I get where Alicia is coming from about the whole "He's not smarter or stronger, but more empathetic" angle, but let's not trip... He IS probably literally the smartest guy on the island. Aside from Fish Legs, maybe. He not only learned how to ride and tame dragons, but created an entire saddle/tail wing system from scratch to help Toothless fly... He's got some OP ingenuity and crafting skills for sure

2024-11-27 03:57:17 +0000 UTCOne of the rare few series where every movie in the trilogy knocks it out of the park. Ever since I watched the first one in theater, this has been my favorite animated film series.

2024-11-26 14:50:17 +0000 UTCI like how Alicia understand where the father is coming form. I do think she missed the part where Hiccups was constantly pestering him to train as a warrior viking that is why he did not listen in the talk they had. He probably assumed he was joking as he tends to do. But the "think like us part" is bad even for warrior military ppl.

2024-11-24 03:21:06 +0000 UTCThere is a Series that plays between Movies 1 and 2 if you want to expand the lore, get to know the Berkians and all the different kinds of dragons. It also sets up some Easter eggs for movie 2 in the end. Well worth a watch

2024-11-21 07:58:11 +0000 UTCThe timing on this is insaaane.. I commented on her Avengers upload about how its been crazy so far that theres been new trailers for new films happening with what she's started watching lol. Star Wars Marvel and now this.

2024-11-18 10:48:37 +0000 UTCAnd Stoik has a different dragon in the movie, too, right? Also Hiccup from the show was...really different. They got the same voice actor back so he sounds exactly the same, but the way he behaves was just lot more boring.
hemahemahema
2024-11-18 03:54:35 +0000 UTCCome on, she's been obsessed with him ever since he started doing well in training. Do you know for a young person who's just hit puberty, what that kind of long term fixation, with a member of the gender you are into, who's not bad looking, what that does?
hemahemahema
2024-11-18 03:06:43 +0000 UTCI don't know if anyone here is into Jungian psychology, but I was into that shit big time when I first watched this movie. And this movie was literally what Jung was talking about. One of the things he talked about is the primitive practice - found in every tribes across the world - of searching for your spirit animal. You'd be a young kid who's come of age, and you'd leave your tribe for the first time in your life, to go live on your own. You stay close to a body of water, you wait. You will see different animals, and you are waiting for one, for a specific moment, when you'd see a creature and get the distinct impression that you are looking at yourself. And that's it, you'd come back to your village and you'd be an adult. Jung believed this animal represents your soul. Then there's the archetype theory, about how your subconscious is made up of these archetypes, one of the most important of which is the Shadow. The Shadow archetype is often used in popular fiction to construct a villain for the hero, someone the same yet also the opposite, but that's not what the archetype is actually about. It's about rejecting parts of yourself, alienating yourself, which coalesces into a "shadow" that represents everything you hate about yourself. But growth is not achieved by destroying it, but by accepting it, through reconciliation with the shadow, people can become whole, and achieve self-actualization. And Toothless is a shadow in the sky. That's what Toothless is to Hiccup. He found him near a body of water, the injury he dealt to the dragon eventually was reflected on his own body. That's because Toothless is Hiccup, he is his shadow, he is his spirit animal, when Hiccup hurt him, he hurt himself, and when they are together, they are complete. That whole Forbidden Friendship sequence was completely without dialogue, I actually believe if you showed that to a primitive tribe - and you know, once they get over your black sorcery - they would understand exactly what that sequence is all about: a boy finding his spirit animal.

2024-11-17 23:08:22 +0000 UTCYou should watch the Dreamworks Dragons series. Riders of Berk, Defenders of Berk, then Race to the Edge. 8 great seasons of new dragons and peak adventures
Hunter
2024-11-17 23:03:54 +0000 UTCanother detail i love about the ending fight. they don't stop doing the cinematic things that make "the night fury" less scary, the noise, the silence before the zoom, the creepy shadow perspective, all remain even after the narrative has established the public approval, because those things don't go away, just the meaning and perception. using that pov you can see the magic of being ignorant seeing the same things but having a completely different reaction to them. love it
Gavin Thomas
2024-11-17 18:27:13 +0000 UTCwhen toothless is trapped you can see the dad is the one reading his movements and reading his reactions, which is a small part of empathy showing his dad IS CAPABLE but chooses not to be.

