She'd immediately compare Albedo to Darkness.

an overlord reaction whould be awesome.

As someone who also hates all the typical Isekai tropes (overpowered protagonist with a boring personality and a harem of oversexualized followers/slaves that are only there for fanservice) I would recommend watching "Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash", as it's very good at avoiding those tropes. The basic premise is that a group of people gets isekaid with no memory of their former lives or the world that they come from. They must now work together in their struggle (key word) to survive in this new and hostile world.

"What the fuck is this anime?" she says to peak. I'd love for Alicia to do reacts to Overlord. An Albedo outfit would look great on her.

Kap

Oh that’s REALLY important to know!!! I might give the source material / LNs a preview then if the anime actually did them injustice. Thanks a ton!

Yeah, I'mma join ppl in reminding everyone that in an early episode it was EXPLICITLY said that Shuro was getting ready to PROPOSE to Falin. Laios was shocked because he had NO IDEA (unsurprising ^^'), while it was obvious to everyone else. The only thing ambiguous about it, that's come up in this reaction, is how FALIN felt about any of it. Like, were they a couple? (As Alicia assumed at one point) Was Falin as oblivious as Laios? Did she know but not feel the same way? Did SHURO ever let her know how he felt? Or is this a more classic Medieval setting where proposing before dating is "normal"? THAT's what we don't know.

DaniDeFig

Shuro's crush was explicitly mentioned in an earlier episode. That's so crazy audacious on the YT commenter's part.

28:05 You can upset with her, but remember, while she wasn't given any permission by Shuro to disclose the information, he also neglected to give any order to NOT do so or even to NOT listen in on the conversation in the first place. Which means she must now answer truthfully when the second-in-command orders to answer the question, "What happened?" Failing to do so in a samurai-like structure has the potential to lead to punishment most severe, especially if you're broadly viewed as "lesser" whether that be because you are a girl-cat ninja or half-white and raised by the Tengu like Keanu Reeves' character in 47 Ronin.

and there are also a lot of cases of things being explained weirdly by characters in the anime even though in the novel it was just explained in the narration since the characters have no reason to tell each others what they already know. And then there's how rushed the anime adaptation is, skipping a lot of things.

Sancturillore -- Γ‰lie Simard-Wallot

One of the biggest differences is that a lot of the novels are written from the perspective of people of the new fantasy world the mc found himself in. Then, a lot of parts are still from the pov of the mc, but there are also several parts from the pov if the npcs, and it gives them a lot of depth that is absent in the anime.

Sancturillore -- Γ‰lie Simard-Wallot

As someone who likes Overlord despite its flaws, I mostly agree with you. There is one thing however that you got very wrong. The Overlord anime adaptation isn't an upgrade, it's a huge downgrade. The anime is in my opinion just average, and below average in some of its worst adapted parts. The novels on the other hand are actually quite well written.

Sancturillore -- Γ‰lie Simard-Wallot

oh yea, no, he is absolutely shady. i love that for him heh. it's more that i thought the remarks really illustrated how different the experience is for us as viewers than it is to the characters (and tbh, i didnt mind not getting more of his thoughts, it was really laios' that i was bummed about cause him trying so hard to censor himself is a lovely moment of introspection)

Kamipixel

He DOES seem shady though, and felt so in the source material too-- just not so clearly and expertly! Frankly I'm continually blown away by how much MORE characterization Studio Trigger's incredible adaptation is managing to stuff into the subtlety of every single scene of Dungeon Meshi, when the manga it was adapting was ALREADY so charming and stuffed to the gills with amazing characterization that I'd NEVER expected the Anime would top it so well. Instead of narrating Kabru's more detailed thoughts to us more often, or dropping oblique hints to them more frequently in dialogue, Alicia points out how every single LOOK this character is giving every other character and their reactions to him are giving us SO MUCH DETAIL that trying to read his thoughts and motivations without having them spelled out is honestly two or three times more fascinating than it was in the source material, IMO. :D

