Straw Hat Episode 404+405

Comments

Holy shit the team up between Law and Kid is foreshadowing. If you know you know, I just realized it though.

GrimPitbull

This isn't the beginning of the second part, it's the beginning of the climax of the first part.

Moku

Counting Omatsuri Island, this was the fourth death of the Straw Hat Crew. Aokiji showed mercy when he didn't need to. Kuma showed mercy twice. This incident was particularly poignant, because it was slow and drawn out, and they were completely helpless. Kuma didn't have to do what he did. He could have sent them to their immediate deaths, and there would have been nothing they could have done. The Straw Hats all died here. They were just given another chance.

Moku

Welcome, everyone, to what many consider the soft beginning of the second half of One Piece. No spoilers, just enjoy the journey!

Xanis

the internet isn't ready for already-known stuff to be animated I don't want to imagine what watching that stuff come to life would be like, let alone the other horrors that await us further on... I'll be there but still.............

Rhiley Jones

12:03 "Whooo~ Why am I crying? Q_Q" Bro, we haven't even started... 31:09 Yeah, I do think that this arc was purposely set up to give you a very clear idea of what the arc was "going" to focus on. Then it hard cuts to *this*. If no-one tells you how short this arc is, you might expect it to be as long as the usual main fighty ones. But no. Turns out we aren't powerful enough to fight racism yet. Yet. 47:46 Yepp. That is indeed FUCKED. The most unhinged ending to a One Piece episode yet. Fucking hell... Still love your content Alicia ^^

DaniDeFig

even though I had already watched it, this episode gave me a fucking panic again. memories from the day I watched it are flooding back, no wonder Christmas was never the same sorry if it's oversharing

Rhiley Jones

sentomaru talking about being "the most tight-lipped man in the world" in front of kuma is kind of hilarious

Mirazatha

Imagine instead of "TO BE CONTINUED" at 405 it would just say "THE END"

Denaze

*Sniffle* "Gather up all of the crew, it's time to ship out Bink's Brew. Wave goodbye, but don't you cry, our memories remain. Our days are but a passing dream, everlasting though they seem. Neath the moon, we'll meet again, the winds a lullaby."

DrewSB

Error 404, Zoro not found

V_VMat

"What is this arc?" -Trauma

V_VMat

One of the most brutal episodes in the whole series so farrrr :3

Grrv

also hitting hard is that the character designer for the anime, from here on, is someone else now. won't be the same now

Yagi di Hoshi

& the character designer changed from here.....

Yagi di Hoshi

@leviathan_13 very similar boat here

Yagi di Hoshi

&or peak toei

Yagi di Hoshi

sheer emotional violence

Yagi di Hoshi

This episode hits extra hard when you remember that Luffy barely has a grasp on object permanence.

Gabe Collamer

Definitely one of the most brutal episodes in the whole series.

PerfectYarn

The strawhat crew died here.

It was actually revisiting Sabaody with you that made me think on something I heard in a review a while back. The reviewer in question didn't like how the fight with Gecko Moria ended because it felt like too much of an ass pull, just kind of an undeserved power-up that didn't feel earned, and initially I did agree with that, until having revisited Sabaody. I think Oda was very deliberate with that ass-pull for this exact moment, to give you the belief that no matter how hopelessly outgunned and overpowered the enemy may be, the Straw Hats would always find a way, and we'd end with a big ol happy party like we always do. Ennis Lobby was one thing, everyone had powered up for it and we stood shoulder to shoulder with CP-9, Thriller Bark was meant to lower our guard, to lull us into a false Shonen sense of security that the good guys, our heroes, would always pull the day. But they don't.

Koirby

When I first got into one piece, I started with the anime and this was the last episode released when I caught up. I switched to the manga and the last chapter was the end of the I.D. saga. Crazy time to get into the series :D

leviathan_13

man imagine watching this weekly and seeing ''the straw hats suffered a complete collapse'' i'd be depressed all week lol

james blaire

Yeah, this is the point where it's actually fully nailed into viewers that the Straw Hats have been punching WAY ABOVE their weight class for a while now. The other 9 Supernovas were only able to escape because Kizaru turned his attention away from them before Rayleigh got in his way. Outside of that, there's no overpowering the enemy, no gimmick to get by a logia user, and no underestimation by the bad guys. It took TWO MONTHS for a bunch of rookies, most of whom were from the weakest of the Four Seas, to completely dominate said seas, overthrow the largest criminal organization in the first half of the Grand Line, save 3 whole nations in said Grand Line, ALL OF WHICH WAS DONE WITH A SHIP NOT BUILT FOR THAT SEA, Pick a fight with AND WIN said fight with the World Government, AND beat 2 different Warlords (and escaped from a third via Kuma's testimony). They finally ran into an enemy that was no longer going to take them lightly in any way, and showed them exactly what Moria was talking about: "As you are, you're not ready for the New World."

