I was very prone to sympathetic humiliation, and this episode hit that to its core for me, from the discomfort of being ignored while bragging about such perceptively minimal feats (struggling to lift a stick where the others are lifting anchors and populated stands), to the embarrassment of him ripping his pants, to the awkwardness of his gag boring everyone else as he ran it into the ground with such desperation. I remember feeling so uncomfortable with the episode when I was a kid that I would change the channel or leave the room whenever it was on. Even now, twenty-some years later, I still found myself reflexively skipping most of the episode. Needless to say, I completely forgot that there was a song at the end.

My father has had multiple heart issues over the last couple of years. My uncle and one of my coworkers died from complications related to Covid that they refused to seek treatment for until they had no option because they were convinced by right-wing grifters that it was completely made-up, and refused to believe they had it to their dying breaths. Poverty in my state is high. Homelessness in my state is high. General cost of living remains high. Insurance and medical costs continue to grow. And I say all of this purely in regards to where I live specifically, not even accounting for the wider issues affecting the world at large. All of it just within the last few years, nevermind the rest of what life has been throwing around for the other 10+ years that have passed since I became an adult and started paying more attention to the world around me. Yes, I am in fact pretty jaded. I still find fun and happiness in my life. I enjoy being around my family. I have fun gaming. I have fun watching and interacting with streams on Twitch and Youtube. I have fun reading and writing. I have fun talking with my friends and coworker about movies, games, and life in general. I would argue that sympathizing with a character who is tired of dealing with his terrible job, his greedy dick of a boss, and his neighbors who are fundamentally incapable of reading the room and constantly violating his boundaries no matter how clear he makes it that he wants to be left alone says little about how “unfun” I’ve become. Feel free to take your "wake-up call" and shove it.

So studying philosophy means finding the underlying assumptions and perspective behind any ideology, belief, or system and then developing your own personal perspective and understanding of it. Understanding ideas better is still completely useless on its own but, in conjunction with literally any practical skill, it can make your personal goals far clearer, your mind far sharper, and people way less confusing.

But I changed my mind a little bit when I heard about a guy who was a traffic-philosopher in my country (Netherlands). His entire job was thinking about the ethics of traffic design, how to make things more equitable, how to account for the most amount of people when designing traffic. And there are many philosophers that write books or are employed by different industries to deal with ethics. This ends up indirectly influencing those industries. Philosophy is important whenever there is a policy that affects a lot of people. For that reason many end up working in government or getting a law or business degree after. This kinda proves it is not that solid of a career path on its own, but combined with some other career it can be useful.
