I had real high hopes for this one, since I really like Black Widow and Captain Marvel beat my expectations. But once Taskmaster showed up, one of my top 10 Marvel characters (formerly top 5 even), I just knew I was going to be let down.
Now either this movie actually was a 5/10 for me in its entirety, or the first half was so forgettable that I can only remember the nice enough second half :/

50:00 the issue with Disney and Hollywood is that they despise Femme Fatale character type.. they hate the point that a woman uses her strength in her beauty to sway the outcome her way, instead they want her to be all muscles and flat in their personality like terminators, not showing any femininity at all except for being toxic and snarky thoward men

big disagree on the talk about "powerful women" a character can be a b*tch if it's written well, Cpatain marvel and all the characters in the movie were awfuly boring, I watched the movie 3 times rewatching the mcu and don't remember a single scene. I'd rate Black widow a 6/10 it's still a good action movie introducing some cool characters even tho there are a few issues in the scenario. Captain marvel is a 1/10 sicne watching grass grow would be more entertaining.

I disagree with this. A series like Game of Thrones would not work if all the characters were written to be either gender. Having a society with gender roles and biases lends a certain verisimilitude to a world. But maybe I’m misunderstanding your comment.

The screenplay for this one was done by a man who also wrote for thor: ragnorok. Apparently he also has uncredited writing for spiderman homecoming, and antman, which shows that hes more of a comedic and innocent type of writer, but then also has worked in infinity war and endgame😭😭😭. Hes got good credits so idk what went wrong here

Mj, captain marvel, wanda, natasha, maria hill, peggy, ant mans ex wife, ant mans new girlfriend, aunt may, the wakandan women, the valkarie, lady sif, pepper potts, gamora and nebula and many more women have been written well by marvel, so i dont think its fair to say the way yelena was written in this movie is marvels attempt at writing a strong modernised female character. I think they was literally going for a bitchy younger sibling who lives in spite because of the way she was raised. Therefore i dont really have an issue with her dialogue and overall character. However, there are some characters in the future that raise question marks

You're in the Marvel decline now. I've of the opinion that the only thing of any quality to come out after Endgame is No Way Home and that's a 5/10. It has 10/10 highs but 1/10 lows.

On re-watching this over and over again I kind of enjoy it more but it’s still a bad movie compared to the other Marvel movies. Disney did Scarlett Johansson dirty. She should’ve had her own movie before her character died on the plus side all these characters they introduced go on to do much better Stories, including one coming out this May which I’m very excited for you should probably watch the Hawkeye series because it’s actually a really good series and it continues the storyline that we’re on.

Rhodair
2025-04-18 00:21:39 +0000 UTC
Yeah, and even "skilled assassin with photographic memory" undersells his skill - it's like "photographic reflexes" where he can perfectly mimic any action after seeing it once. He may not exactly have super powers, but someone being at the fighting skill level of the world's greatest.
What always urks me is they should just make a unique villain if the character's going to be entirely different! It always sucks when they tease the name and imagery, but then character gets completely cast aside.

2025-04-18 00:19:26 +0000 UTC
Yeah, i did not like this movie, but nothing makes me mad more than the fact that they wasted taskmaster on this, in the comics, he is a badass mercenary with a photographic memory and a top-level threat and they could have used him for the latest captain america movie, but just wasted opportunity making it a part of this movie. I would have loved if this movie had been about hawkeye and black widow in budapest, cause i feel like they should have had a joint movie like that for both of their origin films but wishful thinking i guess.

i really dont like how much hate this movie gets. like sure its not perfect by any means but i actually really enjoyed this movie. like i cant mention i enjoyed it without people shitting on it, and yeah i agree it has issues but its frustrating trying to engage with it now. it shouldnt have taken this long for a standalone black widow movie, and i agree that the quality isnt on par with like. endgame. but compared to literally any other og origin movie? like compare it to thor, to cap 1, to iron man. its certainly nothing special but its a pretty normal origin movie, which is really what it shouldve been treated as. people are just way too critical of every single scene when they watch it and its hard to enjoy when every moment gets made fun of instead of just. watching a movie

Yelena herself isn't a new creation, she's been around for decades but the only people who knew who she was were the people who think of her as Black Widow's (subtextual) girlfriend.
In the source material she's no more Natasha's sister than Sin Mal, Bronya, and Seele are, she's someone who in the grand Toxic Yuri tradition, idolized Black Widow, grew to hate her, became obsessed with her and was sent to kill her, and became her ally, and THEN when she gets mind-controlled, it becomes Doomed Yuri that packs a punch
Spy vs spy stuff has such a strong history of romantic undertones that it looks like Disney wanted so desperately to avoid them being shipped together that it wrote these versions as siblings
Verdigree
2025-04-17 08:03:49 +0000 UTC
Normally, I agree with you, but she’s supposed to be a bitch because she’s angry at her sister. She blames her sister for everything that happened to her afterward being sucked into the red room having all that torture done or losing her family even though it was a fake family. It was still her family. She grew up with them as a small child And then when the black widow leaves and joins up with the avengers, switching sides, she’s left alone with all of her abusive Russian people and so of course she’s being a snarky bitch because she thinks her sister is a coward.