2024-11-16 18:40:55 +0000 UTC100%, one of the few movies with an actually good spinoff show. It really fleshes the world out. At least childhood me thought so!

2024-11-16 18:07:15 +0000 UTCdon't know, never watched them. Don't think you need to, in order to watch the movies. Star Wars Clone Wars I feel should be watched to help flesh out the giant 3-4 year gap between 2 & 3, but How to Train Your Dragon films do really well catching you up with out needing to see all the minutia.

2024-11-15 22:21:36 +0000 UTCI love this series. It has a lot of strong sequel movies and shows, and for some reason the sheep give zero fucks about anything throughout the entire series. Never fails to make me laugh.

2024-11-15 06:18:02 +0000 UTCThis is still one of my favorite movies of all time. It came out at a time when I had just broken my leg snowboarding and was going through my dad leaving my family as well as all around tough times in life. I can say it legitimately saved me from ending my life and I will always thank its existence every time I watch it. Love it to the end of time.

2024-11-14 19:18:40 +0000 UTCYeah, she’s infuriated that the village nobody/screw up go from bottom of the barrel to top of the class in such unconventional “non Viking” ways, but she’s still a human being.

Charlie baker
2024-11-14 14:43:20 +0000 UTCA small detail I like about Astrid is how during her confrontation with Hiccup, her first instinct when seeing Toothless, even when she disliked him, was to try and get him out of harms way, before telling him to run. Putting herself between him and Toothless. I think it speaks a lot to what sort of person she is that, that is her first instinct. Even when dealing with someone she dislikes/is suspicious of.

2024-11-14 13:44:14 +0000 UTCI’m a fanatic of the series. I PRAY she watches it.

2024-11-14 12:58:30 +0000 UTCAlicia, Before you watch the second movie, there is a TV series for this series, I HIGHLY recommend you watch Those first, before your watch the second movie. there are Several series that follow the first movie. from immediately after the first movie, to the start of the second movie. PLEASE watch the series before the second movie. One is on Netflix by the name of Race to the Edge, but the 2 series before that are riders and defenders of Berk. Riders and Defenders of Berk can be found on Amazon Prime video, Peacock, Apple TV, and Fandango at home. If you want to Truly enjoy that characters from the movie and watch them grow, I HIGHLY recommend watching the series.

2024-11-14 12:37:20 +0000 UTCAlso something to know. We learn from the show that the name "Hiccup" is often used to describe runts, a viking who wasn't built like a linebacker and skinny is best called a Hiccup

2024-11-14 09:58:29 +0000 UTCI'm begging you to watch How To Train Your Dragon, Race To The Edge! It's the series on Netflix and it's SO SO good, it expands the world so much and no one ever reacts to it and that's such a shame!

2024-11-14 09:57:56 +0000 UTCOMG I CANT BELIEVE YOURE WATCHING MY FAVORITE FRANCHISE! ahhhhh!! Please tell me you're doing the entire trilogy!

2024-11-14 09:57:10 +0000 UTCFriggin' fantastic movie. So glad you liked it so much. Trivia: The way several of the dragons move, but *especially* Toothless, was based very heavily on cats. There's a behind the scenes clip I've seen where they were recording a housecat as reference for the animators and they'd stuck a small ball of tape (sticky-side-out) to its tail to see how it moved while trying to get it off--presumably for the scene when Hiccup first attaches the artificial fin to Toothless's tail.

2024-11-14 08:13:01 +0000 UTCAlicia watching this is the epitome of "If not friend why friend shaped?" If one day you tell me Alicia got hurt trying to pet a cute animal that could tear her apart, id believe it

2024-11-14 05:51:52 +0000 UTCI will never get over how beautiful the music for this movie is. It's generally seen as one of the best movie scores and it deserves every bit of praise that it gets.
Gentle Giant06
2024-11-14 05:49:15 +0000 UTCFun fact the Eel scene, was further expanded in the Tv show. Dragons are allergic to eels, and it's poisonous to them.
Randomguy65
2024-11-14 05:49:11 +0000 UTCHere's something fun: The dragons passing out when getting scritched under the chin has some loose basis in biology. Cows, when their cooperation is needed, get a thing like a paper clip put on their lip, called a twitch, and while it's pinching and holding their lip, they're super docile. Animal behaviorists originally attributed this to fear, but hilariously enough, brain scans showed that the cow's brains are releasing serious amounts of dopamine and serotonin while the twitch is on. Imagine being able to get high just by pinching your lip!

