Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring P3

THAT'S THE END?

Comments

I know this comment is late, but I like to imagine that during Aragorn’s reign, he commissioned a statue or memorial to Boromir, and years later, Aragorn and his son walk by it. Aragorn’s son asks his dad “Who is that, father?” Aragorn answers “A brave and noble man, whom I had the honour to fight alongside, and the first man of Gondor to see me as his Captain, his King.”

Richard

I don't know if someone has commented these already, but here are some easter eggs for this part: -When Aragorn deflects the knife, that knife was meant to miss, and they would make it seem like it was closer than it actually was. The actor for Lurtz (the main Uruk-hai) messed up the throw, and Viggo Mortensen had to actually deflect the knife. That was a steel prop that would have hit him in the face if he hadn't deflected it. There are a number of cool easter egg with him in these movies. -The boats they're in are enchanted never to capsize. When they send Boromir over the falls, they know that the boat won't flip, so his body will be able to return home to Gondor (which is downstream).

Some of the details about Hobbits that aren't really addressed in the trilogy are their, particular advantages. They talk about their shortcomings a fair bit. First of all, Hobbits aren't stupid. They would be best described as simple. Got given to duplicity. But one of the most important things is, that among all the races in Middle Earth, the are the least magical. They are, also, a race of, almost universally innocent and good people. They desire a simple, joyous and peacful life. These two things are why Hobbits seem to be the most immune to the Ring's influence. There are few desires and it can latch onto. And, as someone mentioned in a previous comment, the less power you have, the less influence the Ring has. And the less talked about traits are more physical. Hobbits are naturally very stealthy. Being a race that is smaller than almost everything, and always going barefoot, allowsa them to be able to sneak past almost anything. Elves are some of the most perceptive creatures in Middle Eart, and yet Sam, Merry and Pippon were able to sneak into Elrond's secret council undetected. THey are that sneaky. Also, almost every Hobbit learns to throw from a young age. Hobbits have a wicked accuracy with thrown stones, and surprising strength in their arms. In one of the books, it mentioned that, in the Shire, most birds, squirrels and rabbits learn to flee the moment they see a Hobbit bend down to pick up a stone.

Samuel Vincent

A thing to know is Galadriel was basically exiled from LOTR version of heaven. So her passing the test was her being told she is now welcome to come home to heaven "head west" rather than diminish which is Elf way of kinda just fading away and becoming spirits.

Random3x

Another bit that is significant is Gimli asked for only a single hair as he deemed asking for anything more would be too greedy. While Feanor in his arrogance all but demanded three hairs from her. So the fact he asked for One but got Three really shows she could read Gimli's heart well and see he was as you said worthy of what she denied what is arguably one of the greatest elves to have ever existed.

Random3x

Aragorn sang: Through Rohan over fen and field where the long grass grows The West Wind comes walking, and about the walls it goes. ‘What news from the West, O wandering wind, do you bring to me tonight? Have you seen Boromir the Tall by moon or by starlight? ‘I saw him ride over seven streams, over waters wide and grey, I saw him walk in empty lands until he passed away Into the shadows of the North, I saw him then no more. The North Wind may have heard the horn of the son of Denethor, ‘O Boromir! From the high walls westward I looked afar, But you came not from the empty lands where no men are.’ Then Legolas sang: From the mouths of the Sea the South Wind flies, from the sandhills and the stones, The wailing of the gulls it bears, and at the gate it moans. ‘What news from the South, O sighing wind, do you bring to me at eve? Where now is Boromir the Fair? He tarries and I grieve. ‘Ask not of me where he doth dwell – so many bones there lie, On the white shores and the dark shores under the stormy sky, So many have passed down Anduin to find the flowing Sea. Ask of the North Wind news of them the North Wind sends to me!’ ‘O Boromir! Beyond the gate the seaward road runs south, But you came not with the wailing gulls from the grey sea’s mouth’. Then Aragorn sang again: From the Gate of the Kings the North Wind rides, and past the roaring falls, And clear and cold about the tower its loud horn calls. ‘What news from the North, O mighty wind, do you bring to me today? What news of Boromir the bold? For he is long away.’ ‘Beneath Amon Hen I heard his cry. There many foes he fought, His cloven shield, his broken sword, they to the water brought. His head so proud, his face so fair, his limbs they laid to rest, And Rauros, golden Rauros-falls, bore him upon its breast. ‘O Boromir! The Tower of Guard shall ever northward gaze, To Rauros, golden Rauros-falls, until the end of days.'

cool ending

Gildarts1#fan

Boromir is far and away my favorite LOTR character. He is the *perfect* summation of the race of Man. Flawed, power hungry, and of course he is not immune to the draw of evil, but deep down at his heart he is honorable, courageous, kind and compassionate. Willing to do what is right for those he loves at the very end.

Simulacrae

You missed the outro ''May it be'' by Enya, its a masterpiece

Mikey Cyrus

Alicia is never late, nor is she early. She post precisely when she means to

Vincent

Please do The Two Towers soon Alicia! I think i speak for many when I say... many of your audience are desperate for it

M

I do as well. Even thinking about it gets me choked up.

Nick DiRubio

"I would have followed you, my brother. My captain. My king." I weep every time at this scene. Even thinking about it chokes me up.

Nick DiRubio

I can't wait to see you react to the next two films. All three of these films make me cry like crazy T.T .

Morgasborga

Other people in the comments have stated it, but Galadriel gifting Gimli three of her hairs actually was that deep, the lore of Tolkien's universe is vast.

Seth

If you like these you will definitely like the hobbit movies as well.

Matthew Harms

More movies , need

Saint Vakos

You’re fans are calling for more LOTR

Yaboi7117

I honestly preferred his character in the film, as while yes, it does make him a bit less brave up front, I much prefer the growth he has to accept his fate, as opposed to being all for it from the beginning. He honestly feels 1 dimensional at times in the book, here he at least feels more human.

