Straw Hat Episode 544+545

DAAAAAAAANG

Comments

I would argue with you on that, but itโ€™s possible with this show.

SECH

this!!!, she can literally feel it

Elunenai

I love how quickly and completely Alicia became a Jinbe fan. Man deserves it

Shatol Darmelo

"circle of hatred" Is normally meaningless dribble. I don't want to get into history but if you look at it, "the higher road" normally leads to you eating bullets with a smile on your face and you land taken.

The Pope Mobile

It's not that she's saying she can feel their pain. she can literally feel their pain & anguish with her observation haki.

ItzNack

The situation with the celestial dragon is so terrible.

Gildarts1#fan

not nearly enough people talk about how being kind and forgiving is the hard choice. ending a circle of hatred isn't as simple as just forgiving one another someone has to suffer but if you don't stop now then the suffering will continue to come back around and then there is more. It is just the sunk cost falsy you lose either way so it is better to take the burden now and build something and if your not strong enough for that, then that's ok you don't ask a beginner to lift 100kgs they are correct to refuse but let those who want to lift the weights

Rhiley Jones

Pistachio gelato is nom. Pistachio ice cream is nom, "with nuts."

E. H.

Its not "hitting a bully back" energy, it's violently murdering a man as an angry mob in front of children.

MaskedRider

That changes literally nothing lol, the children will KNOW you executed him. Maybe through logic in that moment, maybe they'll hear of it later, but they'll know, and you're still in the same place. I wanna see the CD's purged as much as the next guy but killing him would've been an insanely stupid ass decision, both for the long term future of the fishmen and the short term survivability of the island, that place would've been fuckin torched even on the suspicion they had anything to do with his death.

Lewd Angel

The answer to that argument then is take him away from the kids then execute him.

The Pope Mobile

Fuck off.

Okoga

Honestly this arc up to this point is not the part of it that is criticized.

Okoga

Forcing a kid to eat pistachio ice cream feels like it should be child abuse.

Okoga

I don't think that's what the show is saying? Like, Otohime never tries to argue that killing the CD is somehow immoral and that the former slaves killing the CD makes them as bad as he is. Her point was that they were going to pass on their hatred of humans to the next generation, because regardless of the actual context behind it, if you execute a human in front of children and then have every single adult start cheering and supporting it, you are going to have a lasting impact on how those children see the act of killing. It's the same logic behind why Tiger didn't want his past as a slave and the reason behind his death to be revealed to the rest of Fishman Island, because he didn't want his hatred of humans to be passed onto the next generation. I think it's fine if you don't agree 100% with Otohime. Without Shirahoshi's accidental intervention, that whole situation with the CD could have ended very badly. But saying that Otohime was judging the former slaves for wanting to kill their former tormentor and enslaver for completely justifiable reasons is just completely misreading what she actually said.

BirthdayParty

I'm with Alicia on this one. I get it, killing the celestial dragon could have had awful consequences--but that's the only reason to try to talk them out of it. The morality of killing him or the idea of "the cycle of hate has to stop somewhere" don't really factor into it for me. "If you hit a bully back then you're the real bully" energy.

Lexi

"They bandaged his hair?!" Are you sure that's not just how his head is shaped?

Lexi

Otohime's entire message is that continuing this cycle of hating one another is only going to ensure it carries on to the next generation. While yes, what happened to the former slaves is an atrocity, if you justify the murder of this one human, it opens the floodgates for humans to retaliate, and thus the racism will continue.

Santi

People shit on this arc a lot but I love it for its messages. Mainly that empathy can move the world. Tiger couldn't forget the slaves so he started a rebellion. Otohime could only feel the emotions of those around her and she will do anything to make their lives better. And hate itself is a gross lacking of empathy on all sides

Jimmy H Lam

It's not shared as well in the anime but in the manga its shown that the queen has observation that can feel others emotion. As in ultimate empathy, like it's her own feelings.

Jack Queen

Just to be clear, Otohime has her Observation Haki refined to a point where she can sense emotions

Draconic

Crazy how one piece has been and is going to be apart of her schedule for about the next year

Emperor Moist

55:23 "Actually" in nerd voice i m pretty sure she kinda feel them because of her haki ? neptune explained in earlier ep that she go down below because she can feel people emotion n stuff cuz of the strong haki she was born with soemthing like that

Lian Kojou

Alicia forgets the Queen literally can "feel" their pain, she has a really developed observation haki, just like Koby on marineford, she can "feel" their pain, anger and sadness, thats how she know about fisher tiger and didnt stop him from going to free the slaves, she knew she coulnt stop him unless they kill him, because he was like that too, she feeled that, and here she feeled the slaves too, diference being, she take the situation differently, she know that killing him because of what he did was only a repeateabble cycle of "you did so i did to you"

