Straw Hat Episode 322+323

OH MY GOSSSSHHHH

Straw Hat Episode 322+323

Comments

Also, in the English dub of This episode, one of those guys said “it sounds like a chicken being choked to death” I didn’t understand the context at the time, but remembering that NOW, the VA’s clearly threw in some good jokes.

Chris White

It's quite an interesting trend that he has. It's rather unfortunate that the dubbing team hasn't picked up on it, because it's clear for some. For example, Chapter 6, "一人目", translates literally as "The First Person", and Chapter 68, "4人目", translates as "The Fourth Person. However, Chapter 94, "二人目", which when translated literally means "The Second Person", has been dubbed as "The Other Villain". While that's a possible translation, it misses the context that's established by the pattern, as no other chapters use the "人目" terminology aside from other Numbered Chapters. It's interesting to note, however, that while Luffy is probably exempt from the pattern as the founder (As the Zeroth Person), only Zoro, Nami, Usopp, Sanji, Franky, and Brook have corresponding numbered chapters. As of yet, we are still missing "The Fifth" for Chopper and "The Sixth" for Robin. Knowing Oda and his tremendous attention to detail, in addition the fact that Franky and Brook received their numbered chapters and that Usopp and Nami received their chapters after they became regular cast and-or crew members, this discrepancy for Chopper and Robin has been a topic of discussion and theory crafting for years now.

... I've seen One Piece several times over, I've read the manga over three times over and I did not know this, because I've gotten into the habit of skipping chapter names to avoid spoilers and it seems I never stopped. Well, I can't complain, what a great excuse to read the manga again!

I'm following way too many nsfw accounts to use a name here

So, a bit of a fun fact: in the manga, Oda has a naming pattern for the chapters where someone formally join's Luffy's crew. The chapter that Zoro joined was called "The First", Sanji joined in "The Fourth", and so on. This doesn't reference when they start travelling with him, however. "The Second" took place when Nami came aboard after Arlong was defeated. There was no "The Third" chapter during East Blue for Usopp. Rather, the chapter that this episode was based on was called "The Third and the Seventh", as it is the chapter that Oda officially considers Usopp and Franky to have joined the Straw Hats. This means that he has been preparing for Usopp to leave ever since he was first introduced.

i can see the childbirth arguments, but cancer?? for real? cmon man, it doesnt hurt as bad as cancer...

Lipton Iced Tea

It is worse than that

Calvin Cook

First time I saw this episode….I died laughing for like….5 whole minutes. I kept rewinding over and over just to get a good laugh. Edit: but yeah, this is why Robin is called demon child. She’s not afraid to Torture a man like this.😨😨😨

Chris White

That wasnt Usopp

Justin Moore

I just realized something- you mean to tell me Chopper can smell Usopp from THAT distance over the SEA, but couldn't smell him when he was wearing the mask?????

pontius copilot

I mean… he often acts like a First mate/vice-captain… but he’s not officially. The only title that the strawhats have in regards to hierarchy are Captain and Crew, nothing more.

Julio Castillo

"Thank you, well-placed wood!" AYO!

Liesmith

Did you know that many of the Franky Family were shipwright failures, Zambai and the two sisters included since they were inspired by Tom and his train, however they all failed the exam to join Galley-La. And for those of you who may not have noticed, Paulie is another who was inspired to become a shipwright after seeing Tom's sea train, he is one of the kids chasing after it in the Franky backstory flashback.

Draconic

I'm so glad you said about taking responsibility as a man. Every time you mentioned Usopp's manhood before in the back of my head I was like, "Yes, BUT, if his manhood gets in the way of him taking responsibility then that's on him."

Lexi

"If a captain stops commanding respect, his gang will fall apart without fail" is a crazy thing to say as you're nonchalantly tugging on the captain's cheek xD

Cvillain626

Unhinged Robin is the best. ♥

Lexi

Also shows how....QUIRKY Robin actually is underneath her facade of mystery. And I LOVE it.

UltramanUltimo

According to Oda, Robin could feel EVERYTHING she was grabbing. Also, how odd that the one place Franky never modified turned out to be his greatest weakness.

UltramanUltimo

Now go back and look at the drawing Luffy made of what kind of shipwright he wanted as they were approaching Water 7 lol

Billy Green

IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN MEEEEEE!!!!!!!

mustofolys

So on the topic of respecting Luffy's position as Captain: From this point on, Usopp never refers to himself as Captain Usopp again. Something to look out for ;)

DaniDeFig

its not really the reveal of Pluton but more the reveal of the blueprints, as it was first mentioned in the Arabasta arc by Crocodile-face. another important moment i feel is also the Strawhats declaring war on the world government and all of them finally getting a bounty (other than Usopp because he wasn't there ofc)

nick

I said it before, I'll say it again. Water Seven/Enies Lobby is by far the best arc in One Oiece. There's simply no other that even compares when it comes to the sheer amount of emotional moments and important revelations packed into a single storyline: -luffy vs usopp and the resulting fallout -robin's backstory and the reveal of the buster call -the reveal of pluton and the cipher pols -the reveal of enies lonbby, navy hq and impel down -the introduction of the first ever major power ups in diable jamble, asura and gear 2+3 -the death of marry and the introduction of the sunny -the reveal of garp, dragon and the emperors -a new nakama joining the crew -zoro stepping up as vice captain and laying down the law there just isn't a single dull moment throughout the entirety of the arc from start to finish and I absolutely love it.

