Seems like you missed a pretty important line there. Loki: "I never wanted the throne! I only ever wanted to be your equal."

2025-05-24 19:48:52 +0000 UTCthat scene in the diner where he smashes the cup? there's actually a really sweet deleted scene where he goes back. He replaces the cup, apologises and asks the owner if she's ok with him coming back again for more coffee. Says a lot about his character and how quick he is to adjust to the different culture!

2024-12-27 17:55:37 +0000 UTCIn this movie, the name Donald Blake is used a couple times. In the comics, Thor started out as Dr Donald Blake, who had a cane that could turn into mjolnir and could turn him into Thor. Later, it was revealed that Donald Blake was created when Odin banished Thor and made him forget he was a god. They eventually started using his Donald Blake persona less and less. Also, in the comics, Jane foster was a nurse, not a physicist.

2024-12-02 21:16:06 +0000 UTCIk. Just wish they wouldn't take my culture and butcher it. Like it's a cool concept but at least get the names/ people right. And the worst of all, loser elitist going "erm actually" about Norse mythology when all they know is what butchered parody version they learnt from marvel

Triene (Katie)
2024-12-02 20:15:09 +0000 UTCIt's based on the comics, not the mythology.
Triene (Katie)
2024-12-02 20:14:32 +0000 UTCI never really saw it as a 180. I think the situation was just so jarring and traumatic, and that he was suddenly amongst totally new kinds of people and had to rely on the help of others, that it forced him to consider a different viewpoint very quickly. But I always saw it as maybe a 90 degree turn. Moving in the right direction, but not completely changed. But you can see in The Avengers The Dark World that he's still learning and growing. Much like Tony Stark turned a new leaf in his first movie, but was still very arrogant; at the same time, you could see him growing as a person.
Triene (Katie)

2024-11-29 23:45:59 +0000 UTCAgreed it likely got people questioning if it was close to mythology or comics. Hence people learned about both.

2024-11-29 23:41:32 +0000 UTCNot to mention Thor is near 1500 years old. That mindset tortured his parents for too long.

2024-11-29 23:38:37 +0000 UTCI mean yeah the comics seemed cool especially WITH the concept of futuristic Norse mythology, but still pretty shitty of them to take someone else's culture and make a fanfic version of it and then be so big that most people don't even know the original and instead know more about the fanfic version of Norse mythology. Like look at God of War, they did an awesome job portraying Norse mythology, granted not 100% accurate but at least 80% or more. And they STILL managed to make it presentable

2024-11-19 03:44:09 +0000 UTCIdris elba was nowhere near as famous as he is now when thor came out, his best role was probably his 9 episodes on the office before this, and none of the main avengers really fit him, so makes sense hes a side character

2024-11-16 15:56:03 +0000 UTCto be fair, I'm pretty sure a lot of that is due to efforts to stay somewhat accurate to the comics, but yeah. Also, at the very least, imo it increased people's interest in learning about Norse mythology

2024-11-13 02:04:43 +0000 UTCI do like Thor's arc, I just wish it took a little longer than a weekend? He's been this arrogant, violent brat for centuries, give him at least a couple of months, if not years, to make a complete 180 change.

2024-11-13 02:04:18 +0000 UTCBtw Loki in marvel movies is good and all but I really like real Loki in norse myths. He does really fucked up shit because "it's funny." It'd honestly be so cool if they gave this Loki that motive but again; it would not really work well for the later movies.

2024-11-09 03:26:07 +0000 UTCThey did it, they just "re-imagined" Is not 'wrong', is a 'bew version', because the idea was 'what if gods were actually super powerful aliens and peopke misunderstand stuff and lost info on the way' Which is why loki and thor are brothers on the marvel comics instead of just friends, they just nade a 'new version' without taking the original myth as we see in the book in the library. They keeped the myths, they arent wrong, because they are myths
Faroth
2024-11-08 18:01:29 +0000 UTCMarvel has never really used the old faith for more than a loose framework at best. It's the same with Marvel's Olympians, Dievas and Eternals. It's convenient to... pilfer, for lack of better words, old cultures. Not that Marvel are the only ones doing it. I've mostly come to terms with it. I kinda used to dislike the Thor comics I read as a child because they deviated from the old stories I grew up with but I can put that aside enough to appreciate the Thor comics for what they are. At least the ones that are good stories in their own right.
Bob
2024-11-08 16:11:35 +0000 UTCtbh it was even fucked up in Norse Mythology, like Odin and his 2 brothers just killed the father of the giants for no reason and used his corpse to build the world, their kingdom, and walls for trapping the frost giants basically making them prisoners for life, and then later Thor comes in and kills them because "The prophecy says they will march in and kill us during Ragnarok"
WillGlacier
2024-11-08 16:10:01 +0000 UTCyeah honestly he did a great job playing Loki from a nose mythology perspective at least. Though he was never 100% evil it was more like he just enjoyed fucking with people
WillGlacier
2024-11-08 16:05:54 +0000 UTCI liked the idea in the comics of making a sci-fi x fantasy version of Norse Mythology but I WISH they would have actually sat down and looked up Norse Mythology because the get so many things wrong for no reason
WillGlacier
2024-11-08 16:04:41 +0000 UTCNo not really. It's "Myol neer". There is no "I" in the name (pronunciation wise), at least the actual pronunciation (idk if they made it different in the Marvel universe)
WillGlacier
2024-11-08 16:03:38 +0000 UTCDude I hate how right you are lmaooo. At least in Sweden (Scandinavia) I got to read a good amount of it in Religion class. Sucks how far off Marvel is from actual Norse mythology
WillGlacier
2024-11-08 16:01:43 +0000 UTCHuh? You compare Loki having a mate (yes mate because Jötnar are animalistic, aka Angrboða) to Zeus who literally went around raping women and calling him worse than Loki??? Do your research next time god damn
WillGlacier
2024-11-08 16:00:01 +0000 UTCI love when they actually add good references to Norse Mythology (like I get the comics tried to make some sci-fi x fantasy version of norse mythology but god damn half the time it feels like they don't even know what Norse Mythology is lol)
WillGlacier
2024-11-08 15:56:32 +0000 UTCngl I would have loved it a lot more if they didn't take my culture and re-write it like some sci-fi bullshit but that's just me I guess

