Well, we are finally at Accel World. Like I’ve mentioned before, I’m pretty excited about this series. When I originally watched this series, I didn’t really enjoy it too much and was pretty low on my list of favorite anime. When I got older however, I really began to see what made this series so good to begin with. Now, I own every single light novel volume currently out in English.
To answer your question, Accel World was the first novel that he published. Before this he had finished writing SAO and began writing The Isolator. On the anime side, both Accel World and SAO got an anime adaptation in 2012.
As for why it never receive a season 2, the official reason Reki stated was because the studio (Studio Sunrise) was too busy with other project to make a season 2. What I’ve seen other people say however is that it was because the anime didn’t do too well because of the second arc it adapts.
From what I’ve seen, and how I felt when I first watched it, not many people like the second arc. After reading it myself years later, I’ve grown to really enjoy the second arc. (Keep in mind that younger me wasn’t too fond of the Mother’s Rosario arc when I first watched SAO. Not to say those two arcs are similar because they are nowhere near, but you get the point). I don't know if that really was a reason, but the fact that this anime flew under the radar when it comes to anime talked about today is undeniable. There was a little buzz about Accel World around the time that Alicization finished because the anime added something that references something from the AW novels, but it died out soon after.
Also, AW happens around 20 years after SAO. So basically Kirito would be in his late 30s.
Anyway, from now on with this series I will make a sort of list to point out anything that relates to SAO that is referenced that you either noticed or didn’t. I will also include things you should keep in mind as the series progresses.
So, here it is:
-The “Acceleration” process is described identically to the how the process used to go into the Underworld in Alicization was described. (1,000 times faster than the real world).
-Like the Underworld, when you are inside the game you can feel pain when you are hurt instead of having the pain resistance given in other games during SAO.
-During the installation of Brain Burst, the application name was “BB2039” (Although won’t be mentioned in the anime, you should keep this in mind for the series as a whole)
-The cameras that are used to create the world are referenced by Kirito during the Phantom Bullet arc in season 2. (Specifically he mentions that they are starting to implement them).
That’s all I can think of for now, but there are definitely more things to come.
As for your theory about Kuroyukihime being related to Kirito and Asuna, like you said, it has already been debunked. They do reveal who her parents are (Specifically her mother) and its honestly pretty exciting stuff in itself. But of course, you will have to wait to figure that out yourself (I could tell you but even then, I doubt you will recognize them since it requires some reading on the SAO side of novels and such.). Sadly, that’s revealed in Vol. 23 and like I’ve mentioned before, this only covers the first 4 volumes.
Also, something that I just randomly felt like I should mention while writing this, if you split Kuroyukihime’s name into separate Japanese words, it translates to roughly Black Snow Princess. (Kuro = black, Yuki = Snow, Hime = Princess). One of the sub versions that I watched used to translate her name for some reason instead of leaving it Kuroyukihime, and I always found it strange the always called by that name. Only later did I find out it was translated (For whatever reason.)
As for hate for this show, I can’t say there is as much as for SAO since it’s less known, but although overall people say this is a lot better than SAO, there are still people hating on it for multiple reason (Including because it was written by Reki).
The main one is the MC. Haruyuki, (or Haru for short) is usually hated on because of his design and/or because they say he is annoying (Because of all the crying an stuff). Although they say he's at least better than Kirito, that doesn’t stop them for hating how he is.
As for overall hate, many times it really just comes from people figuring it out that it’s written by the same person as SAO. Honestly, this is one of those series that since it hasn’t gotten as much attention and has had zero anime youtubers talking about it, those haters can’t parrot what those people are saying and so have no arguments but, SAO bad and this is made by the same person, so this is bad too.
But do keep in mind I haven’t found the same amount of people saying this as whit SAO. I feel like people mainly just like hating on SAO and are willing to put AW up just to push SAO further down. Again, people mainly hate on Haru.
Also, that character who you called cute, the grey one with glasses, is basically Reki’s self-insert character. He served to explain some things that the novel explains through the narrator and not through a character, and is also voiced by Reki himself.
I’ll keep this comment as short as I can and end it here.
For a short fun-fact, (although I gave a few regarding the character’s names) the original name Reki gave the series when he first entered it into the contest that he won wasn’t Accel World. It was originally named, “Absolute Acceleration Burst Linker”. I think you can guess why he renamed it to Accel World.
Side-note, I don’t think Reki has ever spoke too much about his past. The furthest I’ve ever found was that he was in the Manga Studies Club in College and wanted to draw manga himself. But since it was too much work to draw he decided to be a Light Novel Writer instead (I have read some of the SAO short stories he's drawn as manga and the art is pretty alright). Apart from that, there isn’t much about his social life or anything before college. (Keeping in mind that I’m not out here thoroughly investigating every last detail about his life.)
