Pretty sure they wrote them in a different language (Samoan and Tokelauan, Tuvaluan, Māori, etc...). You might be confusing the Taihitian with the fact that this was the first feature film translated to Tahitian.

It would’ve worked better if he rewrote the story to be pure fiction(where none of the “good guys” were slavers) instead of sticking to the heavily biased and inaccurate narrative of the book.

But anyway it has a very similar feel with how they handle spirituality. Following an post ice age Inuit Native American boys journey to be a man and to find meaning of his totem or spirit guide. Overall great film with Joaquin Phoenix voicing the main character.

Yes it's a copyright nightmare but if you don't know the history, I think you'll love the show. So many smart theater choices and the some and themes grow after each watch through. And I always cry during the last minute of the show. Lin Manuel Miranda is an absolute treasure!

I recently actually watched a therapist react to this movie and he pointed out a detail that I now love. In the song, I am Moana, the line of "the call isn't out there at all. It's inside me" is very meaningful. Before, she was singing about how the ocean was calling her and how she was chosen. Now saying the call is actually from inside her is basically her choosing to do this and embracing who she really is, leading up to the amazing delivery of "I am moana" at the end
