Man I'm so torn on this movie. I know it's good, but the way they tore apart cyclops, redid rogue, and made the asshole woman stealer also somehow the gentle father figure is so frustrating. Then all other media followed suit until cyclops got with Emma Frost and gave him a little bit of his personality again.

The problem with eat the rich and the 1%er is that it ends up with the romanov kids or their equivalent in history being executed.
At least they do it in separate rooms, so the parents don't have to watch their kids get executed.
It is a good sentiment to share the resources but you have to remember that the "rich" are people too.
Many are just born into money and many evil psychopath just like the so called "empathic" and "caring" bunch who killed the children of rich/noble/royal families whenever a magneto kind of person took the lead.
The one series that I have seen actually deal with this kind of cycle of unfairness and hate issue plaguing mankind is unironically naruto...
Even then the answer was not ideal and borderline a naive copout as it was similar to Xaviar philosophy and that too is... Not always going to work or would only be temporary.
I wish just ppl never go full magneto or senator waterpuddle.

Cyclops in pretty much any media but the comics was so bland and one-note. Even Logan began to show respect later on. Cyclops’ powers are actually much more crazy than explained in the movies or shows because he basically has a door to another dimension composed entirely of this endless energy right inside his eyeballs. He’s a tactical genius, trained in martial arts, and willing to put himself on the line for everyone else. The X-men 97 show on didney is great as a sequel to the classic 90s cartoon. It also has enough context to be able to go in without having watched it, for the most part.

sympathy in this case isn't saying he's right but just saying he's understandable. From his perspective as someone who survived the holocaust he see's mutants as the next oppressed class and doesn't believe humanity has it in them to accept them. Like, yeah, taking that logic to where he's taken it makes him become exactly what he hates, but that's literally a part of the point of the character. (to use the school bully example you gave, a lot of school bullies behave that way cause they are treated the same way at home. I can sympathize with that and feel sorry for them while also recognizing what they are doing is completely wrong and that their trauma doesn't justify their actions)

Yeah I get the distaste for Cyclops if the only real experience is the movies. His whole role (as Alicia grasped) is leader. He's the team lead, a tactics expert, and canonically supposed to be pretty charismatic as well.
He's very le million (MHA) coded with his power as well, it's such an awkward, weird power yet he finds ways to make good use of it and fight toe to toe with more directly powerful mutants all the time.
The Force
2025-04-13 01:31:38 +0000 UTC
Something to be considered too about Magneto's targets is that many of them could've been stable depending on what type of mutations people got. Who knows what the % that would be, but still.. there was a chance that (even with a lot of death) Magneto's plan would've worked if any leaders were converted and lived.

2025-04-13 01:01:49 +0000 UTC
Really hard to have sympathy for magneto, considering that he wants to kill all non-mutants. "oh but he was at Auschwitz" so? Does surviving a "death camp" give a person freedom to slaughter billions? What if you survived an attempted murder? how many do you get to kill because of that? Or what about high school bullying? What level of suffering does one have to go through to get a pass on murder?

Well, i think Rogue HAD to do it. Something about her draining mutant ability and the sci-fi mumbo jumbo meant that Magneto couldn't be the one to do it, it specifically HAD to be her. I mean, if it could have just been any old mutant he would have taken Logan who likely wouldn't die, or at the very least could handle it longer and he'd be able to manipulate Logan's body very easily. So clearly only a specific type of mutant could be used for it. I'm sure SOMETHING more was explained in the movie but we both just missed it lol but I think if all he had to do was sacrifice himself, he would have easily and very quickly done it.

Dude, I love the questions Alicia goes into like with Wolverine having difficulty/pain from the adamantium skeleton. Yes, it really was a major stress on his muscle fibers and everything. A major reason why comic Wolverine is such a beefy ball of muscle is because his healing factor enabled him to strengthen & adjust to the added weight of lugging around a metal skeleton. It's also what lets him continually fight off any metal poisoning.

