After you finished this season of SAO, you can read up to volume 18. Volumes 19 and 20 are the Moon Cradle arc (The one I said will most likely not be adapted). I can’t give anything away for this arc since it would be a pretty big spoiler, but although it’s kind of understandable why they are not doing it, it would be better if they had. And like I said before, Volume 21 (Unital ring 1) barely released in English (Try to avoid seeing the cover for this volume as it spoils part of the ending to Alicization). As for fan translations, the main people who translate SAO (Dreadful Decoding) aren’t going to translate it since the official one would release by the time they try to finish it themselves. The other ones not translated by them are almost unreadable, so yeah. Also, if you want to read any of the short-stories and stuff like that you would have to go to the dreadful decoding website where they have a most of the things that haven’t been officially translated.
Something that might be a bit confusing when you read the novels is the chronological order of the Aincrad arc. It’s completely all over the place and there is even a part that was completely cut from the anime. If you read them like they were released, the first novel doesn’t include the stuff with Silica, Lizbeth, Sachi (and the moonlit black cats), Yui, or the Murder mystery episodes. Most of those happen in volume 2 while the murder mystery happens in volume 8 (Which has one of those cut scenes as well). To add on to that, episode 2 of Aincrad was just a butchered version of the first arc of progressive, so that’s not in any of the mainline novels. Side note: All of Progressive and most of volume 2 happens in between chapter 3 and 4 of volume 1. There is a pretty good explanation to this, so I guess that will be part of the fun-fact of today a little bit later.
As another reason to check out the game or recordings of them since this one is no longer available either, there is one event that has Eldrie’s backstory and if I remember correctly, there is even a fully animated scene of him fighting Sortilina during the tournament. After you finish this season, you can just search up “Sword Art Online Alicization Rising steel events” and there is a playlist of all the events right there (Should be the first thing). You also said something about slice of life stuff for the knights, and for that you can play the game Sword Art Online Alicization: Lycoris. It’s an actual RPG that is basically a retelling of the first half of the Alicization arc (to an extent) then has a bunch of original content. It’s kind of hard to get to, but eventually you have events of Kirito interacting with the knights in random stuff (This game completely ignores War of Underworld so none of those events happen.) It can be pretty wholesome, but it gets pretty annoying to me as this is basically Kirito having an actual harem (and becomes the most dense person in existence). As in, in this game, the girls are 100% in love with him and are always doing stuff to get closer to him (and there is a lot more fan service included). This game is part of a series of games, but apart from some new original characters that don’t appear in this game (although I think they were including them later as part of an update), you won’t really miss anything story-wise.
I saw a comment mention the golden eyes and I wanted to touch upon that. That’s probably one of the most inconsistent features of the anime as it’s supposed to be when a character uses the Incarnation system, that happens—except it doesn’t work on any other character when they’ve used it (Like Asuna in season 1) and is also activated in moments when Kirito doesn’t use incarnation.
Now for the fun fact/author’s story: Reki originally wanted to become a manga artist, but eventually gave up on that as he noticed drawing was quite difficult to do (You can still find some of his original concept art of SAO if you search deep enough and some of his SAO manga is also online). Soon after he decided to turn to simply writing novels; with this came Sword Art Online, the first novel he ever wrote. It was originally written for a publishing contest that was going to take place in 2002 but he realized he had written much more than the page limit, and even after cutting a lot out, it was still too long, so he gave up (This is the reason why the Aincrad arc so short). He then decided to publish the story on his website where it was met with a lot of positivity and was asked to write more, which he did. That’s when he began filling in some gaps (Hence the story being all over the place) until he ended the series with the Alicization arc in 2007. Immediately after, he decided he would try to enter the 2009 contest for the same publisher, so he started working on a story named “Absolute Acceleration Burst Linker” (later renamed to Accel World) and submitted it in 2009. Needless to say, it won first place and was published soon after. Right around that time, one of his editors found his website and read all of SAO that he had published. After he finished, he asked Reki if they could publish it too, which they did, and it immediately blew up and became what he is most famous for now (But he did say he wished more people checked out Accel World). Also, because this was written back in the day, you can tell when reading how much more amateurish the early SAO novels are compared to the newer stuff, even things that released at the same time. (This comment is over 1000 words long…)

Yeah if you go back to episode 1 of season 3, and the meeting Asuna, Kirito and Sinon had at the Dicey Cafe. She was asking Asuna and Kirito to participate in BoB5, because the "first winner" of BoB came back in BoB4 and won using only his hands. Also apparently his GGO handle Subtilizer, in the original Japanese, translates as "The one who steals souls".
One important thing to notice about Kirito and his strength levels, watch his eyes, when his eyes are gold that is when things are off the rails, when he "breaks the system", ie when he refused to die and killed Heathclif, pretty sure he also did that when he was fighting Administrator.
If you want to know where to safely stop on the light novels. You can stop when they stop putting Alcization in the title. I think that is like book 19 or 20. I need to read them as well. I am only caught up to Phantom Bullet in the light novels.
I actually know of a stressful action packed series full of death, that they DID make a happy slice of life cooking show spinoff anime where no one dies. One of us will eventually get you to react to that series.
Something very important at the end of the episode. Emperor Vecta's Dark Knight buddy from the real world. He RECOGNIZED Asuna, as the Knights of the Blood Oath's Lightning Flash Asuna.
