Dandadan 1x7

depression

Comments

Every good anime needs to have that Violet Evergarden episode 10

MarakamiSG

I am chidi from the good place because this broke me. Im a manga reader, i knew what was coming but they did it so much justice im crying anyway.

Kieren

I haven't openly sobbed at any media in so damn long... 31 years old, eating dinner while watching the funny show about gobbling weenies and now I am a sobbing mess with no battery on my phone to call my mom and tell her I love her.

Dain Greywall

god damn. not even 2 min in

Cole Savoie

the way Alicia was full crying got me going in full tears.

HappyMeal 4Fun

Thanks

Chronos Hoffman

Kinda but it's a rough ride to get there 😔

paul staber

Asking for a spoiler, does the episode end on a positive note?

Chronos Hoffman

I wouldn't mind if they retconned that a teeny bit and had Aira meet up with the daughter all grown up or something. It would probably be emotional and heartwrenching too, but hopefully in happier circumstances.

Carus Lumen

I swear. It gets sadder everytime I rewatch the episode..

i'm a human being

NOW YOUR ASS CAN GO WATCH THE 3RD TRAILER FOR THIS SHOW. and maybe throw in the amv Creepy Nuts did for this anime. it goes HARD

Easy Mode - A.I

I cried when I watched this episode, but this time I started crying much earlier

Xandarian Games

well this episode was a gutpunch

Gildarts1#fan

7:10 Alicia: I guess we're not learning more about her. I really thought we were." 13:15 "I want to learn more about her, though." 23:15 "FUCK!"

Carl Rigney

This episode, That POV of her rushing through the streets to chase after her daughter, they nailed that too well,,, uncomfortably well.. For those that don't get it, that scene, the loud breathing the way the focus shifts the stuttering jerky frame rate like everything is slow but also fast at the same time... That is the experience of having adrenaline push you past any normal limits. you should be unconscious, pain should stop you, your coordination is gone, your senses chaotic without focus, it is the epitome of Do or Die. You are practically a mindless animal driven by something to go and go until you drop. Its shocking they managed to animate that, you can't film that, its recreated frame by frame from someone's personal experience... AMAZING STUFF

I don't think the term "prostitute" is bad. The way I see it "sex worker" is an umbrella term for anyone who works in the sex industry, prostitute, porn star, adult voice actors, phone sex operator, stripper etc. Where as "prostitutes" specifically have physical sex with someone for money. My argument is most sex work is legal, like porn and stripping, but what people want is for "prostitution" to be legalised. It's prostitutes that need more legal protection and rights, true, so do other sex workers such as porn stars, but prostitutes are the most at risk. I'm pro all sex work as long as it's consenting, human, adults, (I have to add human as some people have been known to pimp animals). I just don't like people acting like prostitute is a dirty or shameful word. And I think using the term sex worker can be confusing, do you mean having sex with members of the public for money or filming having sex with other professionals preformers? I don't think either is immoral or shameful, but they are each treated different standards, rights and protections. And I think the destination is nessassry both for clarity and honesty out of respect for the increase in danger.

Twiska Brand

She was likely in a similar situation as Denji at the start of chainsawman, deep in debt with very bad people... The dress was storefront and expensive it feel like it was a symbol of everything she wanted to give to her daughter but couldn't. She took cash from her "savings" that was probably for a debt repayment, the daughters birthday was soon and the mother was desperate to feel that she wasn't a failure of a parent. The dress was expensive from how much cash she took out of the envelope and so there wasn't enough to pay the debt collectors or yakuza or w/e scum can be imagined. Such a brutal and tragic story that they don't say anything, they just show it and if you know, you know...

AngieAngelFish

Too quick.

Darby D Davis

Woodchipper;feet-first.

Sean A. Crofts

This show continues to impress me on so many levels. It's such a tiny detail, but the way they handled the mouth to mouth sticks out. There's no sexualization of Aira, no Okarun being flustered. In a show with a lot of partial nudity and bawdy humor we don't even see their lips touch. It shows a lot of (sadly uncommon in anime) respect for Aira and the scene being depicted. And of course then there's the whole rest of the episode which speaks for itself. T_T

Usually Shalune

Those "men" and their bosses need to have their lungs pulled out of their backs, or be staked on a fire ant mound, with 0 shade.

