a lackluster movies. Captain marvel had the potential of being one of the best marvel movies and they hoed her character so badly. Still I do admit there is some cool scenes I missed but over all this movie like 4 or 5/10. A lot of people like to talk about the interviews Larson gave, which were kinda messed up to her co-star, but tbh I didn't care about that. I wanted to see a good captain marvel movie and Disney/ marvel failed to deliver. Oh well onto the next, gotta leave this pile of sadness in the rear view.

burntbean20

really? pulling the ''woke'' card? i find it funny that when anyone bitches about woke i end up enjoying it FAR more? maybe don't pretend to care about something if all you do is complain about nothing or hate whatever a doomtuber tells you to hate?

Ozone279

Alicia’s rating on the movie and her review as well as why it is seen as underwhelming were my thoughts to a tee as well after I saw it. Had they introduced Carol earlier in the run and not before Endgame the beeper scene at the end of IW probably would have hit better. To me there are worst movies than this one, and two of them star Thor.

Robert Collard

1:53:30 - I always loved this twist on it, it'd be 100% like Nick Fury to turn something silly into something he can use to put on a mask and manipulate people with. It's exactly like the Captain America trading cards with Coulson, he just presents this big image to achieve his goals, but he does have a very human soul underneath it all.

David Bodor

When you have people spouting sexist disgusting shit to you like they did to Larsen and you decide to respond back you are always seen as controversial, which is 100 percent happened here.

Robert Collard

I kind of like it. I mean technically he lost his eye to a dangerous alien creature. Something able to kill and consume a room full of enemies.

YukoValis

The sequal has the same main conflict as spaceballs. Not even joking

Colin Darcas

It was mostly just cuz she was really unlikable in interviews before the movie. She kinda shit on her costar to make her self look cooler. Which isn't cool. I do think it was a bit overblown because she was a woman who was playing a very obviously feminist role. Which sucks, because her gender or the feminist theme of the movie shouldn't matter. If you want a reason to not like her I think her unlikable personality is enough.

NI Hartley

I'd love to see Alicia react to the deleted scene with "The Don". It might clarify many of the feelings surrounding the movie. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nDFLLV9RaZM&ab_channel=MovieList

This movie is broadly fine/ before watching Alicia’s vod I’m cautiously optimistic as before the ant man/wasp rewatch my feelings were much lower than on the second time. I’m hoping for a repeat but we’ll see

David-Isaac Howell-Jones

"Compared to absolute dogshit, this was okay" isn't really saying much lmao

Flastyy

YAY one of my favorite marvel movies, I love Larson as danvers.

Lucifer Moon

Going to the cinema to watch this movie, was the greatest waste of my money ever.. I stayed to finish watching it, but my god it was aweful.. But as soon as it was over, i was out of there!

Hallreaver

That's exactly what she's doing, even if they were just 1 month apart, Captain Marvel released before Endgame

Flastyy

It was woke.. Just like how the new Snow White from disney is..

Hallreaver

Yes

Vendacator

This movie got some good parts, and some bad parts. I feel the reason most people call it terrible has more to do with the actress for Carol. I've forgotten what the whole deal was personally, but she ended up being rather controversial. Politics or some nonsense probably. Usually is.

SouthHill

The movie itself is not bad. (The negativity came mostly from the behavior of the main actress in interviews and such) I don't mind the change in gender for Mar-Vell...just that they took all of her powers away (they basically took Mar-Vell's love interest Una and swapped his name on her) All in all, the movie is absolutely passable with some great scenes

FlaschenJoe11

I can't believe I let those dumbass bigots on YT tell me that this movie was awful, it's genuinely a good film, I am so glad that I've finally watched this movie now, thanks!!! My only issue is the fact that Fury's messed up eye was from a cat, which kinda sullies the coolness factor of it for me.

Model_124

was really hoping she was going to endgame next cuz of the relase order but oh well T_T next week peak arrives

marlanes

I want to point out again is that Coulson's last wish was to give the Avengers a push. That was the last thing he said. So yes what Fury did was messed upon how he lied, but I have no doubt it was something Coulson would have wanted.

