The Apothecary Diaries 1x24

finale!

Comments

AFAIK you can cut all the way until the fingernail & a finger can grow back w/ enough time, but if you go past that you're cooked, because the genetic sequence for regenerating the cells is stored at the fingernail bit (well technically in the flesh underneath it, but that's generally the location at any rate) just before it turns into flesh. It's how the fingers know how to properly regenerate fingernails even if you get your nails yeeted a la torture etc, because it knows how the area after the fingernail is supposed to be like.

Maybe she could have, but that is certainly not an expected eventual result. The discovery of penicillin was something of a miraculous fluke. It is not something you would expect anyone of any amount of intelligence to discover just because they get into studying fungi. As evidenced by the fact that a good number of people just as intelligent as her studied and experimented with fungi for thousands of years prior to Alexander Fleming, and even he almost threw out the petri dish leading to the discovery thinking it was ruined. It's also worth pointing out that even penicillin would not save her mother at this point. Her brain is essentially melting, even if you got rid of the disease, the critical damage could not possibly be reversed even today.

Jason Ramey

kinda crazy to think if only maomao got into experimenting with fungus shed eventually have figured out penicillian which can cure syphillis even at late stages

Charlie baker

also maomao clearly prides herself on hard work which is part of why she finds lakan distasteful more then anything in their history, its why she clearly starts to become more fond of jinshi when he shows himself to be hardworking and diligent not just a pretty face putting on airs

Charlie baker

Still don't feel a shred of empathy for the man regardless, his "condition" changes nothing

Layna Ladywood

this show is fabulous. "let me just grab my cat" had me wheezen

Winter Turnip

With all the mentions of wanting to "crack Lakan's monacle", I love the detail that after he falls over the rail and then gets up to keep running, you can hear a crunch of glass... they really did end up breaking his monacle!

Joy the Black Dragon

Finished my three day binge lol, I seriously can not express just how happy this anime made me and how excited I was every time I sat down to watch the next few episodes. This show is a masterpiece and I absolutely fucking love it

NekoSoophie!

Just binged this show over the past two days and I must say I really enjoyed it. Unfortuantely, I too was partially spoiled alongside Alicia, since I saw the ban note, so I had somewhat of an idea going in, but it was still a joyful ride to the end. Can't wait for the next season to air. And as always, thx Alicia for the fun time. I may not always 100% agree with all of your takes (and I still find your habit of talking shit about others for no reason more annyoing than endearing), but I still undoubtedly enjoy watching your content. Keep up the good work 😄.

So, this is simply my understanding from watching up till now, with no further knowledge, so I might be wrong. It's acutally not 100% certain what Maomao thinks about Jinshi. She at first assumed he was an eunuch, simply because they (and the imperial family) are the only ones allowed inside the rear palace. So, given that Jinshi regularly visits and oversees the rear place, he has to be either an eunuch or part of the imperial family. Given that no one at the rear palace seems to treat Jinshi like royalty, there's no reason to assume he's part of the imperial family, so he can only be an eunuch, so that's what Maomao thinks he is. Although, it's impled Maomao is starting to have doubts, ever since saving Jinshi from being killed, because why would they let a simple eunuch lead such an important ceremony, but actively chooses not to think about it, since it would only make her life more complicated. And as for Jinshi himself, I think you're partially right, but it was my understanding that he's actually the son of courtesan Ah Duo and the current emperor, thus making Jinshi the eldest son of the current emperor and the rightful crown prince of the empire. Ah Duo may have been officially the concubine of the current emperor's father, but was always much closer to the current emperor himself. But yes, Ah Duo was indeed giving birth at the same time the emperor's younger brother was born, resulting in her infertility due to them prioritizing the other kids safety, and later switched Jinshi with the emperor's younger brother to keep Jinshi safe. Thus Jinshi, the emperor's biological son, was raised as the emperor's younger brother, while the actual younger brother of the emperor died, due to the former head lady in waiting unknowingly feeding him honey, which he couldn't yet digest at that age. Or at least that's my understanding of things thus far into the story. Again, I might have misunderstood things, but I'm 99,9% sure that that is what was implied.

JHow

OK since this is the season finale I can ask questions to make sure I understand things. We know jinshi is not a eunuch. But maomao still thinks he is? We know jinshi lies about his age, but am i right that it implied he was the child born on the same night as the current emperor? That the mother was the concubine who was forced to leave the rear palace as she could not have kids after said birth? If that is correct, doesn't that make jinshi the half brother of the current emperor, and he just lives his lie in secret to protect the emperor from a power usurping plot, if say jinshi was born a few min earlier than the emperor? That living in secret until the emperor has a male heir also prevents jinshi from being the heir? Did I make that all up or did I understand the inferences correctly?

