We learned during the Impel Down arc that Shanks had clashed with Kaido in the New World, meaning Kaido had tried to intercept Whitebeard on his route to Marineford BEFORE he could cross the Red Line via Fishman Island. Given the distance both Whitebeard and then Shanks afterwards had to travel to make it to Marineford from the New World, it makes sense that Kaido could make it back to Wano before the War ended as he himself probably didn't travel that far from his own territory before Shanks got in his way.

The only thing that it implies is somewhere along the way to MarineFord Kaido was interrupted by Shanks who then continued his journey to MarineFord. The time window they had between the announcement of the execution and it taking place was small so if Kaido got interrupted once he most likely wouldn't have made it on time so he decided to retreat back to Wano

Timeline wise, it is weird, and the characters in the show also thought that. It's not a writing flaw, it's something to do with shanks and his crew.

Yamato is referred to as "Son" by Kaido because in some asian cultures parents do refer to their daughters as son, and one of these reasons is because of the fact Yamato is his Heir so he would always refer to Yamato in this way. Yamato has shown no desire to be male just to be Oden and another indication of this is that in all the special spreads Oda has made, Yamato is always with the girls and that shows Oda's intent. Also Oda does show Trans-representation with Kikunojo who he also puts with the girls as well so if Yamato did identify as male he would have no problem putting him there but it is clear Yamato identifies as Oden and that's it
