A lot of people call this the worst canon arc, but I think that's really more a reflection of just how good *every* arc in One Piece is than an indictment of this one. Also, rewatching this with hindsight, I feel like it's actually quite good foreshadowing for the stakes and themes of Water 7 (keeping that statement as vague as possible to avoid spoilers).

The worst change in this arc for me is the conclusion of the Davy Back Fight – and I have not the slightest idea why it was made because it even didn't help with any filler: In the anime we now have 497 people that were part of the straw hats even for a brief moment. In the manga they can simply choose between three shipwrights (so a highly needed profession) and they won't take them even for a second (ok, the obvious exception is Sanji because one of them is a beautiful female). This is very important because it shows that being part of the straw hats even for a short term doesn't have anything to do with your talents and your profession and that the theme of the straw hats really is "heart over reason". The anime goes against this message. I really think that there was much trouble behind the scenes after this arc aired because we got a way more strict separation between canon and filler after it.

It can be fun in the anime but it's really really bad as an adaptation. There are even people that didn't wanted to watch the series it anymore because they couldn't believe some of Luffy's decisions here – especially leaving Chopper in the hands of an enemy which never happened in the manga. The anime should have done the real events of the manga first and than used their own ideas for a nice filler Davy Back Fight after it and there wouldn't have been likely any complaints.

The anime version has nothing to do with canon for me because it ignores next to all of the important things in the manga arc (or does them in a way they don't work anymore) while having simple fun.

3 of the events of the davy back fight were canon. The barrel race, The Groggy Ring Game, and Afro Luffy vs. Foxy. it was initially only one Davy back fight with those 3 events. The roller derby, dodgeball, and red light green light were filler.

My general impression is that Oda just have an incredibly deep and undying love for Afros. Mainly based on his work and bits I remember from the SBS. But I have always had a fondness for Foxy. Mostly because he is an absolute idiot with confidence issues, and the gags involving him always gets me. He is one of those trickster characters who plan for everything. But rather than doing it tactically and intelligently, he just throws every stupid idea he has at you, and hopes some of them do some damage.