The movies did Cyclops dirty (and sometimes don't even get his powers right - it's not a heat beam but concussive force). Also yeah, it's kinda unfair contest vs Hugh Jackman, but in the comics, Scott is far more the looker than Wolverine. He's 6'3" tall and 195lbs and Olympic athlete level fitness (through work). Logan certainly gets around, but Cyclops always seems to be going steady with some telepath. Cyclops is also an amazing tactician in comics and is more skilled in hand-to-hand than people give credit. I'm so glad recent shows like X-Men 97 are showing a bit more of his potential.

OR, hear me out, don't take roids and don't set unachievable standards for children? Like the fuck?
It don't think SAYING it's roids is the problem, I think taking the drug IS the problem. If they say they are natty and a kid believes them and "wanna be just like their heroes" they will struggle for an unachievable goal that ends with desperation leading to taking roids.
In the end of the day, just don't take the roids man it's fucking dumb. Especially Hollywood for basically pressuring most of their actors into taking drugs as well

At first I agreed with the whole why don't actors admit to being on roids, but the reason most say they aren't is that anyone who works out enough or gets into that sphere knows they aren't natty, but imagine a 12-16 year old who sees that and hears it comes from roids, and what would they do? That super impressionable age is now prevented from trying to engage in a permanently changing, damaging or dangerous life altering choice.

Damn, the first 2 Xmen are great, but watching this travesty of a Cyclops adaptation, and knowing the shitting on will only get worse, is so painful.
Scott and Jean's romance was a cornerstone of the Xmen, and even when they were apart their dynamic of parents and teammates was a huge part too.
These movies set his character so far back. He's Peter Parker to Jean's Mary Jane Watson. And he's the goddamn Captain America of the X-Men, their leader and moral compass, but the movies decided to make him Captain Cuckold instead.

in this film it's definitely a mix of both, plus the differnt attitudes of the two, they're playing up the early days of the relationship in the comics, they always butted heads, and they always fought, and each were vying for one jean grey, the old days of marvel wrote the dynamic very ham-fisted:
one the more stoic, calculated leader that wants his team to follow orders and to do the right thing, and then you have the lone wolf that does his own thing and often defies orders even if it's for the moral good.
they mellowed them out over time, but when jean gets brought up (after she died in the comics) often the arguments flare up again, always a love triangle, which is a bit funny given that scott falls for madelyne pryor disguised as jean in the comics

Alicia's right that Logan is in pain 24/7. Adamantium is extremely toxic, so he's constantly being poisoned by it. His healing factor is also slowed significantly by the adamatium, and he weighs well over 300lbs because his skeleton is coated in metal. Considering how fast he is and how quickly he heals regardless, think about how much faster he would have been without the adamantium.
Gabe

I never really liked the premise of X-Men as an alleory for prejudice.
Don't get me wrong, the comics and movies do a great job discussing the topic, but as an analogy it fails because frankly, if Jews could accidentally wipe out entire city populations by merely existing history would have turned out way different.
You could argue that that is part of the meta narrative since by giving us an actual reason to fear mutants, it gives us a first person perspective of how prejudice is excercised, allowing us to rethink our normal behavior by contrasting potential prejudice with it.

the xmen movies, at least X1 and X2, IMO are important entries into marvel movies. these are the movies that got kevin Feigie into marvel comics, he wanted to make movies like superman. he was a movie buff not a comic buff. so he took it upon himself to do the research into the xmen while making X1 and X2. this is why wolverine in X1 is more like a delenquint thug and in X2 is more inline with being a primal animal, because kevin feigie became a marvel superfan while making these movies. without these movies, we wouldnt have the MCU. period. the x-men movies IMO are part of the extended MCU, even before the fox deal

This was fun, but goddamn the spoiling in this was insane. A lot of leading and not subtle tells. I understand having someone react with you, but this reaction would have been soooo much better without the weird spoiling for no reason, especially when thing were about to be revealed like 5 minute laters.
Having someone who has already seen the movie reacting with you is fine , just have them restrain themselves from spoiling so much shit for no reason.

"I will not spoil" She says as she spoils 'metal powers', villain being sympathetic so we know it is the one with metal powers, 'a long time ago' being the 56 years so we know the man on screen is the villain with metal powers etc.

