One thing I love about Oda's One Piece is how he weaves so many lives together. We learn of children, and even the grown up characters have their backstory and childhood so drawn out. So well that we can even sympathize with the monster Arlong. Such a master storyteller.

2025-02-25 02:06:27 +0000 UTCThere seems to be a ton of sympathy for the Fishmen about the "miscommunications" that are putting them at odds with the Straw Hats, and that's fine... but I couldn't sympathize any less - and it has nothing to do what Arlong did to Nami back in East Blue. It has to do with the general populace labeling the Straw Hats guilty on the kidnappings of the mermaids on nothing but hearsay (even when some of them know about Luffy straight up punching a Celestial Dragon over mermaid slavery - something their hero Fisher Tiger did) and destroying Fish Man Island based on nothing but a prophecy. And this continues even while the New Fish Man Pirates are trying to overthrow the nation and Vander Decken trying to abduct the princess... and it's not until they're forced to trample all over an image of their late queen that they realize what's going on around. I quote Robin from a few episodes back now (paraphrased): you're insane.

2024-08-09 18:50:05 +0000 UTCSo a really damn good bit of visual storytelling I love that is never called out is how much just the logo Hordy uses for his "new" fishman Pirates shows how fundamentally he fails to understand what Fisher Tiger's entire goal was. He uses the sun shape of the Sun Pirates, but with the solid red circle in the center replaced with the decapitated human. Meaning that his symbol could never be used to hide a slave brand, could never be used to protect someone who WAS horrifically abused by the Celestial Dragons, who actually went through hell. He turned what was a symbol meant to help those who have actually suffered, into a symbol of pointless hatred that could never be used to help anyone.

They would go around with these wooden tablets with a depiction of Jesus Christ on it and make people step on it to weed out the Christians.