Darby D Davis

From what I’ve seen of other comments and seeing the manga panel on twitter is that the mom was reunited with her daughter in the afterlife. The daughter looks the same which is something we don’t need to think too much about 🫠🫠🫠🫠🫠

Golden Witch Beatrice

I still remember getting to this point in the manga, I was all like, "What the fuck?" I had not been expecting this kind of feeling out of a goofy action romcom.

wiski

In the manga we see both the mother and daughter walking away in the end so it seems they both died

Råger Nilson

Alicia starting the episode woth bright eyed optimism: "You know the vibes!" No Alicia. We did not know the vibes. We know now.

Sleepy Hydra

God damn it I am crying everytime someone is reacting to this episode blind..... It hits so damn hard even in the manga....

DecoyBlackMage

Honestly about the whole sex worker vs prostitute thing, I think most sex workers are less concerned with the terminology than they are with the current state of sex work. I use the term sex worker because it’s more all encompassing while prostitution seems a little more narrow in the scope of the actual job. I haven’t really seen a lot of sex workers come out against the term “prostitute”. 😌 Ranting about terminology helps distract from the pain.

Heckle

After that one part, all i wanted to know was "what happened to the baby?" I straight up repeated that question like 6 or 7 times. Human traffickers should all be subjected to the most brutal methods of execution ever concieved of by human kind.

Darby D Davis

No budget as in unlimited budget, this was fantastic.

PrivateXimmy

they took my favourite panel from the manga, then made it into an even greater art piece, all to hurt me. 10/10 no notes

Jadedjayde

I like how he's still flustered not because she's a girl but because it's a literal life and death scenario and he's trying to remember how to do CPR.

Malcorpse

Yeah, I cried.

Pcdruid

Watching this for the first time here in the middle of an express lane at work was the biggest mistake I could have made. I came in thinking a was gonna be heehee haha’ing. Now I’m stuck here explaining to my coworker why I’m in tears 😭

Rubysoul

This episode beat me up and took my lunch money

Ej

That episode was a masive gut punch. So good tho.

NebulaNyx

the scene with them both looking into the night sky is suppose to hint at that I'm pretty sure especially when pared with what Aria said in the scene.

Spicy Noodles

When I saw this ahead of time, I knew Alicia was going to bawl her eyes out. I was (unfortunately) right. This truly was a great episode

JTCRASH

They went a more 'artistic' route but i preferred the raw panels in the manga. Felt more emotional.

Azel !!

It hadn't crossed my mind on my first watch, but there's something about the OST that plays during the less distressing parts of the flashbacks that is REALLY reminiscent of the OST from the game "ib", which I haven't thought of in years but IIRC is another very good piece of gut-punch media

Chaxinitus

Yea that's my only gripe with the episode. In the manga it was clear that she moved on with her daughter but other than that it was a great episode!

ZZ_Top

I completely underestimated how the anime would do this moment. I knew it was gunna be a downer but goddamn they turned a punch into a haymaker. Also they really said “no budget” on this episode

Ghost

That whole backstory felt like a short film, i love that they don’t just prioritize making fight scenes look good

FmlDoonski85

Silky's backstory was the most uncomfortable I've been watching an anime in YEARS, and this is with the knowledge of what happened in the manga. I'm glad that Aira at least let her pass on peacefully, though I wish they showed her going into the afterlife with her daughter. Next time: some goddamn levity.

ZeoHas

Yeah, this episode made me cry more than I ever thought I would with this show.

Gekido

This was a sucker punch. I came into this episode expecting more comedy and fun ghost fights. Then they hit me in the gut with one of the saddest things I’ve seen in anime. Damn. Still a great episode, but just damn.

BakaSama

I’m glad they didn’t do stupid shit with Ken give CPR to Aira, like “I cAnT gIVe MoUtH tO mOuTh ShEs A pReTtY gIrL aNd MoMo Is RiGhT hErE” *cue wacky sound effect number 4* So many shows do something similar and it pisses me off so much , it’s played like a man and a women can’t interact without some romantic or sexual undertones

Big Fuze

The rare anime that elevates the manga. Science Saru is goated for this.

Ranginald Vagel

Interesting I didn’t interpret it like that, I thought she bled out and died on the road and was dancing non stop as a spirit in the etherial plane as a sort of reverence to her lost daughter and as time passed she lost her memories, eventually latching on to aira after being semi reminded of what she lost. One reason I thought this was when Aira picked up the ball the world around her became so vibrate as she could perceive spiritual energies and that night sky looked the same as the background of the women dancing

Big Fuze

And now im bawling a 2nd time because of this episode T-T

Noel

Man, this hit hard. I remember reading this way back and feeling a bit down afterward. But seeing this animated made me cry as I was trying to enjoy my lunch. My dumb ass should have known better.