JHow

well, he is the oldest of the orignal crew (well, technically it's sanji by a few months), although both robin and now franky are both quiet a bit older than any of the rest.

JHow

Zoro's First Mate/Big Bro instincts are always a treat~

DrewSB

What an end to a fantastic arc! So exited for you to see what comes next! This next arc definitely has some big high points and low points. But overall the next 200 episodes contain some truly incredible storytelling.

Aesthetic_Delta

Saying Usopp left because of the Merry is an over-simplification. While that was certainly a large part of it, a lot of it was related to his insecurity over his place in the Straw Hats. He felt weak compared to the monsters and probably less useful than Nami and Chopper who have more obviously practical talents as navigator and doctor respectively. That insecurity was massively heightened due to the Franky Family kicking his arse and stealing the money meant for the Merry. He knew the Merry was done for the moment he heard the official assessment, but his grief over losing the ship and his inferiority complex essentially caused him to "leap before he was pushed". He abandoned the crew out of fear that he would drag them down or be perceived to drag them down, something none of the crew could have predicted as they never saw him as inferior. It's understandable he felt that way, but his behaviour wasn't conducive to good crew dynamics and was disrespectful to Luffy in particular as he would never have kicked Usopp out. He absolutely needed to apologise for his actions, having sorted out his feelings during Enies Lobby.

Beetlefan

Gonna save you a novel and just say that I love when Zoro is the most adult in the room

Rej

also damn reading a whole book in the comments lol

james blaire

oda really said 'throw it back franky!' franky 'YOW!' lol

james blaire

Watching Alicia's expression slowly change when she realized Usopp was not onboard was wild!

Shrapnel

i love that sooo damn much. it doesn't even matter how very right usopp was. still gotta apologize. that's like a lesson for the world in general. reeeal, real shit. a slice of that humble pie. this writing is so amazing

Yagi di Hoshi

wait, did she miss a line at the end of 322? EDIT: She did !! Alicia, ya gotta let the TBC endcards play out XD

Yagi di Hoshi

I remember watching One Piece with my mom years ago, and she couldn't understand the why in regards to what is going with Usoop needing to apologize, despite how obvious it is, even in other circumstances.

De L

There is a One Piece action adventure game for the Wii that acts kind of like a memory glossary of the story, with bosses being recreations of adversaries throughout the series. Franky and the Sunny are a part of the crew at this point. The reason why I bring that up, is that the game has an English VA cast, and the anime dub was only at the Skypia arc, meaning that the game revealed Franky's English VA several arcs ahead of the anime. Another point is that when Luffy reunites with the crew, as the crux of the story launches the Sunny and scatters the crew, the magoffin produces a flashback of when each of the crew joined. Franky's was at just when Sanji was calling out Franky for not having his speedo on.

De L

Huh? What are you on about? Usopp left BECAUSE of the Merry, its not only not unrelated, its DIRECTLY connected to the Merry. This entire situation happened because Luffy was absolutely dogshit as a captain and couldn't properly relate to his crewmember what happened and why he came to a decision regarding the Merry, and because Usopp couldn't let the Merry go after everything they've been through, and everything hes been through, especially with such a crappy, fast-paced excuse. For them to both let the Merry finally go after it sunk and have a heart-to-heart harkening back to the very poor, emotionally charged argument they had about it in the first place, explaining why they acted the way they did, having Luffy promise to act better as a captain and having Usopp take responsibility for what he did in verbal form would've been an amazing moment that i have no doubt Oda would do justice. And even if it did have one of the negative side effect you mentioned, it still would've been better than what we got here, by a large margin

Lewd Angel

wow, people post book long comments :O

Can Arabacıoğlu

Fun fact. Robin can feel everything that the limbs she creates feel

Lenny_has_arived

Luffy and Usopp just having a conversation unrelated to Merry right after its death to solve a conflict is ANYTHING but the perfect moment. It would've been realistic but narratively it would've been a nice way to either take away from Merry's death, take away from Usopp's apology or/and ruin the pacing of that scene. Knowing Oda he would've been able to make it work but honestly there was no reason to make things harder for himself and risk so much just to do something he could simply do differently