Dwain Kowalske

I loved every moment of this! I won't spoil anything, but I've got a feeling you will love the next LOTR movie even more, and I can't wait to see you watch it!

Arian Khalil

Technically giving of locks of hair is a old tradition. In the world wars for example, soldiers would carry locks of their Wife's/Girlfriend's hair. You are correct lore wise as well.

Zip The Turtle

This has been a joy to watch. I look forward to the next two movies, and if trends hold, 6 videos.

Douglas Richardson

Here I sit VIBRATING until the next set is posted.... I'm so fuckin hyped.

Nakhtichaos

I didn't say if it was wrong or not. Just pointing out the differences between Theatrical and Extended, since Alicia said she wouldn't be able to tell what was added.

Some Guy on the Internet

Sitting here at 8 am, kinda drunk cause i keep crazy people hours and wake up at midnight, crying like a bitch when Boromir dies like i do every year when i watch the trilogy, watching you watch it is my second time this year. I forget every time how emotional this scene gets me.

Joseph Van Noort

Evenly balanced…as all things should be

KodeShikou

The oldest of the elves, the ones who have been around from near the beginning like Galadriel, are stated in lore to to have been taught by and in some respects to have surpassed the Valar. The same Valar who shaped the world and that the Maiar like Sauron serve. In fact one such elf, Fingolfin was a master of the sword who dueled Morgoth, Sauron's master, and injured him 7 times leaving him with a permanent limp. Galadriel is weaker than Sauron overall but in her specialty, power over the mind, she likely surpasses him and empowered/corrupted by the ring she would likely dominate almost every mind in middle earth.

Joel Sasmad

Calling out Aragorn for being afraid of his lineage is entirely wrong, though. It's 100% against characterisation of Aragorn in the book. In fact, a lot of what they did with Aragorn in the film was different from the book, to give him a more conventional "character arc", which is a shame. I hate Aragorn being reduced to this.

Toasted Toad

DVD extras were epicl FOUR commentary tracks (one for director, one for the actors, and two technical ones (can't remember who from, but they were both very interesting). Add it all up, and you've got days worth of viewing! And that's even without the "making of" stuff.

Toasted Toad

He suffered a lot from those prosthetics - he was allergic to them.

Toasted Toad

I loved that attention to detail. So many directors would just have ignored it. Only a true fan of the books would have understood the importance of its inclusion. Elves are truly different from mortals, and it's not just being immortal and looking pretty.

Toasted Toad

No. Galadriel is only an elf. Sauron is a Maiar - a much more powerful being. She's a powerful elf, but Sauron is Gandalf on crack. Gandalf is also a Maiar, but his power is severely limited on Middle Earth - a condition he agreed to in order to help out there. Sauron has no such restriction, and was more powerful anyway.

Toasted Toad

LOTR definitely had a big impact on RWBY. The lyrics to one of the songs from season 1 (I May Fall to be specific) has some subtle references to a scene from The Return of The King.

Matt Clark

I just pray Alicia finishes the series before some troll tries and spoils things

HornHero

One of the extended scenes is Bilbo's narration at the beginning. In the theatrical cut, right after the Prologue, it cuts right to Frodo by the tree. They cut out the scene where Aragorn is singing. They removed Gimli's gift. They also removed the conversation between Aragorn and Boromir where the latter calls out the former for being afraid of his lineage. Also, most of the sets are filmed using practical effects. Very little CGI. When it comes to establishing shots, they would use smaller models, but when filming the interior of the locations, they would build the actual place/set. And they used forced perspectives for characters. For example, the Hobbits are much shorter than the other races in Middle-earth (usually around 3'6), so they used forced perspectives to make characters like Gandalf convincingly taller than someone like Frodo. And yes, the entire trilogy was simultaneously filmed in New Zealand. Peter Jackson filmed the whole trilogy before Fellowship even released in theaters. If you ever go to New Zealand, you can visit Hobbiton.

Some Guy on the Internet

She is the only one who got the same "shots" as Sauron... The sudden flashes of her eyes and then hearing her voice and the magic whispers... When I saw that as a teen I KNEW she was at that S tier level even with no ring... THEN THAT scene happened. Of what she would become if she chose the path Sauron went down... Anyway as grew up. I am into dommy mommies now ! (JK JK I am not that degenerate YET!)

Azi

So yeah. Galadriel is canonically a powerful psychic with mental powers surpassing even Sauron. The ring amplifies the powers of the bearer, meaning that in the hands of Galadriel her mental control would be way worse of a problem than even Sauron getting the ring back.

Joel Sasmad

its fine as long as you dont spoil stuff

callme.NuKe

27:30 about Galadriels hair. It seems like a weird gesture to gift hair but it makes a lot of sense. You see. Galadriel is ancient. Older than the sun and moon. Before those were created there were two giant trees, silver and golden, which were the light sources of the world. Those trees were destroyed by an evil god who was Saurons boss (think Saurons times 1000). It is said that the silver and golden light of the trees was captured in Galadriels hair and still shines from it to this day. Also a very powerful elven smith named Feanor asked for her hair because he wanted to use it in his smithing work and she refused because she saw darkness in his heart. That elf was like the best smith the elves ever had and created three powerful artifacts (think of the rings of power but way more powerful). So Galadriel giving her hair to Gimli who is not even an elf but a dwarf after refusing Feanors request is a very big deal. And also shows that she deems Gimlis character worthy of such a gift.

Levi Ackerman

how do we feel about lore dumps here? I'm trying so hard too resist

hiddennijafist .

I guarantee you there was some influence from this movie for the RWBY scene you mention. Several of the writers are huge Lord of the Rings fans, so it would not surprise me.

Dwain Kowalske

Trivia: at 48:12 in this video, when the Uruk-hai throws the knife at Aragorn, the Uruk-hai actor wasn't supposed to *actually* throw the knife at him; he did so by accident, and Viggo Mortensen *actually* deflected it on the fly.

Silvia Dragoness

Plus in his facial prosthetics it cut down on his vision so he didn't have more than tunnel vision.

