One thing I would like to add about Vivi is that she is actually pretty strong but was weak in vital ways that a leader can't be. She obtained a very high position in a huge criminal organization off her own merit which is quite an accomplishment. That being said, her major weakness was that she was not willing to allow others to put their lives on the line for her or the things she believes in. She was only willing to put her own life on the line because she didn't want to see anyone die, bloodshed in a conflict was something she wanted to avoid at all costs and that's something a leader can't be afraid of doing in the harsh realities of the world. Luffy's ability to understand that and get Vivi to realize that she can't just rely solely on herself and put only her life on the line is one of my favorite parts in Alabasta. I always thought it was an interesting and great part when Luffy agrees with Crocodile about the naivete of Vivi, who believes the battle can end without anyone dying. Luffy who may seem like the most naive character a lot of the time has a very real understanding of the harsh realities of the world and knows that some battles can't be ended without bloodshed. Even though that my be the case and Luffy knows it, he still will do everything in his power to help his friends, even if what they believe in is naive. He will do whatever it takes to keep that bloodshed to a minimum even though it's unavoidable. Prime example of doing whatever is necessary is in these episodes where he uses his own damn blood to actually hit Crocodile!!!! Talk about being super metal and badass!!! You gotta love Luffy
