Straw Hat 611+612

Source on the "Oda wanted it", thing? Haki has been around since the beginning, from Shanks and The Lord of the Coast, to Dory and Brogy's visible auras as they sent the Straw Hats off, to Enel's Mantra. Oda is the type of man to plan things out, and this is exactly the type of thing that he would have accounted for. Without a direct source confirming that it's a retcon, that's just as much of a theory as the idea that the black armor is just there for the viewers, not something that's visible in-universe. Even then, the second theory honestly makes a lot more sense for continuity than the former does.

Moku

Not just "at this point" been like that since Alabasta.

Okoga

I remember when Smoker and Law VS Vergo was in like every "Top 10 anime fights" video that came out around this time.

PerfectYarn

bandana on xD i totally agree but the bandana argument always makes me crack up lol

Gingerrr

Can't wait for the call back to this episode later on lol

Sprocket

The black is just a visual for us so that we can see the haki, the characters don't see the color change.

Gurth-Quake

Guinea pigs in the pants? Please.. I watch WTFIWWY, Nash wishes guinea pigs were the worst things people have put in their pants.

PSA to Alicia to quit the powerscale dickriding, this is one of the most common and the most obnoxious anime fan traits thats ever come into being and its way too stupid for someone like Alicia who is usually hyper perceptive. People see a character that they percieve to be so much weaker than one of the protagonists that literally ANY amount of back and forth between them they see as bad writing or padding and will shit on it like the protag was beaten within a inch of their life. For one thing Monet isn't that weak, and shes clearly decently skilled even beyond her DF which being a Logia is strong by default. Secondly and most importantly, Zoro didn't even come close to struggling, bro was using two swords instead of three, didn't pull off a single attack and didn't even bother putting the bandana on. Even if not for the actual explanation in the anime, sometimes a fight is just a fight, its not indicative that Zoro is weaker just because he doesn't decapitate his opponent within 2 seconds, its just how he fights.

Lewd Angel

i personally think basic armament is invisible which is what is used to be able to interact with logias, and armament: hardening is a condensed armor technique used.

Santi

I guess Haki's visibility isn't that consistent. I kind of assumed it was like Nen or Stands, where only certain people can see it, and we as the audience only become able to see it when the point of view character can. Maybe this is contradicted at another time, but even Rayleigh said armament haki was like "an invisible suit of armor" when he explained it to Luffy. But you're right, there are times where you can only tell it's there because a person is grabbing a Logia user. Maybe because it just looks cool when someone grabs smoke for seemingly no reason, like we're seeing it through the eyes of the common bystanders who are standing around going, "He grabbed smoke?! How?!"

Lexi

Hardening is a technique of Armament Haki. Base Armament is invisible

Memento Forever

It was explained in the manga (ch 1067), but I'm not saying it for spoilers. However, be careful about sharing "theories" about something we literally just saw, since you could unintentionally give hints or spoilers.

leviathan_13

Yeah, but I don't think that's a "fact". That's how readers interpreted it. The internet is full of "Oda said" or "Oda wanted" myths. If I'm wrong, you are welcome to share the source.

leviathan_13

The thing about armament haki, was that Oda wanted it originally to be inviseable, but it was hard for readers to know when haki was used, so he retconned it, and made it visible sometimes. example when Luffy punched the Kraken the crew commented on his hand being black.

The_real_illya_enjoyer

Kinda crazy how you accepted that Tashigi had haki because Smoker said it, but when luffy confirmed him, sanji, and zoro had it you didn't. Not a big deal just interesting how it was the same in both situations.

SpartanManJDOGG

at this point in the story the manga is WAY faster. single panels become several minutes in the anime. Also Toei zooms in on any women even if they were in the background further stretching out the run time

Cole Savoie

11:25 It isn't explained yet in the manga or anime why it was considered a failure but personally I think it was a failure because it doesn't give the user a hybrid form and it likely won't reincarnate into another fruit after death

Trevor Appel

I do love Monet and her aesthetic is great how she is a harpy regularly but a Yuki-Onna when she is made of snow

Icy

Well the whole thing with armemenr is the black coating is the basic but you can just put haki in your hands to touch a Logia. The black is when you are using it more intently.

Icy

48:40 That's just how Zoro is, he rarely starts a fight at full strength. He usually starts off in defense mode to observe

Cvillain626

No way she didn't read the subtitles throughout that entire Monet v Zorro rant 😭

King of flames

Im sorry that you're sick and I hope you feel better...but sick hysterical chaos Alicia is pretty great too xD

Cvillain626

The Gas-Gas man would be a pro at GASlighting lol

Ryan Searle

Luffy has no idea how wrong he is.

Sam Marsh

people spoiling there

Fenronin (Dorian Dubourg)

headasscannon, the only reason Zoro isn't 1shotting Monet here is because she basically turned into one of those bird enemies from Elden Ring and we all know those are a pain in the ass to deal with

nick

Monet was using ice picks, not kebab skewers. Some skewers can have similar handles, but ice picks generally have them more. It also makes sense with her having the Snow-Snow Fruit.

Koga Wolfe

Catching the cold shoulder and feet was just spot on. But how could you miss the frostbite, it was so obvious.

GeeksFTW

i can't wait for her to find out why that man made devil fruit is a failure

Royce

I always imagined that the darkening aspect of armament is demonstrating advanced useage, and something only other haki users can see. That is why pre-time skip Luffy, and viewers, can't see anything.

GeeksFTW

I think Alicia's underestimating how strong and skilled Monet is. I mean, she was sent to protect Caeser, and she's a Logia user.

Anzac-A1

Monet: Literally on screen pointing out that Zoro is only being defensive against her. Alicia: "Why da fuck he not win yet?" (I'm not complaining, just found it funny Alicia interrupted the answer by asking the question.)

Johnathon

"Black haki really is black. It's not all black. Some of it is." Uh... I don't know how to tell you this, but what you're describing is a visual inconsistency which is exactly what I said/agreed with Alicia on, so how about you "stop confusing people" lmao. Also, it's not that deep. Even if I did, it's not like getting the explanation for how Haki is shown slightly wrong is going to ruin the plot of the show for her, so relax.

Erica Wilder Boulter

Armament Haki only started being black after we learned it existed. Because before that, none of our protagonists knew about it.

Anzac-A1

It's not just visualization. Black haki really is black. It's not all black. Some of it is. I could bring up examples from later on that make it super obvious. Though really the fact that it's also black in the manga should be enough. They never indicated it was "visualization". Stop confusing people.

rando

You're right about the visual indicators of Armament Haki being kind of inconsistent, but I guess it's basically the animators way of trying to make a scene look more dynamic and cool. Conqueror's Haki will also get a new visual indicator too (outside of that typical "gust of powerful wind" effect) and it's just as inconsistent lol.