2024-11-14 05:37:59 +0000 UTCi LOVE that scene with Astrid giving Hiccup a pep talk. it's probably up there in my top three favs in the entire franchise
Chris Foley
2024-11-14 05:22:29 +0000 UTCThis is by far my favorite trilogy, and in my top 3 of series I've watched, they really manage to invoke an emotional response and get you invested into the world and its characters. What I love the most though is the music, the score for this film is just outstanding and really makes me want to adventure and inspires that dreamer in me. The only regret this movie gives me is that I'll never get to experience the vivid feelings of excitement and wonder that Hiccup and Toothless's flight music invokes in me. Great reaction, great movie, hope to see the rest soon and that you enjoy them just as much.
Archie Curlz
2024-11-14 05:06:34 +0000 UTCOne of the best things about this franchise is that its one of the very rare examples of people understanding how to properly do a sequel. The next 2 movies are both equally as good and to me the 3rd is the best in the trilogy.
AlthosHol
2024-11-14 04:58:59 +0000 UTCits rare to have a perfect trilogy where it does not overstay its welcome. a concluded story. and each of the 3 movies handled with the same love and care .

2024-11-14 03:54:14 +0000 UTCActually there was two "series" before. The whole show is Dragons and the Order is Riders of berk(season 1), defenders of berk(season 2), and finally Race to the Edge( seasons 3-8)

2024-11-14 01:44:24 +0000 UTCYeah I figured you'd enjoy this one considering the wholesome dragon cat boi, and the sequels are just as good too! which not all good movies have good sequels, but this is one of the ones where the entire trilogy holds itself to the same level.

2024-11-14 01:32:34 +0000 UTCMaking dragons move somewhere between a cat and a dog, really is a brilliant move towards endearing them to us.

2024-11-14 01:31:12 +0000 UTCim glad you understand Stoick's view, too many reactors ignore how Stoick must feel growing up watching his family and friends being eaten or burnt alive by dragons, yes it is a horrible thing he said to Hiccup and yes he is not a great father, but he is a good man at heart, just under a lot of pressure

2024-11-14 01:27:38 +0000 UTCI love this movie and its sequals and I'm also a fan of the tv shows and mini series that came out in tandem with the movies, except for the most recent one, The Nine Realms, that is god awful representation of HTTYD.

2024-11-14 01:22:13 +0000 UTCanother point with the "Astrid was the best, now she's not, she wants to know why" thing is that Astrid has never said she's the best, she's never outrightly been aggressive or bullying in her greatness, in fact the only thing she has stated about her skill is that she wants to make sure she's good enough for when her generation takes over from the adults "our parents war is about to become ours" So her whole thing about needing to know where Hiccup gets his talent from is for a very moral standpoint, she doesn't necessarily want the info for just herself, this information can help everyone.
Vegvisir92
2024-11-14 01:13:32 +0000 UTCone of my very first memories is of my dad taking me to see this in theaters as a baby and rewatching now realizing how poignant these themes are with hiccup and his dad is actually making me sob

2024-11-14 00:28:20 +0000 UTCbefore going onto the other two films, there's some series that actually take place between this and film two, first is riders of berk, defenders of berk (both of them can be found on peacock) then race to the edge (than one is the longest and on netflix). riders and defenders are technically the same series split into two, but they're great watches.
Ethan
2024-11-14 00:21:29 +0000 UTCI would actually recommend the riders of berk/ race to the edge spin off series to watch on your own time though it would be cool for you to react to it