YukoValis

Can we all agree how Nick Fury lost his eye in this film was so stupid. Especially from the Winter Soldier film where he said: "The last time I trusted someone, I lost an eye." And this was the big reveal. SMH dude!

BILL XIONG

Its pizza crust. If you get to the crust, it doesn't matter how bad or good the middle was. The crust breeds nostalgia.

N00B

Just a reminder, but we don't have the Tesseract anymore. It was an Infinity Stone that Thanos took.

Game Dragon

Crliticism of this movie has always been weird. Although I feel that the movie is bland to its core (feels like something from a marvel movie conveyer belt), the initial online outrage of the movie has poisoned the well. I think the Quartering made like 20 videos on it because of “woke”

Loro

Oh absolutely. It’s one of the pieces of media that I get nervous to talk about just in case a dude who calls women ‘females’ starts agreeing with me.

Otterplasty

She said it was average, so 5/10

Joe Shmoe

Looking back this movie was not as bad as I remember it. It’s a slow burn for sure but it’s definitely in the above average category for the movies we’ve gotten so far. And what we’ve been getting recently makes this movie look like a masterpiece

18C

and that's the thing, isnt ad, is just not good enough, specially since they tried to speedrun the kree vs Skrulls wars, well knowing they would do series later, they could keep the SHIELD agents lore and use that for their advatage, but apparently agents of SHIELD lore is both cannon and not used at all, specially later on for inhumans and all of that part that was very well executed in the show but completely ignored in the movies

Faroth

I do not like this movie, but the hate it got when it first released and still gets is kinda weird and makes me uncomfortable.

NERD!

I think she portrayed Captain Marvel perfectly. This is exactly the kind of person to try and impose a martial-law super-dictatorship and try to arrest Miles Morales for a crime he may commit in the future.

N00B

quoting doctor Strange: "we are at the Endgame now" *sounds the avengers intro theme*

Faroth

I'd argue that's the worst. Any truly bad experience still has the fine lining that you could learn something from it. When something's just "meh", there's not much to appreciate, but there's also little you can learn from its failure.

N00B

FIANLLY OMG WE R BACK BABY ]

Thinkace

Can't wait for Endgame

Erik Nilsson

What this movie and Secret Invasion did to Nick Fury is unacceptable.

Ricardo Romero

nah i understand what they're saying. Just look at the Marvels, its sequel.

Joe Shmoe

Movie is awfully paced and the acting is sub par. A lot of the new stuff is actually fun and good, just no matter what they put out now, it’s fun to hate on. People think Shang chi and Eternals are bad, and will stick to it lol. Even the Marvels is a super fun time, if u watched the show prior also.

Jack Collins

No. No it is not😂😂

Jack Collins

yeah this movie is so ass lol

Chinji

The amount of yawning you did throughout the movie is hilarious and justifying. I did the same thing when I first watched this.

Gai Valentine

Honestly I will too. The biggest takeaway from the movie in my opinion is just that she’ll show up in the next movie

Chronos Hoffman

Honestly compared to a large chunk of the recent Marvel fare, this one is top tier MCU. Compared to the MCU at the time this came out, it was definitely the low point.

PotterBrony

There's nothing better than Alicia's MARVELous Monday to start the week!

Chamoun101

The movie was good, but nothing about it was really noteworthy. There were no scenes that will stick with me. It does have a LOT of cute moments which endears it to me. If this was early marvel I'd say it would be a great film, but it isn't. Now we wait for the peak. Oh I will say she isn't like superman or anything, because I've seen people compare the two. Her power is basically channeling energy from within like a battery on top of being a trained warrior. In a way she is a lot like the Human Torch from fantastic 4. Only instead of just fire it is a much more powerful photon energy.

YukoValis

After what was revealed what Disney did to Stan Lee. Makes me sick. They had no sympathy at all, all he wanted to do was rest and all they wanted was to milk the cow until it turned bone dried. Then Disney and Marvel had the audacity to use his image and online accounts to promote their films after he died!