Kamvex

t24:00 And thus begins what I like to call "the trauma saga"

Trevor Appel

"Just put them on the ship and let us leave" Oh no. No no. Kuma is so, so much kinder than that.

Simulacrae

Also: I'm so so sorry, but Thriller Bark WAS the happy arc....

Simulacrae

47:45 - 48:25 She broke

GaimeGuy

Let me just say something I've always stood by: Gecko Moria was right. These are the sorts of enemies theyd find in the new world. And if they had gone there when they'd meant to, they would have been wiped out. Moria was a lot of things, but not a liar.

Simulacrae

Mad respect to Brook for dedication to the bit.

Okoga

This episode was nothing but absolute heartbreak from beginning to end, it took me weeks to recover from the strawhats defeat.

Sam Marsh

Ok, I see... I always used "saga" and "arc" interchangeably. I only saw the anime listing, and that's work with "seasons", even if it's not accurate: S4: Water 7 (207-325) S5: Thriller Bark (326-384) S6: Summit War (385-516) In this sense I called the whole Summit war an "arc", probably wrongly then. Thanks for the correction. :)

Kapitány Zoltán

An arc is a form of bridge and a means of getting from one point to the next like how you said it set up future events. Saobody is a bridge that has its start and end but it is the start of a saga. Also its common for one piece fens to divide arcs into islands.

Pirate King Buggy D. Clown

I love that Alicia says Luffy is gonna need therapy considering where he gets sent after this. XD

Gus

I think the thing here to consider Kapitany, is one piece is split into arcs and sagas, you aren't wrong about the set up, but that is how it was released, multiple arcs make up a saga. This set of episodes for Sabaody IS officially listed as an arc. Going back to a previous saga as an example: 2.4 Water 7 Saga 2.4.1 Long Ring Long Land Arc 2.4.2 Water 7 Arc 2.4.3 Enies Lobby Arc 2.4.4 Post-Enies Lobby Arc

TheNDGhost

oda: time for the empire strikes back arc of the story

Ben

Sadly I cannot explain without spoilers why everything in this was just setting up things. But for the 20 episodes... You know this is OP, and we had fillers almost this long? Just because something take time, it doesn't become a mostly independent storyline, aka arc...

Kapitány Zoltán

I mean its like 20 episodes with a full narrative and character development with a definitive resolution so…an arc XD

None

The worst part? One Piece went on HIATUS after this episode/arc. We just had to SIT with that. And like, pretty sure that the cut I'd watched, at the time, didn't even have a "to be continued." Which, like, intentional or no? Genuinely haunting.

Lyn

Imagine it is a last episode, holy shit. Most depressing anime ever

Jakub Fabian

Farewell to Sabaody, one of the most escalating arcs I have seen in anime. The arc where Oda decides to just traumatize everyone. And make sure you absolutely loathe the government. First of all, I will say that I am glad Brook went second. I don´t wanna imagine what it would be like for him to see yet another crew disappear one by one. I always thought Zoro went first, not just because he is the most senior crew-member, but also because he is the rock of the crew. He is often the one to keep a cool head in dramatic and emotional moments, and the one to suggest the realistic option (even if it is unpleasant, or insane). Not to mention the fact that he has a reputation for being utterly indestructible. So seeing him be so utterly helpless is just heartbreaking. Not to mention how Sanji, the responsible and caring middle brother of the crew, is casually knocked aside so that he can watch Usopp disappear in front of him. Unable to protect anyone. And then we got Nami crying out for help, and Robin desperately reaching for Luffy and it just so sad all around.

Ebofa

What was really wild was they ended the arc like that and then you had two filler episodes before we got back to it. So imagine 3 weeks of waiting to see what happened after all that.

Bj Howe

Sabaondy Archipelago is an interesting metaphor with bubbles: Bubbles, while pretty, are ephemeral and will eventually vanish from existence abruptly. Much like the "good times" the Straw Hats had until now.

Vincent

I don't know why everyone take this as a whole separate arc, I always thought about it as the opening of the arc... There is no mayor plot, it's just setup for the future events. A lot of setup, but still just that.

Kapitány Zoltán

possible the strawhats lowest point.

Speed1247

More one piece??? WHAT A WONDERFUL DAY

tinegab remulla

Peak Oda was in his bag writing this arc

Unsaidrumble

This was why everyone said not to mess with the royal dragon d-bags.