Pepe D. Silvia

Probly good timing to record this episode offline so you could have a proper depression nap after 😅 Wonderful ep tho, I never expected *that* level of gut-punch

cyberspacecat

I thought the sad OST sounded like the slow devil man crybaby theme and it is acually the same composer

Fenronin (Dorian Dubourg)

this episode made me feel like cyberpunk Edgerunners did in the end. so many emotions. Amazing episode but FML

mld-Drake

Ok, Ghost = trauma. We in for an emotionnal ride. I wasn't prepared for this ep.

rouyrre du colibri

God I still can't stop crying

Joey Cat

This episode was something, I cried so fucking hard in the 2 and now 3 times I’ve watched this episode. This was tragically beautiful, and I sobbed uncontrollably

Kayden

This is why this is anime of the year for myself. The animation, direction, and story telling are all top notch.

CJ Garcia

So they didn't change it then? Are we watching the same episode?

Erik Nilsson

So? Alicia instantly got both...

Erik Nilsson

10:35 - IS THAT A JOJO'S REFERENCE? PART 3?

Easy Mode - A.I

I cried when I read this, and just now. Probably when I fell in love with Dandadan.

Mashiro

The manga makes clearer that the mother was selling her body to support her child and that she commits unalive at the end by dancing of of a roof. There is also a panel at the end showing her joining her child in heaven, so she did manage to pass on.

Joel Sasmad

I mean she def jumps off in this one too, you can see the vista and the street lights turning. The only change is the shot of her performing a Jete off the edge of the skyline, it’s a close up of a pirouette. The spinning lights at the end of the shot, those are *street lights*.

PrivateXimmy

For an anime about finding a kids Weiner and balls and episode like this caught me off guard, it's been since anohana that I've cried this much to anime.

Andrew Hopkins

I respect the ambiguity, but it really is nice to know both found peace in the afterlife.

PrivateXimmy

fuck this episode ruined me

Nim

They still imply both here, but it is a little less explicit than the manga. I wish they animated the page of her and the daughter going into the afterlife together.

ZeoHas

If it gives you at least some relief in the panel that we didn't get to see in the Show. while Aria was wishing for both of them to reunite in a better world, both of them Mother and Daughter were walking hand in hand into the light.

Antarael Dulacre

This just the beginning of SADadan 😭

Middyrose

This anime has god damn range. It can make you laugh and ask “WTF is going on?” when a girl is fondling a testicle the entirety of one episode and then tear your heart out and stomp on it in the next. What an amazing episode!

Gai Valentine

This story was sad in the manga of course, but the fleshed it out and made it so DESTRUCTIVE in the anime. Science Saru knocked this adaptation out of the park and made my favorite anime of the year. And if the season ends juat as strong, it will stick in my top 5 of all time

Craig

I caught up with the show last week, impatiently waiting for thurday and got this, this is not the vibes I expected nor needed but woah was it good. also the "well someone else is going to cry watching this" was on point

Nours

Just.... owwwwww!

Seraphem

This episode really hit me hard. I love everything about it. The animation, the OST and even the direction, *chef's kiss*. I watched a bunch of reactors reacting to this episode an I cried EACH AND EVERY TIME. This episode elevated Dan Da Dan on my top animes to watch.

Omokage23

I read the manga and it hits just as hard there as well. This is just the first.

Thomas Garcia

Wasn’t expecting the funny show about a ghost eating a guy’s ween to have such an emotional gut punch.

Knight1201

Darn, I was hoping Aria would somehow find the daughter and make sure she’s ok now.

Knight1201

🥺

PrivateXimmy

The show is just like op 80% comedy and laughter 20% pain and the 20%pain becomes 100%pain that’s like op and dandadan are in my top 1 and 2 they are similar

Coolfun1234e

Antarael Dulacre

Welp this is why you are my favorite reactor. You understood everything. Thank you for reacting to this and I can't wait for you to see the rest of what this story offers.

Jacob Cash

I was really, really looking forward to your reaction to this.

Nate Zabinski

This is a PSA to hug your mom.
