The princess unlocked the Eclipse gate while Lucy and Yukino were in jail. They went to the dragon graveyard either late on the 4th or super early on the 5th, and they waited for the tournament to start back up on the 6th before they sent the rescue team to get them. So the princess had the keys for a full day on the 5th to do what she needed to do.
