真紅的女兒，望結的同父異母的妹妹

螢從小就因為有個非常優秀的姊姊，總覺得自己樣樣不如，內心不免產生自卑感。儘管如此，她和姊姊之間的感情仍然很好，兩人感情緊密，經常互相依靠、打打鬧鬧。

她的課業成績可以說是慘不忍睹，幾乎跟不上進度；雖然運動能力還不錯，但體力方面卻很差。打網球時常常才打到一半就氣喘吁吁，撐不下去。然而實際上，她是因為天生力氣過人，每次發球都全力以赴，威力驚人，幾乎沒有人能接下她的球。也正因為太過用力，導致她在短時間內耗盡體力。

另一方面，轉學生蓮華驚訝地發現自己的讀心能力竟然對螢完全無效，這讓她感到十分疑惑。事實上，這是因為螢從母親真紅那裡遺傳了體內殘留的AI基因。這種源自高科技的特殊構造，使得她們母女對直接型的超能力產生天然抗性，像讀心術這類能力根本無法對她們產生作用。

而蓮華同是同父異母中最小的妹妹，生活在充滿猜忌與敵意的兄弟姊妹之中。為了避免被排擠、陷害，她不得不時刻運用讀心能力來防範來自家人的迫害。

在這樣的環境下，除了自己的親生母親外，她從未真正信任過任何人。

直到她遇見螢──那個讀心能力完全無效，卻天真坦率、從不虛偽的女孩。

蓮華對螢一開始充滿疑問，但很快便察覺，這個女孩的心與臉上所表現出的情緒是一致的。沒有算計，也沒有防備。正因為無法窺探，反而讓蓮華第一次感受到「不需要讀心」的輕鬆。

在螢身邊，她不用隨時提防，甚至可以安心地笑出來──那是她從未有過的經驗。

Kawano Hotaru

She is the daughter of Sinku and the half-sister of Miyu, sharing the same father.

Since childhood, Hotaru has always felt overshadowed by her exceptionally talented older sister, which led to a sense of inferiority. Despite this, the two sisters share a strong bond—they often rely on each other and playfully bicker back and forth.

Her academic performance is abysmal; she can barely keep up. Although she has decent athletic ability, her stamina is notably poor. When playing tennis, she often ends up gasping for breath halfway through the match and can’t go on. In truth, however, it’s because she possesses extraordinary strength by nature. Every time she serves, she goes all out, producing terrifying power that few can return. Because she exerts herself so much, she quickly burns through her stamina.

On the other hand, the transfer student Renka is shocked to discover that her mind-reading ability has no effect on Hotaru at all. This puzzled her deeply. The real reason lies in the AI gene that Hotaru inherited from her mother, Sinku. This gene, a remnant of advanced technology, grants both mother and daughter a natural resistance to direct psychic abilities—such as telepathy, which simply doesn’t work on them.

Renka herself is the youngest of the half-siblings from the same father, living in a family filled with suspicion and hostility. To avoid being ostracized or framed, she has always relied on her mind-reading ability to protect herself from her siblings’ schemes.

In such an environment, aside from her birth mother, she has never truly trusted anyone.

Until she met Hotaru—a girl whose mind couldn’t be read, yet who was innocent, honest, and never two-faced.

At first, Renka was suspicious of Hotaru, but soon she realized that Hotaru’s expressions matched her emotions exactly. No manipulation, no hidden intentions. Ironically, the inability to read her mind made Renka feel, for the first time, how freeing it was to not have to read someone’s thoughts.

With Hotaru, she didn’t need to be constantly on guard. She could smile without fear—for the first time in her life.

真紅の娘であり、望結とは父親を同じくする異母姉妹である。

幼少期より、優秀すぎる姉の存在により、自らを常に劣った存在だと感じていた蛍は、次第に劣等感を抱くようになった。それでも姉妹の絆は深く、互いに支え合い、時にはじゃれ合うほど親密な関係を築いていた。

学業は著しく振るわず、授業についていくのもやっとの状態。運動は得意なものの、持久力が乏しく、テニスの試合では途中で息が上がってしまうことが多い。しかし、彼女は生まれつき並外れた筋力を持っており、その強力なサーブは誰も受け止められないほど。常に全力で打つため、体力の消耗が激しいのである。

そんな蛍に対し、転校生の蓮華は自身の読心能力がまったく通じないことに困惑する。その理由は、蛍が母・真紅から受け継いだAI由来の遺伝子にあった。この高次な構造が、読心術のような直接的な超能力を無効化する耐性を生み出していた。

一方、蓮華は異母兄弟の中で最年少であり、猜疑心と敵意に満ちた家庭環境の中で、常に読心能力を駆使して生き抜いてきた。実母以外に信頼できる人間など、彼女の人生にはいなかった。

──蛍に出会うまでは。

読めない。けれども、嘘をつかず、飾らず、感情がそのまま表情に現れる蛍。

蓮華は初めこそ不審に思ったが、やがて気づいた。彼女の前では、警戒する必要がないのだと。読心など不要な、ただ素直に心を預けられる関係が、そこにあった。

そして蓮華は初めて、「誰かと一緒にいて、心から笑う」ことができたのだった。