2024-11-13 23:55:21 +0000 UTCIf you like the movies, you’ll like the animated series’. “Riders/Defenders of Berk” and “Race to Dragons Edge” both managed to expand the world even further and fit in between the movies very well.
Moviejunkie
2024-11-13 23:48:07 +0000 UTCOh this series is gonna wreck you it’s so damn good. And unlike most films they actually progress the overall story with a beginning and end it mind not just pushing out films for a cash grabs (the TVs show are another story). This film is very loosely based on a children’s book series, I say loosely because really the only thing they kept was character names and the overall setting. In the books berk already had a long tradition of dragon training, the reason why hiccup was special is because he studied dragon and literally learned their language so he could speak with them. Also toothless wasn’t a night fury in the books he is just a snarky young garden dragon about the size of the tiny ones we see in your film, most of the time he’s just being arrogant as hell and sassing everyone. Most of the villains and characters have the same names but plots are vastly different. They also lean more heavily into I guess the meta side of things. The books are written as if your reading an autobiography of hiccup’s childhood who is now an old man recounting the legends of the dragons he grew up with now seen as myths. Either way the films do a far better job with the overall story, characters, and pacing

2024-11-13 23:33:56 +0000 UTCI will never get the complaints for Stoick stopping the fight. Would you let your son stay in a cage with a dangerous animal without any weapons or armour? To Stoick and everyone, all they know is dragons are dangerous animals. You're only seeing from the perspective of Hiccup and not Stoick

2024-11-13 23:32:44 +0000 UTCYour point about Astrid's character - in the scene after she first meets toothless is very accurate and good to see. She is a bit aggressive but I think there is some "subtle on first watch but obvious after that" actions on her part in that scene. As you mention she talks about the "trainer" as in she is jealous - from a place of wanting to better herself. But something to note is when she sees Toothless for the first time - and she's skilled enough we can almost assume she recognized it as a Night Fury....yano basically the god of death of her people. The first thing she does is Yell "watch out" and tackle Hiccup to the ground to try hide. That doesn't work and a dragon charges her, she jumps to her feet drags hiccup up and what does she do. She braces for the charge and screams Run.RUN! to him. She is young and experiencing that first moment of being humbled and upset and trying to figure out how to improve, but she is not a bad person because the first thing she does in the moment of life and death is try to protect the person beside her, a person who annoys her.
Deagor
2024-11-13 23:30:15 +0000 UTCSo ima just say this hiccup and his father opinions change right at that moment cause he was giving hiccup wanted until he realized he couldn't actually kill a dragon.

2024-11-13 23:30:04 +0000 UTCOne of the best movies trilogies, and one of the few that actually had good show tie ins!
Vendacator
2024-11-13 23:26:57 +0000 UTCThis is easily one of the best trilogies of all time. Personally I love all three and hope you decide to watch the rest sooner rather than later!!!
Wesley Lambert
2024-11-13 23:22:48 +0000 UTCFun Fact: Toothless closing his eyes and the slight hesitation before accepting Hiccup's hand is actually an animation error, however when the directors caught wind of it they actually kept it in because they realized just how much more powerful this little "hiccup" made the scene. Fun Fact 2: There is a TV series of How to Train Your Dragon that covers the time gap between the first and second movie (and even a short after the third movie). While not entirely necessary to watch for context, it does help fill in some of the gaps and even helps us watch the cast progress as characters.

2024-11-13 23:19:54 +0000 UTCLove the reaction with all the emotions going on. Some of the best scenes for me were the first flight with the orchestral score and the 2 scenes with the dad, the first scene when he leaves the house after telling Hiccup "you're not my son." when you see the hurt and regret of saying that to his son & then after they save Toothless and he says "I'm proud to call you my son." with all the emotions that were shown in those scenes. I also love the amount of detail in Toothless's eyes when they first meet and he has Hiccup pinned to the ground.

2024-11-13 23:19:25 +0000 UTCjust so you know there are also tv shows and specials as well as the 2 sequel movies after this in case your looking for content to watch.....plus i'd say that some of the shows are pretty good. just saying you should probably watch it in this order there's the legend of the boneknapper, then theres gift of the night furry, then theres book of dragons, then theres DreamWorks dragons: riders of berk (which I look up and has 4 seasons),then theres the dawn of dragon racing and FINALLY there's the 2nd and 3rd movies sorry if all that is intimidating just so you know there may or may not be stuff from each of the specials and the TV shows that are added to the later movies that you may not get if you skip to them OR.....you are more than free to simply watch the next 2 movies and then watch the other stuff if you feel like it just saying its up to you but just giving you some ideas for content