Hhound42

The extended edition is the original intended version. They were forced to cut it down for theaters.

Starchaser

I'd never watched the extended version before... it was nice to see. They essentially added extra lore in there and for example the scene with Boromir trying to take the ring was slightly extended. The early part with the hobbits had more detail about them and other details.

Kinji

I sincerely hope you continue the trilogy it only gets better as it goes on! Also RWBY TRUAMA! It will never get better.

Chris Ward

One of my favorite little details was when they were walking over the mountain, and everyone was waist-deep in snow, having to practically dig their way through it... meanwhile, Legolas is so light-footed that he walked on top of the snow without leaving even a footprint. Elves!

tinyMEEPS

It'd be very unusual, but I really wouldn't mind a BTS reaction for the LOTR trilogy, honestly.

FreedomPuppy

some of the greatest behind the scenes of any series

Rhodair

I always laugh this part. The actor playing Gimli is like a fairly thick 6foot2 guy, who said himself ''He wasn't good at holding back''. Those stuntmen earned that salary.

Le Karibou

If anyone ever says that about the wiser choice they are wrong Sam is the OG, and you have summed him up perfectly

Andy me

Damn

Fobbles

Alicia, Can I have one hair from your crimson head?

RylerRay

It was indeed inspired. So inspired in fact, that most of the races and monsters were ripped straight from LotR, name, lore, and all. They were eventually sued by the Tolkien Estate and had to change things enough to be legally distinct.

Blackbaldrik

I'm sure someone else will also mention it, but regarding the fight Choreo: The actor for Gimli was actually laying into the stuntment with the axe in his scenes. The Uruks had actual armor and the axe was blunt enough that he just shmacked the closest orc and moved on to the next.

Crescent Method

No. In the book he died with his shield broken, his sword shattered, and ended up mortally wounded after taking a VOLLEY of arrows from at least 70+ Orcs. He was defending Merry and Pippin for at least 100 of them and took out 20 before that though. We aren’t given exact numbers unfortunately.

DoomlordSteve

He would not have. In the book Boromir died with a broken shield and a shattered sword and 20 Orc bodies strewn around him. We don’t get a description of the fight but it’s implied that he only stopped fighting after he took a volley of arrows. Much like the Standing Death of Benkei in Japanese folklore.

DoomlordSteve

Didn’t matter. In the book he died with a broken shield and a shattered sword. And dozen(s)? Of arrow sticking out of him. Boromir was a beast and died a warriors death.

DoomlordSteve

So the different movie cuts. They filmed... soooo much. Honestly it was a struggle to fit the films into three movies. But in its day, doing a three series trilogy was not very common. They took a leap allowing them to produce three films for a series. I cannot state enough how everybody should watch the behind the scenes and making of for these films. They have hours explaining locations, sets, costume and so much more. It's beautiful. So the reason that the extended is so long and yet feels so abrupt to end is because they paced it so well, trimmed for theatrical release or not, the film flows smoothly. The third film is roughly 3 hours even trimmed down. The regular DVD set back in the day has a disc one and a disc two. These films... are my comfort movies. I still get tears, the music wakes something in me and it feels like home. I adore seeing people experience it and soak it in the first time.

Meddaya

They will look to his coming from the White Tower, but he will not return. Poem "Lament for Boromir" written by Tolkien and performed by Clamavi De Profundis - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LjPxuY9djhw

Deagor

Filmed in New Zealand and parts of some sets are still up as tourist attractions.

Hhound42

I don't need to imagine, I was there lol. Light gasps "Aww..." Hushed "No way."

Okoga

Literally no actress in existence who could accurately portray her as Tolkien intended.

Captain-Kerfuffle

Feanor straight up smoldering in the halls of Mandos rn. 3 hairs, 3!

Seroili

Galadriel, was in fact, "THAT FINE". Canonically speaking. Her hairs was one of her emphasized characteristics, something about it glowing idk. Unfortunately they weren't able to transmit that very well in the movie. But you can somehow deduce that from the fact that even a hating dwarf would put her above any jewel under earth.

Júlio So

I genuinely had so much fun watching alicia's reaction to this! Hearing about film making intricacies occasionally while getting a first time watcher's perspective was very entertaining and now I only have one problem. I wish the other movies were uploaded already :(

Jasaniel

Nowhere, in any other book, movie, or even game, have I ever seen a character as goated as Sam. He's the true hero of these movies. Frodo is great, of course, and I wouldn't want anyone else to be the ring-bearer, but without Sam, he would not have gone far. Sam is kind, loyal, intelligent, caring, and he's the one keeping Frodo from getting corrupted by the Ring.

KeterLordFR

I was not planing on watching this whole movie again tonight, but I am glad I did.

NebulaNyx

fun fact: Sam is based of batmen private (militery servant) that served under tolken who was an officer in ww1, he considered him to be be superior to himself, and the best friend a man could ask for.

MICHAEL Thomas

D&D campaign is right, I'm pretty sure D&D was inspired by the LOTR. In that, the Fellowship is the prototype of every party, ever, the idea you need a mix of different species, classes, and you dungeon diving and sometimes have boss battles...the first book of LOTR is, in this way, the prototype of every campaign ever.

hemahemahema

first of all!! Galadriel canonically IS THAT FINE! Gimli is not the first to ask for a strand of golden hair from her and she always said no, so her giving gimli 3 strands is lore wise a huge friggin deal, they go into it more in the books

Noah Benden

I was 11 when I saw this in theatres and I think the guy in front of me might not have known it was a trilogy, because when it ended he had the same reaction and said "WHAT THE HELL, THEY DIDN'T EVEN GET TO THE MOUNTAIN??"

Patrick Waldeck

Side question: is there any chance of watching "The Hobbit" somewhere down the line? It's the story of Bilbo baggins!

Bolo The Wise

I get that the setting of Middle-earth is supposed to be beautiful, but DAMN they padded this movie with a lot of wide shots and orcs running.

Vincent

Film nerd Alicia is peak honestly. Love hearing about camera angles, makeup choices, and occasional setting comments!

