I know they killed a lot of people, but I can't help but feel sorry for them They suffered though genuinely the worst hell imaginable to the point it broke them mentally, they did need to die, I just feel like they shouldn't of been made to suffer in their last moments. Gods I feel sick after watching this episode.
Edit: I fucking regret watching this damn show cause now I'm sitting here crying my eyes out and feeling like I'm on the verge of vomiting man fuck this

Some stories don't have happy endings but for Hansel and Grettle this was probably for the best.

I kind of like how the show is set in a really shitty period and how much of that world history it uses in its story.
The sad part is I remember reading about Ceaușescu, in history class and the effects of he had on Romania.
How the orphanages were full of all kinds of abuse from staff and the older children who learned said abuse and took it out on the younger ones.
About how once Ceaușescu was deposed the orphanages got shut down and most of the children just got thrown onto the streets to fend for themselves despite most suffering from all kinds of disabilities, diseases and mental issues from their time in the orphanages.
They had to shut down international adoption of Romanian children because of the rampant trafficking to unsavoury people.
Which just makes the twins story sound plausible enough to make you sick again
At least the next story arc is a lot more fun.

And that is why I love Balalaika, and this ark in general. Really hits home how dark this world can be.

This whole arc is so depressing and I can't even joyfully look forward to the next OP drop because it's probably not gonna be joy-filled based on where the story is currently at D=

My second favorite arc after the S3 one. It could do with a lot of improvement. I.e. not devolving into sexually exploitatively shots of the two child villains. If I watch this series with people I always mouse past those shots because they don't need to see 'em and I don't really wanna see 'em again. If those scenes used a little bit more discretion shots it would ahve conveyed the same effect but without being borderline child exploitation.
But I appreciate it that it brings up a legitimate and real dark thing that happens all the time when countries fall or are invaded and broadly gets ignored by the world at large. And cloaks it in the insane B-movie action that is Black Lagoon. But outside of that every scene discussing them is serious and even the coldblooded mobsters are like "okay yeah this kinda sucks." And then wisely the manga never tackles a subject like this again. It shows the absolute nadir of Black Lagoon's world, our world, as a reference point, and then moves on.
It's also kinda funny seeing the wide variety of reactions different kinds of people have. Everyone is grossed out on some level, but it definitely ranges from viscerally disgusted from more reasonably adjusted people, to just "damn that's dark" from irony and shock content poisoned people like myself. The amount of infinitely worse content I've seen as a kid browsing the web, both fictional and in one or two cases unfortunately real, is a sad thing. And its the only thing I like about the general sanitization of the internet that has happened in the past 20 years or so. At least now kids have to put in decent effort to come across that stuff which makes it much less likely to come across in on accident (foooooor the most part, from what I understand 4chan can still be a minefield and it's so easily accessible).

It was nice of Balalaika to respect Black Lagoon's neutrality, which is probably as nice as she can be as a crime boss. This arc is a hard watch, because normally it's just criminals killing each other, but this arc reminds you of other horrible activities organized criminals do. Here I think Rock starts to slowly accept things even if it's against his normal, moral compass.

For tortured characters like them death is sometimes the only peace they can find in the end. The rest of series gets better though.

I have to disagree with calling it bad. Beyond the combat... which is always over the top and stylized in this show, it is just horrifying and sadly real.
A major part of this show has always been showing the horrific things that we don't see or ignore. Like the Nazi's in S1, that shit exists to that kind of an extent. And we know that churches are used to smuggle illegal items across borders too.

Yep.
This arc is just a bummer.
With the nazis, you got the cathartic "Kill em all!"
This is just "Here's a fucked & vile thing that happens." And that's it.

Coming from a guy who watches a lot of crazy exploitation horror, this arc is insanely disturbing. When I recommend this show I deliberately tell people to skip this arc. This coming from a horror lover who constantly recommends movies like Terrifier, Cannibal Ferox, and the gates of hell trilogy. Yeah, this arc is just a little too uncomfortable.
