Alicia talking about her "addiction" to one piece is such a moment like I'm sure everyone who watches has been like this when they are in the bingeing phase of one piece but like damn downside is when you get caught up your really looking for something to scratch that itch till the next episode, hence why the movies exist (plus Alicia helping with the content while they are on hiatus from the current stuff)

2024-11-04 12:25:02 +0000 UTCDude, he is against one of the strongest people on the island. Only an admiral, Law, Mingo, one or two in Mingos crew and some in his own crew are stronger than Trebol. But more importantly, the only times he has been shown to not be scared is when he know he can win or he is lying. He will always go above and beyond for the crew, but when has he ever g one on a frontal assault before this? Arlong park it was his crew that started the fight, he shot from the back. Arabasta, he was ready to run away, until Ms. Merry Christmas insulted Luffy. In the Skypeia arc he was either running away, protecting someone in the crew or being forced into the situation by the crew. Enies Lobby was about saving Robin. Thriller Bark, he only took on Perona, because it was that or the crew is done for. Then a time skip training arc. First confident fight was on Fishman Island, where he was significantly stronger than his opponent. But then it's back to no fights, losing fights or running away on the next island, EXCEPT when Cesar attacked him, Nami and the kids. At what point on that list has he attacked head first against someone significantly stronger than himself that wasn't in order to save a friend? THIS IS LITERALLY HIS FIRST TIME DOING THAT. THAT'S THE POINT. He for the first time in the series is in a fight that he has to win, but had no personal reason to take. THIS is his growth. Him being a coward now IS PART of the character arc.
I'm following way too many nsfw accounts to use a name here
2024-10-25 15:21:39 +0000 UTCWhat does 2.5 years have to do with anything? He's just a regular dude in a world where people can cut through buildings, freeze oceans and , oh yeah, make everyone who's ever known you forget your existence by turning you into a toy slave. If you wouldn't be scared then there's something wrong with you.

2024-10-20 21:50:21 +0000 UTCHe's a coward who wants to be brave. By definition, he's going to need to fall down so that he can get back up. That's _exactly_ why incidents like this and like Water 7 are necessary. It's called "Showing, not Telling". Oda is showing us his failures as he grows braver and stronger. He's not on any thin ice whatsoever, he's exactly where he needs to be. He would be a far worse character if he were suddenly consistently brave, even after the time skip. Would Brook's character arc have been any better if Oda had him reconnect with Laboon off screen during the time skip, and he just told us that all was well? What if Rayleigh had told Robin everything that she needed and wanted to know? Maybe while telling us what the One Piece is, while he's at it? No. That would be "Telling, not Showing", and it's a very poor storytelling technique. Usopp is getting braver, but its his choices and morality that needs to be examined, which is exactly what was happening here. He's not a Gary Stu, nor is he Luffy or Zoro. He's _Usopp_. He can't display the bravery that he ended up showing here, if his cowardice isn't also shown in contrast - especially when he, personally, has every reason to want to get away. This isn't his war, he just got roped into it because he told lies to his captors.

2024-10-19 01:18:35 +0000 UTCI'm not sure why people are suddenly expecting Usopp to be this brave and capable warrior. I feel like those who are criticizing him here, including Alicia, have a fundamental misunderstanding of his character. Usopp, at his core, is a coward who wishes to be strong. He's not Luffy, with an indominable spirit, he's this average kid who grew up in a peaceful setting, playing and daydreaming about being this strong figure, but ultimately just leaving it at that, until Kuro threatened Kaya, and Luffy saved the day. Yes, he's stronger and more confident now than he was when he left home, but he's still growing toward what he wants to be. Remember, he didn't want to be here. He didn't think that they were going to be tied up in a full on revolution, the plan was to drop Caesar off on an island while Luffy and the others destroyed a factory, and then they'd escape and move on, hopefully with minimal retribution. He _never_ expected to be on the forefront of a full on coup, expected to help pull off one of the most critical missions. Besides, he's not a front line fighter, in the first place. Not only that, but keep in mind what he knows, at this moment. Half the crew, along with their ship, are just gone, being chased by Big Mom's crew. Ergo, they don't have a solid escape plan from the island if things go south. An Admiral is present, and seems to be on the side of Doxflamingo. CP0 are also present, and likely a threat as well. He and Robin were captured by a tribe of tiny people who were going to do who-knows-what to them (as far as he knew at the time), and his penchant for lies managed to both buy them some time, and lay the pressure of leading this all important mission right as his feet. Anyone who expected him to act any differently here is not only not paying attention, but they're also just reacting without thinking. He wants to be a great warrior, but he's not one yet. He's going to have failures of character and morality like this, because he still needs to grow into greatness. He's not perfect, so stop expecting that from him.