Bolo The Wise

“Gondor has no king, Gondor needs no King.” “I would’ve followed you my brother… my captain…. My King.”

Wanbli Wakua

I don’t think it’s ever stated explicitly in the movie, but the reason the elves are leaving is that they are going to a place called Valinor, where the Godlike immortal Valar reside. The Valar were the first borns of the god Eru Iluvatar, and helped shape middle earth and created its various races first of which were the elves.

Caster the Gravedigger

"This movie should won so many awards" Enters meme: well yes, but actually no

Faroth

Sam for me is the main character, not frodo, change my mind. Funfact: in the books, since gandalf left to research the ring when bilbo left the house to the point he return to say frodo to left the town, time passed by longer, like 30 years or so. Sam, merry and pippin were but childs during bilbo's bday party, and frodo was already on his 30s (his bday is the same day as bilbo) so frodo is like 30 something years older than sam, pippin and merry, which is the actual reason on why they call him MISTER FRODO, since he is literall a old man for them, but since he was the new ring bearer, he didnt age physically that fast, just like bilbo Sam is a real one and he ever will be Funfact: wizards smoke with pipes so they dont burn their beards

Faroth

also the gift of her hair made him immune to the dwarvish greed for Gold

Vincent

Since I don't see anyone else mentioning it: Hilariously, Sam is overjoyed to get rope in the book, as it was the one thing he'd forgotten to pack and has been very irritated at himself for it (I also HIGHLY recommend reading the books once you finish the movies, or at least a synopsis of changes, love the Jackson films to death but there's a few massive characterization changes that aren't like... bad, but make it REALLY interesting to see the other way among some other events that simply did not make it into the movies)

Chaxinitus

Samwise might not be the most powerful being in fiction but when it comes to being a real one you do not beat Samwise. Period.

KingofYokai

Finally i can comment (problems with my bank make it so i cant renew the sub till now) Funfacts not developed in the movie but did in the books(the silmarillion, isnt a spoiler): The Gift of Galadriel to gimli: in the book, legolas smile when gimli told him about the gift and say nothing, he laugh alone to this because all the elves know the story of Galadriel and Feanor. A noble elf. A warrior, a hero. He ask her not once or twice but 3 times for a single hair of her, arguing that he, a hero, must have at least that from her, and the lady elf deny such request all the three diferent times since she saw into his heart, which was filled with lust of power and greed... but gimli? He was not flirting, he, a dwarf, left behind his proud and say directly that she was a beauty person, in and out, so he actually was being a nice man saying to her she was beauty, not to flirt, not to power, just admiring her for what he saw on her, asking nothing more and just if she can... and to 'insult' Feanor... she gave him THREE... one for each time Faenor ask the same with greed of power... (the hair can be used for magic spells to control her) so legolas is actually laughing to an inner joke between elves, and the damn elf will never tell gimli, because that would ruin the gesture... and for that gesture, that was the moment he realized that dwarves and elves can actually be friends if they can put their prides aside for a second

Faroth

This is at least the second time Sean Astin was drowning on screen. Lonesome Dove is a great mini-series in case anyone likes westerns. Great cast.

Dale Cooper

"We are holding them of well without any casualties, no ones been injured yet" -Alicia 2024 End of Fellowship of the Ring

Luka Aleksijevic

Can you imagine being in the theatre of the lord of the rings when it came out and the ending comes and the whole room goes WHAT?!?!?!

Fobbles

I only now just realized that Boromir didn’t have his shield because he was going to get firewood and to follow Frodo. If he did have his shield he could have blocked those arrows… :(

Fobbles

Y know that mighta been a dirtier cliffhanger than empire I remember feeling not pleased in the theaters either didn't know I was signing up for a trilogy

Daniel Gonzalez

Both Feanor and Gimli asked for it so they could work the hair into jewels. But Feanor was vain and full of himself, while Gimli was humble and righteous. She gave him three as a "eff you" to Feanor, whonended up crafting the three Silmaril

Nikolaus Trixner

lol why is sean bean alway typr casted to be strong death

AonixGhostlyQ

One day, in twenty years, when they remake One Piece as a movie series:

Moku

Part of the reason why was because the director kept giving speeches to them about how bloodthirsty and merciless the Uruk-Hai should be right before every shoot, which always greatly concerned the actors and stunt people who had to get beaten up by them.

unknown organism

To explain the thing about the three hairs that gimli recieved, long story short some full of himself, but highly accomplished being sought out the same thing, but did it partially to own a piece of her as a trophy or the like. Gimli however didn't seek that but truly admired her beauty. Legolas knew the story and that is why he smiled when gimli got three hairs as a sign of his purity.

Jacket

Cate Blanchett voices the monkey in the Guillermo del Toro Pinocchio movie

Yagi di Hoshi

Something very important about the ring's abilities. It can manipulate you through your desires be them good or bad. But Hobbits usually have everything they want. Because their simple they don't desire more than good food, weed, and drinks. None of which the ring can give them. So it makes itself out to be something important something precious. The issue with men is the ring can't do much through them either but it can manipulate them easier. It's the SUPER powerful people you want to keep the ring away from. Like the wizards and magic elves. Even the eagals who helped Gandalf are magical and should be kept far from the ring.

Alicia Barkley

i was hoping she was gonna see that one 'dead' orc lift up his head when the group went to boromir its really funny, his head lifts up to see what they doing even though he was suppose to be dead, thats in the extended not the regular one i think. its also very easy to miss i had to pause and rewind it cause i missed it lol

james blaire

That's so sweet wth

Leticia

"Fun" fact. The actors for the Urik Hai got really really into their roles and apparently scared several crew members with how they where acting. When the orc leader is fighting Aragorn, he wasn't supposed to throw the knife at Aragorn as it was a real dagger and could have done some serious damage if Aragorns actor hadn't deflected it. But the accident ended up looking too badass to leave out

Spacefrog

Think about the fact that you just watched a three and a half hour movie and you didn't expect the end to come so soon. 200 minutes of movie and not a minute of filler.

