5k 50 years ago is equal to about 30k today. Keep in mind that minimum wage 50 years ago was $2.10. 55 years ago, it was $1.45. When the Boomer generation started it was less than $1. The problem isn't that things were cheaper, they weren't, the problem is that the dollar became worth less and less as time went on. It's time to put the reddit fueled hatred of older generations behind us. Keep in mind that the redditors who started all this crap about how easy it was for Boomers did so because they hated that their dads didn't approve of their pony porn addiction, and they weren't allowed to just sit on their computers and goon all day.
