Straw Hat Episode 286+287

reuploaded due to upload error! :3 here it is now though!

Comments

Yeah didn't know I could do that when I made the post but search has been a real help

glumslum

Best method i've found is just search for episode numbers.

Jeremy Hunt

Nah

Justin Moore

Not gonna Lie this particular moment made to realize the ship between Nami and Sanji

Donald Lee Pack

This is the ark that causes Sanji to lose a LOT of points of respect... eventually he earns them back... but it was pretty rough.

Pcdruid

Him swearing never to hit women due to his childhood trauma and keeping that principle even in do-or-die situations instead of it just being a throwaway trait thats only brought up when its convinient is exactly what makes him a great character, saying that veers towards sexism is a crazy ass take

Lewd Angel

and patreon is still 13 episodes ahead of youtube. I miss hxh and op too, but she isn't unreasonable for prioritizing other shows

Addeand

Crazy it's been a week and no one piece😢

Ben Carmichael

Man, everybody getting fingered in this arc.

Ham

Sogeking is so overpowered that they had to give him the handicap of lugging around Zoro.

Minibom22

you're going to need a 4th then

It's The Quenchiest!

As someone on his third rewatch don’t think Zeff ever taught him that.

unknown organism

love watching her react to this arc. really hope she starts sorting the posts into its seasons tho 500+ post are going to be fun to sort through

glumslum

Alicia forgot option #3: *Gestures at screen* It's Luffy.

HappyDoodads

I would even argue a flaw has to be a core part of their character. It just sucks that Sanji's quite easily and often veers more towards sexism and doesn't get better (imo) when you could have done something interesting with like, him refusing to use his hands during battle and that putting him at a disadvantage. *shrug*

Elizabeth McLaughlin

As Nami puts it: in this situation, it's not simping, it's chivalry. Like a Loyal Good Paladin who would heal their enemy before a fight to give them a "fair chance".

Kaz

A flaw can still be a core part of a character: that's how you make good character, you give them flaws. Luffy's a dumbass, Zoro gets lost miserably, Nami's greedy, Usopp's a coward, Chopper's a baby (yes, it can be a flaw when you're in danger and don't have the maturity to take proper action), and Robin is... well, shady. Some of these flaws can be overcome, others will stay forever or even be exacerbated, but no matter what, they are part of the character and must be accepted as such.

Kaz

It's not a flaw in not fighting women it's a core part of him

Icy

Awesome, thanks! I thought so, and then the spell checker was yelling at me so I started second guessing myself lol

Elizabeth McLaughlin

It’s funny you said that because a ton of people hated when he decided to do so in a later arc. I feel that Sanji get way too overhated by the community.

Shaquille Som

yep that is indeed a word and spelt correctly too :the quality or state of being theatrical.

jdogus

He does get better... eventually.

Pcdruid

I love Kumadori because of his theatricalness (is that a word?), even though I'm not super familiar with Kabuki theater so I probably don't get half of the aspects of his character. And yeah, Sanji as a character has some of the highest highs and lowest lows in my opinion. And unfortunately all his lows are tied to over-excessive simping instead of an interesting character flaw. It really detracts from his character and makes him my least favorite of the Strawhats at this point.

Elizabeth McLaughlin

It was the opposite for me, I was really annoyed by it but that moment made me realize how much that means for him and that even if his simping is annoying, his refusal to hit women show his more noble side.

Thaïsgrün

it was zeff who instilled the idea of never hitting a woman in sanji, when they first started restaurant sanji had no problem with hitting women

LordWhitebeard

Regarding the topic of what constitutes a "baby", if someone got a mortgage and started doing taxes and stuff at 22, does that mean they are premature?

Grandmasta

"The furry community is really eating this arc" Kids remember this, it will be part of the test

Spiegelhirsch

46:00 What I find funny and ironic is that Paulie had a literal target on his chest with a bullseye on his diaphragm and no one aimed there. One shot there would either kill him or cripple his breathing for life.

Trevor Appel

Man she missed a great line from Kaku where he says I love giraffes

NandoTNT

I think if Kaku didn't let it get to him, he could actually make it work and not seem so ridiculous. I mean, look at the goofy stuff Luffy has done so far, or Buggy for that matter. Both of them look really strange and hilarious, but they don't give a damn!

Shrapnel

sanji just gets a little distracted

Draconic

Minecraft giraffe

Matt Forsythe

Also, I love the aspect of the crew tagging in for each other to do things the other cannot. It's been a recurring thing since Alabasta - "You do what you can do and I'll do what you can't." as Sanji said to Usopp. Sometimes even the strongest players on the field have things they can't do (or bring themselves to do) and in this case, Sanji can't fight a woman - so it's left to the crew to fill that gap. Doesn't mean he's useless - he could probably take down most of the other members of CP9 - just means that in this instance he's going to need someone to step in for him and frankly, that's great writing. No, but seriously, a huge aspect of the power scaling (or lack there-of) in One Piece is that even though you may be super powerful, there may be someone else who can get past your abilities (in various ways) and beat you. We've seen this with Luffy vs Enel and water vs Crocodile. In this case Sanji vs woman is another strong fighter is bad against a specific situation. Pit him against Kumadori, Jabra, Kaku, Chapapa and such, and Sanji would likely come out on top, but against Kalifa he just can't. And that's perfectly fine because that's endemic in the world that there's always going to be a way to beat someone no matter how powerful. (And this is why I hate power scalers in OP because they're off their nut and completely ignore these aspects of the story.)

