the character with the most surprising development has to be helmeppo. Or helm-head as I call him. He really goes a long way from being a conceited daddys boy to an actual decent person. His development seems to mirror Koby. Naive and weak training with jerk and weak to both become stronger and better.

2024-04-27 23:40:33 +0000 UTCNot trying to be rude.... but Nami didn't want anyone from her Village to know about her Deal with Arlong, she suffered for years thinking that they hated her but that it's something she actively chosed to do... so the Villagers knowing of her scheme (in anime/manga) is not actually "horrible" as you describe, it's simply as JHow says it... they knew she didn't want anyone to find out so they were sparing her for having the additional pressure of them waiting for her to buy their freedom. You are also omitting the fact that Genzo and Nojiko not knowing of her scheme completely butchers their individual characters, and not even mentioning a different excuse as to why Nojiko has those tattoos in the first place was also not the best choice. Nami's character wasn't about "earning redemption"...... it was about her getting her dreams and freedom back as well as learning to accept help from others. And again... im not faulting the Staff of the LA for this, i know they had to change things for this format and for the amount of episodes they had. It's cool that the Live-action formula of this Arc worked so well for you... but i wouldn't call your take a "rebuttal" of what JHow stated.

2024-04-26 21:40:39 +0000 UTCThe way Oda wrote Coco village was more interesting and unique. The live action's version is definitely more generic, but there is one thing I like about it. Luffy believes in Nami despite all the evidence he shouldn't. He's not a naïve character who sees the best in everyone. He knows Alvida and Kuro are evil people, and the thought that Nami could be like them doesn't enter his mind for one second.

2024-04-26 14:43:00 +0000 UTCLuffy sticking around to here Nami's backstory kinda sucks, takes away a bit from the end scene since the most lovable thing about Luffy is that he doesn't need an explanation to choose to help a friend in obvious distress.

2024-04-26 06:30:13 +0000 UTCHonestly it just makes both the villagers and Nami look worse. The villagers knowing the stakes in the anime added depth to Nami by showing the grit of the people that raised her. Without that it just makes Nami look like an angsty kid turned angsty teen and her village just another typical village you find anywhere, nothing unique about either.

2024-04-25 22:57:59 +0000 UTCI don't. Nami has two parental figures and they cut one out so they had to retcon the tattoo that was supposed to represent them both. The hat scene is still effective but they removed a characterizing moment for Luffy when he doesn't care about Nami's backstory, just that one of his friends is hurting.

2024-04-25 21:56:30 +0000 UTCI'd like to offer a rebuttal to your opinion: Granted, I do agree with you about the emotional impact of the villagers secretly knowing about Nami's struggles but never saying anything to ease her burden being a key point in the arc. However, they traded that emotional punch for a different one that fits the pacing of the show. Instead, the villagers and Nojiko in particular hating Nami for real adds an extra layer of heartbreak to Nami's own personal trauma; as she not only gave up her own freedom for the sake of her village, but also gave up the love of her family and constantly suffered their resentment of her in order to SELL the lie of her betrayal of Coco Village to Arlong, which is more believable (to me) than the whole village just immediately figuring out Nami's long con from the beginning and just going along to spare Nami from extra burden. Personally, I also think it makes Nami's struggles even more heartbreaking, as she's fighting desperately to still save her village, despite the fact that they openly hate her so much to the point that, while it's not outwardly stated, it is subtly implied that Nami truly believes that Coco Village will never forgive her for her "betrayal" even if she does buy their freedom from Arlong, but she still fights because she loves them all so much. That makes the scene between her and Nojiko at the grave more meaningful, because you can see the relief from Nami that she actually FOUND redemption and EARNED forgiveness from her sister. In the Manga/Anime, I actually found it horrible that the villagers knew the truth and never told Nami, because she suffered emotionally for years thinking they hated her, only to find out they knew the whole time, and it felt like she was denied release from her pain because she never needed to be in turmoil to begin with. Here, in the LA version, it's a much better payoff to see Nami achieve the REDEMPTION she fought for so desperately, even in such a small part, despite believing she was beyond forgiveness to the village.

2024-04-25 20:42:27 +0000 UTCi LOVE how they literally combined both the pinwheel & tangerine symbolism into one, & the hat scene too. & well i actually prefer when live action arlong /doesn't/ accentuate his chin like as if we're going by "FB pfp rules" lmaooo

2024-04-25 20:00:07 +0000 UTCYeah, wasn't a fan of all the unnecessary changes they did for this arc. The village not knowing Nami's true intentions, especially Genzo and Nojiko (who was basically Nami's only rock before the Strawhats). It just makes it seem like they're absolute buffoons who turned on her and never even bothered to think about why she did what she did. Genzo's scar from trying to protect Nami were just turned into random scars. Speaking of Genzo, they completely took out the purpose of the pinwheel. Nami's tattoo was supposed to symbolize both of her parental figures, the tangerine for Bell-mere and the pinwheel for Genzo. But they removed it and then had to make a new reason for it, which just turned it another symbolizm for Bell-mere. Nami not being kidnapped and basically forced to work for Arlong got turned into just a deal she initiated. Luffy actually caring about Nami's past was a big one that bothered me. In the manga and anime he doesn't care about that at all, all he cared about was that his friend was hurting and he was their to help them. It's all just baffling to me, especially when the show's writers were HUGE One Piece fans.

2024-04-25 18:50:23 +0000 UTCif it wasn't for that iconic scene at the end, i'd say this is by far the worst episode of the entire live action, simply by what they did to the villagers of cocoyashi. i get the LA not having as much time and resources to properly adapt and develop every character from the manga there is, but the fact that they made everyone in the village completely oblivious to what nami was doing almost killed the entire thing for me. not only does it not make sense, the whole reason nojoki has those tattoos is to show solidarity with nami and making her feel less horrible about arlong forcing his brand on her after all, it also takes away a lot of the impact of the whole arc. the revelation that the villagers not only knew what nami was doing, yet never said anything as to not put any extra burden on her and make her feel like she needs to live up to villages expectations, but were also willing to fight for her despite everything, even if that meant certain death, was such a gut punch and without it the scene just doesn't feel right. still props to emily for her acting in that scene. she did an awesome job.