Robert C. Dona

I don't hate this honestly but it's really mid especially for this phase of the Marvel films. It's aggressively fine, Larson is aggressively fine, I like seeing more Nick Fury, Skrulls are pretty cool. Captain Marvel has a lot of cool things about it but it ends up being less than the sum of its parts by the end.

Patrick Waldeck

Damn i thought we were gonna get the amazing Spiderman 2 before this lol not the best movie but loved to see u react to it

Darryl Gilbert

What was her rating for the movie?

BewearKing64

Gotcha.

Michael

Maybe I’ll just skip this one

Big Fuze

The biggest issue with this one is that the self-actualization story doesn't work if the character is the solution to the problem, but not the cause. In Iron Man it worked since even though Obediah and others did hide some things from him, it was Tony himself and his willingness to ignore responsibility that allowed it to happen. His realization that he can put an end to the issue only worked because he was the issue. With Carol, the story just goes "Yeah, you're awesome and we're trying to gaslight you into thinking you're not awesome so we can control your awesomeness." which is just unsatisfying. If she was more straight-edge and followed orders with full devotion, only to slowly realize the people she wholeheartedly believed in were the bad guys all along, it would have made her realization more interesting and even made that "going with your gut" bit with Fury work better. It would have also made the twist better since she would have been at a position that would properly cement her identity as a member of the Kree army.

N00B

This movie was damaged but the lead actress, Brie Larson, attitude. If you don't know about it, look it up...because the situation happing to Snow White is similar to what happened to Captain Marvel.

Tyler Owens

We truly are

Vendacator

Ah, plank, I didn't miss you

Vendacator

definitely the most "Meh" of the MCU to me, didn't completely hate it but it's at the bottom of my list for Marvel movie rewatches

Vegvisir92

I know a lot of people don't like this one, but I loved it.

David Bodor

I like it well enough. Certainly not going to say it is a high tier Marvel movie but I wouldn't call it bad.

ChaosSepher

I have never felt more...mid? leaving the cinema when this came out. Was not abysmal or anything like that. But compared to all the great movies in the MCU it just felt so average.

Jasmin Jakobsen

Wooo I know a lot of people didn't enjoy this film but personally It's one of my fav's, found it absolutely hilarious when it first watched it and it's tied to good memories.

Nym

Eh, she's better in drama than as a hero who's stoic and inspiring.

Silver Screen

I figured lol. Glad I didn't watch it back in the day.

Michael

Yeah. "The Marvels". A sort of collab between the three heroines with Marvel in their name. Was not good. Internet laughed at it for a long time back in the day. Also, was a box office flop.

Michael

I genuinely had no interest in the character beforehand. As some would say, it wasn’t made for me.

OscarGrump

People didn't like this one.

N00B

Let us hope no one will be weird in the comments (they will be)

nervouspirate

Oh good. A Marvel Monday. I had a exhausting weekend so I need a perkmeup. Also...we're in the Endgame now

Lee Aguera

Captain Marvel being considered stronger and treated like a bigger deal than Thor and Hulk will always be stupid to me

Enchiladas

My favourite three word review: "Saw Captain Marvel" - Hideo Kojima, March 16, 2019

MarakamiSG

No joke, I’ve literally forgotten everything about this movie. Forgot the Skrulls were even in it. This movie just slipped out my brain

Maseo Jones

i was excited to check it out but honestly the movie felt really boring to me.

Zach567

Ho boy the internet was on fire for this one when it came out. Not in a great way

Rowdeemunkee

For me when I saw it in theaters I was like "ok endgame is next that all that matters" I'm not a huge fan of Larson even the other actors weren't either

Noah Benner

I didn't know that it had a sequel

Nightmare Spyro

I mean, great performance in "The room" but like, an actor can do so much with a shitty script

Oatmeal

I remember watching it opening night and being so sad. I think this movie is the beginning of the end.

hypnofish

I'm not ashamed to admit I like brie Larson as an actor

roxannesimp

Did anyone like this one? I didn't watch it back in the day. And the sequel was abysmal.

Michael

NEXT WEEK GONNA BE PEAK

Sean Cruz

The beginning of the end.

Marcello Reyes

Now only endgame awaits

Sirghostfreak

We love to see it