I know there's a difference between the movies and the comics, so I'm just judging movie Magneto, and I just could never be really sympathetic to him. I get that he experienced horrible trauma and he does say things that are true, but then he acts the same way as those who he hates. The worst part is that he's an absolute coward who is fully willing to sacrifice someone else, that he supposedly would consider a sister, another mutant, against their will because he's too much of a pussy to put his own life on the line for his conviction.
If he had gone in that machine himself, despite the risk of his life, I could at least respect him. But now he's no better than those who caused his trauma in the past... well maybe a little better, but he's still a bigot and a racist.

Adora spoils so much. The fact it hurts is a great reveal when rogue asks him. You dont definitively know until it shows the numbers on erics arm but adora spoiled that too. She gave alicia the cyclops hate bias. If it was twitch chat theyd have been banned or sent to the dungeon. I prefer the solo reactions or where both people are blind.

I really really miss movies being this subdued. Every movie now is trying to be the most over the top, loud as shit, in your face, written for idiots experience. And anything based on a preexisting IP goes only as deep as "Here is thing you recognize, please clap and point it out!"
Its the equivalent to people saying a shit game is great because you can pet the animals. Shallow as hell and has nothing to do with the gameplay itself.

I don't care how popular The Matrix was at the time, those black leather getups looked dumb and lazy back then and they look even worse now. I was so happy when X-men '97 poked fun at this. Heck, Astonishing X-men #1 did that as well. Even considering the time period, the idea of trying to make comic book characters look less like comic book characters has always been such an ass backwards idea, especially since 2 years later, Spider-Man blew that idea out of the water. Can you imagine if Raimi's Spider-Man had a costume like the ones in this movie?

X-men keep staying relevant because the message keep being relevant.
You simply switch mutants with any minority group and you will see a lot of the speaking points of the politicians.
Funny you should mention Wolverine's height, because the crew went to great lengths, with digging trenches, putting actors on boxes and cheating with camera angles to make him look the shortest.
You laugh at "old man yaoi", but there are A LOT of pictures of these two old guys goofing off and being cute together.
Ian McKellen is gay and a huge activist for queer rights.
And while Patrick Stewart is straight and married, he is also best friends with McKellen and a huge supporter in general so there are also several pictures of them making out at public events to spread awareness

And IMHO X-Men 2000 would not have happened without Blade 1998, and Blade 1998 would not have happened without Batman 1989.
Another way of looking at it though is that the MCU of some kind was inevitable because all of the kids who grew up with these comics and TV series were getting old enough to make and/or watch movies. It could have gone much worse though if they hired the wrong people (like we've seen with so many bad super hero films that don't respect the source material).

Nobody asked, yet my friendly/nerdy reaction to their brief banter about 'One Piece' and pacing --
We currently have 'One Piece, The Animated Series' which is and always has been supplemental media for the manga.
Rather than being the same thing with "better pacing" -- 'The One Piece' (from Wit) will be the first anime adaptation of 'One Piece.'
Being excited is rad but let's be clear that adapting manga and supplementing manga are two wholly separate things.
Sorry to chime in with this sort of comment whenever pacing or filler gets mentioned. Probably won't stop.

While I will admit I am not that caught up on my X-Men meta lore, I am pretty sure both Magnetos helmet (Which he has been wearing since his first appearance), and Wolverines popularity were well established before this? Like, Wolverine was already one of the most popular X-Men in the 90ies.
Totally agree that they greatly affected and influenced the X-Men. Just wondering a bit about your examples.
Edit: I put my brain slightly to work and realized you properly meant that Magnetos Helmet Being able to block Telepathy is a movie thing, that got into the comics. Which from what I remember is true.
Wolverine I will still say was already very popular already when these movies came out, but I agree that they most certainly didn´t hurt his popularity.

Fun fact, these movies were very influential on the X-Men comics and the franchise as a whole. For example, Magneto’s iconic helmet was not a feature in the comics before this movie came out. The movies also played a significant role in popularizing Wolverine as a character which led to his predominance in X-Men media going forward.
