With the whole food situation, I don’t remember if the anime properly covered it, but this quote from the LN regarding the death gun incident basically covers that: “Eating ‘food’ in the virtual world caused a false sense of fulfillment that lasted several hours, even if the user hadn’t eaten anything in the real world. The ultra-hardcore gamers found that this cut down on food costs and gave them more time to play, so it wasn’t rare to hear about players who only ate one meal every two days.” Just to confirm, SAO was originally written in 2001 and released in 2002 on his website (After not being able to make the page limit for the contest he was entering SAO in). Reki finished writing SAO (At the time the ending was Alicization) in 2007 and eventually began publishing the Aincrad arc in 2009 after winning the writers contest that same year (Through Accel World). I agree that SAO’s opening have this same feel to them. All the artist are great as well, my personal favorite being LiSA and ReoNa, though the AGGO opening is my least favorite one. As for the Accel World openings, I personally don’t like them. They are very different to SAO and have a certain feeling that I can’t really describe. For some reason, the first time I watched Accel World, the first opening had a certain part in the beginning that always made my head hurt. Speaking of hurt, that scene with LLENN and that guy is definitely brutal. I would imagine if that were happen, the adrenaline would be the only thing keeping someone from passing out, otherwise yeah, there’s no way they are handling that pain. Since you brought up the Attack on Titan manga, I needed to say that ending was definitely something. I can’t say I hated it like most people were saying, but I can’t say I liked it very much either. Anyway, if you are ever interested in the other SAO stories (Including spin offs) there are a few ones that like AGGO have never been said to be cannon, but Reki has never said it wasn’t either. The first one that is also and Alternative series is “Sword Art Online Alternative: Clover’s Regret”. I don’t know much about this one since I haven’t read it yet (Since only fan translations exist), but I do know that the series takes place in the game where Yuuki met the other guild members. The next one is a manga called “Sword Art Online: Girl’s Ops”. By the title you can probably guess that this series revolves around the girl members of the group (Not including Asuna). This is another one that hasn’t been confirmed cannon, but apart from a guild that has never been mentioned in the original, there isn’t anything to go against it being part of the main series. If I remember correctly, this is a series that Reki really wanted to be made so I doubt that he wouldn’t want it to not be cannon. There are two other manga series that are based off the games named Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization (HR for short) and Sword Art Online Alicization: Lycoris. Hollow Realization is complete and has an English release while the other one isn’t finished in japan and has no English release. HR is basically a fun spin-off that happens in SA:O which stands for Sword Art: Origins. (Not to be confused with SAO). It’s basically a new game that takes place before the great separation that led up to Aincrad being formed. As much as a spin-off as it is, the great separation is actually something canon to SAO which is slightly explored in Progressive later on. Since it happens in the game universe there are a few characters that don’t appear in the main series. On the topic of the games, I recently replayed some of the games and I got to say, they still aren’t very good. My biggest gripe with the games (Apart from the alright gameplay) is still Kirito and how he acts in them (Which I think I have mentioned before). For example, in one of the scenes the girls are (For some reason) all in his room and talking about him. Since in the games he actually has a harem, every girl is basically saying things they like about him, and whatever, while Kirito overhears it by accident. Once he is caught, they basically make him choose which of the girls he prefers. Normally you would think that’s easy since he’s dating Asuna and all that, but of course this Kirito can’t decide (And he doesn’t). His relationship with Asuna is basically non-existent apart from those two saying they are in a relationship. He is even shown having an attraction to Leafa on some occasions through fan service of course, which there is a lot of. (There’s also a part where they ask him who’s chest out of all the girls he prefers and he chooses Yui, but that’s another story) Anyway, if you ever want to play the games, this is the order: Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment Sword Art Online: Lost Song Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization Accel World VS. Sword Art Online: Millennium Twilight Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet Sword Art Online Alicization: Lycoris Technically the first game is “Sword Art Online: Infinity Moment”, but Hollow Fragment is supposed to be the same game with added stuff. As for AW VS SAO, you probably shouldn’t play this one until you catch up with the AW novels since some parts of the game spoil things of the novels. Each game also has an original opening, except for the first one which uses the first opening. I can’t say they are as good as the anime openings, but some of them are pretty good, my favorite being the Fatal Bullet opening done by LiSA.(First season op 1 singer) The best games in my opinion are HR, Fatal Bullet, and Alicization Lycoris. Gameplay wise, Fatal Bullet is my favorite since it’s a third person shooter and you get a custom character. You can customize in the other games as well, but it still doesn’t change the fact you are Kirito (You can even make him into a girl). Fatal Bullet has multiple endings as well, three to be precise. Two of them basically rely on a single obvious choice while the third one is a pain to get. Each game takes a decent number of hours to complete, it took me about 40 hours to finish HR. Although, I’ve never been good at RPG’s so take that into consideration. As a fun fact: In a recent interview, Reki confirmed that Pina is in fact a girl. He said he never really put much thought into it, but since the voice actress of Pina said she always imagined Pina to be a girl, he decided to make it canon. Also, I don’t know if they’ve ever mentioned it in the anime, but Silica decided on the name Pina because that’s the name of her cat in real life. (The cat appears in Girl’s Ops near the beginning)