Yelena didn't show up for Endgame because she didn't exist for it. The same with all the other Widows, Melina and Red Chunk. In a way this is kind of why I don't like a lot of flashback movies.
Fight choreography was pretty good, the 'present day' family moments were usually fun, and there was enough subterfuge that showed the writing of Winter Soldier wasn't a lost technique. While there was a fair bit of backlash over Taskmaster being a girl (he's a man in the comics, also one that around the same age as Nat) I didn't mind it for the MCU, I was a bit annoyed that they finally 'explained' Budapest in this... half-assed manner.
However, I think what ultimately doomed this movie, was that it was both done too late, and poorly handled for Natasha's final appearance in the franchise.
Though aside Black Widow, I'm now curious how you are going to handle phase 4 proper. Guess I'll have to wait until Monday.

I feel like this movie gets unnecessary hate. Its not the top-tier but its a decent spy movie.
I think the movie struggled between the light hearted sister banter and the really dark subject matter. They bicker so much and I love it, but it clashes with the dark trauma story at times.
And Natasha is pushing away the sister/family dynamic because this is RIGHT after Civil War, when her new found family just tore itself apart. She is very much in a bad space. Recall with her buddy that got her the ID she is pushing him away too.

Pleeeeeeeeease don't skip the shows! Wandavision and Falcon & Winter Soldier should come before Black Widow. A lot of the shows are great, like Wandavision is amazing and Falcon&WS is really good too. Plus lots of movies assume you've seen the shows that come before them, like the woman in the post-credits scene of this movie is someone you should have already met.
Of course, seeing the shows wouldn't have saved this god awful dumpster fire of a movie. But still.

Slop Movie No. 1 of 5 is in the books! Hopefully she loves Shang-Chi. This was the first time I really felt like Marvel had lost some of its magic after Endgame. It was weird—after spending six years hearing a friend complain about Marvel movies, I suddenly found myself feeling the same way for the first time.
Sadly, I’ve had that feeling with quite a few of the movies and about half the shows since then.
Here’s hoping Marvel can keep the momentum going with solid content like Daredevil: Born Again and (fingers crossed) Thunderbolts! Also Florence Pugh is gem and i cant wait for her to take on more a role in future movies!

For me this is one of the worst movies ever and it is because of personal reason ofcourse. I hate what they did with task master. He is such cool villain, having photographic memory. Copying moves of the person he fights but they made him just throwaway villain, when he was such cunning and smart villain. Ahh downfall is real. Only movie I hate more is Dr strange 2. Looking at the timeline I felt both this movie and Captain Marvel could have been done immediately after Civil War and that both being where they were hurt them greatly, though COVID obviously hurt Black Widow more.
To me the only good thing about this movie is bringing Florence Pugh into the MCU, as I think her and Iman Vellani of Miss Marvel are far and away the two actors who fit their roles perfectly post Endgame.

this movie should have come out years before endgame, like in phase 2. sad that hawkeye and widow didn't get an introductory movie like the other avengers. and the reason yelena was so angry and bitchy at the beginning is because she thought her whole family betrayed her. she didn't know it was a cover, like she said, she thought they were really her family.

Yeah I did tell you earlier that after the MCU peaked at Endgame, it's all downhill from there... If you thought this movie was disappointing, oh lord just you wait, it's only going to get so much worse from here! Black Widow is nowhere near the worst MCU film, and further entries just keep degrading/reducing in overall quality and become more and more painful to watch as the series de-evolves overtime... Sure there is occasionally a decent film here and there (I'd say let us pick which ones you should watch next, it will save you so much suffering), but for the most part the MCU has consistently gotten gradually worse overtime... If you still want to continue watching the MCU, then prepare yourself for the absolute worst going forward, as Marvel slowly goes all the way downhill until it hits rock bottom, and then goes even further below that as MCU digs its own grave deeper and deeper to no conceivable end, much like Disney itself!