Vik Persson

I loved your reaction!! I can't wait for the next movie, thank you so much for this :D

Wildstar

something to keep in mind. Legolas is a anime character expect him to act as such

Robert Traeger

I am legitimately excited to see you react to the next two movies after seeing this reaction. You are going to love the pay offs to the character journeys started in this movie. Honestly it's been a while since I've seen the films so I'll probably get teary eyed all over again.

MaddMind

For the casual viewer, the theatrical release can arguably be "better" as a normal movie, cause what it mostly cuts out is basically extra banter and prolonged scenes that just flesh out some of the areas and dialogues more. It's more digestible to those who aren't as used to watching long movies/shows, and aren't as... deeply invested in the media I guess? The extended versions is by far superior if you have more than a passing interest in world building and things beyond just going straight from one key main plot scene to the next though.

Shatol Darmelo

The rings corruption is not about who but about when. Everyone falls the only difference is how long they can resist.

Karatsuki

So Legolas smiles after being told Galadriel gave Gimli the Dwarf three hairs because he knows the significance of elvish history. Many have desired her hair, which she never gave, particularly Feanor (in history/Tolkein lore) who asked for her to be his 3 times, which she denied 3 times. She saw that Gimli did not desire her hair to possess her but to admire her, so she gave him three strands as basically a statement of the 3 times she rejected Feanor. Gimli was the first to make such a request without the desire to possess her.

REI

I just keep remembering how he died in the Lego game.

unknown organism

Oda is just enough of a nerd that he’s probably considered it. Thankfully he’s too sappy to kill any strawhats, except maybe Luffy judging from how many of his power-ups irreparably shorten his lifespan.

unknown organism

Easily my favorite out of the trilogy

unknown organism

"What the friiiick broooo?"

Tony

Man the Uruk-Hai must have legs of steel and combustion engines for hearts. They’ve all been sprinting nonstop in full plate armor for several days in a row and still managed to catch up to our band of protagonists who had horses, boats, and a massive head start. All without ever tiring.

unknown organism

That was awesome - most epic reaction I've ever seen! I agree the director's cuts flow really nicely and fit in well! It's crazy that they add like 30-45 minutes to each movie or so, when usually it's around half that if you're lucky and the scenes are usually lower quality b-roll stuff you can pick apart, or like in the original Star Wars trilogy, you can really notice the newer 3D they added, which is not a bad thing, but noticeable!

L Freya

27:25 IN DEFENSE OF MY BOY. there was a long history of this actually down bad elf that wanted galadriel and begged her look his way or even give her a single hair. of course she looked into his heart and saw he was impure. she's basically a litmus test for one's character and she looked at Gimli, son of Gloin, and saw someone so damn pure of heart that she gave him three strands of hair when he asked for one. lotr fans feel free to correct me, this is off the top of my head

Daniel Siegfried

1:09:30 While I understand wanting to see Gandalf interact more with the others, remember that aside from traveling together, Frodo is the only one that was really friends with Gandalf before the Fellowship. The other hobbits were glad to see him, but Frodo was the one that jumped in for a hug when Gandalf arrived in town.

QuibblesAndGitz

I also love the establishing landscape shots, since that emphasizes well the distance they've covered and still have to go! The high and wide rotating field of view with almost no previously seen landmarks reinforces that this is Hundreds of miles that they are covering on Foot and that the best case expectation was 40 days of travel, so this is happening over weeks and months. Also I love Alicia's comment about wondering what was cut for the Theatrical! That's a great mark of a well made movie, that even after more than three and a half hours you don't feel that any of the time spent was wasted!!

QuibblesAndGitz

And then my mind goes to a gremlin vtuber breakdancing lol

QuibblesAndGitz

Fun fact, in the place where they see Galadriel, there is no CGI, they are giant models on which they superimpose the characters

Dante Auditore

thank you

Aaro Tiljander

I remember when my mom introduced me to the movies. Loved them all. From the action scenes, the story, the music; I cannot say which I loved more. Hope she watches the Hobbit movies as well after these.

So glad you're enjoying New Zealand's landscapes.

Anzac-A1

in case you ever feel like rewatching these movies. all of them have full cast commentary versions. Really good on later watches.

And now we shall wait for the journey to continue In the next movie

Artemis

to be fair, everyone wants more at the end of a lotr movie

Ellerian

Oh, when they started playing The Shire theme as Frodo and Sam were walking away together at the end, i'm not ok. ;-;

Serenity Fox

Right? It feels like there are a million behind-the-scenes stories about Viggo Mortensen that consistently depict him as just being an absolute unit. IIRC, the swordmaster for Two Towers even described him as "The best swordsman I've ever trained," and he pretty much always did his own stunts even after suffering injuries (including the famous incident where he broke a couple of toes). Granted, he wasn't the only one who toughed out injuries on set. Apparently there were times when Jackson would joke about Mortensen, Bloom, and Rhys-Davies' stunt double Brett Beattie were the "walking wounded" because they continued shooting scenes of running on rough terrain despite all of them having painful injuries at the time. Mortensen just has some of the most standout moments of behind-the-scenes badassery like the dagger-deflection.

Ven

no its the beginning

dragon

In all of fiction!

Drewtendo

TWO TOWERS FAST PLEASE! Yeah, I know, I know, you have a schedule, blah blahdyfuckin' blah. TWO TOWERS!!! PLEASE! FUCK YO SCHEDULE! MERRY AND PIPPIN ARE IN DANGER!

rrrebo

It's a good movie tho

Ponyman1997

Sean Bean dying and making me sad. Name a more perfect combination.