Liberty

Especially as WITHOUT this aspect to him he'd be too perfect a character. Man needed something to make him just as goofy as the crew. Sadly this is what we got, but outside of these instances of overdoing his simping, he's an incredible character. Like, I don't even hate this part of him, tbh - the parts of him are when he gets more pervy are more bothersome tbh. Standing up for your beliefs, though, and standing by them even if it means your own death? I can jive with that. He just needs to find a way to do so without falling into the pitfall of being useless to the team - even if that means leaving fights against women to other members of the crew.

Liberty

I really do appreciate that when Nami is finished admonishing Sanji (rightfully so), she does give him a little in that "I think a little more of your chivalry then I did before." There's a certain respect to be given to someone who adheres to their values to such a degree rather than it just being for show, and she realizes that. It's nice :) I think it speaks well to their relationship.

Koirby

Sanji used to be my favorite character but this arc started to make me hate him. Entering simp mode when everyone else is risking their lives to save Robin doesn't exactly work as comic relief

Beelz

Kaku is my favorite member of CP9 and il die on this hill 😂

Extra Crispy

i love how much you enjoy kumadori, hes my favourite member of cp9

KuroOberon

it's just as bad in the manga. He started as a gentleman and a guy obsessed with women but someone who is actively and continuously aggravating a life or death situation because of his simping is not a character that is easy to like

Beelz

It ain’t as bad in the manga if I’m being honest.

Shaquille Som

Aye, it ain’t Sanji’s fault being raise with a bunch of Oldheads in a restaurant that beat that mentality to him. Don’t get me wrong there’s time whether it’s the Toei filler or the manga where they go Overboard with the gag but saying I don’t understand why people like him as a character is crazy.

Shaquille Som

Mashiro

Yeah no Sanji’s simping gets to be downright frustrating at times

D-Money

Man, I was hoping she would see it, oh well.

Kayden

yes burst that bubble lol

nick bunston

I mean she's not wrong it looks like those old inflatable ones you saw in movies

Fenronin (Dorian Dubourg)

I have never been so impressed by Alicia’s face tracking as when she mocked Kumadori

Ranginald Vagel

"She turned him into a sex doll!" Girl, I fuckin' CHOKED. XDDD

Liberty

In our German dub, Kaku's name was changed to Ecki. which, like the Japanese word, is derived from the German word "Eckig". Eckig = square/angular

Chamoun101

Kaku desperately trying to make his devil fruit look cool will always be funny to me. I have always remembered the clusterfuck that was their fight, but I had actually forgotten just how ridiculous most of CP9 were. Like, had completely forgotten all about Kumadori and Fukuro.

Ebofa

A few things of note and something to keep in mind. In Japanese, kaku means 'angle' hence why he's so square and why his giraffe form is square. Another thing is in japanese, Kaku ends all his sentences with -ja, which is commonly used by old men. I'm sure you've been enlightened by this, but yes, Kumadori is based heavily on Asian theater, specifically Kabuki theater, Oda is a massive lover of kabuki and Kumadori is basically all Kabuki. Also a fun note, and this is not a spoiler, it's never revealed in the story but in a Q&A section in the volume releases. Kumadori's mother is actually alive and perfectly fine, and she is also an assassin. He's just being very dramatic.

MaskedRider

Alicia, you missed a rather fun bit in the start of 287.

ChaosSepher

Kaku: "I'm the best swordsman in CP9." Zoro: "That is just adorable."

Liesmith

Chimney: *Perception Roll* *Secret Button*

ChaosSepher

Remember no matter what Sanji will never attack a woman, and I love him keeping his principles

Icy

Why would Kaku lie about the number key he has? It was his suggestion to unlock their cuffs if he had the right one.

ChaosSepher

Alicia Clutch!

Code Kagari

A quick translation for Alicia: the ‘Soge’ in ‘Sogeking’ means Sniper in japanese. In other words Uso… I mean, Sogeking’s name in english is actually the Sniper King.

OhorgokonatKaiRha

Job-bruh: AH-HAHA, AH-HAHA, AH-HAHA IT'SAGIRAAAFFE! Job-bruh is a Mogura (mole), bruh

Yagi di Hoshi

I've been curious about one thing: it will be a while before you reach the episode but do you plan on watching the Toriko/One Piece Collab episodes?

Baron Banana Mustacio

Yaaaaaay! Thank you Alicia! Always happy when I see the notification of a new Straw Hat reaction on my phone's e-mail notification!~ Hope you got some rest though!

Maumao

I was wondering during what happened, time to watch it again

Felix Real

Yay :)

Fromsoftenjoyer

Kaku's on his copium arc.
