The Apothecary Diaries 1x23

Comments

Why would people be so stupid as to ruin your product like that, PLOT TWISTS ARE THE KEY TO REACTIONS to spoil one is absurd... what stupid people

Talon Karrde

Curious what makes you think it was him trying to kill Jinshi.

Okoga

The sad backstory doesn't really excuse the numerous murders he set up and his attempt at killing Jingshi. "Oh, he's really a good person for trying to kill this man who genuinely cares about Maomao because he studied abroad for 3 years and the courtesan he knocked up lost 2 fingers, so him killing people completely unrelated to his fuck up is totally justified." I think the mangaka had a stroke when writing the obvious villain as a sympathetic villain. You need to provide something to make the audience say "fair" to their crimes and killings, not show that he is just big mad over consequences for his actions. Dude comes off as a redditor who finally had a comeuppance after decades of mommy and daddy letting them get away with everything.

Kap

the first time i watched this series through i never realized just who lukan's uncle was, im glad i caught it this time

Ivaldi

Such a shame it was spoiled... here i was hoping im gonna see some great shock T-T

Noel

fecken sucks about the spoil, low key was avoiding finishing this cuz i didn't know how bad the spoiling was, but your commentary and perspective really make watching this extra awsome

Winter Turnip

The spoiling is so obnoxious...

Haven't read the novels yet but there is also the fact that he previously told us he never could beat her at Go but he never lost at chess (well xianqi). So here you have him remarking that a terrible thought crossed his mind when making the bet but then he goes and chooses Go, which she always wins, so in a way choosing that she will win the bet.

Ryuuji Gremory

I bet he recognized Meimei from her boobs.

Rat#394

Someone correct me if this was debunked but I believe with the wording in the Light novel/manga the topic of wanting to play go vs chess thing had a double meaning of Go = I want a girl and chess = wanting a boy though Laken was naturally unaware as he did not realize the intent. Unfortunately a translation detail that is nearly impossible to well, translate.

Kavi#404

It was obvious to me when they revealed he was extremely neurodivergent. Those types of people are notorious for being socially awkward to the point that their behaviors are often misconstrued as being malicious. Their asocial interactions combined with their high intelligence often make them seem like they're plotting something nefarious, when in reality they're simply struggling with basic interpersonal relationships. I had a couple of autistic friends in high school like that, and I often played mediator for them and my other acquaintances.

Speci

I AM SO ANGRY! I really wanted you to see this reveal unspoiled.

Miroslav Radev

You don't need a face to recognise Meimei. :9 I know he probably recognised her voice, but it is funnier to think that he recognised the cleavage. I love that we where told in an earlier episode that Meimei wasn't just popular for her looks, but for her wit and talents in games and singing. The very talents that Maomaos mother was renowned for. Meimei was taught very well.

Spacefrog

I think that we all thought he was drinking wine all those times

Hi, licensed psychometrician here (not practicing tho but I'm pretty familiar with the DSM-V - this is what we use to diagnose mental disorders). Prosopagnosia and sociopathy have no correlation, nor "lack of empathy" = sociopathy. There are also a lot of other disorders that have "lack of empathy" as a symptom but they can still feel remorse when they start to understand the gravity of their actions such as those who have ASD, bipolar disorder, borderline and others. As for Lakan, he isn't a sociopath. Is he weird and socially awkward? Yes. But he has no sociopathic tendencies whatsoever. Can we perceive him as being a sociopath without understanding his background? Sure. But given all his interactions so far, he doesn't seem to be one. And the intense guilt he feels over what happened to Fengxian, eliminates any chance of him being a sociopath altogether. Sociopaths never feel guilt or remorse, like ever. All other symptoms can be absent but never this one. His manipulative nature is a part of his status and a desperate attempt to get involved with his daughter. None of them were meant to harm. He's never actually shown to lack empathy, either. He just doesn't have many meaningful relationships where he could probably learn or express empathy.

A small difference between the anime and the manga is how they talk about the cut finger. In the anime, they call it "a popular way to curse someone." In the manga, they say, "A Pinky Promise. Courtesans would cut off a finger, usually the little one, and give it to their lover as a symbol of their fidelity. I'd heard the charm had grown popular as of late."

Minibom22

I'm guessing the inability to see faces can be linked with *having sociopathic tendencies, as in lacking empathy for others. But I wonder if having the condition makes you more likely to develop sociopathic tendencies and/or if being a sociopath makes you more likely to develop this type of condition.