2024-10-18 06:13:13 +0000 UTCWhat does that have to do with him questioning Thunder Solder's capabilities? As far as he knows, he _is_ just a one legged toy, because that's the truth of the matter. He knows that the Soldier is a human, but he doesn't know who that human is - and even if he did, what about Kyros as Thunder Soldier inspires confidence that he can defeat Doffy? He's a toy who could be any average joe off the street, who's strength is limited to a tin body, and who can't do anything to actually make himself stronger.
Moku
2024-10-18 05:54:10 +0000 UTCUsopp literally knows the toys are humans too. SO why would he call him "just a one legged toy"

2024-10-16 21:01:10 +0000 UTCTo be fair, I agree that Usopp at this point of the arc is very frustrating to watch. But at the same time, consider this is the toughest opponent usopp has ever been faced with while pretty much on his own. The only tougher opponent he has faced up to now is Kizaru, and that was a different situation because the whole crew was there and Zoro's life was in danger.

2024-10-08 10:00:26 +0000 UTCI feel like whoever at Toei was handling this arc just hates Usopp, because the padding they did for runtime makes him look so bad. Like not only did Robin instantly grab Leo before he even entered the room after the whole fly thing, they never even got the grape into the bowl in the manga, Sugar notices them as soon as they enter the room

2024-10-08 07:15:42 +0000 UTCI've seen at least one other reaction channel agree with Alicia completely on Ussop. It does seem like a regression from Fishman Island. And the anime pacing drags it out.

2024-10-08 04:14:56 +0000 UTCIt's hard being an Usopp fan. It took me a long time to stop disliking him after Water 7. Then this arc made me dislike him again. Now, he's fine. Just fine.

2024-10-08 01:02:17 +0000 UTCit sounds like you haven't fully understood who ussop is this whole time hearing your commentary on this episode but it's understandable. the main point here is that ussop isn't facing a side character or a normal person from a crew. He is up against THE RIGHT HAND MAN of a crew along with a POWERFUL fighter. He was always a coward who would fight with hit and run tactics. no where to run, no where to hide.

2024-10-08 00:00:52 +0000 UTCThis is at least partially on the Anime for drawing this out and kind of over emphasizing Usopp being a coward more then the manga did.... but even then, yes, this is a low point for him.

2024-10-07 18:36:32 +0000 UTCUssop is useful he is capable but he is also a massive crybaby, dude is giving up when things still look promising, what's going to happen when things actually go bad, like I know what will happen here but it does annoy me that he is being scared right now as thing's weren't that bad before trebol showed back up.

2024-10-07 18:32:48 +0000 UTCA big piece the anime doesn't make clear is Robins influence on Usopp. When he’s forced to forget about her and the steps he’s made due to Enis Lobby, he’s loses that courage.

2024-10-07 17:41:55 +0000 UTCAbout Usopp. He can be divisive, won't deny that. The anime is absolutely not doing him favors though. Showing him trembling in his socks is easy filler time, something the animators desperately need. Sure, the big point of the time skip was to make people more capable for the New World. Usopp got buff, acquired new tech and re-invented his sniping style around the pop-green. He's definitely stronger. But I definitely want to see him grow braver on screen as a part of his big dream. Not as a side note of the time skip.
Hynkka
2024-10-07 15:46:29 +0000 UTCI’m going to be honest I have never liked Usop. I tolerate him because he brings the fact he is an ordinary human in a crew of super powered people and monsters, but this arc made me loathe him

2024-10-07 14:28:09 +0000 UTCThe issue lies more with the anime's portrayal than with Oda. In the manga, Usopp's fear and eventual courage are balanced, making this a strong character progression moment. Unfortunately, the anime stretches out his cowardice with extra scenes, which makes him seem more stagnant than he actually is. Such issues happen regularly in the post-timeskip anime, which often tries to fill time and ends up leaning on character clichés that Oda carefully avoided or limited in the manga to highlight character development.

Serith
2024-10-07 14:13:37 +0000 UTCWith the drawn-out pacing and added 'coward scene' fillers, the anime made Usopp look way worse than he did in the manga. In the manga, his fear is present but balanced by quicker, more decisive acts of bravery.

2024-10-07 12:07:54 +0000 UTCRespectfully, that's just an internet rant with no basis that was born out of frustration from this part of the plot and sticked to this day mixed with different expectations of the "post timeskip". Understandably so too, because when you read this stuff weekly, you have to wait a long time to see the whole picture. Character "progression" is also not the same as "character development" and Usop has both either way.

2024-10-07 11:46:47 +0000 UTCUsopp is revered by the fandom ... seems like Oda really wants him to be the scared coward.... he's been given no character progression even though he's done so many amazing things - like in alabasta, enies lobby etc... It's hard to care about a character that the writers don't care for...
