The audiobooks for volumes 5 and 6 are out already. You can go straight into those after finishing this one. This is where we get the info dumping era of Reki's writing. I personally don't mind it, but I definitely know people that do. Volume 5 has like 20 pages of info dumping, although that's nothing compared to, depending on how you want to see it, almost 40+ pages of info dumping done in volume 10 (Which he did apologize for in that volume's afterward. I do hope you get to read those afterwards whenever you can). Thankfully Reki doesn't really go that far with the info dumping anymore. (From what I've seen anyway) Anyway, as for Leafa's portrayal differences, I definitely think that the anime makes her seem more two dimensional compared to the novel. The fact that they added a whole lot of fan service really didn't make it any better (Especially because people keep blaming Reki for it). The way characters are portrayed in general is relatively weaker in the anime. I'm really looking forward to seeing what you think of the Alicization light novels cause those are the ones that really pushed me to disliking the anime adaptation. Everything up to Mother's Rosario is tolerable (With Mother's Rosario being the most well adapted part of the anime), but Alicization just goes and butchers things left and right. I really hope you do check out The Isolator, the third work from Reki. That one is also based off a web novel he wrote but it's a more recent one compared to SAO. While SAO was written in 2001, The Isolator was written in 2005. And in more recent news, Reki just recently announced he's working on a brand new series titled "Demon Crest". From the little information we've had, it looks like it might be pretty interesting. The novel releases on November in Japan.