I believe that there are 2 (Well, 2.5 if you count shooting the flag, which you can) moments that truly cements the Straw Hats as a crew. And both involve a member leaving and rejoining. The first is the walk to Arlong Park, and the second is Usopp rejoining (Along with Zoro´s ultimatum). Arlong Park is the first time the crew act as one. Where they stop playing around. And by demanding that Usopp apologizes Zoro basically points out how that things are getting real for them and they can no longer afford to play around like that. Anyways, here is a writeup I wanted to do way back when Usopps first left, but I kept being unsure if it was too spoilery, so I decided to save it for this. TLDR: Zoro, Nami and Sanji fits in what TVTROPES call the Freudian Trio: consisting of the Logical/Realistic One, the Emotional/Idealistic One and the In-Betweener. I think the Usopp situation is really interesting in how it shows the Straw Hats reacting to it, and the roles of Zoro, Nami and Sanji as an emotional trio. Zoro is a brutal realist (A term I just made up). When the crew gets emotional, he tries to become a cliff they can clash against. This often means he takes on an antagonistic role (Such as when he suggested the gang simply kidnap Vivi, if they miss her so much), allowing the crew to rage at him. In the case of Usopp leaving, it means he is the one to take on the practical role, as Luffy is unable to. After the duel, he is the one who starts giving orders to abandon ship and figure out what to do next. In the same vein, he is the one to remind Luffy of his responsibility as a captain. Noting that if Luffy falters now, the others have nothing to lean on. Another thing that is interesting about his actions during the fight, is that while the whole gang runs out after Usopp after he punches Luffy, Zoro stays behind and only leaves when Luffy leaves. And for the entire duration he stays right behind him. And I just think that is a really cool detail, as it shows Zoros priorities. The others focus is on Usopp leaving and trying to convince him to get back. Zoro´s focus is on Luffy, and whatever he decides to do next. Both because he cares about him, but also because he knows this is a fragile moment for the crew, and Luffy needs to be strong for it. Zoro´s main concern during the thing is to keep Luffy stable and the crew together in the face of a sad event. Nami, meanwhile, reacts with what I would call Emotional Reason (Another term I just made up). Nami tend to react to things like a normal person would (...Well, perhaps a normal person with anger issues). This also tend to make her have some of the strongest emotional reactions to things in the crew. She gets mad when annoyed, shocked and scared when she meets the strange and unusual and horrified when confronted with cruelty. Which also tends to make her one of the groups emotional centers. If the group meets a great injustice, odds are Nami is the one to vocalize their horror and disdain for it. When confronted with Usopp leaving her focus is on Usopp being hurt and trying to fix the issue. To her, it is an issue among friends. Compared to Zoro, who sees it as an issue among crew (This is not to say Zoro doesn´t care about Usopp, just what I see his focus being). And so she treats it as a falling out among friends, and gets mad at what she perceives as stupid pride getting in the way of reconciliation. Because while Nami might understand the seriousness and meaningfulness of what is happening logically, she doesn´t get it emotionally. So she lashes out at Zoro for his perceived cruelty about the situation and tries to solves the situation by talking about it. Nami´s focus is to keep her friend group together, and make sure they are okay. Sanji meanwhile, is the sad middle point of it all. Oda once said that if the Straw Hats were a family, then Zoro would be the first son, Sanji the second, Usopp the third (With Luffy being the fourth). And I can see that, because Sanji gives me big middle child syndrome in this whole situation. If I were to describe Sanji like I did with the two others, it would be Emotional Realist. Because he gets it, like Zoro do. He understand the importance of the duel, the meaningfulness of Usopps choice and the whole thing. And he fucking hates it. Because Sanji is a really caring dude. It is one of the first thing we learn about him when he feeds Gin, and it is reinforced when he helps Chopper leave medicine and food for Usopp. He wants the gang to resolve this as friends, he wants Luffy and Usopp to get over their pride and reconcile. But he also knows why they can´t. This is also what puts him in the sad position of explaining all of this to Chopper. Because Chopper is baby (Noted by Oda as being the youngest son). To Chopper, being a pirate means going on fun adventures with his friends (See his speech during the Davy Back Fight arc). To him, all of this is new and he tends to see a lot of it, like Pride and Dreams, through somewhat storybook like lenses. So when something like this happens, he just plain don´t understand. Why his friends would fight like that. And since Zoro has turned into a rock, and Nami is basically having a panic attack, it falls to Sanji to be the one to look out for Chopper. Which he does for several episodes afterwards as well. Where he tries to explain what is going on to the kid. Sanji´s focus is on taking care of everyone. Even and especially Usopp. I think he would love to be stoic and realistic about it, like Zoro, but he can´t.. This is a trend we see several times throughout the series. Zoro reacts to situations with stoic acceptance of their reality. Nami reacts with strong emotions (Often greed, horror or wonder) and Sanji a mixture of the two. But in this we see all three run off in one scene. It is also interesting to note Usopps general role in all of this, because he is often the mid-point between the "Older Siblings" and Chopper. He sees things through the same story-like lenses as Chopper, but is also very realistic about the reality of the situation. So he tend to act a lot of Nami (Hence why they are one of my favorite Straw Hat duos), but aspire to be like Sanji and Zoro. I think it is also interesting to draw focus on the difference between how Zoro and Sanji interact with the crew (Especially Usopp/Chopper), where Zoro often takes on a protective role, while Sanji takes on a caring role. Anyways, rant over. Just wanted to get that out of my system. Can´t believe Patreon allows people to write this long comments. Can´t believe I wrote this long a comment. Guess I just have a lot of strong emotions about the funny pirate cartoon.

