Heh. So Tat's favorite background pony, the "mint one," is Lyra Heartstrings. Funny thing about the background ponies, they're basically just "the extras" to fill crowd shots. They didn't have official names or backstories, or even consistent voices. You'll find they shift every time you hear them, because it's usually one of the lead voices putting on a random voice. But the Brony fandom made it their business not only to name but forge backstories for these characters, and it was so all-encompassing that eventually Hasbro just rolled with it. Why fight good marketing you didn't need to pay for? There's even one pony that everyone just agreed to being another incarnation of Doctor Who, in another Universe. You've seen them already, actually. Let's see... Ah, the Cutie Mark episode! It's actually NEVER stated in the show just how old any character is, but Apple Bloom and her peers are definitely elementary school age. "Cute-ceañera" is just a play on words. Basically, it's never confirmed either way if ponies age like real life horses, or like humans. If it wasn't already obvious, Cutie Marks are absolutely a metaphor for puberty, and the various changes that signify physical maturity. Like growing your first whisker, or... well, use your imagination. And in that regard, it's excellent as a narrative device, especially given that prior generations of MLP, to my knowledge, never tried to acknowledge or explain them. I think Gen3 came up with the name, but that honestly shocks me, because MLP was rather trash tier by then, before Lauren Faust got her shot to make it something with dignity and effort. I won't spoil it, but one of the Crusaders is actually a sister to one of the leads... and the other just vibes well with another. Another fun fact, we see all three Crusaders together in a shot when Nightmare Moon first appears, despite them not knowing each other until this episode. This episode also shows the limitations of the "Dear Princess Celestia" bookend of every episode in Season 1, in that because Twilight writes to Celestia even about morals she didn't learn firsthand... she has to get shoved into every episode even when she doesn't really belong. They'll rectify this next season, but pay attention to just what lengths they go to drag Twilight into any episode. It's actually pretty funny when you know...

Greetings ladies. Something interesting you mentioned earlier was about people creating their own OCs. And yes, we all did make our own at some point (mine was my Facebook profile for a while). Something else you might be interested in as is that the Brony community also gave unofficial names to the background ponies as well, many of the names being made official by the creators. However there is one pony you’ll be meeting very soon. You may or may not have recognised a silver, blonde maned pony in a few shots with a bubble cutie mark. Well, in the first episode of the show she was shown in the background with cross eyes due to an animation error. Well, it didn’t take long for the internet to embrace the little pony. All at once, she became an internet sensation and lots of fanart. The Brony christened her with the name Derpy Hooves, the first background character with an unofficial fan name. Now of course, the creators had to take notice of this. In her next few appearances, Derpy’s eyes were normal. However in an upcoming episode (not telling which) she appears again with her cross eyes. This means there is a possibility that while the show was still airing its first season, the creators decided to make something that was just a background pony error into an official character appearance of said character for the rest of the series. And I know you’ve still got a way to go, but in season 2 Derpy becomes an Easter egg. She will pop up in random moments in the background of episodes. Anyway, that’s enough for now. Don’t worry, I won’t spoil when or where you’ll see her. Just remember her name is Derpy Hooves, and she is freakin’ adorable.