Bj Howe

as much as i don't want to see Zoro die, that would be a FIRE line, and fit so perfectly

NickAsNickName

You do have a point, either way these movies are a top tier🙂

JustRiver0o

Another fun fact time: Gimli calling Galadriel the fairest thing he has seen is incredibly significant. From the Dwarves’ creation they were cursed with greed for gold and jewels and the works of their hands. When he saw Galadriel as more fair than any works of Dwarven hands, he broke that curse. Those three hairs he put into clear crystal, and it became an heirloom of his house forevermore. Another edit for fun facts! If I remember right, Aragorn put on Boromir’s bracers at the end after his death (Viggo’s idea I’m pretty sure). I’m also pretty sure that they filmed all three films together 😁

Chronos Hoffman

I've been slowly reading my way through the books, and I am amazed at the choices they made to adapt Tolkien's often longwinded writing into such a tight, intense movie. I know some fans of the books are/were disapointed by some of the choices made, but to me it's is simply fascinating. They were also very smart about what parts to cut from the extended movie for the theatrical release. But we still end up losing some good Boromir moments, sadly.

DocteurNS

Sam is the realest motherfucker in all of fantasy.

Liesmith

you could say seeing these movies first gives more value to the hobbit movies aswell though.

marlanes

A couple cool details to wrap the first movie up that you should keep an eye out for if/when you rewatch it, lots of lil details are shoved into these movies that are never mentioned but you notice em on rewatches: -Legolas had no trouble walking on snow, even though the others were wading through it waist deep, Elves are very light and gracious. -Gandalf also carried a Ring, Narya, the Elven ring of Fire, hence why he says "I am a servant of the secret fire, wielder of the flame of Anor" -Aragorn put on Boromirs arm bracers in rememberance of him after they set him off down the waterfalls.

Lewd Angel

Fun Fact: Viggo, the guy who play Aragorn, might as well be the real Aragorn. Dud is Tough with a capital T. That part where the Uruk-Hai threw his dagger back at him? Yeah that was real. The stuntman accidentally threw the thing at the actor who ACTUALLY deflected it. Dude is a fucking badass.

Wil DeYoung

*Zarbon laugh in the distance at the end*

Jacob Goodheart

I second this.

Sancturillore -- Élie Simard-Wallot

Galadrial: "Instead of a lord, you would have a queen, not dark but beautiful and terrible as the dawn!" "You don't have to sell it so hard, I'm already 100% down."

Liesmith

yep that is where the first movie ends. I saw this in theaters back in the day and I just wanted more instantly. If the other two movies (which weren't out yet despite filming at the same time) were to play back to back I would have stayed in that theater like this was some German Opera.

YukoValis

Yep, and he promises to guard and pass down the strands as an heirloom to remember and honor the peace between elves and dwarves. So what fEanor, arguably the greatest of the elves, was denied, wa entrusted to Gimli as a promise between races. And he has no knowledge of the symbolism behind the gesture, but Legolas certainly does.

GaimeGuy

Alicia wanted more from an almost 4 hour long movie?

DankusMemes

I wish we had started this series in chronological order, beginning with The Hobbit. It provides a deeper understanding of the characters and the overall story. Still, it's an incredibly captivating movie series. Can't wait to see the rest of the films😊

JustRiver0o

The movie ends there because the fellowship broke so it's no more the Fellowship of the Ring.

Pedro Ferreira

yo about Boromir imagine just inmagine if for some reason at the end of one piece zoro die. I want the same exact line from zoro to luffy "my brother, my captain, my king" that would actually be both a great reference and just a banger line retracing their journey and relathionship.

Matthias

There are things outside of character deaths that hit way harder when they aren’t blatantly confirmed or denied by an extra scene prior to learning the outcome when the time comes. Also, if you what you said was true, most people wouldn’t care about spoilers, but they do. But in any case, it’s a matter of opinion of what is important to you, and the weight people put on “reveals” may seem silly to you, but can ruin scenes for others.

Toodles

The weight people put on "reveals" is a bit silly. As if something like boromir's death isn't a gut wrench of an event no matter from how far away you see it coming. It is the same with other things. I'm fairly certain you'll see it hit as it is supposed to.

Dopamine Cloud

If he blocked some arrows and killed some time, there is a slight chance it was enough time for aragorn to find him. He did blow the horn, they were going right to them.

Dopamine Cloud

Hey Alicia, just as a heads up I'd maybe avoid reading the messages here and on youtube for these films. The fans are very passionate and while well meaning, might end up spoiling unintentionally. We forget that some people want to see these blind.

nope narp

Best of the trilogy for my money. But of course it is impossible not to view the trilogy as a single beast of a film. That said, find me another 3 hour long movie that when it ends you go "no there has to be more" hahaha.

Dopamine Cloud

A couple of fun facts: The reason this feels like a D&D campaign is because this is what inspired D&D in the first place, with Halflings originally being called Hobbits before copyright became a problem. The other fun fact is that a long, long time ago there was an elf that asked Galadriel for a single hair 3 times, and she refused each time. Now Gimli asked once, and she gave him 3 hairs.

Swan Ronson

Poor Bastard used up all his luck for Sharpe.

Beetlefan

ngl, 10/10 for me Like, it is THE Fantasy movie. Maybe not the best movie ever made but when you think fantasy, tolkien and LotR is literally going to be on MY mind every time

WillGlacier

Wonderful reactions! And yeah, they knocked so many aspects out of the park. As to adaptation, it's about as good as we could ever hope for. Like I said last time, a few oddities, like making Merry and Pippin more comic relief then they were in the books, but, damn did they do good! Eager for the next one! Things just get better from here!

Seraphem

“That how they end the movie?” Now imagine, waiting a year.

PotterBrony

I think Rewatchability can always add points, but i will never take away points for lack of it. My perfect example is "Grave of the Fireflies" that movie is a rare perfect 10 for me, but it doesnt need to be rewatched

Craig

No, it is simply a beginning

Randomocity732

Re-watching this really hits me right in the nostalgia, I'm glad you liked it!

Tee

But if you get the dual-wielding feat don't you cover for that lack of AC? Clearly, Boromir didn't have it, but still!

Kaz

Pretty sure that scene where she mentioned big A (aragorn) hair was one of those scenes.

