Of course the empirical evidence is that Toei is making it worse , be it for an agenda or probably just for comedic effect. However amidst the complaints, while some are valid, there is also lot of copium imho. A lot of people that can't reconcile that within all versions, the main traits remains. That Sanji is great, chivalrous whenever he can be, but also a horndog and simp at heart. Sometimes i even wonder if the louder voices about this really do like Sanji, or are projecting some hope of him morphing into their wishes, that he would somehow shed those traits away. It likely will never happen, even without Toei messing up. Oh wait, it will happen actually, but in the sanitized Live Action

Zarathos Daimaoh

There's a whole discussion about how Toei Animators and directors could be potentially screwing up Sanji's character after Whole Cake on Purpose, making his worst traits even more exaggerated than they are in the anime compared to the manga, and also reducing his screen time and minimizing his cool moments in favor of showing-off Zoro in a disproportionate way. Of course... we don't know for certain if this is actually true, Grand Line Review has an excellent video on the subject that i recommend everyone to check out.

She’s basically Sanji in the sense of how Sanji simps over Nami and Robin more than other women, but in Yamato’s case, she simply/idolizes Oden to the point of wanting to be Just Like Oden ever since he died and she real his log book. She even started to refer to herself as a man in order to be more like him.

What are you all talking about?? Yamato is Oden. Nothing else. No gender, no sex. Only Oden. With Humungous hungolomghnonoloughongous. So yeah, don't call them trans, woman or man. That's misrepresentation and ignorant. Yamato is Oden/Oden and I am definitely Odensexual. πŸ₯΅

The thing about yamato is that he doesn't have gender dysphoria at all. He's got soul dysphoria literally just a whole other dude like a specific dude not just a male stuck in a female's body type situation but a specific dude stuck in another persons body. They are not transgender they are transperson.

yyoudothis

Yamato is best Waifu

I just love the fact that even Kaido, the BBEG of this arc, can still recognize and respect Yamato's gender preferences. Even though he opposes Yamato's dream of becoming Oden, he still recognizes Yamato as his son ... as does the entirety of the Beast Pirates. Then again, with as much fetish gear that crew wears, I'd hope they'd be more accepting and forward thinking about such things.

Sturstryk

All we need is for Yamato and Okiku to meet Ivankov. But yes, I like Yamato's "chest" better this way.

The Yamato gender discussion often fails to recognize a few things in addition to the cultural aspects Alicia mentioned. I'll start off with saying that this is my personal perspective as a trans person who lives as my biological sex for multiple personal reasons, even though I wish dearly I could be the opposite. (Doesn't stop me from acting how I want online tho~) As far as I remember there's never a point where Yamato is asked outright if *Yamato* thinks of "her"self as a man, or if it's just Yamato who tries to be Oden living as a man for that specific purpose and ONLY that purpose. You can see yourself one way while expressing something else for any number of reasons, and the way Yamato speaks of it only ever directly puts it in the context of "being Oden", not whether they actually prefer one way or the other personally. Based on presentation I'm inclined to believe gender just doesn't actually hold weight for them, as they present as very obviously female. As for people hating Oda and ignoring things he says on it, or attacking others for their own views, I think a lot of the arguing stems from only having that black and white perspective of "well are you or aren't you", when it can be both at the same time. Yamato can be comfortable as a woman while also taking on the (heh) "man"tle of being Oden Frankly, the arguments over this case is a big reason why I don't like the outspoken part of the trans community even as a trans person In their bid to accept everything they don't want to look at the potential nuances of many cases Not that the outspoken antis are any better. Too busy NOT accepting things, they are Tldr: Yamato can be a man or woman as they please, but fuck ME I want them tiddies in my hands

We're not anti-trans, most of us acknowledge characters like Kiku for who she is, and love Ivankov. This is an Ideologues vs. Author situation, and we go with Oda's canon. Japan has different perception and language when it comes to LGBT characters and we should not force our western views onto Japan.

Pneumatic

Y'know what my real question is now that this episode has hit Patreon and YouTube? I wonder how many more patrons have joined *specifically* to tout the same old anti-trans rhetoric theyve been harping for the last... Damn has it been four years already? That's wild.

Koirby

It might not be the proper term for it, but based on Yamato's personnality, if they are the "opposite of a ladyboy", then I could totally see them as a lordgirl :P

Kaz

What's nice and isn't immediately obvious in the subtitles is that, from that point on, Luffy refers to Yamato as Yamabro.

Smiling_Jack

How do people not realize that Yamato isn't trying to be a male version of herself. She's trying to embody Oden specifically. Not everything and everyone is trans. Kiku is, Yamato is not. Stop imposing headcanon over canon.

Xavier

Imagine imposing your own headcanon over the creator's authorial intent

Xavier

MFs in the comments really will see a person refer to themselves as a man, be referred to everyone else as a man, and even refuse to use women-only facilities and then still use she/her pronouns when talking about them lmao "yea but the vivra card say-" I don't care. If a dude says that he's a dude, you refer to him as a dude as well. Doesn't matter if you think that his reasons for doing so are weird or whatever.

Alex

I've read the manga and seen the anime and I still am not too sure how to refer to Yamato. Like Alicia said, it's a bit different in Asia regarding it. Is Yamato trans? Who knows, they use masculine language, or what's considered masculine but we see that often in anime for tomboys to refer to themselves so that's not quite a good indicator. Kaido calls them son but the show also says daughter, so that doesn't tell us much either. Do I say he, she, or just stick with they? I don't know and it's a sensitive topic that saw western Twitter mafia trying to go after Oda (he put out a OP cover with all the girls and Yamato was there in a bikini. Apparently some hated that). I'm cool with whatever Yamato wants to be, it's just vague. Yamato says they want to be Oden, or that they became Oden. That's why they refer to themselves as a man. Either way Yamato is still one of my favorite characters in One Piece. They are just so god damned cool.

Wil DeYoung

No matter how bad Kaido is he will not misgender his child. Which is honestly really funny. of all the lines he wont cross

Cole Savoie

Ooh six episodes can't wait

Alexander deLongchamps

Oh boy, looking at all of the comments here comes all of the debates. I will throw my $0.02 in there I have absolutely no problem with Yamato being whatever they want to be, the biggest issue is when people forget that this is an anime! And they try to relate everything with all of this gender stuff with real life.

Nicholas Walker

Regardless of which Pronoun is "Correct", Yamato is probably my favorite character from Wano. Also, I can now check off "Yamato Reveal" on my Alivia One Piece Moments Reactions Bingo Card. Looking forward to seeing how she reacts to some of the other crazy stuff later in the series.

BakaSama

HES hot

Lance Ivy

And that is very very valid. And who knows maybe the cover stories is telling how Yamato is on a similar journey to find out who and what they are :) <3

Jasmin Jakobsen

i look up to jolyne cujoh from jojo's much the same way yamato looks up to oden, but am non-binary/genderfluid/non-conforming & dont claim to be her (jolyne). but this admiration just seems similar where it does come to a head where i do feel my gender coming into question more than usual. still seeking out my true self either way im headed. still got my own thingss goin' - they are not a sole part of my identity, but these flippin manga have impacted me just that much in life.
