It's really hard to determine gender from the way Japanese works, unless it's specified explicitly. I mean, look at Kalluto, as well

Kite dying is definitely flagged leading up to this, but having him die off-screen and the sheer casual brutality of the reveal is crazy. Great reactions though. I'm glad you guys are enjoying this arc so much!
