Heh, props for thinking back to Frieza saying he wouldn't fight with his hands. If there's one thing I've always disliked about latter days Dragonball, it's how little it thinks of common people. I know the old Men In Black addage: "A person is smart; PEOPLE are dumb, panicky, dangerous animals and you know it." But DBZ just takes it to an absurd degree in order to maintain the group's unsung-hero shtick going. I've heard of "the madness of crowds," but there's a limit, and Z passes go and collects two-hundred-dollars. The average earthling is a credulous buffoon that will believe any half-assed explanation some authority figure presents them with like some kind of psychological defense mechanism to preserve the neat, tidy, whitebread little reality they've constructed for themselves and not have to deal with the reality of it at all. Dragonball says the public neither deserve nor can handle the harsh truth, and ultimately makes them pawns to be used or manipulated. It kinda sucks, because the heroes are fighting to protect Earth, and yet earthlings give us so little to revere to show they're WORTH saving at all. That's not to say they're bad people —though the one-shot rando's who tend to get invented as the series progresses are rarely sterling examples of humanity— but it's really hard to respect any faction that shows itself to be so blind, ignorant and foolish. I'll never understand why Z does so little to extol the virtues of humanity. By the end of Z you'll understand the full weight of what I'm saying, but what you've seen already is more than justification enough for saying it.