Faroth

Two theories that came out of this section of the story I can now share! 1. Queen Otohime only decided to travel to the surface because she saw what shirahoshi was capable of. She realised that because of her daughters power, if the next generation was allowed to grow up sounded by hate. It would end in a blood bath. That power to control the sea kings also gave her massive leverage to use if she needed politically too. 2. Arlong is currently a slave in the Holly land. We don't see him in impell down. He's a know crewmember of Fisher tiger. Jimbea is no longer a warlord so he has no protection. And... St Rosewald from the shabody arc is known for his collection of slaves that were former pirate captains.

Aesthetic_Delta

although not directly stated by Oda I believe that Otohime and Fisher tiger are directly inspired by Malcom X and Martin Luther King. Both their ideologies lie on very different sides of the spectrum but ultimately they both shared the same goal. MLK advocated for peace and acceptance on both sides while Malcom X advocated for a more confrontational stance and self-governance for black people at the time. they often butted heads as it was hard to see eye to eye. Oda tends to take a lot of real life inspiration from many different influential figures in the real world for his characters

Spicy Noodles

PinkHat Assbitch would disgust Arlong if the 2 ever met

Alex

My two cents about pinky promises: I think this specific pinky promise, between a mother and her four children of wild size, allows them to connect in a way that does not highlight said wild size. When it is just their pinkies touching, they do not seem so different. This helps me better understand Otohime's role as a mother.

E. H.

It's more like she actually feels it rather than just understands.

Rhiley Jones

If things go right with this celestial dragon, then this could open major gates for them that would've taken years otherwise

subject nerdam

I think Jimbei thought he could take care of Arlong if something happened and owed it to Fisher Tiger to give him a chance. I don't think he considered that maybe Arlong might suppress news of his antics getting back to the guy who would and could come stop it.

Dale Cooper

what's not explained well in the anime, is that Queen Otohime's Observation haki can feel other people's emotions, so she genuinely understands how and what they feel.

speedy weasel

nor will it keep people from trying to continue that cycle "just because".

Chris White

Yeah man, best take down this comment, or at least edit it in a way that doesn't give away episode details.

Chris White

Yeah, this is about showing the extreme of things, with Otohime being an extreme of pacisfism and trying to look only at making abetter future... but potentially at the cost of making those in the present who have real, legitmate reasons to hate these people feel like they are being ignored.

Seraphem

46:08 Keep in mind Alicia they believe themselves to be Gods and perfect in every way so of course he doesn't get his teeth fixed he thinks there isn't anything wrong with how he looks

Trevor Appel

Yeah...killing the celestial dragon there is not the play. It might take a bit, but once the world government finds out, the island is done. Otohime is doing everything they can to build a better future, even in the face of terrible people they might personally hate. I'm sure she understands that going to the surface with the celestial dragon is incredibly risky for her, but it sends the right message for future cooperation. They don't have the ability to posture strength at the surface by sending Neptune, because they'd ultimately lose that fight. Otohime is choosing the only route which leads to any long-term peace with the surface.

Mickey Muscalli

Fisher Tiger recognised that he can't forgive the sins of humans and how heavy they weigh on HIM. but the way forward for positive change requires co-operation, not violence. otherwise people will just die in the name of something - instead of living a brighter future. and I get it, some fights need to be fought but this is about overcoming hatred and violence does nothing for that goal

Silver Blade

Kizaru's voice actor unfortunately passed away not that long ago. May he rest in peace.

Alexander Saldivar

The third group of fishmen were actually the slavers that tries to take cami

NandoTNT

Well her observation is so tuned she can actually feel others emotions

Icy

Boooo! Ban. Delete.

DaniDeFig

Yeeeahhh, this. Swallow your pain. Swallow your pride. It's how you end the cycle. Someone simply has to just TAKE it. "Tank" the trauma, if you will. So that other aren't even affected by it. Like you said though. That doesn't make it the easy thing to do.

DaniDeFig

55:30 No, no, wait! She can LITERALLY feel their anguish!! Like Coby, Otohime has INSANE observation Haki! This is the Anime not being SUPER clear enough! Remember a few episodes ago, when she dodged bullets? Also, this ties into her crying when Fisher Tiger met her after he returned from traveling. She didn't know why, but she could FEEL how badly he'd been traumatized by being enslaved. That's why she cries. His hurt is *overwhelming* for her, who can LITERALLY feel people's emotions.

