After seeing so much hate for Reki and his series, having someone praise him as much as you do really feel like a breath of fresh air. I feel like the main problem with Reki’s series is that he never planned for them to be anime so they are written in a way that makes it difficult to adapt without changing things. A-1 studios got lucky that the first parts of SAO weren’t written in the same way as his later work until they got to Alicization when he was much more experienced, and they messed everything up.
Sunrise, the ones adapting Accel World, knew what they were doing and made changes where it was needed, even if it meant rearranging when or how events occur. That’s why I believe this is one of the best adaptations of his work, tied with the Mother’s Rosario arc.
I still remember when Alicization was airing a bunch of people got mad at the studio because they completely skipped over a small tournament that happens near the beginning of Kirito and Eugeo’s journey. I don’t know if you remember it, but in episode 6 when we see Kirito and Eugeo in the swordcraft academy for the first time they mention everything that happened leading up to then. They stayed at a farm for some time living with a small family and helping them out with some stuff before entering the tournament. All of that is shown in the novels but completely skipped in the anime, leaving it as barely a flashback.
AW was also the third series he had written by this point so you can tell that his skill was much higher, especially since it’s after he wrote the Alicization arc.
Speaking of SAO, this episode had a pretty large component that connects the two series. The Incarnation System that was introduced here (Though I don’t know if it was properly translated for yours) was a large factor for Alicization as a whole. The simple fact that it exists in the Accelerated World can bring up many questions behind the creation of Brain Burst. You will learn a lot more later regarding the Incarnation System since for now all of it had already been explained in SAO, but there is some more interesting stuff regarding it.
Since I haven’t done this in a while, here I’ll give you some hate stuff I found under episode 15 (You know, the one that you had quite a lot of insight about). It’s mainly all about Haru, and believe me, there’s a lot more regarding Haru under every episode.
“MC is such a wuss. Always crying when things get rough. It’s astounding he still has friends.”
“sooo, he knows nomi is going to lead them into a trap....but doesn't say or do anything to help them, or try to prevent it.....this MC is a piece of shit. This show has a great premise, but the MC is total shit”
Anyway, you mentioned that you wanted some LN recommendations and I’m someone who buys way more LN’s than I do manga. I even have a few on my shelf that I haven’t read or even know what they are about. I basically just buy LN’s to read eventually (Which explains why I’m always broke).
Here are a few that I would recommend:
— The Isolator
— Eighty-Six (First cour of anime just ended)
— Three Days of Happiness
— I Want to Eat Your Pancreas (This has a movie but it’s nowhere near as good as the LN)
— The Dirty Way to Destroy the Goddesses Heroes
— The Empty Box and Zeroth Maria
— A Sister’s All You Need (This has a pretty good anime adaptation)
I’ve already mentioned The Isolator and Eighty-Six before, one being Reki’s other novel series and the other because the anime is airing currently. Speaking of which, the Eighty-Six anime has been fantastic. A-1 really surprised me with the quality of both the art and adaptation.
Anyway, Three days of happiness and I want to eat your pancreas are some real emotional coming-of-age single volume series. The dirty way to destroy the goddess's heroes is an isekai but the MC is part of the villains (Although the heroes act more like the villains). It’s six volumes long and I wouldn’t call it groundbreaking or anything but it’s pretty entertaining at the very least. The empty box and zeroth maria is a little slow at the beginning but it definitely goes places near the end. It’s pretty short at 7 volumes, but it’s definitely worth it. Lastly, a sister's all you need can be as weird as the title might suggest. But in the end, it’s a very wholesome (?) story involving a bunch of likable characters that each have their own goals and aspirations.
Before, I didn’t know if the Extra edition for SAO (That movie I mentioned some time ago) was canon, but after reading Vol 22 of SAO I can confirm that it definitely is. One of the short stories in that volume is a direct sequel to that one. I can’t say either the movie or this short story are the strongest in the series, but it at least gives some more world-building when it comes to ALO. The other stories from that volume are pretty interesting though, I definitely can’t wait for you to get to that, even if it is a long way from now. Just as an example of something the book covers (Without spoilers of course, unless you consider the first arc of SAO as spoilers), the first story takes place right after Kirito and Asuna get married in SAO and before they bought the log cabin in the woods. Mainly, this story tackles the internal struggle Kirito had at the time regarding his marriage with Asuna. After spending so much time pushing people away, he wasn’t sure that what he felt for her was truly love, or if he was even able to love anyone anymore. That’s just a little something to hype up what normally would be seen as useless side stories.
Anyway, now for the fun fact. Since it was recently the 10 anniversary of SAO being published, there was a whole lot of things set up as a celebration including songs, official art, events, and a bunch of other stuff. All of that is good and all, but it wasn’t just the 10th anniversary of SAO, it was also the anniversary of Accel World. Sadly, there was nothing for that series, the complete opposite to SAO. Reki mentions in one of his books that for as glad as he was for having so much attention on SAO, he was also a little depressed that AW got literally nothing. With that, I also want to say that I’ve noticed that although the comments I write are for AW, they always end up having more SAO stuff in them. All that really has to do with the fact that apart from the LN which I can’t talk about due to spoilers, there really isn’t much regarding AW, and that’s mostly due to its lack of popularity. SAO has so much content that I still haven’t talked about everything, yet I feel like I’ve mentioned most things for AW already. Hopefully, AW can get some boost in popularity at some point and possibly get that season 2 because the series only gets better and better after season 1.
