I don't think it's overanalyzing to say that Piccolo is showing clear signs that he is not purely evil.

At this point in Piccolo's life he is simply consumed with the thought of fufilling his fathers wish for total world domination. He is not shocked at the friendship that Goku shared with Krillin but rather that Krillin was able to survive against him and still manage to stand after the fight. I do agree that he probably has these doubts about family but in this situation, at this point in his life, he is most definitely more concerned with the fact that he couldn't easily beat Krillin (a boy that his fathers underling was able to kill only 3 years prior) and that this may cause him some trouble in a world takeover.