I just finished watching your reaction to this anime. It’s so good. Based on what you mentioned in the last bit there, I think you’d like Yona of the Dawn if you haven’t seen it yet. Highly recommend.

Aseel Bukhari 🇸🇦🇵🇸

When I watched the OP with the first episode, I thought to myself, "the dancing seems out of character for her" and went on about my business. NOW IT MAKES SENSE. Well played.

I am so glad I held off on reading the LN series until S1 completed (I've had vol 1 in my Kindle library for months now). I'm normally the kind of guy who, when a new anime series piques my interest, I dive into the LN series immediately - but I didn't do that for this, Frieren, or Solo Leveling. And I'm really happy about that. I won't be anime only when S2 airs in 2025, but I'm really glad I made it this long.

jdoggivjc

I don't think the anime made this clear. Laumen, Maumau's Pa, is Lakan's uncle, so her Pa is her biological granduncle. Also, you are right about the pinky. Maumau has a clearly visible wrinkle on her pinky nail in the manga.

Minibom22

I can't wait for season 2 great reactions

Tykeha Williams

But all the other poison testers we saw wore the official outfit of their lady. You can argue that she was just doing her poison testin "on commission" in the latter half of the season, but in the first episode, she was officially hired as lady in waiting (or whatever they are called) in the jade pavilion. It was weird that she kept wearing her green outfit then at the very least and, indeed, she wore the pink dress during the tea party with all the other concubines. We could argue then that they ask her to wear the official outfit only during formal occasions, but when she did a poison test in front of the emperor himself (ep. 4), she still wore the green one. It's a bit inconsistent IMHO... I think the animators just prefer her in the green dress rather than there being an in-world reason.

leviathan_13

Maomao is actually mostly just around to taste-test and do other random shit on her free time. Except for mandatory public engagements, she doesn't need to dress up. Her outfit is her apothecary outfit so it could be both plot and design. It would be weird for her to go around solving mysteries in Gyokyou's branding.

Carbon

Umm…that is not the ox bezoar at the end. It is the cordyceps (parasite fungus) that Jinshi gifted to her when he bought out her contract at the Verdigris House. He still hasn’t given her the bezoar. This episode was an emotional rollercoaster and I loved every second of it. I am going to miss having new episodes of this show but season 2 will be here before we know it I am so happy we are getting another season. I am also so glad that I found your reactions to this show. It has been so much fun watching this and your reactions to A Sign of Affection. This season really has been good to us.

Ashley

Now you've got to go back and watch the anime again, because Maomao is constantly looking at her little finger all throughout the anime.

Aerowind

As someone who have been reading the manga version of this anime from when the first scanlation of it came out, I was actually pretty surprised that it got an anime, and even more surprised by how popular it got. Because while I think it is a pretty great, a romance/mystery show about an apothecary in old "Not-China" felt like a rather niche concept. But what a pleasant surprise it has been and I am glad it got such a positive reception. But damn, that scene of Lakan buying out her mother was perfect. His desperate run to her and him just starting weeping completely, was wonderfully directed.

Ebofa

I've heard about him buying back Maomao's mom, but seeing it in action is much more heartbreaking...

Kaz

If this is the finale. Then there must be more seasons coming. Something to look forward to. =) Edit: Here is to me, to learn to watch the entire episode before commenting. You confirmed a second season. Also, thank you for letting us join you on the journey that is this anime. It has been a pleasure. And here is to the next season too, and that you will enjoy it just as much. =)

Empo

Thank you for the Journey. Thank you to to studio and Manga creator. Special thank to music people, that hightened the experience.

Ivan

Maomao is missing part of one fingertip. They showed it previously, how one of her little fingers has a weirdly narrow end.

Anzac-A1

I seriously thought Maomao was going to ask if he had a d**k.

Kazukima

I agree with Meimei, why the convoluted scheme for being bought off by Lakan? At least ask first... but I guess it fits her personality. Another detail that always puzzled me is why Maomao never changed her outfit. Shouldn't she at least have worn the Jade pavilion dress when she worked there? I don't understand if there is a plot reason or if it just a design choice.

leviathan_13

When he pullt the finger out of the bag there was the finger and a little piece falling out. I think the actuall finger was from the mom and the little piece was maomaos fingertip. at least thats how i understand it

Uwe

Season 2 better not have a single spoiler or i will hunt you down with a burning butt plug xD Thx for the amazing journey Alicia <3

Jasmin Jakobsen

I'm so glad you kept up with the anime! The Lakan scene never fails to make me teary eyed, and I was so glad to see it animated!

Sir Nil

Lakan: A hundred thousand is too much for a courtesan. Also Lakan: Two hundred thousand, and more than double the time feasting, first offer. I know this might be out of hand, but the Granny probably could've haggled more out of him lol.
