Lifelong Dinosaur nerd here: while commonly thought of in pop culture as "flying Dinosaurs" due to their widespread ecological success during the Mesozoic era, Pterosaurs (a diverse group which ranged from the fuzzy & adorably tiny bat-like Anurognathus to the horrifyingly massive giraffe-stork Quetzalcoatlus) weren't technically Dinosaurs in exact scientific terms, but they are very closely related to Dinosaurs (they share a relatively recent common ancestor before they exploded into diversity during the late Triassic & early Jurassic Periods) as both groups are contained within the greater Archosauria clade of reptiles (alongside the extended Crocodilian family tree). It's also worth noting that the creature in this episode is most similar to a Pteranodon (meaning "toothless wing"), as the actual genus of Pterodactylus (meaning "wing finger") was a rather small animal, roughly the size of a modern crow or seagull (and to answer the question of diet, both species most likely fed primarily on fish). Also, birds are the last living group of Dinosaurs, more specifically members of the Maniraptoran clade, which makes them close cousins to Dromeosaurids such as the famous "quick thief" Velociraptor (which was actually about the same size as a turkey; the creatures featured in the Jurassic Park/World films are actually more similar to the genus Deinonychus (meaning "terrible claw") in terms of size & skeletal structure).

I believe they are a flying lizard, or a proto-bird but I'm probably wrong on the second thing, for more info see, Lindsay Nikole, on the interwebs, she mad knowledgeable and super certified to explain current and ancient zoology. Highest of Recommends.

Durasin

As much as I love this episode, it taught me there’s not so much naivety/dumbass actions I can take😂

Dale Wright

My baby siblings also did the fake crying sometimes, I could tell the difference and I'd call them out on it.

Talon Karrde

Love this episode, it's the best one off story episode for me, think it does a lot for Stan

Talon Karrde

so from what I see dinosaurs are basically a proto version of birds before they got covered in feathers, pterodactyls are just lizards that evolved wings. the difference is blah blah bone structure, evolution path ect ect.

Jacob

Pterodactyls weren't named after someone, their name is just Ancient Greek for "Winged Finger". Pterosaurs are the closest known relative of dinosaurs, but they aren't dinosaurs, they're just different types of reptile. For the sake of comparison, it's like calling all carnivorans (bears, cats, dogs, raccoons, etc.) "dogs" because dogs are the most popular members of the group.

Jay Redmond

Any big lizard is a dino to me

Gildarts1#fan

Others have explained it, but basically, dinosaur is a pretty specific category. There are things you would expect to be dinosaurs that technically aren't--just different kinds of lizards that lived during the same time as them. It's a pretty technical distinction; most of the time it's the kind of thing you'd only bring up as an amusing piece of trivia. I mean, you gotta have pterodactyls at your dinosaur exhibit. The kids love them!

Lexi

Theres is probably a right way of saying pterodactyls, but adding PAterodactyls i'll tell you what! Is more funnier lol

james blaire

Naaaah i was going its disney but then i remembered tarzan's poacher being hanged, so its more par for the course, still grim though lol

james blaire

Pterodactyls are their own thing, but they do share a lot of similarities with modern birds and the dinosaurs birds came from. I recently found out that pterodactyls and modern birds have four steps to their breathing as opposed to the two most mammals have. Their lungs have three sets of chambers, where ours only have one

Spacefrog

Pterodactyls are actually flying reptiles some wat related to dinos but there not

Sleeping Cat Studios

pterodactyls (and pterosaurs as a whole) are their own thing. They're related to dinosaurs, but are not actually dinosaurs themselves

Zoe Breeden

Dipper casually ignoring he's still got the negatives of the pictures.

end credits code, please don't post answer. These codes you can do yourself. A=1 Z =26 etc. (A1Z26 cipher) "9-20 23-15-18-11-19 6-15-18 16-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-7-19!"

The part about your niece reminds me of how I was once involved in managing a game where two large groups of small children would hit each other with clubs, until only one side remained standing. And whenever one of them would get hit in the head, me and the other judges would watch as they quickly looked around to see if one of us saw it. If not, they would simply shrug and continue playing. But if they saw that one of us was looking at them, then they would immediately start crying bloody murder about it. It was a rather informative experience.

Don’t forget, it works for piiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigs!!!!

Sam Marsh

yeah, pterodactyl isn't a dinosaur because "it flew and it's front limbs stretched out to the sides" They are Dino cousins, but for the sake of simplicity I still just call them dinos anyway.

TLKDesu

To quote adventuredinosaurs.com “Pterodactyls are not dinosaurs, but pterosaurs, a member of the Pterosauria clade categorized as flying reptiles. They’re related to dinosaurs and lived simultaneously; they even perished during the Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction event. Yet they’re in a league of their own.”

Dead-Man

This show is such a good vibe for me, but really the relationship between Stan and Mabel is my absolute favourite thing about it

Slurp

I still pronounce it DINO soars (Deeno)

Julian G

Gideon is Tom, while Stan is Jerry!

Chamoun101

Anyone else find it funny she pretty much overlooked the miner skulls and brought up the roof of the cop car? Miners disappearing aka dying was a small detail in the episode. Think it was in the newspaper or something as foreshadowing too this episode as well.

Robert

While everyone here's helpful with the pterosaurs question, I'll add onto that with marine reptiles (Plesiosaur, Mosasaur, etc.) aren't dinosaurs either. They're marine reptiles.

King of flames

Pterodactyls are basically reptiles not dinosaurs. They aren't birds, they have nothing to do with birds. Dinosaurs are the ancestors of birds.

Lektro

Pterodactyls are considered pterosaurs. Pterosaurs are in the archosaur classification alongside crocodilians and dinosaurs. They are as related to Dinosaurs as crocodilians are so you can consider them distant relatives but pterosaurs are verx much their own thing.

Smugtini

From looking at Wikipedia, this sums it up from what I can tell. It looks like they're also the only species under the banner of "Pterosaur" so they're *just* different enough to be unique, but with nothing else different in the same ways

Chaxinitus

13:40 the tattoo is a mystery to be solved at a later date.

Elias Cristerna

According to google pterodactyls are flying reptiles

Cody Xmas

I didn't look this up cause i'm lazy. But as far as i know pterodactyls are pterosaurs and pterosaurs evolved seperatly from dinosaurs they are both reptiles just a different kinds of reptiles. Fun fact, birds are dinosaurs but not all dinosaurs are birds. English is my second language so, i'm sorry if this was hard to read.

Suna Lakkis

Pterodactyl is a pterosaur