Minibom22

You are right, they are playing Xianqi here. It definitely is shougi in the LN though.

Aerowind

Nice synthesis at the end there. That's also one of the best advice I received from a mentor - Impact trumps intent.

Carbon

I am pretty sure what they are playing here is xiangqi and not shogi. Xiangqi and shogi are both in the family of chess, just Chinese and Japanese respectively. Correct me if I am wrong.

I am so sorry people are jerks and felt the need to spoil this episode. Unfortunately people seemed to be doing this to a lot of reactors to this show. I don’t get it. I totally understand being excited but why would you want to ruin a rectors first reaction. Why wouldn’t you let them get there on their own? Why are you watching a reactor if you don’t actually want them to react to the show? This show has such a beautiful way of slowly peeling back the layers as you get new information. At the same time it is also good at throwing in twists and turns. You may think you have it all figured out and then the show goes no, actually, you are totally wrong. I love that it all goes back to Luomen telling Maomao that she needs to collect facts and information before coming to a conclusion. Lakan’s story is a perfect example of that because your gut tells you that he’s bad and evil (because like you said we are all trained to that trope of evil music, monocle, sly guy must be bad) but as you start getting more information it becomes clear that maybe he isn’t so bad after all. I also agree that like you said intention matters. This show has been so good at not painting black and white lines of what is good and what is evil. People do bad things but not always with an evil or bad intent. There is also clearly something bigger going on that we have only scratched the surface of and I cannot wait to see more of this show. (I have not read the manga, yet, so I have no idea what is coming up.) Anyways, it is so infuriating seeing people spoil shows. I have seen so many different people spoil this show in so many different ways. it’s a damn mystery show. Let people figure things out on their own. I know it can be frustrating if you have it figured out already but I promise, like others have said, it is so much more rewarding to see someone figure it out on their own than it is to give them all the answers. I am so sorry for how long this post got. I am sure no one will read it. I promise there are no spoilers. It is just me ranting and raving about how much I love this show and hate people that spoil it.

Ashley

They're playing shougi (Edit: actually xianqi) and not chess. They're kind of similar games to the point where localizers typically just say it's chess because it's more recognizable. The skills absolutely do not transfer over though. Shougi makes my head hurt.

Aerowind

As someone who have read the manga, I must admit that I am a bit bitter about having sat silent for all of this time, waiting to see Alicias reaction to the story going in-depth with Lakan, only for it to be spoiled by a bunch of anime watchers as soon as the episode got out. Because I somewhat regularly find myself writing up comments on her reactions talking about things, only to deleting them because I aren´t certain that they are spoiler free enough. Especially on the One Piece ones. And I will say, that one of the things I appreciate about Alicia as a reactor, is that she is more often than not able/willing to change her mind about characters based on new information and generally have a pretty good read on them in the first place. Which just makes it feel especially pointless to spoil stuff like that. I generally find that there are two reasons people spoil stuff (apart from just being an asshole). First is because of sheer enthusiasm. They can´t contain it, or let it slip out. The second is because they want to feel smarter than others. And this very much feels like the latter.

Ebofa

It took me 48 hours for me to adjust to the whiplash of the plot twist of him not being the worst. And I would've loved to see Alicia's honestly surprised reaction to it. I will forever hate the spoilers who spoiled.

Viridi Harmonia

My personal plot twist was learning that Lakan's uncle was Maomao's adoptive father. NGL, while Maomao was very smart with her little game, the first "confrontation" with her dad felt a bit underwhelming. Not disappointed, though. Also, we can confidently say that the guard who messed up Maomao's face is peacefully sleeping in the dirt somewhere... XD

leviathan_13

Your anger was and is justified, Alicia. 7:th level of Dantes hell is reserved for traitors. People who spoil story on your channel, in Patreon no less, are found in deepest level among them for breaking your trust.

Kampela

i don't know why people feel like defending characters before the anime develops. It's so satisfying to watch it unfold, but no, they have to be smartasses.

ElevenZero

A cool detail you may not have remembered, Lakan said before to Jinshi he cannot beat Fengxian in Go, which they reinforced here by having Fengxian thrash him in Go. When asked to choose between the two boards for their wager, Lakan chose the Go board, his weaker game.

Sir Nil

Omg i am so glad you are watching it to the end. Thx so much Alicia. I really hope something like this never happens again
