It was an eventful week, so managed to share the comment only after an end of it. But I watched the Progressive movie and it was amazing. At least on its own – very very good. The only rough edges for me are in how some of it changed stuff in comparison to the novel, but that did not stop me from enjoying the movie at all.
Also, had to go a tier lower from now on, so no more extra SAO chapters… But hopefully I at least helped a bit to push the initial momentum, maybe someone will help one day too)
Chapter 1:
Ha, it looks like we got SAO Christmas story near the Christmas :D And it truly is the one – with the traditional journey of the protagonist through the darkness to change yourself and find the hope for future. A story about an end of one life and beginning of the other. In terms of Aincrad arc – we already saw Asuna’s lowest point – in her memories of the first month since the start of the game of death. Now we’ll see one of Kirito’s – I never really thought about it, but it’s amusing that both of them ended up to be in the same volume.
Yes, the danger of leveling up in SAO is part of the reason that most players never left the edge of Town of Beginnings on the first floor. Not only it is dangerous in itself, it takes a lot of willpower to even start. One of the causes of death of so many players in the first month is due to people trying to fight that fear of death – they simply did not react in time to enemy attacks because of how scary it was to fight. And yes, the existence of your own HP bar only add the pressure to this problem.
… the whole section of Kirito fighting ants makes me want to go back to WoW Classic immediately xD
Honestly, one of the most absurd stuff I’ve heard about SAO, is that anime never explains the levelling…. I mean, how could they even say that Reki knows nothing about gaming, if even that they cannot assume themselves?
+ 1 Argo fan here :)
«I don’t think many of them are stupid enough to do it in the middle of the night when it’s freezing like this» – this line right here, is what I like to assume connects Kirito’s words to Liz from the earlier story in the book, which are in future story-wise. There he mentioned that you can handle the cold in this world without appropriate outfit if you have the willpower to do so. I simply imagine the scene of Kirito endlessly fighting mobs night after night in the middle of December, all in pursue of his goal, so much concentrated on the process, that he long since adapted to ignore the cold. From it we can also assume, that the common cold temperature does not harm players directly. If it was the case, Kirito would’ve used something against it instead of ignoring it. It doesn’t exclude the possibility of freeze damage from certain areas, traps or monsters though.
Klein – remember, what Kayaba said?
Kirito – remember, what Heathcliff said?
…. I *love* that so much. And it wouldn’t be the same, reading it before the end of Aincrad, before you *know* who they are. And you know what’s also crazy about it? Back in the real world, Kayaba was like an idol for Kazuto, while now – Heathcliff’s words have such an effect on Kirito. This is also a very powerful phrase, that Kirito follows to this day. «As long as it’s greater than zero, I have a duty to seek out that possibility to the best of my ability». This is something that, in my opinion, transcends Kirito, games, the book, and could be influential to a reader even in our real world. At least I hope it does, and inspire people to do something good.
Chapter 2:
I like that Kirito being a beta tester, doesn’t just serve him as a single tool in making the character stronger. Instead, it is something that further distance him from others, something that only helped in the very beginning in gaining a small level buff, while the stories like this one showed other reasons why Kirito remained among the best players in the game. And as you discussed – his lack of care for himself at this point of his life – is what allowed him to gain even more levels, separate himself further. So, in the end – Reki explores it not just from the gaming side of things, but primarily from social aspects of it.
I always felt, that Kirito half a year into the SAO was finally ready to start gaining some social interactions. Partially due to how I remember myself as a teenager, when I gained some distance from people my age before began working on gaining experience and talking more again. Kirito going through such events at *such* time in his life perfectly explains his behavior for the next year into the game.
The fact that society made Kirito lie about himself just to experience normal human attitude, others warmth? It’s so sad, yet so real. It took me some time to stop avoiding the topics of some of my favorite stuff when around not just closest friends. Simply because people tend to judge things they barely heard of and you don’t want to get that attitude for simply mentioning one of your favorite stories for example. Same here – how many of the players that have a prejudice against beta testers, actually talked to one, or thought rationally about how *they* feel. How not all of them are actually adults, and how teenagers might not know how to handle such aggression towards them properly... That some of them are kids, who want to survive, too...
Next volume is the Fairy Dance, the ALO arc :D

This short-story is still one of my favorite ones to this day. The fact that it's told in first-person gives so much more emotion to Kirito's character.
On an unrelated note, Argo (The Rat) is mentioned in this story. She's really one of my favorite characters in all SAO, it sucks that she's barely been in the series at all (In the anime at least). She won't be fleshed out, or mentioned, until progressive, but she is a pretty integral part of the series.
Klein is a character that I really wish the series would dive deeper into. I really want to know more about his backstory, but I don't know if we will ever get something like that. The way he cares about Kirito really shows that Klein was one of his first friends in general. Kirito does talk about something regarding his relationship with Klein compared to Eugeo later in Alicization (Which was cut from the anime) that does flesh out what he thinks about him, but he was still there for him all throughout SAO.
Seeing as other characters are getting more development in Unital Ring, I really hope Klein becomes one of them.