2024-11-08 15:51:56 +0000 UTCNot that it matters since the Norse mythology in Marvel is god awful lmaooo
WillGlacier
2024-11-08 15:50:56 +0000 UTCBut Laufey is supposed to be a woman, and the female Jötnar who had a child with Farbauti who was an unknown god (not much is know about what he was god of, some say wildfire produced by lightning) Studying Norse mythology (or simply just knowing a good amount of it) makes the Thor movies SO PAINFUL to watch lmao
WillGlacier
2024-11-08 15:49:30 +0000 UTCThe Norse mythology nerd in me HATED the Thor movies but tbh, from an entertainment point of view they do their job (just sad they couldn't actually make it remotely close to actual Norse mythology. 2024-11-08 10:33:19 +0000 UTCMan to go from the plot progression of This movie, which is my favorite Thor movie to Thor the dark world. Which is not a bad movie. Just a really, really, really boring movie But the thor is still good in that movie. To Thor Ragnarok, which is where Thor starts going. Downhill Thor Ragnarok very fun movie Especially if you don't know anything about the comics but personally from a comic book nerd point of view The movie sucked. But then they took thor from this movie and thor from the dark world movie Where he was more serious and mature And actually acted like a leader and a king to Thor in thor Ragnarok acting silly, funny goofy, not serious. And don't even get me started on Thor love and thunder That movie sucked from all that progression. All that character development and they just tossed it in the trash.

2024-11-07 07:48:11 +0000 UTCI'm a little torn on this movie. On one hand I think it's actually pretty well written, not particularily original but well executed. On the other hand I think they made quite a few choices that are kind of... boring for lack of a better word. Asgard in the comics has always been part sci fi and part fantasy but I wish they had leaned more into the fantasy part and less sci fi. They kinda did the Asgardian speech but not really the full shakespearian speech patterns from the comics. They didn't really use Loki's fun illusion magic, just a few clone illusions. I guess I just feel that it's good but it could have been better. It has been done better. I think the Earth's Mightiest Heroes cartoon still has the best adaption of Marvel's Thor.

2024-11-06 01:18:49 +0000 UTCWow the nightime filmografy and the shaky dialog scenes are truly an evidense of the mid cinematic handcraft in this movie. The Plot is also copy and paste origin story for a hero. Part 2 is even worse. Part 3 and beyound is kind of funny. Cause it is made by Waititi.

2024-11-05 06:55:29 +0000 UTCI haven't seen marvel movies in a long time but around the hour-ish mark when alicia is talking about loki being narcissistic or whatever and evil, its like so is thor, he's incredibly narcissistic and selfish and all around a lil shit. You cant even really say loki is inherently evil because before thor gets character development hes also kinda just as bad in a different way. If one of your children is shit maybe you can blame it on smthn else but if both your kids are shit, I mean cmon maybe we should be looking at the parenting situation going on.

2024-11-05 04:13:15 +0000 UTCGod, this is so much better after a certain show. This movie is one of the worse in this phase of Marvel. It's not bad, it has good characters and a good story. But it's... weird.

2024-11-05 04:09:16 +0000 UTCI wouldn't really count the god of war as real norse myth, but not the worst choice. I just wouldn't bring up the real Loki's choices when it comes to love life. lol

I know they're different stories but i can't help it... now i'll always see them as shady people xddd. Also what the heck?! Why give the name Laufey to King of the Frost Giants? why not Farbauti? or Bergelmir? Or even Thrym?! xddd. On another topic..... who would've thought that Erik Selvik would eventually become the leader of Harkonnens in the distant future? xddd.