2024-11-13 22:07:12 +0000 UTCthis entire trilogy came out when i was growing up and yes you are right toothless is everything hes the best part about this movie along with hiccup also i really hope you react to all of the other series in the how to train your dragon in the cronological order they are so worth it and will show the giant character growth everyone goes throught from beginning to end in order after the 1st movie Legend of the Boneknapper Dragon Book of Dragons Dragons: Gift of the Night Fury DreamWorks Dragons riders of berk and dragons defenders of berk Dragons: Dawn of the Dragon Racers Dragons: Race to the Edge all seasons How to Train Your Dragon 2 How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World and finnally How to Train Your Dragon: Homecoming

2024-11-13 22:04:36 +0000 UTCThe taming scene is what I think elevated this move from good to great. You can see that the overall animation shows its age and is sometimes a bit crude, but they really put that much effort into the expressions and body language of both Toothless and the main characters. It's so nice, even now. The "unspoken" communication is great, like how the Dad was shown to also be a bit clumsy or how the dragons are not inherently hostile as demonstrated by the dragon in the exam trying to escape first before doing anything else or the dragons in the nest just leaving without a fight.

2024-11-13 22:04:15 +0000 UTCThese movies are probably my favorite movies of all time

2024-11-13 22:03:23 +0000 UTCHTTYD is one of my favorite series of films, absolutely great and a must watch. Glad to see you enjoy the first one so much!

2024-11-13 22:02:36 +0000 UTCI think Hiccup's dad is such a well written character! Remember he's not just a father, he's basically a king! He's got the entire village's safety to think about. And he's never EVER seen a dragon be friendly to humans before. In his mind, to hesitate is weakness. To show mercy for a dragon is to watch your loved ones get killed by them. The sake of the entire village rests on their combined determination to slay dragons, as it has for generations. If you look at how sad his eyes are after locking his son inside... it's clear that HE is the one that feels betrayed by Hiccup. Especially after learning about the dragon nest. And that it was kept hidden from him.

Oh! That Robin
2024-11-13 21:35:05 +0000 UTCFunny that you mention Huccup's name meaning a mistake. In the books this is (very loosely) based on, that was the reason he got that name. He was so small as a baby that they thought he must have been meant for some non-Viking family and got given to them by mistake.
Swan Ronson
2024-11-13 21:33:05 +0000 UTCToothless is certified baby and very cute. Also pretty sure the dad was voiced by Gerard Butler.

2024-11-13 21:30:42 +0000 UTCI recommend watching the TV Shows "Dragons Riders of Berk", "Dragons Defenders of Berk" and "Dragons Race to the Edge" before watching the second movie. Pretty sure the first two were even made before the second movie and the third one just makes the whole series flow into the second movie so much better and has so much character development that helps get the characters to their second movie states. Please watch those first.
King of flames
2024-11-13 21:26:24 +0000 UTCGreat series, both the movies and the animated shows. (Sad they don't tie in as much with each other even if the animated series is supposedly cannon). Chronologically it goes Movie 1 Dragon riders of Berk Dragon defenders of Berk Race to the edge Movie 2 Movie 3
Speed1247
2024-11-13 21:23:28 +0000 UTCA moment that a lot of people seem to miss is after Stoick tells Hiccup that he's not his son, after he walks out of the door he pauses and steps back and you can see in his face that he knows he went too far.

2024-11-13 21:17:47 +0000 UTCThere is in fact an animated series that covers the events between HttyD 1 and 2 as well as one that takes place between 2 and 3. They're not mandatory, but they're both fun watches.

2024-11-13 21:01:04 +0000 UTCChronological order of the franchise is the animated series then the second movie then the third movie Correction it's more complicated here is the true order: 1. How to Train Your Dragon 2. Legend of the Boneknapper Dragon 3. Book of Dragons 4. Dragons: Gift of the Night Fury 5. DreamWorks Dragons both seasons 6. Dragons: Dawn of the Dragon Racers 7. Dragons: Race to the Edge all seasons 8. How to Train Your Dragon 2 9. How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World 10. How to Train Your Dragon: Homecoming