Speed1247

This seems like a good end to the first movie, but damn I didn't realize how much I actually remembered this movie, like 90% of the important scenes and events I remembered and I haven't seen this movie in a decade or more.

Speed1247

If you remember JJK season 1, we saw Itadori had to watch this movie during his training with the punching bear.

Creep Knight

By accident at that

NERD!

It’s always a gamble to switch from sword and shield to two-handed. Sometimes you need the extra damage bonus, and you’re like, “nah, my AC’s fine without it” and you just gotta roll the dice.

Steven Bermudez

I cannot wait for the 2nd film it only gets better

Malcorpse

i've seen LotR about 10 times in my life. And Boromirs death still makes me teary eyed. Such a great yet tragic end to a character like him.

Mojo

Copied from the web: The Fellowship of the Ring had 13 nominations including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay. It won four Oscars: Best Cinematography, Best Makeup, Best Original Score, and Best Visual Effects. It also received four nominations at the 59th British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) and six nominations at the 59th Golden Globe Awards, including Best Motion Picture—Drama and Best Director.

leviathan_13

I remember the DVDs for the movies each had these LOOOOONG "making of" videos, practically as long as the movie itself. Since Alicia mentioned wanting to know about the fight choreography and stuff, maybe she could check those out as well. It's been 20-odd years since I watched those.

SouthHill

Don't worry, soon when it comes to Big A you will learn the hype and refer to him exclusively as Aragorn, son of Arathorn.

Craig

I wonder if B would have lived if he had his shield with him

Uncle Urdnot

Did not expect you to drop this today - a supersize indeed but a welcome one. just spend my afternoon watching your reaction and its great. I cant wait for you to continue the next two movies. the third propably my favorite and having one of the best WAR scenes in movie history in my opinion. and the time period this came out in... its a masterclass of series. and glad you are enjoying it and being honest with your opinion.... and I had the exact same reaction on the extended version as you. as I watched the extended version on my first watch also and like where the hell do you cut 35 min of runtime?

Christo Badenhorst

Of course that's how they end the first movie. It's only buildup for movie 2 and 3. The real story starts now.

VaanGov

There are impossible odds all throughout the story, it would have kept him from dying to the leader and from there he could have delayed until Aragorn arrived. He only needed to last a minute or two

Adam Young

considering that the cause of death was arrows - which a shield would protect him from - I call your BS. you saying that is equal to "the narrative/author wanted him dead, that's why he's dead" ...

Silver Blade

fun fact: the actor for Aragon actually deflected that knife...crazy cool

Cloud_Clad

Gimili asking for a single hair actuly goes back to the earliest age the creation of the Silmarils so gimili getting 3 actuly was a big thing . =D

Tor Andre Frantsvaag

Alicia and Sam is going to be one hell of a journey to watch. One little bit Alicia hasn't mentioned is that Aragorn takes Boromir's vambraces after his death. Carrying a piece of him with him.

Jobbe Smit

and now you wait !!!A YEAR!!! for the next part...

Silver Blade

Fëanor one of the greatest Elves to ever live and creator of the Silmarils (three indescribably beautiful and magical jewels that contained the light and essence of the world before it became flawed.) Begged Galadriel three times for single strand of her beautiful hair. And each time Galadriel refused him. Gimli without realizing just received one of the most significant gifts in Elven history.

RedRam-Ipsen

Prepare for the slew of "did you knows?" My advice for a second viewing? Grab someone who knows all the stupid 'dyk's', just so you can say you've heard them all ahead of people talking up their own favorite behind the scenes or lore dumps

Pockets

Er, no he wouldn’t. He was surrounded by dozens of orcs. Impossible odds.

Toasted Toad

About Tolkien and Lord of the Rings: Tolkien wrote book/s and set time to be in far forgotten past, to give British people a mythological past and shared meaning. Tolkien studied languages at school and read many books that you can find he took inspiration from, while many of them are common in English literature, from some sources his biggest inspiration was Finnish epoch called Kalevala, collection of Finnish stories passed down orally from one generation to another. He served as soldier during World War 1 and served in Somme, it was known as Hell on Earth with poison gas, flames, mud, bullets and shells. When he returned home, he wrote his own version of Kullervo, a story within Kalevala that followed theme of story. Just a warning, he has called these stories vile, ruthless, un-european and many other things, but also intriguing. After Kullervo he worked on Hobbit book (There and Back again, same book that Bilbo wrote at start of movie) that became prequel to his later and most known book, Lord of the Rings. He tried to write sequel to LotR but he never seemed to have gotten past first chapter, as he seemed to have not found reason for his story. There seems to be one surviving draft from this sequel only, containing this chapter. He also wrote The Similarion, a collection of mythos and history of Middle-Earth. This book went through many re-editing and such before he was content to even release book. It however was not finished before he died. His son and people who were close to his story connected all his notes and stuff to complete book and released it. Fun Fact: Tolkien based Elven languages, Quenya and Sindarin on different languages on Europe. Sindarin, common Elf was based on Welsh and other Celtic languages. Quenya was based on Finnish language.

Kampela

Im gonna leave a few points here - in all 3 films combined, they receive about 800 award nominations. They won over 400 - the significance of gimli's hair gift is that thousands of years ago, one of the greatest elves to ever live named faenor asked galadriel 3 times for a lock of her hair as he fancied her. She didnt like him, she saw greatness in other ways than what he did (not to mention he done fucked up and ruined things for everyone) When a lowly dwarf, not even of royal decent asked for the same, she saw the greatness in him and gave him 3 strands of her hair. Gimli encased the hairs in crystal and passed it down his family line as an heirloom. - galadriel is arwen's (aragorn's hot elf gf) grandmother - when the uruk hai chucked that dagger at aragorn's head he was supposed to miss to make deflecting less dangerous. He accidentally threw it straight at aragorns head and aragorn just straight up finessed that shit for real. - gandalf and the balrog are the same species (wild i know) Ill list more as we go along Also, i hope someone picks up that phone. Because i fucking called it! She cried and called at least one hobbit a bean

Commisar_Pickle

Can't wait for all the "DiD yOu KnOw" comments in two towers 🤣🤣

Tony

Personally he's my favorite character. 😊

RedRam-Ipsen

I have gone through a similar experience with Boromir. When I was young, I hated him, but as time has passed he has become one of my favorites. I heard someone describe it like this: Aragorn is the ideal, what men strive to be like, but Boromir is more relatable. He is a good man. He was trying to do his best to save his people and ended up getting seduced by power. Ultimately, he still tried to protect those he could and gave everything in the attempt.

