The amount of backstory for a character largely depends on the player...some folks are more heavily into roleplaying than others. Some DMs will actively ask their players for backstory of a certain complexity, others are more lax about it. There's no actual mechanic for integrating player backstory into a campaign; a good DM will find ways to weave each player's backstory into the game, perhaps as part of the 'main quest' or alternately as 'side quest' material. But to be fair, there is also no guarantee that certain character backstory elements will come up, which can be disappointing if players are expecting those story threads to be touched upon. As with all things, it relies on good communication between a DM and their players :-)

I really love this episode! Regarding your question about how many bad rolls there were for Vex’ death to happen: Surprisingly, in this case, only 1 bad roll. Vox Machina just finished a battle with a monster and Vex wasn’t at full health. When Percy triggered the trap and Vex failed her saving throw, she took damage and immediately went unconscious (0 HP). Because of the nature of the trap (i.e. it was a special trap in the temple of the Matron of Ravens), going to 0 HP instantly killed Vex. Matt has really interesting resurrection rules for the world of Exandria, and because of this, resurrection spells or rituals have a chance to fail. You asked if there is something you can watch before watching the next episode, and if you’re interested, you can watch the complete ritual they did for Vex in episode 43 of Campaign 1 (Vex dies soon after the 4:23:30 timestamp). I don’t know if anyone has told you yet, but Kash and Zahra were guest players during the campaign! They were played by Will Friedle and Mary Elizabeth McGlynn, and their characters became fan favorites.