DaniDeFig

51:00 It's not that "every life matters". It's that Otohime is COMMITED to working *within* the system! Killing a Celestial Dragon carries too much risk. If the truth EVER got out: No more Fish-Man Island. It'll just be another O'hara. And like both Otohime and Fisher Tiger agree on: It's not about YOU! It's about the future generations. As far as Otohime is concerned if her life can be used to get ONE step closer to peaceful coexistence, then it's worth using! Same for the Celestial Dragon. He as an individual doesn't matter. His position does. Similar to the risk of killing him: Even if he spends his WHOLE life refusing to talk about being saved by Fish-Men publicly, just telling ONE random servant the truth will help move the needle forward. Eve if it's just a little bit. (Of course, ideally, he tells lots of people. And with him being a Celestial Dragon, that'll make waves) You're absolutely right though Alicia. Otohime and Fisher Tiger represent two extremes. One REFUSING to work within the system, the other refusing to work outside of it. Poor Jimbei is struggling to find the middle ground. Probably every day.

DaniDeFig

It's not a "long head" tribe thing. Per Oda, Strawberry stores his sadness in his head, so the more sadness he feels, the larger his head grows. Granted it would not be the first time he gave a joke answer that ended up having a wholly different actual explanation.

Seraphem

myosgard have my respect.

Melynx

I love Queen Otohime and Fisher Tiger. They are striving for a very hard and almost impossible dream and future for the children. As our beloved Montblanc Cricket said to Luffy, "They may call us stupid or laugh at us, but who cares, that's the Romance."

johnel

*Soose voice* Not cool, Dude!

Chamoun101

Hey, It's not That bad. Plus, considering Luffy's age, I think it fits pretty well.

Chris White

sadly though the english dub for luffy is so terrible it's borderline unwatchable. The dub does some things right, but luffy's voice just ain't it lol

Jasaniel

Neptune confirmed her haki a few episodes back, and the doctor seeing coby post marineford confirmed that this is what observation haki does. So no spoilers at all.

Jasaniel

545: I LOVE this episode!!! Specifically when shirahoshi summons the sea kings!! Also, the English dub scream for that celestial Worm is SOOOOO much more satisfying.

Chris White

No, king Neptune mentioned her powerful observation Haki in ep 540.

Pheonix

So small argument for Queen Otohime. Her argument isn't to invalidate the experiences of the slaves. She understands the pain they went through more so than anyone else. A small point that was raised at the beginning of the flashback is that her Observation Haki is extremely sensitive, to the point that she can feel other people's emotions. That's why she started crying in the flashback with Fisher Tiger and why she stated that she understood their anguish. It's not a matter of being condescending, she fully understands where they are coming from, However, her argument stands on 2 pillars: 1) Protect the children from your prejudice and let them experience humans first hand so that they make their own conclusions; 2) The cycle of hatred will always continue if nobody is ever willing to make a sacrifice and take the first step. Doesn't make it easy but that's what's necessary for change. I know it seems she can be quite naive but there's so much more to her character and I'm sure that will become clear as the arc progresses. Regardless, great video, can't wait for more.

Hope Alicia doesn't read the comments here. There's at least one blatant spoiler that's been posted.

Liberty

You know better than to spoil. You, specifically, have been told various times not to do so. Dude, c'mon.

Liberty

This is 2000% a spoiler, if you wanted to talk about future events there's a section in our discord to chat OP

UndeaditeJesse

Not really confirmed up to this point, 90% spoilery

UndeaditeJesse

I'm so glad Alicia doesn't read the comments anymore because Holy Shit. Great reaction, but there's a literal One Piece Discussion chat in the discord...

UndeaditeJesse

LOL bye!!

Reaver

Just some context Otohime has the same kind of Haki that Coby does, so when she says that she feels her pain that's what she means. Like their emotions are transmitted to her, and she is highly empathetic. Doesn't change how insensitive it comes off, and you can't ever feel someone's entire loved experience. Still it's context.

Evilyomi

If you want to be technical, kidnappers catch and put people up for auctions with the intent of slavery, and the Celestial Dragons buy them and brand them as slaves. But, semantics are semantics. Also, Otohime can feel the anguish of others with Observation Haki.

Vincent

One little detail I want to point out: Queen Otohime never asks the former slaves to forgive the Celestial Dragon, nor does she ever berate them for hating or wanting to kill him. Her ONLY drive is to protect the innocence of the children and to not taint their minds with hatred. I really respect her character for not patronizing them with morals and focusing only on what actually matters.

HappyDoodads

Just so you know Alicia, that's not just hair. That's literally the length of his head, just like the long arm tribes. There are tribes with Long heads. Oda is wild when it comes to creating his characters
