As far as I know, there really wasn't any hate for the light novels, at least not any more than any other series would have. I don't even know how much hate it gets in Japan, if at all. SAO did win light novel of the decade over in Japan. SAO seems to be doing perfectly fine over there. It's mainly in the west that, mainly due to anime youtubers, SAO has gotten a bad reputation. Anyway, about these episodes, I still prefer the light novel version of this story, but this didn't do too bad of a job. The LN gave more info about the other characters to flesh them out better.
