2024-03-09 23:09:36 +0000 UTCI didn't mind the extra Davy Back stuff too much, always a fan of more Straw Hat shenanigans. The unfortunate part of it is that some of the lines and dialogue make somewhat less sense than they would have in the original manga. Nami's line about taking the boss and the Foxy Pirates getting mad is a good example. There were only three games in the original manga: the race, the ball match, and a third event that will be the last one we see in this arc. It was a match between Luffy and Foxy, so the Straw Hats would have won by default, which led to the Foxy Pirates booing Nami before she shut them up.

It was around this time a lot of filler was produced to try and make some room for the anime. It worked for a bit, up until halfway through the next arc where they had to pause and insert several episodes of filler in the middle.

Originally, there were supposed to be only 3 games and, obviously, Luffy chose to get Chopper back in the second game (Shelly wasn't even captured to begin with). Nami suggestion would've also granted them a victory by default, not just "better chances", for the third match. The rest of the jokes go the same, though.

I know a lot of people either dislike it or are apathetic about it, but I just think it is a lot of fun. Of course it likely helps that I read it after it had been completed. I can imagine it was a different experience reading through/watching it on a week to week basis.