Is Overlord *actually* that good, though? I tried to watch it and dropped off around mid-season-two, the Lizardman arc bored me to tears. Genuinely curious about your opinion though, or if you think it gets better and I need to give the rest a second chance, because I might be willing to try it again. From what I've watched so far, it feels like they TRY to spend plenty of time worldbuilding here and there, and the central premise of the overpowered Isekai protagonist being the "evil undead emperor" had some initial promise, but ultimately every other aspect of the show seemed almost enslaved to the core Overpowered-Isekai-Protagonist power fantasy (much like Reincarnated As A Slime) and a bunch of accompanying tropes that I personally find pretty tiring, just spread between the Custom NPCs that make up the protagonist's enormous Evil Guild instead of just the protagonist, each character of which seemed a tired trope themselves straight out of some sort of fanfiction because-- well, that's exactly WHAT THEY WERE, custom NPCs whose appearances and personalities were hand-tailored to the tastes of the protagonist's nerdy MMO guildmates from the pre-Isekai past. Ultimately, I couldn't find myself caring about almost ANY of the characters, which is a death sentence for a show so stuffed with characters and time taken characterizing them that one almost struggles to keep track of them all. And of course you have a well-done scene or two where the joke is "look at how this expert MMO player wins an MMO battle by playing it like an MMO", but quite frankly, many other Isekai works have pulled those tropes off better while mixing in far more interesting implications of transforming an MMO game-world into a real one and dealing with the honest philosophical and worldbuilding complications of that transformation. Even Log Horizon seemed twice as good at that as Overlord, and I have PLENTY of problems with some of the tropes leaned on by Log Horizon, too! To me, Overlord smacks of "poorly written light-novel story saved only marginally by the glow-up of an anime adaptation budget". Then again, I'm a very picky and VERY jaded person and know my tastes are really strict-- to me even SOLO LEVELING was intolerably tropey and only saved by its art and an extremely-high-budget anime glow-up. I've chewed through enough Isekai Light Novel writing to have a REALLY low tolerance for Light Novel writing that isn't cream-of-the-crop and really trope-defying, like the raw emotional gut-punches of Re: Zero's constant existentially-angsty twists (VERY well anime-rendered) or the frankly insanely detailed groundedness and political worldbuilding of Ascendance Of A Bookworm (whose Anime adaptation was disappointingly lazy but whose story severely defies many of its power-fantasy tropes by having EVERY action the protagonist takes with her outside knowledge at least *partially* bite her in the ass with huge political and worldbuilding consequences she never could have considered that she requires CONSTANT lecturing on by much more knowledgable characters and occasionally faces severe ramifactions for -- although, I'm admittedly highly biased because my addiction to technology-upgrade-focused alternate-universe stories makes me more tolerant). To me, Light Novels -- especially Isekai ones -- are so prolific, so commonly trashy, so filled with male-Japanese-teenager-appeal UST, and so INDISCRIMINATELY adapted after all the studios wanted to cash in on Sword Art Online's success, that it's been EXTREMELY difficult for me to find any that really held my interest whether in original-LN or anime-adaptation form. And some (I'm one of them) argue that Sword Art Online is one of the WORST ones! So... any advice for such a picky eater like me?

BlastYoBoots

i mean, didn't they say earlier that Shuro was into Fallin and then Laios replied that he hadn't noticed? i thought that it was pretty explicitly stated. Either way, thanks for the binge Alicia! Definitely helps get me through my work

29:55 Surprise Overlord advertisement :D

Kampela

im not sure why they decided to cut out most of laios' and kabru's thoughts during that little talk with shuro cause it does give a bit more insight on things. laios is actively keeping his story short to avoid accidentally saying something he shouldn't, but when kabru starts asking about how they got away, he lies, and kabru does instantly pick up on it (but also it's very funny to hear you say that kabru is so shady cause if you think about it, he's honestly kind of a model adventurer, and laios' party are the ones doing literally every illegal or taboo thing they could, heh)

Kamipixel

29:50 a very good one, called overlord. I'd recommend giving it a try, if you like villain protagonists and haven't gotten sick of isekai yet. another good one i'd recommend is yojo senki. that one also has a rather morally grey main character. but enough about other anime, back to the one at hand. i actually hadn't seen the epsidoe yet, and boy was I excited for this one in particular. finally the two groups have officially met each other and some spicy secrets have been shared. how will everyone react? find out next episode! also, not sure if excited or sad to see what happened to falin. poor girl definitely deserved better.
