I can't wait to see you play the game. But yes the story is about individuality. Neku shut people out because he had his own believes and way of thinking and knew it was right. So why would he listen to other people? All they do is contradict his own worldview. Joshua's game with Kitaniji reflected this struggle. The flawed hypothesis was that different personalities and goals with conflict and clash, causing strife. So he picked a champion who thought like he did, Neku. If Neku can learn and grow throughout the Reaper's Game, he would admit he was wrong. It's funny, Week 1 was Shiki getting Neku to open up. All Joshua did in Week 2 was gaslight Neku and spout rhetoric about him not needing anyone, but by then he didn't believe it anymore. Week 3 showed beat trying to become someone he isn't and Neku called him out on it. My opinion is people sometimes fear expanding their world because they feel they will lose who they are in the process. Beat started acting differently, trying to make plans and such. Neku told him to stop, he is a hard headed an single minded idiot and we need that kind of strong-willed resolve right now. Just because your world expands doesn't mean you have to change who you are. The trick presented is not to make it so everyone thinks the way you do. But to accept the differences of others and let the symphony of concepts to make the music stronger and more beautiful, (using the game's metaphors). As Mr. H puts it, the world is only as big as you allow it to be. Cut everyone off and your world is tiny. The more you let in the greater the world becomes. He coined the phrase, The World Ends with You.