I think what made this movie so rough was that the skeleton of a good movie was there. The writing wasn't the skeleton, obviously, but instead of fleshing out the skeleton properly, it's like they slapped horse meat on a giraffe skeleton. I feel like at least half of the writers were at least mostly trying.
(Unlike Dr. Strange 2, where the skeleton was in pieces and the writing team was doing the screenplay equivalent of jerking off in the audience's faces)

The start of Disney + was the beginning of The end of The quality from some Marvel movies. The writer ve got Not enough Money but also have to make a larger fanbase Happy. This movie for example was Just a month in The theatre and was very fast released on Disney +.
The next bs ist Kevin Feige said you dont have to watch The TV Shows they produce in disney + to understand The movies . Yeah The Clash between Yelena and Hawkey Happens in a TV Show. 55:50 so this movie is not one of my favorites, but i do like Elena a lot, and Alexei banter was fun sometimes, and the dry humor of the mom "we are going into a vertical uncontrollable dive" etc. but for this i do believe that the movie was made during COVID times so maybe they were limited on logistics and bringing characters like Barton etc? i dont know.. i definitely feel like this movie could have been much better if it was before infinity war and if they cut the BS on the "female movement" thing.. no offense but i used to say i was a feminist but now i say i'm an equalitarian i guess... because the feminist movement has been contradicting in what they want to be seen as vs what they do or say, so i believe that it's even affected writing and plot points because of that unrealistic garbage and agendas

I think that this movie suffered from it's time in Development Hell. It kept getting changed and pushed back and it really messed with the flow and it came out at a really bad time.
While this is definitely not one of Marvel's best movies, I don't think its actually BAD, I think its just a 6/10. What the movie does well is the Family scenes, they feel like an actual family. Yes Yelena was a bit pissy with Natasha, but I think her feelings towards Natasha were 100% Valid, as she thought her sister completely abandoned her, and Natasha did completely cut all investigation into the Red Room by doing what she did and not following it up with proper investigation. While I know the writing in this movie could have been better, I think it is Accurate writing in A LOT of scenes. People don't talk perfectly, they are sloppy creatures who often say things they don't mean or say the wrong thing entirely out of Anger or out of Misunderstanding, and they have had a ton of misunderstandings and been told a lot of lies their entire lives. Every time the family was on screen together I loved, it felt so damn real. I love Red Guardian and I like Yelena more then I like Natasha.
I can't wait till you start watching the shows, I think you will like Yelena a lot more once she isn't being hampered like she was in this movie.
Also, the Widows aren't super soldiers, they are just very good assassins thanks to their programming. While some of them would still be good soldiers, I doubt most of them ever want to fight again. Its not like they would have been of use against Thanos either, Natasha really wasn't either, the Widows are mostly Street Level characters, they are good at fighting other humans, but they aren't even as strong as Cap physically. Their programming made them ignore pain and human emotions, and made them into good fighters, but that programming is gone now, they would have the same motivation to fight as anybody else would. If you saw Thanos coming towards you, would you rush in to try and use Judo on him?

I am surprised you said you hated the first hour, considering you also liked the first 10 mins a lot. The middle definitely slugs and the end has some bad visuals, but not the worst Marvel movie imo, definitely better than Hulk 2008 for me. I know the production of this one was pretty fraught.

Natasha deserved a movie sooner. I didn't watch this movie till now because when it came out I was thinking "You just killed her!! You should have made this before endgame!" It is partly why i don't like the Captain Marvel movie, they made a movie introducing a new character, but don't do Natasha's until after she's dead.

I think lile 60% of thos movie was good, but the other 40% kinda leaves a bad taste. Character wise I think they were good, Yelena was fantastic here and in Hawkeye and I liked Red Guardian too and I am really excited to see them both in Thunderbolts. World building wise having a bunch of widows out on the world is cool, of they do something with it in the future. The biggest issue was Dreykov and the dumb mind control mcguffin and the constant exposition dumps

Taskmaster is the only MCU adaptation that reaches the lows of stuff like Deadpool in Wolverine Origins. I definitely blame Pearlmutter and his idiotic ideas on female led superhero movies. That guy is the main reason there wasn’t a Black Widow movie at a time when it would make sense.

Honestly Alicia, you're probably better off skipping Shang-Chi and Eternals because they're not much better IMO. Since I'm seeing it on multiple independent comments now I'll add in: Movie audio is much quieter than Alicia, I dunno how audio mixing/recording is handled just thought it's worth mentioning. Especially since we (my friend who I edit for and I) noticed recently that the preview on her audio meters aren't wholly accurate with a recent OBS update (they appear to be a good balance with her audio but are super quiet specifically when getting audio from browsers/video players.)