2024-11-04 04:37:39 +0000 UTCI think it’s important to note that, for the **longest time** in the comics, secret identities were basically a requirement of superheroes, fantastic four nonwithstanding. And this “trope” had taken roost in their film adaptions as well! It’s in part what makes the end of iron man 1 somewhat of a subversion. It calls out the idea of a secret identity flat on it’s head, being willing to take the risks of merging the two head on, rather then watering it down to two separate stories.

2024-11-04 03:22:26 +0000 UTCwatching this again just makes me remember how good Loki was in the first movie compared to his later depictions. Seriously, cut down Thor's time on earth and this is a tragedy film with Loki as the protagonist. tldr Odin set up Thor's redemption arc from undeserving crown prince to deserving crown prince because he was Odin's actual son. Loki was a political prisoner, so he was never going to be crown prince whether he deserved it or not. At the start he is by all rights the better candidate for king (smarter, less prone to violence, manipulative and cool headed) but his brother is heir so he instead schemes to keep asgard and the realms safe by keeping the power in the hands of their father (who was like Thor in his youth but is now mature, wise and battle weary). Thor's exile and the revelation of his own birth leads him to want to prove himself to Odin so he begins to act like Thor since that is what the "real" son of Odin would do and has always been championed for it. Then we are left with Thor and Loki having essentially switched agendas from the start of the film (Thor having wanted to kill the Jotuns now saving the realms and Loki wanting to protect the realms to wanting to destroy the Jotuns) but as Loki learns when he seeks Odin's approval at the end, it was never actually about their abilities, agendas or goals. Thor was to be king. It was never going to be Loki. He was never really the son of Odin. If he was he would have been heir at the start of the film. He was a political prisoner, not family.

2024-11-04 02:57:48 +0000 UTCThe Donald Blake name tag is actually a reference to the comics. Back when he was first introduced, Donald Blake was his secret identity, kinda, it was also a multiple personality kinda thing, it's a long story.

2024-11-04 02:54:10 +0000 UTCIt's kinda fucked up that Thor attacked the Frost Giants, killed a ton of them, broke their home, then Odin tried to tell Laufey "well boys will be boys". Yeah dude I'd declare war too.

2024-11-04 02:30:26 +0000 UTCI'm glad you liked the story/plotting so much, because the Story writing credit for this movie is none other than J. Michael Straczynski, who also appears as the first guy who shows up at the crater to try lifting Mjolnir. He's written various comics for Marvel, but what he's most famous for is the pioneering 90s Sci-Fi TV Show Babylon 5. It was one of the first American Broadcast TV shows to have a planned out multi-season narrative with a beginning, middle, and end and it really paved the way for the modern serialized storytelling that's come to dominate streaming shows. I don't know that it would be up your alley, but it's my all-time favorite TV show and there's really never been another show like it in terms of scope and ambition, especially since it was working on a tiny fraction of the budget of Star Trek.

2024-11-04 00:37:37 +0000 UTCTbf, Iron Man 1 came out in 2008, Disney bought Marvel in late 2009, and Iron Man 2 was released early 2010, so it was already far into production, if not finalizing post production, before Disney was involved.. Given the success of those two and the existing road map, that's less of a gamble and more a well timed investment, since all they had to do was stay out of the way and not F it up.. Which is what they did later..

2024-11-03 22:35:07 +0000 UTCThis one has always been my favorite of the Marvel movies. Being descended from Vikings has nothing to do with it, really. :) You should know that this movie was directed by Sir Kenneth Branagh, well know for his Shakespeare productions. (you have to see his 'Much Ado About Nothing', hilarious.) Sir Anthony Hopkins and Tom Hiddleston at least are also experienced Shakespearean actors. I think it really comes across in the quality of this production. Dramatic but not corny. And the story was a very traditional hero arc. Fall, redemption, triumph but with tragedy. Good stuff.

2024-11-03 20:28:07 +0000 UTCmaybe this is a hot take, but i believe Loki was 100% justified in his initial plan of getting Thor exiled. He saw the danger a beginning of movie Thor posed as a king while everyone else was ignorant or dismissive of his sheer arrogance, immaturity, and war monger demeanor. Also i feel his increasing resentment was reasonably valid. Imagine finding out that your very existence was just a means to an end in your adoptive fathers plans to force you to become king to a people you despise, in a realm you loathe and that you'd never even be considered to rule your home that you love simply bc of what you were born as. You missed the line where Loki literally says he never wanted the throne, he just wanted to stand with his brother as an equal, he didnt want the throne for power or for greed and selfishness. He wanted it bc he wants to be acknowledged by both Thor and Odin and that was his means of achieving it.

2024-11-03 19:13:13 +0000 UTCHonestly, I don't think it's guilt over what he did; I think it's hatred of the people that it turns out he came from. He was raised thinking he had an equal chance to become King of Asgard, when it turns out (in his mind) that such was never an option; if Odin HAD stuck with his original plan, Loki would've then been sent to be king of a people he despised, on a cold and dark world he loathed.

Its kinda like classic disney villains like Malificent, who was just petty because she felt insulted being left out of the royal celebration, or Ursula, who just exploits people because she's grown apathetic after being shunned prematurely by the mermaids.