Makix217

I know a lot of the fans might seem a bit overwhelming and rabid, but please do keep in mind that this is quite possibly one of if not THE most popular movie trilogy in the history of cinema. To get a reaction, a BLIND reaction from someone who knows nothing about this universe feels so rare nowadays that its such a delight to actually see someone new get into this. Im hype as fuck for all your reactions, you can't even imagine

Lewd Angel

Boromir lost alot of character moments in Theatrical cut of movie.

Kampela

I don't know why, but Boromir's death scene hit me a lot harder this time around than normal. I've read the books and seen these movies hundreds of times, but I guess with age, more and more I appreciate how amazing a character Boromir is and how tragic but yet meaningful his death was, especially how much it affected Aragorn. Some people dislike or even hate Boromir (the film version, anyway) I'm so excited for The Two Towers! It's probably my favorite of the trilogy.

SNESgirl

When I was yet a wee one, Boromir's death made me cry the first 5 times in a row

Karl Wikman

Boromir unfortunately succumbed to a terminal case of "played by Sean Bean"

Philip Beal

And Boromir would’ve lived if he took his shield with him. He left it behind while trying to steal the ring … it’s poetic

Adam Young

Everyone needs a Sam(wich) in their life. Be that Sam(wich) for someone.

Makix217

If I remember correctly, most Hobbits are not good with water. Fodo's parents died in a boating accident.

Makix217

Fair, just putting in my two cents, and hey, I love the extended, so no skin off my back.

Toodles

I do remember watching this movie in the theatre and there were at least a handful of people that had the same reaction as you when it ended xD If you had read the books you could see it coming ;) When it comes to pacing I do think the first movie is the weakest, partly because it's trying to both introduce the characters and push the story on. The last two movies can just pop up right away.

Erik Nilsson

No point in arguing, Alicia said at the end she’s not watching theatrical.

donald johnson

Completely disagree. If you haven't read the books the theatrical cut is not better.

Erik Nilsson

I don’t necessarily disagree, but putting yourselves in the shoes of a first time viewer the theatrical is a better balance, and if you enjoy the trilogy, the extended is always there to fill in the gaps. That’s how I see it.

Toodles

no, extended all the way

Erik Nilsson

3:59 With a G like Lao G. 46:50 His actor is famous for dying in every role he plays.

Trevor Appel

You miss so much context this way. Yes, the editing of ROTC’s extended cut *does* hurt the pacing of certain elements. But the lack thereof in the theatrical version makes some elements incomprehensible or somewhat out of nowhere. It helps to remember these are adaptions of a book, I think it’s acceptable a couple elements don’t translate perfectly for structure rather than losing them entirely. Granted, some *were* lost, but overall I think the compromises were well handled!

PrivateXimmy

I cry at the boat scene everytime I watch this movie, I just love Sam so much he is the best boy.

theDeathBerry

Can't wait until the second Movie.

Rasmus Helm

Not a spoilet but displays the significance of the 3 strands of hair. (Galadriel) mother-name was Nerwen and she grew to be tall beyond the measure even of the women of the Noldor; she was strong of body, mind, and will, a match for both the loremasters and the athletes of the Eldar in the days of their youth. Even among the Eldar she was accounted beautiful, and her hair was held a marvel unmatched. It was golden like the hair of her father and of her foremother Indis, but richer and more radiant, for its gold was touched by some memory of the starlike silver of her mother, and the Eldar said that the light of the Two Trees, Laurelin and Telperion, had been snared in her tresses. Many thought that this saying first gave to Feanor the thought of imprisoning and blending the light of the Trees that later took ship in his hands as the Silmarils. For Feanor beheld the hair of Galadriel with wonder and delight. He begged three times for a tress, but Galadriel would not give him even one hair. These two kinsfolk, the greatest of the Eldar of Valinor, were unfriends forever. So yeah an eldar of valinor was refused a single hair yet a dwarf got 3

chris johnson

galadriel giving gimli her hair is such a signifigant thing. I wish the films gave a bit mroe context on it. But in the books and all the lore galadriel is seen as the mostt beautiful and enchanting elf in all of middl earth and valinor. her hair glimmering silver and gold. Many of the greatest warriors and lords of the world, elf, human etc have asked but regardless of their standing or feats she never gave a single hair. The elves and dwarves have a feud, hatred for eachothers species. Yet in her final times in middle earth she finally gave hair she gave it to gimli a dwarf. DEspite dwarves being supposedly greedy and selfish gimli was the first not to want her hair just so they can sya they have it. but to onyl admire its beauty, he did not want to possess it he wanted to onyl admire it.

xeleasticfox-x23

Damn Alicia, you really expanding your channel and pattern with all these famous film series and fandoms. You’re gonna make some BANK

Gavin Bickel

Nah.

donald johnson

The extended version is great, but if you haven’t seen any LOTR, it might be better to watch the theatrical going forward. At best, the extended version adds some lore and funny/interesting moments, but at worst, it completely ruins reveals that hit so much hard without the extra scenes. NO SPOILERS: but for example a scene is added in one of the movies that basically tells you the outcome of something nonchalantly way before the actual reveal happens, completely ruining the subsequent scene. Just an opinion, but don’t give in to the rabid LOTR fans(I’m one of them) at the expense of your enjoyment of the trilogy.

Toodles

Ahhhh, that reaction to the end has to be my favorite. Despite how long the movie is, people never see that ending coming.

Makix217

perfect timing! I just finished the last one!
