⭐ Steven Universe The Movie: Watch Along & Analysis

Comments

It's hard to put into words how much I love this movie. And I have so much to say There are so many interesting themes going on here. Steven, who used to be such a caring and understanding person, is so done with trying to help everyone. He's emotionally exhausted and just plain done. He just wants to finally live his life in peace, but here comes yet another gem his mother hurt and worst of all, it's someone who needs his brand of kindness more than any other gem we've seen so far (excluding maybe Lapis. Actually, not even Lapis was this vengeful.). And Spinel as a whole is such an interesting character to me, because I feel there is a bit of relatability to her for people who feel like they've been rejected, left behind, or forgotten by the people they care about. It shows that even people with good souls can be deformed and turned into something cruel if mistreated poorly enough. The songs are a major point to talk about too. Every one of the songs in the movie are really good, but a few stand out to me in particular. Drift Away gets me to cry every. Single. Time. I watch this movie. I found Spinel to be interesting right from her introduction and Other Friends, but Drift Away got me to love her completely. There was something so relatable about the lines "You keep on turning pages for people who don't care, people who don't care about you. And still it takes you ages to see that no one's there, see that no one's there, see that no one's there. Everyone's gone on without you." And then there's just that crushing silence for a moment as what she sung sinks in and it just gets me sobbing every time. Found is that immediate comfort after the hurt found in Drift Away. After standing, unmoving, filled with uncertainty, completely alone for 6 millennia, this poor, lost, forgotten gem has someone offering his hand in friendship to her and the relief and joy she feels is so completely overwhelming. It just moves me to more tears. I only wish she had gotten a god damn hug at some point. With True Kinda Love it may not be clear at first, but Garnet is actually singing to Spinel, telling her that despite her horrible past experiences, despite her rage and pain and suffering, if she just opens her eyes she'll be able to see the truth. That they'll be willing to help her if she lets them. And when Steven's part comes it's just a whole new tidal wave of emotion. It's at this point he shows that he's completely opening his heart up to her and asking her to do the same so he can help her. He acknowledges how dark a place she's in and will do anything to pull her out. Not just for his friends or his planet or his happily ever after, but for her sake too. And finally, Change. It feels like he's chipping away at the walls Spinel's built up around her with every word. And you can see it in her face for just half seconds at a time. That doubt. It's starting to sink in how wrong what she's doing is and it shows how badly she wants to believe in him. She wants to be better, but she doesn't believe she can. She doesn't believe she deserves it. She thinks she's nothing but a bad guy and that's all she can be.
