I love this arc. Gon an Killua have spent most of their time in somewhat controlled environments, this is the first time they're confronted with something truly out of their league, and they lose, badly. it's realistic as hell, and only makes the rest of the story so much better.

2024-05-25 16:45:38 +0000 UTCThat's what I enjoy about HxH and JJK both - 99% of the time, the outcomes of the situations are completely realistic. If the character uses some kind of hidden ability to turn the tables, we get hints and foreshadowing that they've been preparing it. If the character uses their intelligence to get out unscathed, it comes with other costs. There's very minimal amount of ass-pulling (tbh if there was any less of it, it would be more seinen than shonen)

2024-05-23 00:49:21 +0000 UTCHunterxHunter is truly a deconstruction of the Shonen Genre, almost everyone on their first watch assumes that Gon and Killua will pull it off and defeat Knuckle and Shoot.... but they didn't.... sometimes reality can be disappointing and cruel. That's one of the things i love about this series... how unpredictable it can be, by making the Protagonists not being the only ones who move the plot forward Togashi is able to craft many situations and outcomes that escape the viewer's predictions without it feeling unsatisfying or like it comes out of nowhere. It also has a lot to do with how masterfully written the characters are, and how they are not the "center of the universe", meaning that Gon and Killua's adventures aren't tied to the fate of their world or something like that. They're a tiny part of a much larger world that continues to move and shift without them.