Strong opening, God damn, ruined in an instant because "here get a small whiff of this powder"

Ooooh nononono Alexei didn't send the sisters to the red room! They got sent back to the red room after the mission, Ohio was part of their training.
Alexei couldn't even have done anything about it, since he got sent to prison after the mission. And if he wasn't sent to prison, his options would have been to rebel, alone, against Soviet Russia or defect to America to be killed on the spot to hide the fact that Soviets had a super solider and to get rid of the damage he had caused. Dancing on the edge of a blade, death on both sides and the edge being prison for life. He never had any say in what happened to the girls.
Agreed about the movie though. It's not great, but it does have bits that I enjoyed. The family dynamic is great and I love their personalities, even though the mom is a bit dull. Her personality fits, but that doesn't really help me like her.
The movie suffered a lot of production... "set backs" to say it as kindly as possible. Basically Marvel execs didn't want to make it for the classic movie exec reasons, Covid lockdowns, it was generally a mess from what I've heard. I'm assuming the horrible green screen scene was added to make it so that Natasha didn't kill people this movie, which I get, but my god is that stupid writing and the scene rushed as hell. No joke, they might have forgotten to finish that scene.

There is no reason imo to believe Alicia is being bad faith or performatively mean to any movie. She’s given no reason for me to think she would do that. Occasionally she may or may not fuck with a movie to a degree that might confuse me, but as long as she’s being good faith in her reactions, I don’t care.

I don’t get why they changed so much about task master. Putting aside the gender bending, task master had the mental ability to memorize and replicate people he fought to a T. In doing so however, he sacrificed his memory. This often leads to unwitting betrayals, and pieces of his past he forgot catching up to him tragically. To me this is WAY more interesting than what the movie gave us.

I do feel like you were being overly harsh to this one. You seemed to enjoy most of it. You made a very long point in saying Yelena was being a bitch, but like she just got done being in a car wreck and was bleeding out. It seemed like she was just agitated. You also talked about them telling and not showing. I understand that I really do. The movie was doing a misdirect since Nat left out key details. They made up for it later with an actual showing. I know you are doing this whole Queen persona thing now, but please don't stop being just you. There was a lot of meanness in here that I don't remember seeing before. It concerns me.

I’m only speculating that there’s pick up shots in this movie because some of them reek so heavily of “Covid Production,” but the movie was only a month or 2 from coming out when full lockdown started so idk. Marvel’s been known from the start for shooting some shots really late for various reasons, but they’re such random shots here.

Cinematography wise, I am gonna warn you that you are entering Covid era Marvel. i think there was a couple pick up shots in this one, but later on you’re gonna be able to tell that no one was in the same room and Hollywood was hanging on by a thread. There’s some bangers imo, but the vaccine didn’t come out until Wakanda Forever & Ant-man 3 were in production and even then there’s some major actors in those movies that were anti-vax.

Yeah, Far from Home marked the drop off point for Marvel. Shang-chi, Spider-Man 3, Guardians 3, and to a lesser degree Dr. Strange 2 are the only ones worth watching when it comes to the movies. Idk what your plan is for the shows but there’s quite a few you should probably skip. It’s upsetting to think that it’s possible for you to get sick of Marvel due to trudging through the bad shows and movies. Oh and Deadpool 3. Thank god for Deadpool and Wolverine.

This was pretty much what a lot of people were saying about the mcu projects post phase 3. The movies after phase 3 are still decent but the filmmaking is lazy and it eventually becomes an obvious cash grab relying on the marvel reputation to keep fans coming. For me the only projects i really really like are shang chi, across the spiderverse (i count it as mcu) and no way home. No way home was still lazy but its still top tier idc😂

Honestly, when it comes to the MCU Disney+ shows, you could probably still do them as a weekly monday thing, just do them as like, 3-6 episodes a week depending on the length of the series and the length of the episodes. For instance, Wandavision has 9 episodes, mostly half-hour with a few longer ones. 3 a week, or 5 and then 4 a week would be roughly equivalent to a movie per week.
They really are important for the movies. Not only does the followup to the end credits scene happen in the shows, but you need Wandavision to have context for Dr Strange 2, you need Wandavision *and* Ms Marvel for The Marvels, you need Falcon and Winter Soldier for the most recent Captain America movie, You'll need Loki for Deadpool and Wolverine... Once they folded the tv shows into the same creative division as the movies, they started actually caring about what happens in them.

Blame Perlmutter and contracts. Dude didn't think woman (or black people) would sell toys so he wouldn't clear a Black Widow film (or a Black Panther film or a Captain Marvel film) and by the time he was gone, Scarlett's contract was set up to Endgame. Had to wait for it to end before they could re-negotiate for this film. And then Covid hit, fucking up the production and release.

This was a fine 5/10 movie, but they really should have released it earlier
