It was cannon at the time, it was re-written in the last dragon ball movie to come out as of now. The core of the story is still canon though, some details have changed and you will see that whenever you get to it. Also you guys could watch DBZ Movie 5, that one takes place before the trunks arc.

You guys can totally watch movie 5, Cooler's Revenge before returning to the show. It's not on Funimation though but, can be found on Apple TV. This movie WAS canon. Now it isn't. The 3rd Super film has a bit of a retelling of the events from this movie that changes a lot of what happens. Bardock is still Goku's dad, just how things play out are a great deal different. This film was based on an idea Toriyama had about Goku's dad and the end of the Saiyans. He had come up with the concept way back when he was writing the Frieza saga but, never got to actually tell the story the way he envisioned it until the 3rd Super film.

And Yes, you must watch the filler I labeled. It is hilarious! (Not to mention the filler arc of 10 eps you missed before trunks showed up)

So while this was considered canon by fans for a long time it no longer is since more cent events have overwritten it. Still a great movie though.

2 DBZ content today yay. This special was great, first time seeing it actually. Coop to see the original origin of these events. Sadly this special is no longer canon. The History of Trunks is still canon tho. Can't wait to return to the series. You can still watch Movie 5 tho. I believe someone in one of the old videos said that you could watch up to that movie. Either way glad to watch the series along with you

Oh boy. The Bardock Special. While alot of the stuff in this film is no longer Canon, the Ending of the Film still holds weight.
