As for this villain - I think there's more to say about him (which is rarely done, for obvious reasons), even by the anime alone, but obviously even more through the novels. For example, we see 2 sides of him even IRL - there's a Sugou that Asuna's parents knew - son of her father's friend, always polite, smiling, cleanly looking, smart (yes, he is in charge of research team even in official way, and he is referring to Kayaba as a rival in this episode for example). And then we see the mask is dropped whenever "important" people aren't in sight. Mask that he evidently wore for years, which brings the question of why that is. Is it him being always crazy, or was it the external pressure first, and the madness as result of corruption by power he gained. Even what he did to Asuna here, is evidently not out of nowhere – he compares it to how NPCs would react, which would be his first victims. In SAO, only an Admin would have a power to do anything of a sort to an NPC (or a player), they are protected just as players from SA. He also so much strives for total control, while IRL has to hide his true self, which brings the question whether he had to compensate for something he experienced throughout his life. The arrogance to compensate for lack of true confidence in himself, to compensate for inability to rival someone like Kayaba… And idea of corruption by power that is present in SAO on top of it. I think there’s more, and none of it is directly explained, but evidences are out there, which is why I don’t agree with him being evil «just because», not entirely. (He's still a terrible inexcusable person for what he did, obviously :D)

One thing I wanted to say for many episodes - I think it's not really fair to say that it's a *fandom* that says all these terrible things about SAO. Yes, you most likely could find fans that would agree with some of them. But fandom overall - is not who would call Asuna a damsel. Even Asuna's dub VA doesn't agree with this. To say these things it's a hater's mindset, not the fandom.
