So we’ve seen the 3 Graces show up again and again, first to Dream when he summoned them to help find his stuff, then for Dr Dee in the diner, next to Rose Walker in the beginning of the Doll’s House and most recently to Calliope. They go by so many names, the Hecate, the Furries, the Weird Sisters, the Kindly Ones, the three who are one and the Fates. You can find references to them from so many sources, from Ancient Greece to modern novels, comics and television shows. Call them whatever you want but one thing we can’t call them is very helpful. They’ll continue to pop up through out the series. With Calliope we have started a new arc called Dream Country, it’s a short arc only contains 4 stories but it is also a pivotal point in the Sandman. This is where the story stops being horror based and begins to move towards more fantasy settings. Not that we will ever leave horror behind fully and some truly horrific stuff is still on the menu. But now the table is set, so to speak, and we will finally begin to see what sets the Sandman apart from other comics. I will be anxiously awaiting these last three stories.

So let’s talk a little bit about trauma. I think it’s one of the main theme’s of the Sandman. Dream’s imprisonment traumatized him and since his escape we can see he has grown from his trauma. This isn’t the same Anthropomorphic Pesonification of Dreams who sentenced Nada to an eternity in hell for spurning him, he’s not even the same person who stormed out on Hob for daring to imply he could be friends with a mortal. Calliope even mentions how much he has changed. The Doll’s House arc shows a lot of trauma, poor Jed, Rose is traumatized by Funland attacking her and we can also see the growth in her from surviving her trauma. Rose is drawn waif like in the earlier part of the Doll’s House but as she becomes the vortex is drawn as fully matured woman, naked as the day she was born so it’s all right in your face. The coda with diary even shows how she has been dealing with her trauma maybe not well but healthily we’re also shown that Jed has retained some innocence after his ordeals. I like how this all plays out for Dream, Rose and Jed, our trauma doesn’t have ruin us, if we can find a way to deal with it healthily.
