They have said several times in the series up to here that Mira was an S-class wizard before she lost he powers, I am pretty sure that is where Kat got this.

Long comment approaching (how do I sign up to be on the podcast again? because sometimes I just can't shut up)
Oh the questions about Jellal/Mystogan start up again :P Mystogan is not the same as Jellal's twin/thought projection, just so you know. He's a separate person. That's all I will say on the subject for now.
I'll have to think about the symbolism of the church because there's another fight later that is based in the church, so now you've got me curious. Now I'm just thinking about Hunchback of Notre Dame, I may go watch that after I get off here.
I'm glad that you're looking for symbolism and minor details like that, though, because I feel like there's a lot of subtlety in Fairy Tail's storytelling that some people miss when watching or reading this series. Like one of the things that I think people miss here (which is understandable because there's so much going on with Laxus's character) is Natsu's development. You said something about Natsu still having faith in Laxus a couple of episodes ago, and that's important, but not for Laxus.
(now for my dissertation on Natsu up until this point of the series)
Natsu views the world in black-and-white terms at this point of the story. The guild is his standard, everyone in it is family, no questions asked. If you attack the guild, you're an enemy, no questions asked. He's not a very forgiving person yet, either (which is why the scene the anime added at the end of the Galuna Island arc when Lyon's friends came down to apologize drives me crazy because manga Natsu would NOT have welcomed them with open arms and so it throws off his character development).
So now he's presented with the idea that someone that has always been in the guild might also be an enemy of the guild. When Gajeel calls Laxus an enemy, look at the expression on Natsu's face. This idea is hurting him. Not only that, this idea is coming from Gajeel, a guy that was introduced to Natsu as an enemy of the guild. To make this even crazier, this is also Natsu's first tag-team fight. He was very much a 'This is my fight, don't butt in' kind of guy before no matter what the situation was. So now, not only is Natsu fighting alongside somebody for the first time, he's fighting alongside somebody that he saw as an enemy in order to fight someone that he's always seen as family. So a LOT of development for Natsu here, but it's very subtle and can be missed by the light show that is Laxus right now. (okay, Natsu dissertation done)
Oh man, I was hoping you were going to finish the arc tomorrow since it ends on ep 48 (which is the last episode on Netflix, too). Oh well, I can wait a week if you can.
I feel like you said something about looking up favorite ships in Fairy Tail, but I would not recommend that at this point in the series, there might be some serious spoilers!
Long comment is done. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

Kat....I know you need to keep the sound down, but to be honest...The subtitles in this series are done so lazily....You are missing a lot not hearing the dub.....whoever did the sub for this series should never get work again

Lol, Jellal kinda reminds me of that Bakura scene in yugioh abridged
"WHAT!? There are 2 bakuras?"
"If you think this is confusing just wait until season 5 when there's like 4 of me running around!"
Edit: Oh also on the topic of timeline. Episode 1 of Fairy Tail is listed July 2nd X784 and the Battle of Fairy Tail is October 15, X784 so roughly 3.5months in total

Not sure if Kat will see this but I’m assuming she was talking about Fried when she said Mirajane is comparable to a S Class Wizard but none of the Thunder Legion are S Class.