Mother of all Bible-length posts incoming but, i love this arc to death and i have a lot of thoughts on its ending so apologies in advance lol, no spoilers ofc. This is the one part in an otherwise 10/10 arc that was just...super fucking bad, this is a common issue Oda has unfortunately but hes god awful at character development. We had such amazing growth during this arc for Usopp and it was all rendered meaningless. And im sorry but Alicia is being hypocritical, a while back during EL she stated that Usopp has to have a special way of coming back, that he can't just grovel because it'd destroy his pride and walk back all the development hes had so far. That was switched around so quickly here, even Usopp says during the apology that hes being pathetic, and its true because he is. We wanna talk about Zoro's loyalty? Usopp got beat within an inch of his life after challenging Luffy, he lost the duel, and he still came with them to help rescue Robin. All jokes about Sogeking aside, that was all him. Not to mention, he outright gave up his life FOR Luffy when he challenged Lucci to fight he'd 100% die in, he is the reason Luffy is alive at all after that fight and nobody can tell me that fight wasn't won by nakama powerup. His 'apology' was losing the duel, his redemption was helping rescue Robin and risking his life for Luffy. THAT is his loyalty to his Captain. Zoro's little "no matter what feelings there were during the first fight" speech is a huge amount of bs, its INSANELY important what happened then because the fault was 99% with Luffy. Luffy, who is a terrible captain, demanding a captains respect is crazy. Personally, what should've happened is Luffy and Usopp should've had a heart-to-heart during Merry sinking. That was the perfect moment for him to rejoin, i wish he didn't put the mask back on, because we could've had a beautiful moment where Usopp wasn't in his own head, he could've taken responsibility for leaving the gang and asked in a genuine way to rejoin. Instead what we got was a horribly placed subplot of having to 'show respect to the Captain because hes the Captain", even though that respect wasn't earned from Usopp's side.

Lewd Angel

Btw. It is from Oda confirmed, that "anything" Robin touches with her Devilfruit Power, she feels also whit her actual body/hands! e.i. Yes, Robin felt Franky's balls in her hands!

Chamoun101

The "I want to live!" to "Cock & Ball Torture" pipeline go crazy

nervouspirate

As someone who is 100% male and has been hit in the testicles before I can 100% confirm that it is not a pleasant experience.

BewearKing64

Robin has the most terrifying ability in all anime.

Captain-Kerfuffle

He makes luffy do the captain stuff he has to

Icy

Honestly I really hate that his apology was the last resort and not the first thing he said. He had days to reflect and figure out what he needed to do and failed. Wish he had the same resolve here as he did when he decided to leave them.

Okoga

Good thing Sanji wasn't around for that, he's exactly the kind of simp who'd be jealous of Robin grabbing Franky's balls.

Alopex The Wanderer

Robin being a Demon Child is 100% accurate, clear evidence presented in video form above

Lewd Angel

can confirm being hit in the nads is like an instant -50% strength debuff and makes you wanna throw up. Its kinda weird when you think about it like us fellas just have some of their important vulnerable organs on the outside of their body with minimal protection relative to other organs. Robin was wild for doing that she got that demon in her.

Kieren

next up Fishman Island! LETS GOOO

nick

The episode that made it clear zoro is the vice captain

Eric

I bet Sanji is the type of guy who said "it should have been me!" when he heard what Robin did to Franky

GeneralBass

Robin took the saying "grabbing someone by the balls" literally. I mean, I'm open to new experiences if it's Robin... XD

leviathan_13

Fun fact, Dos Fluer: Grab is Robin’s VA favourite “attack” of all time, and she always asks Oda to make Robin use it more whenever she has the chance lol

naito

"Standing before the crashing waves, naked and proud, you wouldn't ask a lion to put on underwear, so why a man?" - Franky, 2014

Beetlefan

The Robin moment was one of the most hilarious and out of pocket scenes in the series so far. Oda can be a freak sometimes.

TurtleKungFu

Honestly I cried at the same time when Alicia cried as soon as Ussop apologized, good lord I love Ussop.
